Since you asked for suggestions: Do it like restaurants do. Everything is 6” off the floor. Shelves are wire with ventilation. Shelves are a few inches away from walls. Storerooms are rotated properly and kept clean. Cardboard is usually removed upon delivery. Everything is kept in original, unopened containers and dated. When opened it is removed to a cooler, put in a closed container, and dated. They have a company (usually) check and spray monthly for critters. You can do this yourself, inside if you’re comfortable, outside definitely. I spray my pantry inside spring and fall. (Which reminds me it’s time) I also use an exterior crumble & spray around the perimeter of my house.
You need to check your preps regularly. Open those buckets every month and check for bugs. The sooner you find them, the less loss you will incur.

My house is only 10 years old. We built in the middle of the woods. With 6 cats never saw a turd, until--the floor joist started collapsing a (whole different story). Contractor tore out a 14×16 section of floor, but it took nearly a year before I found someone else to finish the job (We were not in good hands with my homeowners). Needless to say, the mice took over, destroying everything, including 2 years worth of preps. They ate Irish Spring bar soap, ate the labels off cans, candles, coffee, the sulfur tips off stick matches. I think they were having a smoke after making baby mice! It was hard enough rebuilding a new house, but battling the rodents was worse, yet, worse than that, being abandoned by the insurance company 😢

I have had this happen and would have been avoided if a handyman would have listened to me to plug a hole in the drywall in the garage. I remember at night (of course) they would be active and my kitties would stare/track their movements in the attic and the walls, not to mention I could hear them. I had a 2300 sq ft house and they had to set up camp right above my head. Every night when trying to go to sleep I could hear them having a party above my head. I think what initially attracted them to my house was a compost pile I had and I used to feed the birds with seeds. Those Items were gone in no time and sadly I had to call and exterminator. They did not use poison thankfully as it will go into the food chain and kill many other species.

This way of using the 5 gallon bucket filled with oats and water is the right way to exterminate rats. I say that because poison given to the rat now goes into the food chain of ALL the other critters that feed on the rats. Everybody dies..the rats, thier prey and the prey of the prey. Using poison is the easy and lazy way. It can devastate the whole eco-system in your area. Thank you for being a responsible and thoughtful exterminator and for protecting the other wildlife from unnecessary death.

I hired people to find out where they were coming in., they could not see anything that was an entry point. I researched and researched. Then i bought copper mesh and wedged it in all around the foundation at the sill plate. No more mice. i also put out a 50/50 mix of baking soda and cornbread with DE mixed in at various locations outside. Then the squirrels came, and they were getting in the loft crawl space. My friends husband sealed everything from the roof down. No more squirrels for 7 months now. Praying that i never see or hear another critter in my house. By July 2012, we were suffering from a horrendous drought. We had pack rats attacking our horses for the feed. I ended up resorting to pellet rat poison mixed with sweet horse feed, and throwing it under pallets holding our firewood. Within 3 days the problem was gone. • @kellyname5733
      @kellyname5733 Год назад +1

I can understand why you used the pellets but the down side of poison is that the rats/mice run because the poison is killing them and then the big birds eat the poisoned rat/mice. The bird then dies and so on it goes. It goes thru the food chain and they all die.

Great tips. Years ago when we first got into backyard chickens, we learned the importance of not leaving the feed in those hanging feeders inside the coop. I noticed it was being emptied quicker than normal in the past. Then we started seeing the droppings in the nesting boxes . Let me tell you I could not believe the size of these rats. They were the size of rabbits you commonly see in most yards. We quit leaving feed in the hanging feeders in the coop. We patched up the holes they chewed to enter . We set live traps but that only worked a couple times. We ended up resorting to a poison called Blue Death that we put on the outside of the coop and run area inside of a dog crate to prevent other wildlife from getting into. They squeezed through the 2 by 2 inch squares of the crate ate the poison, and after about a month, no more rats. Lesson learned. I also learned that rats that size are not just in big cities, they are in rural areas also.

We just went through a mouse issue last December. It stemmed from a new heat pump (what they use for heat here in Maryland) installation we had last summer. The company doing the work never sealed the space between the new piping they put in, and our foundation wall they put it through. We live rural so the field mice had no problem finding those entrances and making their way through the house. They actually went up two stories to our attic too. That's were we first discovered them in December. They had peed and pooped in the insulation so badly that we had to have all of it replaced in the attic and crawlspace. Moral of the story, check around your foundation (and anything that goes through it) for gaps. These gaps were literally only big enough to get a pinky finger through. Seal up ANY space regardless of the size. ~ Stephanie

Shame they didn't eat the rice... it absorbs fluids from their digestive system, quickly swells in size, and makes them explode. Guessing yours have seen that happen to some of their relatives and learned that mistake already. Try this: fill a bucket half full, prop a board on the rim for them to use like a ramp, then cover the surface of the water with sunflower seeds. The seeds will float and look like a solid surface to them. Rodents tend to follow along walls, so set it up in a corner or along a wall you think they travel. Check daily to see how many drowned thinking they found an open bucket full of seeds. Another comment said oats would work but I worry they would soak up the water and sink. Dump and reset as needed. Good luck! Mice are fairly stupid and tend to fall for most traps if you leave the traps untouched for 3 or 4 days to give them time to work up the courage to investigate. Rats are smart little b*$tards and when they got into our quail shed they decimated everything... wiring, plumbing, walls, roof, heavy plastic feed containers, bags of pine shavings (it was EVERYWHERE), spare EMPTY heavy duty chicken feeders and waterers, and sadly our entire flock of 21 quail. Oh, and countless eggs. No, why they ate rope lighting around the ceiling, and pvc pipes that weren't in the way of gaining access, I have no idea. Rats are just A-holes. If I were the chick in the story, I think I would have seriously abandoned the property. We didn't even have them in double digits... I can't conceive of THOUSANDS! *shudder* Good luck with your situation. There is a vid on YT by Barrier Pest Control showing how mice can fit through dime sized holes with ease, so when looking for points of entry, consider no hole "too small". That video convinced hubby to seal up holes he thought "couldn't possibly be an issue".

Now we had one rat several years ago that must have been someone's pet because it wandered around our house with no fear. He only ever ate the fish food. We called him Ben. I caught him in a butterfly net and shoved him out the back door. Never saw him again. But last year, Ratty moved in. Ratty knew what she was about. Her attempts to chew a hole in my cabinets were thwarted by globs of peppermint toothpaste, painted everywhere she could reach. Super chic. But her downfall came at the hands of a Tide Pod, left on the counter by accident. In the morning there was no pod, a floral smell and little rat footprints in purple all over the counter. RIP Ratty. Thank you so much for making this video. I saw the post in the group & my skin is STILL crawling! We prepare for the one-off rodent, but to deal with something of this magnitude is unfathomable! rodents are SOOOO destructive & something to consider, if we ARE ever presented with a true SHTF situation, they will be a far bigger issue than I think most of us have considered due to a breakdown in sanitation services. If people are no longer able or willing to deal with their garbage, rodents will thrive & they reproduce sooooo prolifically, that we will likely be dealing with similar situations on a widespread scale. So absolutely something to be prepared for. Something to be mindful of is that wires in wiring harnesses in vehicles, RVs, etc....in recent years, the insulation coating on wires is being made with soy components which is what attracts rodents to vehicle wiring etc. especially in newer vehicles or if you've had recent wiring repairs on an older vehicle.

I am usually all about organic methods, but poison is also dangerous to your other animals, so I am sure she was in a no win situation. Bless her heart. And don’t forget that where there are mice and rats in that kind of number there will also be snakes ! I loved all your ideas!

For perspective: Rats climb, swim, jump and have opposable digits. They are too smart for snap traps. If a pet rat gets loose they go wild in less than 2 weeks. They don't need us. Their eliminatory tract is short, so they excrete AS they eat. They carry multiple zoonotic diseases that can be fatal.

We lived in a RV while our home was built. Mice came. We adopted 2 shelter kitties, but when mice get in the walls kitties can't catch them. One day we played Whack a Mole/Mouse. Mice had gotten in my little stove top and would pop up their heads. It was insane. We don't have mice in our new home, but I've prepped plenty of sticky traps for an invasion. Good advice Leisa. I have the totes you showed in the basement, and only put canned goods in there. Anything in vac bags or mylar, goes into those popcorn tins or the small metal trash cans. Rats can't go through 1/2 inch hardware cloth. As long as it is heavy enough so they cannot chew through it. They can go through a hole the size of a quarter. Or a 1/2 " crack under a door. Mice can try, but usually get their heads stuck in 1/2" hardware cloth. They can get through the tiniest crack under a door tho, because they can squish their bodies down. But not 1/2" hardware cloth. How do I know all this, because I have had pigeons for 15 years and it is my job to keep them safe. If that person that had them chew through water bottles, then it was probably rats, because they need water to survive. Very important for them. Mice can usually get enough water from food they eat. Rats will try lots harder to get to water. Very good video to bring this to peoples attention. Many think their stuff is safe when it really isn't. They have just been lucky. Mice and rats are nearly everywhere. The only place I know of that doesn't have rats is Alberta Canada. You can look that up. We had to learn this stuff because in this area, we have been invaded with both. Hard to keep outside also, because we have a very old house with a stone basement. They can find ways in through that.

I think using Irish Spring is for deer in your garden, I haven't heard of using it for rodents. I use a mixture of 1/2 powdered sugar and 1/2 baking soda for several pest including mice and this has worked for me. I have pets and don't want to use toxic substances. However the down side is unlike some rodent killers they smell after they die, but are not toxic. So hopefully you can find them, if in your home, and dispose quickly. If outside insects should take care of because they are not toxic. I hope this is helpful.
Maybe turn your steel trash can lid upside down before stacking.

We were going to visit our daughter and her family for a week and since we live rurally with trees surrounding the back yard, we have been battling mice all winter and we're worried about what we find when we came home. I had just canned oranges and had 2 gallon bags of orange peels. We set out traps everywhere we thought they might travel and placed orange peels heavily along the door sweeps to the backyard and our garage. When we came home not one mouse in any trap! That was late January and we still keep orange peels along the door sweeps and still are not seeing mice! Crazy but true! I have heard that mice will also chew off canned goods labels!

We had no idea, no sign of them otherwise in the kitchen. We have two cats and they hadn't noticed. We moved out all the furniture and found the hole. We had to reinforce all of our skirting and thankfully that worked. They got in my old pantry and thankfully only got cat food, they hadn't noticed my peeps with such a ready supply of dried biscuits. You have to reinforce the base of the floor, basically any edge they can chew away at. Heavy duty mesh wire stopped them completely. We basically ran it around the circumference of the wall where it meets the floor, bent over so L shape, down the wall, along the floor. Any hole or gap, we filled with wire wool. Next we tackled outside making sure they couldn't get under. Those large blue UN style barrels are great, they can't get through those. It was rats in the pantry. We live in a very rural location near to water so they're are out there, even if not seen.

I would recommend contacting your local extention office or a reputable pest management company for recommendations of deterrants. A couple of problem areas we experienced were due to simply dry dog food and bird seed. Mice and others absolutely love that stuff. We bought those handy dandy auto feeders for our dogs kibble because we were working long hours and wanted them to have access to fresh food and water. It was a huge welcome mat for the rodents. At my work, we had a similar experience to the story Leisa shared, only with ground hogs. So many ground hogs. They chewed right through the siding of the garage on our building, and made themselves at home in our facility. They climbed up inside vehicles in our parking lot and chewed through wires, hoses, etc. Not one person's auto insurance covered those damages, sometimes in the thousands of dollars. It turns out they were attracted to the road salt that was used during winter for icy roads. It essentially sprayed the undercarraige of the vehicles turning them into homing devices for the ground hogs. We contacted DNR and they brought trucks of traps and relocated all of them. It took weeks to trap them all.

We don't have canned beans and veggies here, they come in boxes. The milk and cream are also in boxes. My little "friends" had a feast on that! Very quickly I started putting everything in jars or plastic totes.
3 years later I still have rodent problems. I've tried flour and baking soda. Either I had more "friends" than I thought, or it didn't work. I've done homemade traps and store bought traps. No luck. I've used peppermint oil and fresh peppermint. They seemed to enjoy the minty freshness. The little darlings eat the soap in the shower! Poison is the only thing I've found to reduce the population to a tolerable level.

Apparently if you can block the natural entry point with something they can't chew through they don't go around it, instead they go check out another natural place. We put metal strips on the bottom of any external wooden doors. Gnawing edges are the corners created where wall meets floor. From the rats perspective it's a perfect shape to chew on. Good luck!

Even though that's far from the truth. We had a problem for awhile with mice leaving turds all over the stovetop. I tried peppermint on cotton balls and bay leaves scattered on the counters. Didn't work for us. What did work was putting baking soda and instant potatoes on a plastic lid on the counter. Although it killed the mice, we did have the experience of the awful smell for about a month. We assume they died in a wall of our home. I just seen another one a couple nights ago run across the dining room floor. Ugh, I've set out more baking soda and instant potatoes in hopes that works again.

My property backs up to a ranch so I have more friends visiting than the average home and I have "friends" in my wood pile. For anyone that would say "you got to get rid of those rate in the wood pile", I would remind them that I live on a ranch. That is not possible. It is open land. Thank you for talking about this disgusting and embarrassing problem! Sadly the old snap traps with peanut butter work best... We were standing in the kitchen one day and a rat went walking across the top of the stove..... We have had things die and the stink is unbearable. We have fought this problem for years and we are fighting again with critters in the attic. There are many videos on YT about how to use Jiffy Cornbread mix and baking soda to make food that kills them. You just don't want them dying someplace in the house.... As for those totes--they are awesome and Costco put them on sale about once every month last summer. Hope they do the same this year. They were about $9 each.

How hard would it have been for the building company to get pest control to spray the field before breaking ground on the school? Might be worth mentioning to the county. And document the damage!
