I'd forgotten how primitive things were back then. I'd also forgotten how beautiful the Superbirds were. I could listen to the deep bellow of the 351Cs all day. Thanks for the post.
These were forging memories to a young blonde haired little aussie larrikin at 7yrs old.. I went on to buy myself one of these beautiful big Falcon coupes at 19, after drooling over them every year watching this great race.. should never have sold it.. I've missed it every day ever since...that was 1988.. worst decision of my life..LOL
I had a friend buy a Falcon XY 351 in 1971. He drove it from Sydney to Perth to see his family for the Christmas holidays; he sold it immediately on his return to Sydney. He was astounded at how much fuel it used on the trip. We were all first year tradies and just could not afford fuel guzzlers like that.
Owned 3 XA Coupes Inc a GT. Plus more. Specialist mechanical engineering business for 30yrs. Coupes were definitely the best looking and toughest Aussie muscle
Evan Green was my all time favourite motoring journalist & race commentator. Will Hagon was a stalwart of car & motorcycle racing commentary. It was he who noticed Barry Sheene spectating a televised race at Surfers Paradise Raceway, and invited him up into the commentary booth. Barry's commentary career was born that day.
Both Evan Green & Will Hagon sounded amazingly alike. Evan Green was a brilliant Motor Sport commentator. Will Hagon commentated the Bathurst 1000 on Channel 7 from 1965-1975 before switching to the ABC.
Pushing the cars off a muddy paddock onto the grid! Amazing. Love to spot Alan Moffat helping put up the team tent. Drivers today wouldn’t have to do that
I remember hearing about rumors the local lads would head up bathurst during off season and buried boxes of alcohol, then when race is on thay would set up tent on top of alcohol and dig it up .around the top of the mountain
I've heard similar stories. I think the motor cycle race at Easter was even more interesting. I heard stories about the police station on the top of the mountain was put under siege several times.
Impressive video from 1974,way to go Australia. You can tell people in America you missed a opportunity. Similar to NASCAR. As well as International touring cars
The day was miserable weather wise. I had a Kawasaki 900Z1. I bought a big port XBGT coupe after that because i wanted one and so did my girlfriend as she was wrapped! She's long gone. I've still got the coupe. Hell, don't know where she is , don't care. The coupe is fully restored.
Such a shame so little of this race is available I'd love to see the whole race but unfortunately this is all there is available Brock was ahead by 6 laps by lap 114 I think it was till the motor blue up first Bathurst with l34 they were miles ahead of the Ford's this year in qualifying it was about 4 seconds a lap faster fuck those hdt toranas sounded fantastic with those webbers they had about 380hp in 1974 I'd love to have the hdt motor in my car may not be considered fast at all these days but I don't care
@@rodneyjones4890 Yeah the LH L34 was a bucket of shit, poorly constructed, massive understeer, and prone to oil surge. ''Agricultural'' would be a kind way to describe it. A mate had one of the Big Tanks but with a bombed out injected 308. Horrendous to drive, but Christ did it honk along, when it was on song. Give me an XA anyday! Tough lookin' cars.
Australian touring cars are dead along with Australian cars and no one cares anymore about Holden and Ford Falcons so enjoy your chinese made EV and shutup.

A Absolute classic coverage of a motor race at the Mt thank you so much for this Gem of a story ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The first Bathurst race I watched on tv was the 1974 race. An enormous amount has changed.
Love it how they used to drive the cars up from Melbourne have a race and drive home again.

From 69 to 82 the greatest motor racing on the planet.
100%.
No matter how bad things happen to the driver, they seem to be so calm. It's such a nice feeling to see that
That Brut 33 XB has to be one of the best looking racecars in history.

That mini crash that started at 24:03. those track runners were crazy.
I agree, that was scary to watch especially when another car but the fence at the same spot.

You should look up Evan Green and the supercar scare - which killed off the Ford XA Falcon GT-HO Phase IV and the Torana V8.
I was there that day as a 19 yo. Those were the days when you could relate to the cars that were racing.
13:40 WTF? More fuel going in the boot than the bloody tank. Rough and ready in those days.
Fantastic stuff

One of the 33 Bathursts I attended. @Peter Zivkovic did you have a relative in Berrima?
you beauty! go the big fords. they were better days in some regards.
The L34 was called the Kellogs Torana by some because at that stage they went snap, crackle and pop.
Congratulations to the XA Falcon, winning the 1973 and 1974 Bathurst. To finish first ,first you must finish

Why was it necessary to hide alcohol? Was it banned to the spectators at that time?
Also, how on earth would you police that? Its like the war on drugs, just a pointless waste of time and money.
@JohnH1 thanks for taking the time to explain that

It (beer) was restricted to one slab per person per day.

Was the minis the only front wheel drive car to win at bathurst with only a 1275cc engine against all thoses V8s
26:17 thats my great uncle in the mcrae car that aquaplaned

Why you call them chook houses they are hardtops you maggott
Love Gossy’s XA GT Coupe
I was 5 years old. My eldest is about to turn 20. wtf
In 1974 there were a lot of caaaaars.
I can remember when a kangaroo jumped across conrod straight and hit roof of car at about 250kph turned to mince
Safety back then was mental 🤣
Hear those Cleveland 351s.
In 1974, "one day every year" ??? You were obviously comatose on the Easter Long Weekend.
its the xu1 smoker adition

WTF are you on about ? This is not the race Brock was ahead by 6 laps or won by 6 laps. WHY even turn a Ford victory into dribbling about Holden ?

The Torana’s were much better race cars than the Falcons.

Which car looks the best???? Not that Dead Brand Holden. Crikey Dick, it was primitive.
Australian touring cars are dead along with Australian cars and no one cares anymore about Holden and Ford Falcons so enjoy your chinese made EV and shutup.
And not the other dead brand Falcon!
At least you could see out the windows of the Torana. The Falcons had more blind spots than Stevie Wonder.
