I remember reading that when the Navy announced they could no longer maintain Enterprise, The Enterprise CV 6 Association led by Admiral Halsey got congress to pass a resolution making Enterprise a national memorial. But the Association had to assume full financial responsibility and given only 6 months to raise I believe, 2 million dollars to move and preserve the ship. Being an impossibility, the Association struck a deal with the Navy. Scrap the big E but the first nuclear carrier had to be named Enterprise.

I heard that it also had to do with battle damage. CV 6 was basically only out of drydock with a bandaid slapped across a bullet wound. If you look at texas armor and her problems you can see how hard it would have been to maintain cv 6 as a museum. The armor acting as a delay for the corrosion of seawater. I believe that scrapping was not a good idea but given the circumstances I can understand it
@@vanta_8lack591 She could have been kept in a drydock. The USS Texas should be in a drydock too. So with the USS Olympia. The Fletcher-class destroyer in Boston, next to the USS Constitution, is kept in drydock.
As a lifelong scale model builder, and fan of all things USS Enterprise, both naval and “Federation” this is the holiest of Holy Grails, and I tip my hat to whomever created this amazing masterpiece.
If I am not mistaken, I believe that this was created by a man by the name Bob Gunderson from Colorado. He served on her during WWII. He was a friend of my father’s. I know the one he made is in a museum, in Chino, Ca I think.
@@jonathanbair523 I spoke with my father and he thinks this is Bob’s model. Bob passed away in 2005, so the likelihood of plans existing is small. We will attempt to contact his son to see if he has his father’s work. According to my father who saw it before donating it, there are model crates with engines in them on the hanger deck, so it is SUPER detailed. My belief is that the plans were never fully detailed.

Uncle Jim built model ships like this when I was a kid. I guess they are in a New York museum now. Jim was an amazing craftsman. Jim once told me he had a stroke and had a transformation of his senses. He received a photographic memory from the stroke. Then he started building the ships he was on from memory. He could name every sailor he served with. He hand carved the sailors. I stayed the night at his house when I was very young and he would hand me a few hand carved sailors and tell me the story how he built the model ships. I think it haunted him to have such recall and detail. Several of the ships he was on sank. Jim was a fine craftsman and we miss him.
My father and especially his rear gunner owe their lives to the USS Enterprise. He was able to land his SBD on Enterprise after his carrier, USS Hornet (CV8) was hit by the Japanese during the battle of Santa Cruz in October of 1942. His gunner had been hit and was wounded by 20mm cannon fire from a Zero after he drop his bomb on the IJN carrier Shokaku. His gunner probably wouldn't have survived if he had to ditch near the Hornet.
My father was a TBM pilot in Night Torpedo Squadron 90 on Enterprise as a member on the first ever squadron to fly low level attack missions from carriers at night and in bad weather. He flew the mission mentioned in the video as the first carrier strike on the Japanese home islands on the night of February 17, 1945. His mission that night was to search Tokyo Bay for ships, and if none were found in his assigned sector, his secondary target was an airfield on the Island of Hachijo Jima. Along with his wingman, he attacked the fighter strip with 500 pound bombs and strafed with .50 caliber machine gun fire. Everyone who served on Enterprise said the ship had a soul and was like a living being that the men loved dearly. The Enterprise sank at least 3 of the Japanese carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor.

My father gave me the book the Big E, the story of Enterprise's history, in 1964 when I was 14 years old, and I have read it many times since then. But when he gave it to me, all he said was that the chapter about his squadron was called Hunters in The Dark, but never said what part he played. After his untimely death in 1971, I found a box of memorabilia from his WW II days and found his pilot log book. But in the log where it says "comments", there were none, because what his airgroup did was a secret! I then made it a life mission to figure our what he did on Enterprise and what a journey it has been! Me and my two older brothers followed our father and all became pilots. I flew for United for 29 years and currently fly a corporate plane. I know many intimate details about Enterprise and the war in the Pacific and am willing to share what I know with you. The wife and I went to Pensacola for vacation a few years ago before the restriction for getting on base. As much as I enjoyed looking at the planes and other displays, I wanted to see and touch the Enterprise CV-6 artifacts. I thoroughly enjoyed them and getting to see this magnificent model too. She should have been saved and made a memorial museum herself for all to see and remember the sacrifices made to keep our freedom.
I know the Enterprise was some 215 miles west of Oahu that morning, returning from Wake Island. Those "planes in the air" the video mentioned were some of the 18 SBD's the carrier sent ahead, and by sheer coincidence ran right into the first wave of the Japanese attack. Seven of those planes were shot down (either by friendly or enemy fire) and they recorded one aerial victory.
I just painted metal ammo box my brother gave me while he was a plane captain for F-4A fighter plane on Enterprise during Viet Nam. Once said he'd never been so tired an stimulated at the same time as his tour onboard Enterprise!
The one US Navy Ship that should have been saved after WW2, my father was part of a project in high school in 1957,58 to raise money to make the Big E a museum ship, an effort led by Admiral Bull Halsey. Despite the funds being raised, and a location being selected for her permanent berthing, the Navy chose to scrap her next to the future nuclear Enterprise. What a loss. Saratoga and Enterprise were the ONLY prewar carriers to survive the Pacific Theater.
I live in NJ and took the 1.5 hour trip to pay my respects to the USS Enterprise nameplate and all those that served aboard her. The last piece of USS Enterprise CV-6 is located at the River Vale Public Library in River Vale, NJ. Touching that piece of Pennsylvania steel for the first time, I felt transported to a far away ocean where boys became men and men became veteran war dogs. It's sad 😔 that there is only that to remember her by. However, I was grateful there was something left of that blessed ship.

FYI: The original transom panel rescued from the scrap yard CV-6 "USS Enterprise" is located at Memorial Park in River Vale, NJ. They also have a small display in the library there dedicated to CV-6 USS Enterprise.

As General Dolittle spins in his grave, we will be provided with all the electricity we will ever need.
Yes, these old pieces of American history, it would be nice to keep them around forever but the truth is anything that old it takes constant money because of the bottoms resting through. I got to spend a few weeks on the USS ranger and I'm so glad to have those memories. But it too is gone now. Here in Texas are battleship Texas got hauled away from Houston because it had been trying to just flat out sink for probably 20 years now all the bottom was so paper thin they had pumps going keeping the water out every time they fix a place another one would open. A lot of people hated to see it get moved out but most of the population in Houston these days don't have any connection with it and they couldn't keep enough money coming in to do a full restoration. Luckily some group down the coast I forget where came and got it and they are trying to restore it but it won't be in Houston ever again. I did get to go on it and take a lot of photos so before I left. If anyone is interested there's a place in Lufkin college the knife shop on Highway 69. He has a contract with the government and buys sheets of steel off of all the old naval vessels that they're going to scrap and he can make customized for you out of The Middle of whatever shit he has a piece up there. They're not cheap cuz he hand makes them and forges the metal but they are also a part of the history.
It is an absolute crime against humanity that we don't have the real thing to look at. We've saved four Essexes guys. FOUR. I'd trade two Essexes (Essii?) four one Enterprise CV-6. Or CVN-65, for that matter.
The last I heard the CVN-65 was still at the Newport News Shipbuilding. In fact, the last time I was in the area I could still see it. The Big E is to be stored here until the Navy decides who best to scrap it. As with the CV 6 the process for making it a museum seems to have failed. On this topic, my information is about 5 years old, but last I heard the CV-10 is in danger. The Navy has told the group that operates it at Charleston Harbor to fix some problems. This was going to be very expensive to do and I have not heard what has happened. In all honesty, I have a feeling this situation is why the CVN-65 did not become a museum.
CVN-65 can't become a museum for many reasons the least of which because it was nuclear powered, and not just by one reactor like the Nautilus, Big E had eight! That means huge sections of contaminated steel that have to be cut out from the ship. As many of those sections were structural, replacement structural pieces would have to be designed and fabricated. Also we didn't save the Forestall or the Kitty-hawk because they are both super-carriers and the design is not that different from the Nimitz or the Ford class so letting people walk around and study the ship is not in the interest of National Security. Not saving CV-6 was a tragedy though.

yes, i also think it's sad that they had to scrap her. but on the other hand, i think it was for the best. she had gone through a lot during the war period. she survived a lot of battles. she received a lot of damages. and i think now she deserves her long, peaceful rest. also quoting from barrett tillman's book "enterprise - america's fightingest ship and the men who helped win world war ii", page 257 par 2: "Furthermore, a ship turned into a static museum cannot retain its character. Just as airplanes are craft of the air, ships are creatures of the sea, and both lose something of their essence when tethered to the ground." i imagined if she became a museum ship, she will be forever chained to the port, stripped from her freedom to sail to the ocean for the rest of her life. she can only see or hear her comrades going to places, while she can't anymore. she won't be alone at port, but i feel like it's still lonely... and sadder than getting scrapped and went to her eternal rest...
@@simpingcv6, I couldn't disagree more. History needs to be preserved and no other U.S. warship has ever embodied the fighting spirit and skill at naval arms as did CV-6. It is a national disgrace she was not saved for generations to appreciate firsthand.
In the title of the video it says one to seventy-two (1/72). I did a little research and found out that the actual ship was 809'6" long. If you divide this by 72 the model would be 11' 3" long.
The scale is "1/72", which is a direct ratio between the model and the ship. This means that 1-inch of distance on the model equals 72-inches of distance on the real thing.
Such a historically important ship should NEVER have been scrapped in the 1950s but turned into a museum.
This part a lot of people around the world don't understand. Why scrap the one of most victorious warship in human history.

She should have been berthed alongside the USS Arizona and USS Missouri. Very instrumental in the defeat of the Japanese Empire.

Thanks my dad was the duty CPO on the Enterprise on Sunday December 7th and confirmed the attack and informed Adm Halsey.

The last I heard the CVN-65 was still at the Newport News Shipbuilding. In fact, the last time I was in the area I could still see it. The Big E is to be stored here until the Navy decides who best to scrap it. As with the CV 6 the process for making it a museum seems to have failed. On this topic, my information is about 5 years old, but last I heard the CV-10 is in danger. The Navy has told the group that operates it at Charleston Harbor to fix some problems. This was going to be very expensive to do and I have not heard what has happened. In all honesty, I have a feeling this situation is why the CVN-65 did not become a museum.
CVN-65 can't become a museum for many reasons the least of which because it was nuclear powered, and not just by one reactor like the Nautilus, Big E had eight! That means huge sections of contaminated steel that have to be cut out from the ship. As many of those sections were structural, replacement structural pieces would have to be designed and fabricated. Also we didn't save the Forestall or the Kitty-hawk because they are both super-carriers and the design is not that different from the Nimitz or the Ford class so letting people walk around and study the ship is not in the interest of National Security. Not saving CV-6 was a tragedy though.
The bureaucrats scrapped this famous ship and saved something as banal as the Midway... real smart.
Sad that it is almost impossible for civilians to visit the Pensacola Naval Air Museum :(

yes, i also think it's sad that they had to scrap her. but on the other hand, i think it was for the best. she had gone through a lot during the war period. she survived a lot of battles. she received a lot of damages. and i think now she deserves her long, peaceful rest. also quoting from barrett tillman's book "enterprise - america's fightingest ship and the men who helped win world war ii", page 257 par 2: "Furthermore, a ship turned into a static museum cannot retain its character. Just as airplanes are craft of the air, ships are creatures of the sea, and both lose something of their essence when tethered to the ground." i imagined if she became a museum ship, she will be forever chained to the port, stripped from her freedom to sail to the ocean for the rest of her life. she can only see or hear her comrades going to places, while she can't anymore. she won't be alone at port, but i feel like it's still lonely... and sadder than getting scrapped and went to her eternal rest...
@@simpingcv6, I couldn't disagree more. History needs to be preserved and no other U.S. warship has ever embodied the fighting spirit and skill at naval arms as did CV-6. It is a national disgrace she was not saved for generations to appreciate firsthand.

In the title of the video it says one to seventy-two (1/72). I did a little research and found out that the actual ship was 809'6" long. If you divide this by 72 the model would be 11' 3" long.
The scale is "1/72", which is a direct ratio between the model and the ship. This means that 1-inch of distance on the model equals 72-inches of distance on the real thing.
