DONKEY RC Cargo Plane

- A long-overdue tricycle gear high wing single motor cargo plane. I hope this will be my all-rounder parkflyer, fun for dropping stuff but also just flying around, doing short takeoffs and touch-and-go's.
The 12oz can dropping idea was designed with the though that at some point I might as a novelty deliver beer for actual consumption. But I will probably transition to dropping water balloons for accuracy drops at the park.
There will be no plans or stepwise build video but I will make a detailed bench video of all of the construction techniques so a builder wishing to make a similar plane could get some ideas. The basic airframe is all EA foamboard techniques plus some basic balsa parts. The cargo bay and door and landing gear do add some complexity so I would recommend this for an intermediate builder and up.

ePlastics Micarta. This stuff comes in all thicknesses and sheet sizes. I used the .060", which is 1.5mm thick. The shipping is silly expensive but I was in San Diego and picked it up.: www.eplastics.com/Plastic/G10_...
Turnigy NTM Prop Drive 3536 1400KV motor "The Powerhouse". Note this 10x7 3-bladed prop generates enormous thrust for takeoff but it overprops this motor. Very conservative power settings must be used in flight to avoid overheating. A 10x5 2-bladed prop is a better choice for general use for this motor.

TapeBrothers OUTDOOR vinyl tape. This stuff is awesome. Be careful not to get the vinyl "marking tape".

A very nice flier and excellent cold beer delivery system! Thumbs up Ed!
I like the simplicity of your designs and the fact that you cover the planes so they look good as well. "Blockey" isn't a bad thing. From 250 ft. up, who cares ? Right ?
Looks like a Pilatus PC-6 Porter. Solid looking and flies nicely.
Ed, This might just be my favorite of the many designs that you have... As always you have inspired me to build another plane.
Thanks for all the great videos.
I love the design of this plane! I can't wait to start making it!
(Sherk shouts) Donkey!!! Nice build Ed and I like the Navy colors!
Excellent. Your designs look simple but have a ton of great design work. Looks really stable. Good to see ya back - been a while.
Josh is not a noob but a trainee.
REALLY, REALLY nice to see a 2014 model... a sweet plane. Haven't built an EA design for months so I am months overdue. Thanks Ed!
great to see you posting again Ed..
thanks for the continued inspiration :D
This donkey is cool!!!
it tracks perfectly on those short patio takeoffs.... mostly also due to the generous vertical fin...which I like a lot.
Well done Ed!!
Oh buddy, I learned that the hard way. I always go big on the vertical stabilizer nowadays. I had some scary designs early on while trying to skimp on the fin. As my favorite barber used to say in my younger days: "I can take it off but I can't put it back on". Same with control surfaces, huh?
ExperimentalAirlines
LOL !!!! Barbers can be great sources of humor !!! I agree !!
I love watching this video! Thanks for always inspiring people to build and fly :)
Another great design. Great to see you back with a Video.
Glad to see you back doing vids! Life gets busy of course!
Great plane! Wish I could join you with those cargo drops. I'm always impressed with the fine details of your workmanship. Look forward to seeing more!
Love it a usual Ed! Can't wait to build one myself.
Another good looking great flying plane....nice job ED
Great build: I luv looks of tail dragger/ but props gets expensive/ tricycle is way to go! luv the air breaks!
You are still failing to disappoint, Ed! This new "Donkey" is very cool! Nice build!!!
Loved this build Ed . . you've inspired Thomas to have a go at some sort of heavy lift aircraft!!
Very nice work I miss ur videos keep them coming
Great to see you flying agin , I hope to do the same soon .
Great vid Ed, i just built some of your parachutes and a deployment release and my buddies and i have had a blast with it, i am now in the process of building three black chutes and attaching them all three to a toy Army Tank to drop, we'll see how that goes LOL. Anyway just want to thank you for a great channel and for sharring all your fun and great ideas. My good friend Derek (mountaindewdude76) turned me on to your channel. Take care my friend and keep up the good fun, Terry
You are a craftsman sir! You give us all great info and ideas for Rc plane builds thanks!
Thanks man, I'm sure you could do even better! Make something amazing and let me know at experimentalairlines@gmail.com. I only send out some ideas to start with. Your creations are probably more impressive than mine.
ExperimentalAirlines I do not understand the steps in your speech, you can write the measurements of the length of the wing and the fuselage? thanks I write from italy
Really nice and very easy design as always Ed. I like how it looks with the 3-blade prop.
Hermosillo, Sonora, México.
Awesome as allways Ed :)
Your channel is a great place for inspiration!
Rett tilbake på deg sir, you have some great stuff going on yourself. Hope to fly with you sometime around your backyard. It would be a great visit for Armin and me.
Nice to see you doing videos again... Nice design!
i fly the $1.00 delta it flys great!!
You should do a build video to help people who want to make it be able to fallow along especially first time builders
I envy you for your energy to follow ideas and build new stuff. This plane looks like fun.
You might also strech your vertical stabillizer a bit forward over the fuselage instead of building some kind of a tower, lol. Looks slicker and also provides you with more surface too. It´s often done on big and model planes.
This is awesome! I plan to make a mini version maybe.
like always great work Ed,, Keep them coming,, South Africa
Very nice plane :) Your only limit is your imagination!
Pretty nice! Some day I'm going to build one! 😃
Great plane! I would love a build video.
I liked the Immelmann turn Ed. I keep meaning to build more of your ideas. I will get round to it, really. :¬)
Denmark loves you Ed! Awesome video and deign
Sweet, brother, Denmark is where I would go if I could not be in the USA. You guys do it right!
Thanks, i am very glad to hear that. Although the rules for modelflyers are a little strict ;D
Very nice build Ed, I always thought that flitetest would do a follow up of the J Scott ,We never saw a lot of what it was capable of, Great to see to 2014 build The "DONKEY" I like saying it too ,Enjoyed Thanks
I've probably watched this video 10-12 times and I laugh each time when you bark out "Donkey!" lol. Too funny! I'm really loving this plane!!!
MUY BUENO
LES MANDO UN GRAN SALUDO DESDE ARGENTINA .
This might be my new favorite Plane!!
Carmine ✈🚂🚙
thank you so much for explaining how to scratch build foam board planes I am a total noob but I think even I can build these.
Hello Jerrell! I just noticed your comment on this video. I've been a huge fan of Ed, and his build techniques, for many years. I have several of his plane designs and they are all very good planes. You mentioned that you are a "noob"....well, we all were "noob" at some point and, let me tell you from my experiences....Ed's build techniques and planes are amazing, easy to follow and easy to produce....and lots of fun. I also have a slightly modified version of the Experimental Airlines "Donkey" and I've had a lot of great fun with it. Best of luck with your builds!!!!
I too have always derived great pleasure from saying "Donkey" EE HAH!!! The Donkey is another quality airframe with a great fit, finish, and function.
By the way, the "boys" at hobbyking did not really show your gift the respect it deserved, in my estimation.
I know, right?! Where does the "Donkey!" come from? Good fun in any case. Yes, I wish the FliteTest guys had more fun with the J*Scott but they have a lot of other stuff going on. I love dropping things, always looking for some excuse.
Ed, Great plane. I am, an AMA District AVP in Colorado, working with 15 high school students that just recently formed an RC club. They were looking for a plane they could all build that could be used for a trainer for the new pilots but also have more advance features like a bomb drop, flaps, and that could also carry a FPV system. This meet all those needs. So to help them with the building, I created a full set of build drawing to go along with your various build video's. I would happy to provide the drawings to you and your subscribers if anyone would like a copy. Thanks for your great work and designs. Keep them coming.
+Rick McCaskill
Rick, I am just starting out in the RC hobby and I am wanting to build planes with two of my grandchildren. I would greatly appreciate it if you would send me a copy of your build drawing for the Donkey RC Cargo Plane. Thank you
+David Hunter If you can send me your email address I will email you the file.
+Rick McCaskill
I contacted you earlier about the plans for the donkey cargo plane.
My email address is hhiatlanta@gmail.com.
Thank you,
David Hunter
Do you still have the plans for the Donkey available?
You should make the hatch open and close. Cool design,
What servo did you use for the nose wheel steering?
Hi Ed what flight time do you get w 5A batt and no cargo?
Your builds are just amazing!!!! How long did it take for you to build this plane?
Hello there, few months ago I found FliteTest youtube channel and decided to try the hobby, after a few days I found your channel and need to say the armin wing and fuselage construction tutorials made my life much easier! I've made a few models already using those techniques, it's awesome!
Recently I've been working on a "Bixler/Axon" plane, something to save my props on landing (since the place I fly got no grass, just asphalt...) and I would like to know if you can help me with some tips, like the motor angle, minimun KV needed for this kind of plane, dunno, guess you've tried a few pusher models already!
Thanks for the channel and keep the good work!
This looks exactly like my senior design project lol
Yes the name is very fun to say. Especially the way you said it! Haha.
Looks like a great design. I want to make one.
It is, and I have no idea why. An old boyfriend of my sister once said Donkey this way and it stuck with me. It seemed to fit the bill so I went with it.
Ever made or think of making a drag chute for landing? Think it would be interesting to see.
Great work Ed. Are you thinking of moving to a true mounted wing in your builds, or is that exclusive to this plane?
nice
I was starting a J Scott of my own this winter, then life got in the way. Glad I didn't complete it, I like the donkey better.
what was the song in the background?
great looking plane! gotta build it!!
great music in 3:00
Do you have any very slow-flyer projects that would be easy for children to build and fly? Many thanks in advance!
muy buen avion espero poder hacerlo tan bien como tu algun dia
tell you plz, how much long this wings
Can you make plans for this plane?
Does anyone know if this will tow a ft simple soarer?
How long is it wing (inch) ?
AWESOME Plane Ed. Would have enjoyed a build video as I always enjoy your build videos. They are Always so Thorough and leaves the viewer with a can do feeling. Either way, Cool plane. I love Cargo Planes. I'm still slowly trying to make your wings. Hard to do when you can't use your left arm very well. I've build about 5 of your wings and none came out But I'll get it.
Anyway, Love your new cargo plane.
Have no fear my man, I will do a very thorough "tour" video at least, if not a proper build video per se. You will be able to make your own Donkey, maybe even better than mine. If you ever have any questions let me know at experimentalairlines@gmail.com. Take care, Ed.
The unthinkable has happened!! Although my Dad has not wanted to build a plane, for himself, he has always enjoyed coming out the flying field with me while I fly. I got an email from him, the other day, telling me that he'd like to build a plane for himself. My chin hit the floor, lol. To speed the story up, he has a homemade parachute and 10" action figure that he'd like to be able to drop from altitude. I immediately thought of the "EA Donkey". I showed my Dad your video and he agreed that this is the plane he wants. Because his parachute and action figure are as big as they are, we are making this plane with a few alterations. We going to make a quick order from Hobby King. He's going to use my spare DX6i and I'm going to teach my Dad how to fly rc planes. How cool is that??? I do have a question for you, Ed. How did you secure the balsa wood block to the nose of the plane for the motor to attach to it? Did you simply glue it in?
Ed-Once again you have continued to encourage scratch building! Many thanks. I have also made and flown (an crashed) the J-Scott. Great plane…lazy thumbs! I am now hyped to build the Donkey. Not sure if you mentioned the fuse dimesnsions. I suspect it is similar to the J-Scott. I also only have 3300mAh batts. If I bag the can drop and drop back to a 2836 NTM do you think that will provide enough thrust? I am not really into speed (age 73) I just like the challenge of keeping everything level and reasonable slow. I am flying Dave Powers park jets (F-18 and F-35) and am having great success and fun with those builds. Continue your good work!
I'd like to know more about the parachute and it's deployment. Might you have a video on the subject? Thanks. -COLE
Disregard. Answered at 2:34 min. Thanks,
Awesome plane. Do you fly at Coyote Basin, Ed?
What is the name of the song at 1:50 ?
that should be the next contest how much can you lift
This looks like you are in the Phoenix area, I'm in Chandler. New in town and looking for flying buddies.
what is the weight of this model
really so...o Good
Reminds me of a Pilatus PC-6.
please sir can you tell me its weight
Going Orange RX for non-fpv I see... How is that working out?
The T-Six? It's great bang for your buck for park flying. Wish it had more than 10 model memory, but can't complain too much.
hello friend, this model spectacular and would like to build this model ha possibility of providing the plant or sell? like a lot of your congratulations and thank you channel big hug here in Brazil.
Reminds me a little of a Cessna Caravan...
How about some glider-towing?
Anyone know why it was called Donkey? Or was it just a random name?
please tell me sir ... how much weight of this plane ???
1690 grams roughly 1.5 lbs
Possible design scheme of the plane
There must be something wrong with me. I seem to be the only person on you-tube that would rather hear the actual background sounds from the making of the video instead of an over dubbed music sound track. Other wise a great video.
Holy cow that battery is 73 bucks!!!
a rubber band wold close the hatch after the can had left the bay
Maybe you can put in a Hobby King donkey motor to make it a real donkey flyer
Hi Ed what flight time do you get w 5A batt and no cargo?
