What's interesting is you cannot watch the movie for the first time NOW and get the same experience as you could have THEN when it was first released. The marketing and back story that was created back then complimented the movie so well that it made you suspend your disbelief and you bought the premise of the movie. True. But there's always the occasional youngster who just hasn't heard of this movie. Slice of life: I'm 34 and I have a "little" brother who is 22. When the movie came out he was only 7 so naturally he didn't see it. Well up until last year he had still never heard of it so I explained to him how three students went to make a documentary about a witch in the woods and then disappeared and how the footage was found a few years later, I showed him the promo website which looks very amateurish, etc. Well I sat down with him thinking that would be a great night and it was - he literally shit his pants watching them die not really knowing what was happening. Which was very funny because he's always been quite the skeptic. Let me tell you, though I had seen the movie many times before, that night I was almost feeling as if I was watching it for the first time back in 1999 when everybody was scared to death in the theater.

The acting in Blair Witch Project is how acting *should* be. LOL, the Backstage ad made it sound like they were looking to recruit cast for a snuff film. If they had 2,000 responses...it must be fairly easy to pull a snuff film together, even these days.
It's an excellent horror movie if you watch it 2-3 times and understands it. Many people don't get the end because it happens so fast, and sometimes even pieces from the movie. I think most humans are terrified of the unknown especially when you hear it but can't see, it's way scarier than the typical slasher with a guy and a knife. Being alone in a dark forest, far away from your comfort level, it's horrible !
You can tell when he brought up the movie making $80 million she looked like she was going to cry. Sitting in that chair she had only received $8000 to be in the movie.

You questioning why anybody asks if Star Wars is a true story. That makes no sense. Star Wars was an action-adventure film with special effects that don't exist in the real world. Blair Witch Project was a documentary style that CLAIMED to be real in the very beginning that had no special effects. There's no comparing the two. A better question would be, "Why doesn't anyone ask if Cloverfield is a true story?" But even then, that would still be a ridiculous question.

@hellhase you can believe whatever you want, i suppose. Any sort of logic would tell you that it's not real. I like to pretend i have no logic. It makes the magic seem real. I feel like believing it, and no matter what anyone says, i'll keep believing it until i get tired of it. One day i'll look at it logically and say it's not possible. But for now let me stay in my own world where creatures like the Blair Witch exist in mysterious/creepy settings while killing people behind the scenes :P
@yakumin that's kinda what i think, in a way. I mean, i've learned over the years that no one, unless they're some sort of imaginative genius, can come up with a completely ORIGINAL idea. Everyone bases their ideas and such off of things that they've already heard of or seen before. This could be relative to the movie. Maybe the writer heard of something like this, and made such a film based off of it? Or maybe he really made an original idea. No one but the writer knows for sure :\
I'm HONESTLY not exactly sure what i think of this...i'm reading everything online. When the movie came out, i was four. I only heard about the Blair Witch legend last year, honestly. And i heard about the Blair Witch Project YESTERDAY. At first, i honestly thought, "Wow, i wonder what happened to them." Then i went searching for videos. That's when i heard about the movie. So the question is: Was the movie just a movie, or was it really based off of a true event? Believe what you may.
Ok......i saw the movie 3 days ago and i have never heard that it was fake......i was convinced that it is real......now i feel like the biggest, stupidest, dumbest asshole in the world..........i just gotta say one more thing: All three of the actors deserve Oscars....i have never seen such acting in any of the movies i have seen in my life. And i have watched a lot of movies.....im just amazed by this whole thing..
for it to be really scary you have to put yourself in there shoes thinking what if that was me thats why i love this film it was really scary for 99, now its more of a cult classic i just like the direction it was going for people expected 90's horror which was horrible and got something better but just didn't get it, there needs to be more movies like this, thank god for Paranormal Activity
I've read alot of these comments on here and here's what I say to all of this.Yes this movie was not real, it says so at the end of the credits, though I dont think most people watch those lol.Secondly, the people who are trashing the people who thought it was real need to stop. Its not their fault the filmakers made it to look like it was real and if I may say that means the movie did what it was supposed to then.
im not sure im getting this ovie right. So it's just a movie, fine, but the directors not tell the actors what was going to happen? Heather and Craig talk like if the directors or whoever did stuff and the actors had to develop what they did or whatever. Could someone, who actually knows not just think that they know, explain this?
Thats what made this movie so scary... if you know true fear and terror... this movie was terrifying because you saw REAL FEAR. The first "reality entertainment" showed what happend when you take unsuspecting people put them on camera and mess with their head without them know about it.... THUS "REALITY TV WAS BORN"
It doesn't really say anything for sure. Maybe he just really likes the idea and wants to pursue it. Or maybe the 3rd one is to make up for the 2nd. I kinda choose to believe it, just for the fun of it. I mean, if it's all fake, then that's really no fun at all. So, for my own enjoyment, i pretend it's real. I just hope one day everything will be made clear [[not likely :P]]
nobody claimed it claimed it to be real apart from the viewers, if anyone from the production team claimed it to be real then we would know it was a lie because if it we real there'd be no production team because they would be dead, sooo to sum it all up there is very little possiblity that anyone apart from some dumb viewers claimed it to be real.
i read at wikipedia, that when she goes downstares it´s mike, who was standing there. before there were (on the beginning) a history about this children, who have to stand in a room, when nother child were killed, i know its crazy,(my english is horrible) and i think someone hit her when she fell... i hope you understand my english ;)
I'm very sorry to have to break this to some of the people here, but Superman, R2D2 and Shrek are also "fake". Also, Rocky Balboa was never actually the world champion, there is no place called Hogwarts, and Leonardo Dicaprio wasn't actually on the Titanic. Sorry. But it's time you knew the truth.
i didn't hate it when i saw it in 1999 but it's taken me until watching it recently to realise that it was actually a really really good movie, worthy of its cult status. i used to be annoyed that they lied and said it was true, because seeing it with that state of mind was horrifying. so it worked. great movie. :)
oh helllll fuckin no, u mean to tell me after all these years, this shit wasnt true?u gotta be kidding me that jus fucked up everything i think about true scary movie smh they coulda told somebody, thay never said itk was fake on tha damn dvd cover
Why would anyone in Hollywood dare try to release something that shows what ACTUALLY happened to 3 college students in the woods near Burkittsville Maryland? Who would do that? And why would anyone let them? Seemed real to me for a while.
LOL as I said, listen to the director and producer commentary, the story and mythology are fake, they were created strictly for this movie. how do I know this? I own the DVD and have listened to that commentary numerous times. looks like you should also
No script, camera control, lighting was awful, acting - - wasn't that the point? if you're trying to sell a movie as a documentary based on "found" footage of some kids in the woods, why would you have good production values? it would ruin the effect.
People, so what is fake? It was still a good movie. It was really well done, and it gave me the goosebumps. Is not something to watch in a movie theater though. Is more for tv. Blair Witch 2 bombed. It just failed.
i just simply can`t believe that people actually eat this marketing.and still talking about it after ten years.the makers of the movide did very good job with it`s marketing.respect for the masters of the mischief marketing.
im glad i stayed up all night and watched a documentry on the history channel about how they set the WHOLE thing up. its still one kick-ass movie though. I HATE old movies but The Blair Witch cept me at the edge of my seat(:

Sorry. But it's time you knew the truth.
the story of blair witch was not made up? the legend, although just a legend, does exist. and so did Rustin Parr.
i didn't hate it when i saw it in 1999 but it's taken me until watching it recently to realise that it was actually a really really good movie, worthy of its cult status. i used to be annoyed that they lied and said it was true, because seeing it with that state of mind was horrifying. so it worked. great movie. :)
oh helllll fuckin no, u mean to tell me after all these years, this shit wasnt true?u gotta be kidding me that jus fucked up everything i think about true scary movie smh they coulda told somebody, thay never said itk was fake on tha damn dvd cover
I own the DVD and have listened to that commentary numerous times. looks like you should also
No script, camera control, lighting was awful, acting

wasn't that the point? if you're trying to sell a movie as a documentary based on "found" footage of some kids in the woods, why would you have good production values? it would ruin the effect.
Talk show without P.C. forcing? No political bashing? Wow.
