I'm surprised you never mentioned Grandia. You also forgot to mention Super Mario RPG as the first Mario RPG before Paper Mario. There's also Lunar, and Lufia I can think of that could be added to this list.
I am entertained that the Drakengard series is starting to be seen as the offshoot of NieR instead of the other way around. My other fun fact about that series is that Yoko Taro claims everything he's written for it is cannon. Which includes Tokyo Musical Theatre, and that time 2B and 9S teamed up with Final Fantasy's Warrior of Light and some random dwarves to save another world through a showdown against the Watchers in a digital recreation of Tokyo.
And one could argue that the Final Fantasy XIV x YoRHa crossover directly leads into Drakengard 3, as the teleportation of Norvrandt's digital recration of Tokyo might actually become the Cathedral City in Drakengard. As we saw in NieR Re[in]carnation, the Moon Server has some data from Final Fantasy XIV's world, which could only come from the City that was sent from FFXIV's world to another one at the end of the crossover.
@@dimas-dvdru Lelouch from Code Geass, Subaru from Re:Zero, Rika from Higurashi too are canon to the NieR Universe thanks to SINoALICE (canon to NieR thanks to Re[in]carnation)
Don't forget Mega Man Battle Network/Starforce, Super Mario RPG, Crystar, Cristales, Rouge Galaxy, Dark Cloud, Black Rose Valkyrie, The World Ends With You, and Eternal Sonata. That and a flash/steam game known as Crystal Story.
I always miss Inazuma Eleven on lists like these. It's a very different JRPG centering about soccer but that makes it so great. Not all games are amazing but the sheer amount of characters in each game is just enough to spent hours on hours in this game
You are going to keep getting more recommendations for additional JRPGs to cover, so of course I'm going to contribute a few as well! Ar Tonelico (and Ar No surge) - The three games of Ar Tonelico all are part of a connected storyline, focusing on a different miles-tall tower after a world destroying calamity. There is a heavy visual novel style focus on the inner emotional struggles of the magic wielding heroines, called Reyvateil. Ar Nosurge is more of a spiritual sequel with an unconnected storyline, but may be a prequel to the original trilogy. Neptunia (five mainline games, over a dozen spinoffs) - A fictionalized telling of the Console Wars era of real world gaming, featuring a protagonist based on a never-completed Sega console called the Neptune. The franchise as a whole focuses more on metatextual jokes about video games and RPGs than on any deep narrative through line.
great vid good pacing, you hit the outline w o lingering too long, no filler or nonsense, all useful info, got what i expected - a brief story synopsis and gameplay overview thanks
such a good list! would love to see an equivalent for more obscure franchises at some point (like dept. heaven, utawarerumono, summon night, sakura wars, growlanser)
Disappointed that SaGa is not included because that franchise deserves its flowers for being one of the earliest JRPGs to have a non linear gameplay structure. SaGa was THE original JRPG with multiple protags with Romancing Saga long before Octopath was a thing. It is still doing well since Romancing SaGa 2 is getting a 3D remake soon and SaGa Emerald Beyond just came out too.
Don’t forget the “Mario+Rabbids” series, a genuinely great tactical game for stretching the old brain muscle! Also, the second game actually managed to make Rabbids not annoying! I’m so glad it found its audience after its uncertain release! ☺️
I will always recommend the shadow hearts series, especially the second game. Such memorable JRPGs. The settings and music are both gorgeous and haunting.
Chrono Trigger will probably always be my favorite game of all time, no other game gave me the same enjoyment and feels like it did, like when we first get to Zeal, a whole group of floating continents from 12,000 B.C, and then hearing corridors of time, that moment is still stuck in my head, or when we first get to the overworld of 600 ad and hear wind scene, or when Frog (my favorite character in the game) split a mountain in half. Honestly I just love this game, from the idea of time travel and how well they utilized it, to the amazing soundtracks, to the characters, just everything about it honestly
Breath of Fire I, Ii and III are direct sequels. 4 is to believed a prequel while 5 is also somehow connected. So yeah, they are connected (specially I and II and the Nina in two meets her grandmother who is the Nina from I)
If you do a next part I'd suggest adding God Eater. Similar to monster hunter although smaller in scale but it serves as an option with a legitimate series tag with 3 games all relatively solid
Phantasy Star has a feeling I miss. It is false science fiction like star wars and they managed to balance it pretty well back in the day. I am not a fan of hard core science fiction and the type of threats it brings. It is science fantasy and you get to travel in space and go in villages that aren't filled with futuristic stuff that can have problems with the dark magician that obeys a new dark religion. That is very unique and every people who experience PSIV fall in love with the game
Here’s a list of my favorite JRPGs 1. Legend of Dragoon 2. Tales of Berseria 3. Tales of Arise 4. Final Fantasy X 5. Final Fantasy 15 6. Final Fantasy 16 7. Dragon’s Dogma 1 8. Dragon’s Dogma 2 9. White Knight Chronicles 1 10. White Knight Chronicles 2
I disagree about Breath of Fire. BoF3 is not unanimously consedered the best. The community is split between 3 and 4 as the best game. Here a few ideas for part 3: Grandia, Earthbound/Mother, Bravely Default,
Wow, thanks for the reminder! I haven't thought about the Grandia series in over a decade! Now I'm curious if I have any of those games in my old collection anymore.
if your going to make a next one think about adding the metal max and front mission saga this 2 needs more recognition especially metal max that the main series had never leave japon but can be play thanks to fan translations.
Just a slight correction with Phantasy star, the last subseries is actually PSO2, nova is a spinoff game set in the PSO2 universe, same as idola phantasy star saga and NGS.
I guess others will give recommendations for the 'normal' JRPGs. So I will give the 18+ JRPGs version then. Battle Goddess series from Eushully and the many spin offs from that title. Well, basically all games from Eushully are in the 18+ RPG genre. Rance series from Alicesoft with the most known title of the series: sengoku rance. And then lastly, There's Muv Luv series which I also only heard of existence but never play. I guess that's all lmao
I really like the concept of suikoden but I really wish it had an actual gameplay. I tried many times to get into it because it used to be my ex gf's favorite series but the gameplay always makes me feel like i don't know why im playing a game that plays itself.
Get your facts straight, Monster Hunter isn't an RPG bro. And maybe think of calling your video something different because you didn't explain every RPG franchise in 15 minutes or 18 minutes, maybe you might attempt to explain every RPG franchise, but I'm certain you won't. You going to explain about Far East of Eden or many other franchises that have never made their way west at all?
Pokemon was in the first video, and as noted in that one, there really isn't much to say about it in this format. Basically everyone who has had spent more than a couple days on the internet and/or had some part of their childhood land somewhere in the past 25+ years probably has a passable enough understanding of Pokemon to make talking about in this minute or less quick overview style completely moot. I would *love* to see a dedicated video on the games/franchise at-large from someone who loves JRPGs but isn't fully inside the Pokemon content creator bubble though, since nearly everything Pokemon-related on here seems to come from channels almost solely dedicated to the series.
