@@jakem8504 The Pokemon TCG isn't actually a more popular game than YuGiOh. It sells a lot more packs but only like 10-15% of people who buy Pokemon packs actually intend to play the game. It's almost entirely all collectors and people trying to flip cards for money. This makes content like this a lot less common. It does have the upside of making the actual game crazy cheap. Tier 1 meta decks are like 50-150$, which is insane considering you can pay double that for a single card in YuGiOh.
Yugi and Kaiba literally played a voice activated hybrid form of hologram Master Duel via computer for the whole anime series tho lol. Master Duel players are playing the game as intended by Takahashi.
I'm old school that just started playing master Duel even I know you can only have 3 of 1 card in your deck omg, it's like back in the day when we didn't know the rules as kids and just summoned as many monsters as we wanted omg no
I played irl but now masters because I dont have time to go in person. However, it's only slightly different. Its crazy how TCG players make themselves to be surperior players.
Most common thing I've had with master duel players ar locals is "Nah I didn't bring a side deck you do whatever" and then they get hard-countered the next duel.
As a masterduel playing who dabbles into tcg, chain linking is different idk how to explain it but like trigger effects as well plays a huge part if you don’t know all the rules as yet it hurts if you playing against good players.
It's not complicated, as someone who has played since the early 2000's nothing has changed about the basic mechanics, minus the draw on turn 1, other than that everything is the same. I quit around 2006, and came back in 2013 or 2014, then quit again in 2015. Then i came back about a Month ago. The only thing I don't understand 100% is exactly how link summons work. Because in master duel sometimes you can only use certain material, regardless of the conditions on the card, you can't use whatever materials you want. And through small amounts of research I have yet to find a reason why those specific materials are required for the link summon and it seems to just be a problem with master duel. But I am aware that you have to summon to either the extra zone, or to where a link monster is pointing, I got that much. What i don't understand is why i have to use specific materials that master duel is telling me i have to use, even if I have a board that meets the conditions without having to use that monster. The other problem with master duel, "If you opponent summons 5 or more times" okay.... so why can't I Niburu after 15 summons??? Nothing is preventing my summon, so why can't I use it? But anyway, nothing else has really changed. Turn player activates effect, and then turn player has priority to chain an effect that would activate at the same time. What that means is say say player A tributes a monster to summon another one. Monster A has an effect when tributed, Monster B has an effect when summoned. The turn player has priority on both those effects, since they are simultaneous, and they will be CL1 and 2. Depending on the order that Player A chooses to resolve decides how Player B can respond. For example, player B cannot respond with Ash Blossom to whatever effect is CL1. That is called chain blocking, and has existed forever. However something like Effect Veiler or Imperm, can be used on the monster on the field to negate it's effect. Since they are not specific in their activation timing, they don't require an effect to be activated. That has not changed at all. Turn player always has priority in a chain, with simultaneous effects. For effects that do not activate at the same time Player B has priority to respond to the previous effect before player A can chain another effect. An example of this is "When" vs "If" When Effects will trigger simultaneously and Player A has priority to activate all when effects before player B can respond. If they are If effects, since the timing is not specific, Player B can respond to effects in order of resolution and interrupt as necessary. It's not complicated. "When summoned, when tributed", both of those happen at the same time, both effects happen at the same time. Player A can Chain block. "When summoned, if tributed." Those effects do not happen at the same time since the tribute effect is not specific on it's timing. For 2 when effects, they must be CL1 and 2, and turn player chooses the order, since they are simultaneous. For a when and If, turn player must activate the when effect as CL1, then Player B has the option to respond as CL2, unless player A has another when effect such as a spell or trap. Player A can activate the If effect of monster B at any point in the chain even as CL 12 if the chain builds that high, since it's timing is not specific. Now i don't know if TCG still uses priority which was stupid and should never have existed. Priority was when a player called priority when summoning a monster, ensuring it's effect could be activated upon summon. With cards like bottomless trap hole and torrential tribute, they have to respond to a a successful summon, where as a card like solemn warning prevents the summon. So priority was a window after the summon where the effect was triggered before a summon response from the opponent, which was really dumb and should never have existed, because it was used to activate effects that didn't happen on summon, like card trooper mill which should not be able to activate, but because technically the summon was successful if Torrential was used there was a ruling that card trooper could technically trigger before torretial. Chaining isn't complicated, it's just understanding the difference between when and if, and then understanding other stupid little things konami does to make players happy.
I played yugioh since dark magician and blue eyes starter decks. Watched the shows. Played duel links , master duel, etc. played the games. I always wanted to compete in local games and who knows maybe even tournaments. Any suggestions? Where do I start? Local card shop?

It's more of a shot at master duel players, who don't actually understand the mechanics of the game, which is fair because they change the mechanics every few years for their new gimmick. But also, I watch a lot of master duel content which is from players that have been playing for years, and it's always I don't know what this card does It was glowing so I clicked it. NGL I do the same thing, cause i don't feel like reading a text book, I just hope the effect is good and it usually is, occasionaly it's an effect that screws me, but that's what I get for not reading. But i don't know I've been playing since the very beginning, with very long breaks in between and online games are the only way I can play anymore, because I'm not spending money on the physical cards to spend money to go to a physical location, to spend money to play in a tournement to potentially win a small insignificant amount of money, for a card game that doesn't matter to me. The last time I played the physical card game Maxx C was at three. I have never once complained about how unfair the card is. You know what's more broken?, going second, with no negates and your opponents opens with the nuts and you scoop to game 2. How is that not more broken than Maxx C??? But you know, player A just played better... That's why yugioh is so dumb now having to listen to people talk about YCS tops and Regional tops, when it's a game of 100% luck of what cards you get in your opening hand. And with most decks being two card combos it's almost impossible to not have a board as player 1. I play master duel cause I don't have to waste money getting a deck together, just for that BS. When i started master duel I played Black Wings, do you know how many 2 card combos there are in that deck. And if you are smart enough to still play Vayu which alot of black wing players don't for some reason, you have a literally unbeatable board. I still play Quasar because it's that good. Most players try to play the meta effect burners but they have no protection. I on the other hand end up with Quasar, Assault Dragon, Full Armor, the Lvl 10 sword soul, the one that pops from the grave. Good luck.
