Saw this beautiful lady and did the tour with my family 5 years ago. Took me a few minutes to go aboard her. The memories of being on my old naval base were thick. Eyes saw it as it is, my mind saw it as it was. In my mind I could still see all the Navy personnel and the ships the sounds and the smells came flooding back. Plan on going back someday

This is NOT the ship my father served on, the one that launched Doolittle's raid. That one was sunk in 1942 ** (Dad survived. He's still alive). He also served on the USS Iowa: tinyurl.com/yc24n8tp
    From WIKI:
"Eight ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Hornet, after the stinging insect.
    USS Hornet (1775)
was a ten-gun sloop commissioned in 1775, and served in the American Revolutionary War
    USS Hornet (1805 sloop)
was also a ten-gun sloop and took part in the First Barbary War
    USS Hornet (1805 brig)
was a brig-rigged sloop of war launched on 28 July 1805 and sank in a storm on 29 September 1829
    USS Hornet (1813)
was a five-gun schooner used as a dispatch vessel between 1814 and 1820
USS Hornet (1865), the first to be steam propelled, was an iron, side-wheeled steamer
USS Hornet (1898), a converted yacht, was a dispatch vessel in the Spanish-American War
    USS Hornet (CV-8) **
launched the Doolittle Raid in 1942, fought at the Battle of Midway, and was sunk at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 26 October 1942
    USS Hornet (CV-12)
was originally named Kearsarge, but renamed in honor of CV-8 and active through the rest of World War II and is preserved as a museum ship in Alameda, California"

The actions of an operational carrier are varied and intense, especially on the flight-deck. Dangerous is more accurate than marvelous, dangerous and intense, because there are way too many ways to die in a working flight-deck, and every rule for that world is written in blood.

Here is an idea I thought of. Use the flights deck and the main deck as a museum for people to visit. Take the lower decks and turn them into living spaces for old veterans to live in. Even homeless older men or women to live in. They could volunteer to clean up. If one of these ships can hold 5000 people. There is already a galley and kitchen to use. Just need supplies. Gee, I just wondered.

That would be wrong. Boilers and the rest of the engineering plant take regular maintenance to keep them operational, and now the only maintenance she gets is preserving watertight integrity. To that end, a whole lot of valves were removed and blanked-over, pumps removed, etc.

Simply not worth the $20 fee they charge you for the visit.

20 bucks is cheap. USS Intrepid is over 30 dollars. However it is free for veterans. I go occasionally there however it looks nothing like the other Essex-class carriers since the restoration.

That's cheap! Think of how often a person has the opportunity to walk on a Navy ship and hear of its history! It's a great chance to see it in person... To take the tour is worth the price of admission

I disagree, well worth the 20.00 bucks.
