    Steven, you are a gem! We have been streaming our church service for the last few months thanks to your help. We started on the fly with me taping my cell phone to a 10 gallon drink cooler because there was an immediate need. It worked, but wasn't pretty or high quality. Thanks to you, we have a setup that we were able to afford and the quality is great I have shared your videos with several other churches that had a need. Thank you for blessing us. Much love to you and your family from South Carolina.

    Wow, I finally found someone who actually knows what he is talking about. I've been working with pro video since 1978, home video since 1983 and have been live streaming board meetings an an annual convention on RUclips since 2015. Currently have 2 pro cameras (Canon XF-205 and recently added a Canon SA-15) and several Logitech webcams. Instead of a switcher, I use 2 U-Tap SDI to USB adapters for the pro cameras, with some 84 foot amplified USB extension cords for the webcams and everything plugs into the OBS computer. Works very well and have had few problems.

  • @BallastMedia
    @BallastMedia  6 лет назад +5

    If you are only seeing the top or bottom half of your video signal when using the U-tap SDI from an ATEM device. The ATEM is seeing the U-tap as a dual link SDI (SDI level B) connection, and you need to change it to single link (SDI level A). In the settings of the ATEM on the General Tab, under Video Standard there is a "Set 3G SDI output to:" setting that you need to toggle to A.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 лет назад

      Or if you are using a BMD mini-converter there is a setup utility that you can run on your computer through the USB of the converter and toggle it's settings as well.

    • @TheSwampDaddy
      @TheSwampDaddy 5 лет назад

      Yes, but the ATEM will not use level A at frame sizes below 1080. So, it seems that the UTap is not completely compatible. What was the box you didn’t like? Other suggestions?

    Super helpful video and love that you're responsive. I'm assuming you're ranting about the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Mini Recorder but the AJA is a harder sell when it's price is nearly twice that of the Blackmagic. If budget is an issue, would you still recommend the Blackmagic Recorder at all? Is/isn't thunderbolt better than USB 3 for Mac? And has Blackmagic made a list of which cameras that do/do not work with the Mini Recorder?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 лет назад +1

      Oki! The limitation of the MIni Recorder is that it doesn't support 1080p60. As long as your camera can output a different video standard then that, it will work fine. I wouldn't say thunderbolt is better for Mac then USB. What apple calls thunderbolt 3 is actually usb3 on a usb-c connector. It's not backwards compatible, so if you get the Mini Recorder and have a new mac with only usb-c connector, just be aware that you'll need a $50 dongle to convert that to thunderbolt.

    • @gokid
      @gokid 6 лет назад

      Gotcha. If I'm streaming I don't think I'd go 1080p60 so that's good to know. And never knew that about Thunderbolt. Really appreciate the response! Miiiight still go Blackmagic for now just because of price but will def upgrade to AJA when the time comes!

  •  5 лет назад +1

    Hey, thank you so much for all those tips. Just to be sure, does Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder do the same job than AJA U-Tap HDMI ? if yes why do you prefer AJA U-Tap HDMI ? thanks a lot, all the best

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, in that both bring raw video in to your computer. (The Mini Recorder does have both HDMI and SDI connections, but it doesn't support 1080p60 where as the u-tap does, so that's a trade off you need to consider). I recommend the u-tap because #1 you don't have to go through the hassle of installing the BMD Desktop Video drivers to get it to work, just connect the u-tap and it's ready to go. #2 It's USB3 so it will work on a PC or Mac - Mini Recorder is thunderbolt2 only. #3 the u-tap supports 1080p60, which is the video standard that a lot of consumer camcorders output on their HDMI, and #4 this is just my subjective opinion, but I have purchased a lot of BMD gear, and none of it has lasted more then 5 years. Seems like my AJA gear lasts longer.

      Hello, are you using OBS to live stream? You'll probably get the best results using an external USB audio device (amzn.to/3HkMFPc) connected to the computer, and then connecting your sound board to that. In OBS you'll need to add that as the sound source in your scene with the camera capture device (and mute the camera audio). A lot will depend on what camera you have and it's audio inputs. If you are going in to the microphone input of a camera from a mixer (and it doesn't allow you to switch to "line" level input) a better solution I think is to use pair (L&R) of line attenuators, like the Shure A15LA (amzn.to/2NeuqvP) and possibly a hum eliminator (amzn.to/2BH8VT3) if you are getting ground loop buzz. I describe that setup a little more in my video on mixing from an aux: ruclips.net/video/SBpx3cBn5U0/видео.html

      You can connect the audio from your mixer to the camera (if you're camera has that capability) or you can bring the audio in through a separate USB audio device as well.

      Yes, back when I made my original 2017 video the Web Presenter was new and promising. Now that they've figured out the audio sync issues with new firmware, I think it can still be a useful solution for some people. I do think it's overpriced for what most people use it for. It has a lot of features that most people won't use, and there are cheaper more reliable ways to get video in to a computer, like the u-tap.

    Thank you for these videos. They are all amazing. We purchased the u-tap and are using it along with BM TV HD and Sony camera. Audio is direct into BM from our mixer. The signal shows being strong on BM but once we pull up the feed in OBS it is very low. We are having to add gain boost in OBS the get enough level out to hear anything at all. Is there a setting that we have wrong that you think might be causing this? It feels to me like either u-tap, pc, or OBS settings are wrong. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 лет назад

      How are you boosting gain in OBS? The u-tap is going through the system drivers, so check that it's volume is turned all the way up. (Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording -> look for "UT-AUD" -> Properties -> Levels and make sure it's set to 100.) Beyond that I'd run tone from your mixer, the XLR inputs on the switcher at +4dBm, so a 0VU feed from your mixer should see -20dBfs on the ATEM meters. But, there is still 10dB of headroom there, so you can still go up to a +14dBu or -10dBfs on the ATEM meters before clipping occurs. You may just need to run your audio in to the ATEM hotter. Ignore the "green, yellow, red" color and look at the measurement.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  6 лет назад

      Good, better, best option is all the same.... Use 1694a RG6 cable. Otherwise, different manufacturers will use different BNC connectors on the end, etc, but the important thing for SDI cable is that it's RG6. (RG59 will be a lot cheaper, but it's not up to spec for SDI video runs.) I usually make my own cables (I actually have a video about how to make your own cables coming out next week!) but if you want to buy pre-made cables, these are good options, just select your length. amzn.to/2xjW6Zu

    Hi Steven, great videos. BTW: I bought the Vixia r800 since it does 1080p and my older Vixia is interlaced but very high quality. Did you know that the HDMI output of the r800 is 1080p 59.94? So, I set my Atem for that frame rate. During my livestream, OBS was reporting that the encoder was overloaded! The resulting video was extremely choppy. I guess OBS was dealing with more frames. The week before, I brought in multiple cameras via USB webcam and an Elgato dongle and it looked better because the video was not choppy. So, since I don’t want to be forced to set the Atem at 1080p 59.94 and because the r800 does not look as good as my 10 year old Vixia, I guess I need to return the r800 Vixia. Did you know about the fixed output on the HDMI? Other thoughts?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  5 лет назад

      Encoder overload is a data rate thing. Try changing your canvas size to 720p29.97 (and then scale your camera click and drag the red box around it) and then set your bit rate to 2500. See if it's still choppy.

      The main thing to look for is that it's RG-6 cable. (RG-59 is cheaper but thinner wire and doesn't go as long a distance.) Belden 1694A is a very common wire to use. As long as it's RG-6 cable with 75ohm connectors, yes, it is a bit of a sales strategy to label things HD or not. I usually buy a 1000ft spool of Belden 1694A and make my own cables.

      Two questions, are you sure you have the u-tap connected to a USB3 port? (Is it blue and have SS, etc.) Second, in OBS, what are your canvas and output resolution (on the settings, video page) set to and are you scaling the output in the encoder (output page)? Hello, thank you for such a great detailed video. I plan to livestream to Facebook and RUclips. I have a Cannon Vixia HF R400. Have a couple of questions. 1) Would the the R400 work? 2) I do not have a i5 PC with 8GB of RAM, would this work? Thank you.

      R400 should work. an i5 processor can work, you just need to do some tests to make sure it can handle your encoder settings.

    Thanks for your review. If I use a on-camera monitor recorder like atomos or blackmagic video assist will I need any video capture device to live stream if I use a software like vMix or wirecast?

      Hello, yes, if you still want to live stream from the camera you'll still need to take a signal from the camera and run that to a video interface (like the u-tap) and in to a computer to get to vMix or Wirecast. The Atomos and Video Assist are just recording the signal, they don't have any kind of interface in to a computer.

      Ballast Media thank you for your reply. Ok, I see so the on-camera external video recorder does not help in lowering the latency in any way? If so what solution will lower my latency to say below 5 or 3 seconds?
      I can see that there are studio devices out there while at the same time I have a strong 3.5K comipter system. Will a studio device like Roland or blackmagic ones lower the latency? Or lowering the latency has to do with other components? My budget is absolutely max 2k dollars.
