Cargo Ship Issued Mayday Call Before Hitting Maryland Bridge

- The 95,000-ton container ship reportedly lost power and propulsion before accidentally veering into a pillar, triggering the collapse of Maryland’s Francis Scott Keys bridge. Dramatic video of the disaster shows the ship losing power for 30 seconds as it drifts toward the bridge. When power is restored it was too late to prevent the disaster. Maryland Governor Wes Moore says a mayday call from the container ship just before the impact alerted cops to halt traffic heading across the doomed bridge.
Those poor construction workers; working, making a living, filling potholes on a bridge at 1:30am…and BAM. 😞
My heart goes out to all involved in this accident.
If they knew with enough time (probably a small amount, but enough) to stop traffic onto the bridge, then why were the construction workers still there?
@user-qv6wp9dx7b I'm pretty sure they meant they were able to stop people from driving onto the bridge quickly after it fell, preventing potentially dangerous circumstances on the remaining bridge
Edit: I was wrong, they did know ahead of time but just barely. There was a video that had the recording of the cops radios. They were in the process of trying to figure out how to get the crew off the bridge when it collapsed 💔
@@user-qv6wp9dx7bthe cops stopped traffic. They likely didn’t get onto the bridge themselves. It’s a very long bridge. They probably did not have comms with the construction crew.
Crazy thing is…just this past year 6 state highway workers were killed when a car went up and over the Jersey wall into a construction zone…including a father and son…10 miles away…now this…citizens should give a nod and peace sign to workers in fluorescent vests…
If this occurred during morning rush hour major death toll would be much higher

He needs to go buy a lottery ticket.

Looking at another article on the timeline, it looks like the first call was to the Coast Guard roughly a minute after crews determined they couldn't get the ship's powered restored. They hit the bridge roughly a minute later. The first signs of trouble wasn't even apparent until 4 minutes before the collision. Looks like they lost power at the worst timing possible.
I have a dumb, weirdly worded question- it’s like the barge was already on course with the current and their speed to hit the support piling before they lost power?
@@kellyramsey5486Could have been poor navigation.
Which is why it doesn't make any sense that police were able to stop traffic. I feel like they're just making that up to sound better. No way they had enough time after that mayday call.
@@erickingery4883 Shortly before 01:30 (05:30 GMT) a mayday was issued[24] notifying the Maryland Department of Transportation that they had lost control of the vessel and an allision (collision with a stationary object) with the bridge was possible, citing a loss of propulsion.[1] Further traffic was stopped from crossing the bridge.[5][25][26] The ship's lights were seen to go out and come on again some moments later and then go off again, and smoke was also seen coming from Dali's funnel.[10][27] The ship dropped its anchors as per emergency procedure.[28] At 01:28,[29] the ship struck a support column of the bridge, beneath its metal truss and at the south-west end of its largest span, at 8 knots (15 km/h).
Emergency teams began receiving 911 calls at 01:30.[3] The Baltimore Police Department was alerted to the collapse at 01:35. Large-scale rescue and recovery efforts were initiated.[30] The United States Coast Guard deployed boats and a helicopter as part of rescue efforts.
So i think someone blocked traffic off fairly quickly, but it may not have been the Baltimore Police Department 1st on the scene.
@@ethanweeter2732I believe they had a pilot during this so bad navigation seems unlikely.

Doesn't seem like a good design to make the entire bridge collapse if one pillar is hit.
My exact thought-damn bridge folded like an airplane food tray.
It was a continuous through truss bridge, the third longest such in the world. The entire thing is held up by pulling force between its parts, tension, like tug of war. When a massive part of it collapsed on impact it either pulled the rest down with it, or left it without a counter-force to promptly pull itself down the other way.
They cost an order of magnitude or two less because they're very material efficient, and can cover longer distances than an arch or beam bridge. It was built 50 years ago, I doubt we had the engineering experience or industry to build any other kind of bridge to such a size, and even if we did it would be ruinously expensive even today.
@@amorphousavocet1210 50 years is actually very impressive ngl.
I get your point, but if you look at it, it's only the middle of the bridge that collapsed, which is where it got hit by the ship. There can't be too many pillars there because otherwise, ships wouldn't be able to pass under it.
i was on that bridge roughly 20ish minutes before it collapsed. when i heard it crash behind us (yes, it was that loud) i practically jumped out of my seat.

I will add that the wind and weather play a part. I have had several times with full power loss on large vessels. It is scary. I have had this in the North Sea twice, off the US east coast twice, and once in a fjord. You have no control. I have been monitoring the weather in this area due to our current operations in the area and the wind has been 20-30 knots from the north, right on the ship's beam. This will accelerate the dilemma into a full-blown emergency with no time to get the generators fired up. Terrible timing and location. Sad for all involved.
Why cant you anchor the ship to stop it? Isnt the anchor manual and doesnt need electric power? Why doesnt the ship have emergency stop fins where you can manually crank them out with crew power to slow its movement in the current?? I dont understand how this issue hasnt been made safer
@@doughboygee6865it was deployed but and anchor is meant to anchor a ship hence the name, not to stop it a knots, it’s not an emergency brake

Still seems suspect, ship was aiming right for it. They say it takes a great distance to turn these ships, no evasive maneuver appears to be taken.
Is it common for these ships to suddenly lose power? Or is this a lack of oversight and safety like Boeing?

ON the ship issue, why is no one talking about Primary and Auxiliary Power? Yeah the lights flickered, doesn't mean you lose propulsion and rudder. When power fails, Auxiliary kicks in for the engine and rudder. You do not lose control of a vessel this size. WTF going on here.
So this is clearly going to be the reason for some new regulations…

Why weren’t there any Tugs or a pilot in attendance ?

There were two Baltimore harbor pilots onboard.
There were two tugboats, they disconnected once the ship entered the main channel (check out casual navigation's video from today)
I toured UMD today and I saw the wreckage on the way to College Park. Something hits different when you see it in person versus just watching the video.
I wonder if there is any audio recording of that collapse. That had to be horrific for those construction guys before beginning their fall.
Why the heck didn’t they evacuate the construction crew when they closed it to traffic?
The police had no means of communication with the road crew, and was too afraid to drive onto the bridge to warn them.
@@michaellee2910The construction workers were warned but they didn’t have enough time to leave. Around a minute passed after the mayday call before the ship hit the bridge, barely enough time to block off traffic, definitely not enough time to cross half the bridge, load everyone up, and evacuate.
