- In Dulci Jublio, set to music by J.S. Bach.
Sung by the Sixteen
I have unfortunately had to exclude the organ introduction and middle sections due to not being able to locate the full score - so if anyone has a PDF i would be most interested -, this explains the slightly odd cut before the last verse.
According to the CD booklet (and verified by my research) the first setting is Bartholomew Gesius from 1601 (though his was of course in German/Latin rather than English/Latin), the last verse is Bach BWV 368, one of his chorale settings that stands alone. Omitted from this recording are two chorale preludes on the same melody, the first Bach BWV 608 from the Orgelbüchlein, the other Bach BWV 729, which is a highly ornamented version often played at King's College for Nine Lessons and Carols. The recorded order is Bach 608 - Gesius - Bach 729 - Bach 368 and is an extremely satisfying package!
Many moons ago, when some of us were choristers, our old choir master would explain every line of certain carols, as we prepared for the Festivals of Nine Lessons and Carols as Christmas approached.
One interpretation was that we had to sing as though we were seeing the nativity through the eyes of the Magii, who knew how the life of this newborn would unfold, knowing there is nothing they can do, yet accept the Will of that which they cannot change.
Hence the tempo having a mix of a slow and anguished tempo though the words should be that of joy.
Many thanks for uploading!!!
L' ha rifatta anche Mike Oldfield, ovviamente velocizzata , alla sua maniera.
Jesus Christ, born in glorious humility as King Of World....
I'm in a cathedral choir and every time I sing or listen to this it makes me cry. I sing the alto line.
Which cathedral?
In Dulci Jubilo is one of the best known macaronic songs out there...sure it was originally Latin+German but the whole point of it being macaronic was to be a mix of Latin and the Vernacular.

Me too
Navidad, me saca sentimientos esta bellísima melodía!
I seriously love all music genres. From rap to choirs, From celtic to heavy metal, from pop songs to classical. From hiphop to opera. Every kind of music has something unique. Of course there are songs that i don't like, i only like the songs with a special meaning or message. Also ones that i don't hear much like these sound so unique to me. I really enjoy listening to this.
Heavy metal is pure classical. It's just played faster :).
Hello old me. New me still likes this song 👀
@@ELNatureProductions nice way to put it 😆
2:04 is the Bach harmonization
Do you have a PDF of this? Would love to have my choir do it!
Damn, it's August I should not be listening to this
XDDDDDD
It's Bach - his music cannot be set for any particular time of the year. Such music should be played 365/year. Viva Bach!
@@captebbtide It has been adopted. People think choirs are for Christmas. Eastern Canada here. Snow last night. This music is timeless, rain or shine. Viva Bach.
Well, it is now Dec 23, 2020, so listen again now. :)
The subtlety and delicacy in their a capella voice.(.in Latin and English, no less) .I am a awestruck....
Anyone have the music to this, including that amazing last verse!?
So angelic... So beautiful
Wow, that last verse. Glorious!
Those who said it is not J.S.Bach are right. The tune is German Carol of 14 century. May be Johann Michael Bach harmonized and arranged it , I do not know, but he is not a composer of this melody.
Just to clarify: Subthordxd said Johann Michael Bach (father-in-law of J.S.Bach) composed it. As I said it is German Carol of 14 century, so no Johann Michael Bach, no anyone else could compose it, he could only harmonize and arrange this medieval tune.
Always a joy to hear regardless of the season and this group is just so sweet and wonderful
It seems that this music is now credited to Johann Michael Bach, who was Bach's (J.S.) father in law... but maybe it was actually an ancient song... ? nobody knows perhaps
Love Bach!
in the choir i'm in, we just got this song today ..! exactly this version, and at 2:05 me and the rest of the bass section got a big surprise :) ! that is very hard to sing! but luckily i found this video, have to learn it by heart' then it's much easier to sing!!
The bass ranges from a D2 to a C4, that is a lot to ask for, bach! the C4 is just so high for me...
I love choirs! :)
Bunch
Hitashi son hey could you attach a link to the sheet music for this arrangement if you still have it? Want my choir to do this.
C'est vrai, ce passage est difficile....
J'ai trouvé une autre version BWV 368.......encore plus difficile, surtout pour les basses !!!!
Bon courage !
Holst! This Have I Done ...
Mendelssohn, op. 79 n.4-5-6
I'd like more from Palestrina, Lasso, and earlier, but I'm afraid I'm going too far in conceiving their anthems and motets as "carols". XD
The notes displayed are not the same as the notes sung. Mostly the same, but there are key differences. I noticed in the bass line first, but also in the soprano (next last bar of each verse), and the tenor also is different. They match at the last verse, though, I believe.
You have very good ears. I wouldn't hear that...
Do you have the score?
I agree, as a Bass it makes a nice sing for a change!
I first heard this in C’Mon C’Mon (one of my favorite films of 2021) and immediately searched this up when I found the title in the credits. The film utilized classical music so well!
Set speed to 2x - Hi, Mike Oldfield! :)
It took a twisted mind to do that. I admire that in a person. :)
FWIW, that was a regular recording method used by Mike Oldfield - record one octave down at half speed, get higher octave on playback at full speed. It's how he did the fast part in the Blue Peter theme.

My friend, this piece was composed by Johann Michael Bach. Recently, musicians confirmed that this piece, despite the fact that it was atributted to J. S. Bach, was composed by Johann Michael Bach
It actually predates an Bach by about 300 years :D
This piece has a medieval structure, by no means it's baroque. It was composed around the 14th century and it's attributed to Heinrich Seuse, a german friar. Beautiful carol nevertheless.
Any other suggestions or requests for carols to upload? Needs to be out of copyright so no modern stuff (Rutter et al.)
is this song free to use in a video or live im looking for no copyright song for prayer moments...
just love this song sang it when i was in school
I can't believe that contemporary material is off limits. I understand the whole copyright thing, but it's not like we're printing these out for a hundred singers in a choir. That really sucks because it us very educational to see what's going on. I purchase lots of sheet music for my choirs and I also buy the recordings as well. Thanks for posting what you are allowed to.
That word setting of the final verse is suspect. Words don't fit at the beginning. Úbi sunt gáudia.
I'd love to have this music sheet, but i cannot find it on the web. Could someone help me please?
I love this! I have only heard… learned it in German and Latin
... trying too hard, missing the point for me. zzzz.
Good evening, where I can find the full score of this song in pdf format?!
This sounds just like Telemann's setting for In Dulci Jubilo...
J,S. Bach with O little one sweet is up
Magnificent!
If thing were right in the World, this would have 104 million views, not just 104 thousand,
You are 100% right (seriously). Happy Holidays to you and your family in 2021 and always!
Absolutely beautiful!
Ññb
Do you a pdf of this music?
I sang this song always in Achimota school 🥺❤

Gregoriano, ab origine.
you cut and spliced and timed the sheet music so perfectly to the recording -! You figured that out so perfectly!
(I mean the recordings, plural?? )
The last verse does sound like J. S. Bach
at my school the song is different in our choir
Pufff
Measures 23-24 (looks like) of the Bach version here: possibly the two most beautiful instances (on "are" and "-gels") of 2-3 suspensions in music history. And the slow tempo in this performance adds to the beauty.
This is correct. Only the part that starts at 2:05 is arranged by Bach (it’s BWV 368). The first part is from another (probably later) arranger.
@@TheSummoner Thanks for the comment!
Hector Barrionuevo - You are welcome! In case you don’t already know about it, check Kempff’s piano transcription of the original. It’s by far my favorite version along with Bach’s.
@@TheSummoner Will listen to it, thanks again ! Piano + chorale = beauty! And, he's a pianist I've listened to for ages.
Hector Barrionuevo - I should warn you beforehand that it’s not a chorale, it’s just a piano arrangement of the original melody. A really beautiful one though.
Why is this in english?
This is the Praetorius.
magnificent. very much i like

Predivno🌟🎶💙✨🎶🙏
This last part!!! WWWWOOOOOWWWW :D
Only the part from 2:05 is by Bach.
Exatamente, essa parte sim é arranjo de Bach
Muy bello
This sounds more like Holst than Bach.
Because you probably are hearing Holst. Holst's Christmas Day is basically set to the first setting of this with a few minor rhythm changes.
Beautiful
This is not Bach. It dates back to the Middle Ages.
Guy Laurie:
Good morning.
This is from Praetorius, transcribed by Bach in a simpler way.
The original version is much more grandiose.
Also "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" by Hassler, was put by Bach in bwv 244. (listen).
Every great composer, as well as writing his own things, made arrangements on other pieces.
Handel composed "sarabanda" on the first notes of Vivaldi's "madness".
There are many other examples. Hi, good music.
Greetings from Italy.
It's not an originally Bach peace
The last verse is a harmonization by Bach; I can't speak for the first few, though.
You're right...it's a Bach War
Utter rubbish. These guys seriously need to listen to Mike Oldfield’s original. Much better.
What makes Oldfield better?
That's way too boring
@@chukwukaonyenze7450 you’re boring David
As much as I love The Beatles...they got nothing over Johann Sebastian Bach. Effin' georgeous...
