  • There's a lot of mystery surrounding traditional Chinese martial arts. Is kungfu really as powerful as karate, muay thai or jiu jitsu? Or is there something more to this ancient art than just fighting? Bruce Lee introduced the West to KungFu. Now China Uncensored will introduce you to the history and traditions of Chinese Martial Arts with the help of Master of 7 Star Praying Mantis, Longfei Yang.

      +China Uncensored I've spent some time learning a mixed shaolin style
      kung fu and I'm not sure how well an online school would work for most
      people. When I was training I found I learned the most from the teacher
      or more experienced students criticizing and showing me how to the
      techniques were supposed to be, for example if my posture or an angle
      was slightly off (even though I thought I had it right). I'm not sure
      how a person would get the same experience online. Not saying I wouldnt
      be interested in learning what I could from Master Longfei's online
      school, I just think technique would be hard to master that way.

    It's not true that Tai Chi originated as a form of cultivation and only later was applied to martial arts. It was originally for combat, specifically to defend Chen village against bandits. It incorporates qigong movements which are much longer, and were for cultivation, but the forms and practices taught as Tai Chi today have always been martial (until the 20th century, when the Nationalists advocated them as a health practice)

      ?

    • @diphyllum8180
      @diphyllum8180 8 лет назад +6

      chu ren It's not "only a branch" of Taichi. It's by far the oldest "branch," and the original "branch," the one from which all the other styles branched off. You could even say it's the trunk, and the other styles are the branches.

    • @Kiwanja
      @Kiwanja 8 лет назад +4

      +Michael Vipperman Not only that, Chen Taijiquan was developed by following the principles of Qigong and the yin and yang, creating the circular movements and the "be weak against strength", "be strong against weakness" philosophy.
      This is also the reason it is named 'TAIJI'quan. The word taiji refers to the yin & yang, literally makin Taijiquan mean 'Yin & Yang Style'.

    • @diphyllum8180
      @diphyllum8180 8 лет назад +6

      Kiwanja My preferred translation is "the fist of great extremes." Yin (falling, compressing) and yang (rising, expanding) are the extremes but a lot of people aren't familiar enough with Taoism to understand that, and they mistakenly think Taijiquan is all about receiving or is only soft (that is, they misunderstand the meaning of "yin" and ignore the yang). Interestingly there's also a Northern Indian martial art associated with worship of Siva which employs the same principles, combining the rising force of pushing off the ground and the falling force of falling towards the ground in martial applications which are often very similar to Tai Chi applications. It requires a subtle understanding of energy, which is at the core of both Taoist and Saivite philosophy (only the Saivites personalise it as Siva, whereas the Taoists keep it abstract as "Taiji")

      Well obviousely people still can't differenciate between modern wushu and traditional chinese kung fu styles like Hung Gar and even the exact same mantis style shown in the video. It depends on what's someones intention of learning these.
      In the main Hung Gar line after Grandmasters Wong Fei Hung, Lam Sai Wing and Chiu Kau, which is currently lead by Chiu Chi Ling and will be lead by Martin Sewer afterwards, you learn to fight pretty much immediately, strengthen your body and after that is done you start combining external with internal training. In the end you have to be able to fight and later better control your body and mind while fighting and training new techniques.
      Thing is that even Hung Gar wasn't ever meant to be used as a sport, but as a means to defend ones life back when it was mandatory to survive after the takeover of the manchus.

Many Chinese now a days practice modern Martial Arts versus their traditional stuff.

    I was lucky enough to learn a lot of these principles back in 1980 from an Aikido teacher. The breathing, balance internal focus etc. It really takes years before you begin to really understand it, and I am still gaining more understanding. No matter which path you take, some good habits for life are, horse stance training, Breathing exercise, meditation, balance training, juggling, dancing, and arm movement exercises, not weights, movement. Some things take years to really pay off, when I was young, that was hard to grasp. 10 years sounded long, 20 ridiculous, and now after 40, they were short. The benefit of training is feeling good all the time, sore maybe, but good.

      They have an entirely different reason for getting into martial arts than yours.
      I wouldn't say either is more legitimate--martial arts were created to fight, and some branches have evolved into a kind of moving meditation/personal growth. Great, and I respect people who do that for those reasons; personal growth is very important and we all deserve the chance to seek peace.
      Other branches want to stay true to the roots and just learn to fight. I respect that, too, as long as they apply their skill appropriately (self defense or tournaments.)
      People you're describing are mixing the categories, and not getting the point.

    Chinese martial arts, often labeled under the umbrella terms kung fu (Chinese: 功夫; pinyin: gōng fu) and wushu (武术; wǔshù), are the several hundreds of fighting styles that have developed over the centuries in China.
    These fighting styles are often classified according to common traits, identified as "families" (家; jiā), "sects" (派; pài) or "schools" (門; mén) of martial arts.
    Examples of such traits include Shaolinquan (少林拳) physical exercises involving Five Animals (五形) mimicry, or training methods inspired by Chinese philosophies, religions and legends.
    Styles that focus on qi manipulation are called internal (内家拳; nèijiāquán), while others that concentrate on improving muscle and cardiovascular fitness are called "external" (外家拳; wàijiāquán).
    Geographical association, as in northern (北拳; běiquán) and "southern" (南拳; nánquán), is another popular classification method.

    Most forms of traditional martial arts require years of dedicated full-time training, especially during the youth, like training as a professional athlete - which makes it almost impossible to master in the modern world when school/work takes up most of the time.
    Without enough time for basic training to 'master both the body and spirit', you end up with either training emphasized on the physical portion (without the inner/discipline to support it), or emphasized on the inner portion (without the training for it to work in an actual fight)

    The teacher had originally asked why we were there. I told her that I needed better health, and that I didn't want to get beat up by bullies.
    So, she taught the movement, but every now and then, she would come over to me.
    "Look how you are standing." Then she would push me and I would lose my balance.
    "Try this." "Center this."
    Then she would push me. I did not lose my balance.
    Then she would go back to the movement.
    I forgot how it made me feel.

      If you want to better your self as a person from the perspective of martial arts then you need to balance the physical with the internal (psychological).
      In the modern age people should be thinking about spreading them self as much as possible. Doing traditional martial arts with the likes of meditation but also including modern fighting styles like boxing and wrestling.
      Ancient Chinese wrestling at one point would have been part of various "kung fu" styles.
      We live in a modern world and we cannot expect to train like a 12 centrury warrior so we must use what is available to today.
      Even areas like mathematics that try to peer down into the deepest regions of human logic can be a part of this approach.

    • @Sub-Zero450
      @Sub-Zero450 9 лет назад

      I get that, but mostly you have to focus on your internal strength first more than your external. A lot of people have been practicing external martial arts and have been ignoring the internal martial arts, they haven't learned to relax, now with people who are learning martial arts only use it for UFC and MMA and I don't like that. Sure martial arts is a sport, but there's also another meaning of martial arts, which was explained in this video. I train internal first and then external so that way I can balance both my physical body and internal energy and will breathe more, unlike UFC and MMA, they get tired quickly and their dodging/blocking skills just lack. For how long do you train in martial arts and how you're experienced and how you can execute without pressure is how you're good at at by yourself, with friends, with masters/teachers, and how you do it. How UFC and MMA trains is just only external, only attacking, they disregard relaxation in their training. Traditional martial arts focuses on meditation, relaxing, and focusing your internal energy. I'm training 18 martial arts styles and Boxing is one of them, but I don't train Boxing as much as I train Traditional Chinese Martial Arts

      ***** that only applies to rookie or wannabe MMA. Real MMA fighters can fight for hours. My friend Jack Ho is an professionl amateur MMA fighter. I seen the guy train and spar for 6 hour straight almost non stop. In reality it's actually the other way around real MMA fighter have more stamina than traditional martial artist. Biggest reason is that it puts food on their table it's their livelihood. Unlike traditionalist who do it for a hobby and have a side job or make money by teaching their art.
      Traditionalist martial artist need to understand that MMA are doing the exact same thing that they're doing. The only difference is that they focus more on application than form.

    • @Sub-Zero450

      Using martial arts to beat up people is just down right wrong for me. I know most MMA and UFC fans won't agree, but they do this for entertainment, fun, and for money. Traditional martial artists do not beat up people because they have martial arts, no. Unlike MMA and UFC, traditional martial arts have higher standards than UFC and MMA, not because of beating the shit out of people. Stamina wise - UFC and MMA fighters get tired easily and get knocked out fast while traditional martial artists can stay longer because with mind, body, breathing, and spiritual training they can withhold a huge punch to the face, unlike most fights in UFC and MMA, 2-3 hard punches in the face can get them knocked out easily, while traditional martial artists take more than 2-3 hard punches, especially when they train for mind clarity and breathing techniques. Sparring doesn't depend on training for the longest hour, it just shows skill and respect to other martial artists. I don't support how martial artists use their martial arts to beat up people, make them bleed, break their bones, etc. While traditional martial arts actually has a purpose not trying to break its principles.

    This was excellent! Some of the critics commenting below just don't get it. Traditional Kung Fu is an incorporation of a well balanced lifestyle, manner of thinking and interaction with one's own environment. Fighting is just one of the aspects. Most true high-skilled martial artists like the ones featured here, while they can do major damage to an opponent's body, are not interested in "kicking someone's butt" and always prefer to humbly walk away from an actual confrontation with a troublemaker, when possible. There are too many thuggish cowards out there ready to pull out a gun.

      ACLTony It's such a letdown that legit Chinese Kung Fu GrandMasters would never go all out and showcase their talents in a fight show. Culture plays an immense role.
      Bruce Lee is an excellent example of a Chinese Kung Fu practitioner brought up in ways of both Western and Eastern cultures. His pride and cockiness was what brought him fame and fortune, but was also a catalyst to his own demise. In his defense, he knew he had to be twice as prideful and boastful in order for Western audiences to acknowledge him. Remember during his time, not even African Americans were acknowledged in showbiz.
      I believe Lee was just the tip to the iceberg of Chinese traditional martial arts.

    The thing to remember about martial arts is that they all include internal and external aspects. The biggest difference between the two is the way they are taught - internal arts tend to begin with efficient power generation, before following on to how to apply that to techniques, while external arts tend to begin with learning techniques, before following on to how to generate power efficiently. They both end up in the same place; they just have different starting points.

      The only thing I know about the Bodhidharma is he bring buddhism, yoga and meditation to China that's all. Later the Shaolin always get attacked so they ask the people who know Kung Fu to teach them so that can protect Shaolin and themselves. So this means the people in ancient China already know kungfu long before buddhism reach there. If kungfu is important in buddhism, then it should be inside the buddhist script everywhere. But NO, kungfu is NOT a part of buddhism. Buddhism is Buddhism and Kungfu is Kungfu.
      Bodhidharma is busy seeking truth in life and help people. He has no time observe animal fighting and learn Kungfu.

      Internal martial art = Bodily exercise complemented by meditation. Buddhist meditation is subset of meditation (probably the most detailed and famous one at that) and it influenced Chinese martial arts as a result. Martial arts existed long before Buddhism reached China. Martial arts originated from soldiery, not from religion.

      Although there is debate over who started the system, I agree that Tai Chi Ch'uan (Taijiquan) started as a Martial Art. The concept of Taiji as a philosophical concept certainly predates Taijiquan and has to do with the understanding of Yin and Yang which is very ancient. Taijiquan as a martial art takes a variety of movement and meditation practices, and fighting techniques and reinterprets them according to the concept of Yin and Yang.

      Actually, Master Longfei is working on creating first an online training school, then a base in New York. I believe he'll be starting a kickstarter campaign soon to raise funds to create a training book and online course, so if you're interested, keep an eye out for that!

      There are also Kung Fu Academies in China. I want to stay at one for a year and really transform into something better, if that makes sense.

    This mental development of finding your inner balance is something that I feel is completely missing in Western societies. When it comes to challenges and stress we are not taught how to cope with this at all, being tough, having grit, being egoistic, all these advices won't make you last much if you do not have a source of energy to draw from. Yoga and meditating techniques were discovered by the West in the late 60s but they are not a cultural part of our society yet and are not practiced enough. Religion does a bit of that for some people but it's not the same, since it focuses to build dependencies of their followers rather than making them better people. Medication or therapists are another answer people seek. The rest tries to make itself happy with compulsive behaviours, may this be consuming drugs, alcohol, food, media, sex ... none of those quick fixes can really restore inner happiness.

      I blame religion. western countires have all abrahemic religions like christs, jews, islam. its 2000 years old and some old rules was good like jesus said respect your parents,dont do to others what they should dont do to you etc. but then came the church and stuff and they created a powerful empire. the old rules are gone and people compare it with feudalism things like woman have to obey man etc. most people left religion and took capitalism. but capitalism doesnt have any tradition. people cant identify. usa hasnt any old folk tales, in europe its get more and more away and people cant identificate with anything but tv shows and sport teams. in south east asia you havent that cause they invented buddshism and taoism,konfuzianism what is older than all this monotheistic shit and its still good cause its a tradition from the people to the people. you can become calm and chilled and find yourself instead praising someone and forget your indivuality for god.western people often mistake spirituality with some freaky eso guru hippie shit.western is just finding hope in god or finding hope in consumption.religion destroyed the own will to find yourself and capitalism destroyed your identity to find you in the past.it made mankind to an empty bottle.
