Maynard had a helluva stretch between APC and Tool in the early 2000s. Between them both we got Mer de Noms, Lateralus, and Thirteenth Step all in the span of three years or so. Some of the best work of his career in a relatively short time frame. Outstanding.

‘Gravity’ by APC was big in my musical journey. It is not going to break much ground but it’s such a gorgeous song to hear and in my opinion, one of their best. Up there with Orestes and 3 Libras
My personal fav. APC off this album my god i've belted out the lyrics to it live with tears rolling down my face a few times.. Never miss any Maynard live show
Awesome to see someone suggest a newer song. I wasn't that into Eat the Elephant at first but lately I have been listening and liking it more than I imagined I ever would. It is really good, even though I wasn't quite getting it at first, I always understood that it'd difficult for a band to live up to the personal expectations we fans have and set for them after they set such a high bar with previous albums like the first 2 especially. When I listen to ETE now I hear it as refreshing, like why would I want them to try to "top" or even "match" what they did in the past? ETE is great for different reasons, for me at least, than the first 2 APC albums.
@@BillCoz a band like that is never going to do the same album twice. Each one has to be viewed on its own merits/flaws. Is it my favorite? Probably not. But its still really good. And as you said the first two were some of the greatest albums ever to me.
@@Atom-E.B.E. Listen again, then again and again. Then reevaluate and see if you still feel the same way. You might, but I've learned with tool, a perfect circle, puscifer, all Maynard stuff, sometimes it sounds simple and uninspired, but if you listen a bunch of times they song start to grow on you, then you start seeing true genius in the music. Puscifer's new album was like that for me, I had to listen to it like 100 times, and the newest tool record was pretty much like that too. I did like that when it came out but didn't consider it up there with lateralus or aenima, now I consider it possibly as good as either of those. Now, Maynard was in a lot better shape when he was younger, he is like 55 or 56 years old, and I think he does great for that age. Have your own opinion, that's cool, I'm not one of those crazy tool fans who wants it everybody to like tool and gets pissed if they don't. Have a good one man.

Orestes (Oh-res-tees) is from Greek myth, son of Agamemnon. He killed his mother and her lover after Agamemnon came back from the Trojan War and was murdered by the two lovers. I always described the opening of this song as 'flying underwater with the sun on your wings.' The live version of this from Stone and Echo is equally incredible, maybe more so.
The Stone and Echo version absolutely surpasses the studio version for me. Orestes lends itself very well to vastness and Red Rocks gave it some much needed room to breathe.
I work at a psych hospital. I had really been jamming to this song, and thought it was beautiful. So, I was talking to a patient around my same age, and who liked similar music to me. I told him he should check this song out because it was really awesome. Anyway, the patient had been in various psychiatric hospitals for about 20 years, when he was in his late teens he developed schizophrenia. During an episode before he was medicated he killed his mother and father. Only later did I find out what the lyrics to this song was about.
Morning Geebz! Beautiful track to start your day with! Orestes is my fav song from the album Mer de Noms. Why? Because of the vibe/atmosphere, the vocal lines and the flowing rhythm...and the break is CHICKENSKIN! 🤘

Fun story about this album. When I was 16, (I am 36 now) I got my first car. I got a gift certificate to Radio City to get a cd player and good speakers. I waited 6 hours in the lounge just waiting with baited breath. When my car was ready, this was the first album I put in. I cranked it all 45 minutes home. I remember that day so well. Every time I hear a song from this album, I’m brought back to that day at Radio City in the lounge and driving home on route 4. Ah, to be young again.
When this first came out, it was during one of my first pretty severe depressive cycle. I used "one more medicated peaceful moment" as a preface to my poetry book required by my college creative writing class. To this day, this has SUCH a huge impact on my life. I listen to it whenever I'm either about to or am cycling. It gives me the strength to keep going on instead of hurting myself or someone else. A huge part of my musical soundtrack of life.
I was introduced to Tool in my early 20's. (that was a very long time ago..lol) I absolutely loved the group. Had no idea he had been singing with a different band. Was quietly watching the channel for some time now, thought to drop a comment and show my appreciation. Happy you did this awesome song. Warm greetings from south germany.
A song from A Perfect Circle's "The Thirteenth Step" could be an interesting dive for the APC decomposition, my favorite track off that one is The Package. Great bass tones, fun spaced out drum rhythms and James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins on guitar doing some beautiful clean electric work. Very vulnerable tones in Maynard's singing.
He opened their 2018 concert here with The Package and I wanted to cry. All time fav APC song and his vocals are even more stunning live, but it’s the drums in the song that get me every dang time. P.S. I’m still here!
just listen to a whole bunch of good bands at red rocks, that place with its acoustics that are some of the best in the world and it always brings the best live performances
haunting, beautiful, and an odd peacefulness. I've heard this song countless times and it still gives me chills every time, especially with headphones or if you just focus on the song it will just envelope you and sweep you away for a moment. that's music is all about and supposed to do. Maynard you slayed it...thank you for your artistry.
This song has been a part of the soundtrack of my life for over 20 years now, and sitting here listening along with you, I put on my Geebz ears. I had never noticed the guitar shifting left to right, but picked up on it right away and knew it was something you would bring up on your first listen. Thanks for giving me a new way to appreciate music, I have picked up on a few other things in different songs now that I am paying more attention to the production.
Don’t remember when or where I read this... but makes a lot of sense. Judith- Maynard’s anger about Judith being ill and still loving her religion, Orestes- Maynard’s anger/sadness about taking his mother off life support “this umbilical residue keeping me from killing you” and Three Libras- about some family members who didn’t care about Judith/Maynard until after she died and his distain over their behavior. Thanks for this one Geebz. One of my favs!! Always “still here”!!!
Mer de Noms was out in 2000, she died in 2003...so he wasn't writing about her death (that's what 10,000 days is for), but definitely right on with Judith along with her congregation being 2-faced.
I'm still here! I'm iffy when it comes to other artists but I watch every one of your 'Maynard journey' videos to the very end. Someone here mentioned APC's Disillusioned, which is a great song indeed. I'm still holding out hope for Puscifer's Bread and Circus or The Underwhelming. Thanks for another great vid!
I am one of these people who are rarely ever proud of anything they do, but I am proud that I went and bought this album from my own money that I had put aside for this purpose when it came out and I was 14 (!) at that time. It's like "I'm not proud of much, but I'm proud of my great taste in music" :D
When this song comes out of the middle section with those 3 big chords and the vocal harmonies open out - my friends and I have a term for the reaction we get every time: The Orestes Shiver. Probably my favourite APC song.
Thanks for what you do my friend. For the people who are loners, you give us company; while listening to our favorite songs, we are not entirely alone. Thank you geebz
This is my favorite APC song. Maynard can sound like an angel or a beast and I love him for that. No matter what, he always understands the assignment.
Mer de Noms came out around the time I had a really bad breakup. I spent many nights belting out these songs in my car just driving. Thank you for doing these reactions. Maynard's voice puts shape to my own emotional states like no other artist and your breakdowns really have helped me appreciate his artistry even more. I'm grateful.
For a completely different APC song, you should do “So Long and Thanks for All the Fish”. So upbeat, but a very ominous message. And staying with the Maynard theme, “Humbling River” by Puscifer is incredible. Love the channel! Aloha!!
I automatically like the video before hitting play. And had to rush to comment too. Thank you once again for doing APC. I honestly don't mind what sing comes next. I love them that much. I'm sure anything people recommend will do fine and eventually you'll do the ones I enjoy the most (hopefully). So thank you! I love your channel. Always a smile even today after i was feeling down and this lockdown situation in London isn't getting easier. Bored as hell.
The sound an lirycs are so haunting indeed. The lirycs are so raw. 16 years after listening to this song did it finally took on a truly beautiful healing meaning for me after my mother passed away. You never want to feel that pain. And all you can do is hold their hand and hope the morphine eased her pains and fears to the last heart beat. Once you been there you can drown in sorrow or feel a relief knowing her journey through was completed and you could be there the only way you could ever be. The "umbilical residue keeping me from killing you" went from a viceral image when taken literal. But as real and raw as words can describe that feeling of letting go.
I saw them in concert with NIN on The Fragile tour when only Judith had been released on the radio. I left the show with this being my favorite APC song after never hearing it before. The build is just fantastic. Great vid as always!
There are just so many APC songs that are brilliant, where to start Here are a few: - hollow - Orestes - Judith - vanishing - Blue - Weak and powerless - Noose - Brenda - Outsider - Pet - Lullaby - Gravity - Imagine (cover) - Disillusioned - By and down the river - Doomed - Talk Talk Special mention: Bring me the disco king (cover)
This is one of my favourite APC songs, Maynard's voice is just beautiful - love I particularly love the final 'slip away and sever thi-i-i-i-s...''. I saw them live in Manchester when Thirteenth Step was released and it was strangely the most chilled gig I've ever been to. We sat up in the balconies and I remained seated throughout just soaking up the experience while the mosh pit was banging below lol
Good choice my man. Favorite song off that album. 😁😍 It's great seeing you put together the thoughs I have had for years, but couldn't put into words. Thank you.

Because I see you go "wow, that was a neat little trick right there" and I think, "yes, you're spot on, that *was a neat trick! You noticed!" Or I see your eyes widen, and I go, yeah me too! And when you start talking about arrangements and theory and musical psychology, I'm right there going, "Oh my God, he gets it, this is so flipping cool"... because I've always felt so incredibly alone. Itty-bitty music nerd, not even five rulers tall, "hulking out" over how powerful some song is while my friend stares back at me after I play it for them: me all big cow eyes, soul laid out on the cliffhanger of Will I Be Recognized This Time... and them, perfectly innocent of any and all actual crimes, looking at me with nothing but Good Intentions and saying, "that was good" or worse, "it was ok..." ... why not just pull out a spoon, and cut my heart out... But you? You get it. Thank you. Aloha. Ohana.
Tool- Invincible or Jambi or Vicarious Opeth- Black Rose Immortal or To Bid You Farewell (Progressive death metal) Dream Theater- A Change of Seasons or The Count of Tuscany (Prog) Death- Crystal Mountain or 1,000 Eyes (Death metal) Metallica- To Live is To Die (Thrash/Prog) Blind Guardian- And Then There Was Silence (Power metal) Rush- 2112 (Classic rock/Prog)

"The Package" by A Perfect Circle is such an underrated song.

Great bass tones, fun spaced out drum rhythms and James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins on guitar doing some beautiful clean electric work. Very vulnerable tones in Maynard's singing.
The Package is a great choice!
He opened their 2018 concert here with The Package and I wanted to cry. All time fav APC song and his vocals are even more stunning live, but it’s the drums in the song that get me every dang time.
P.S. I’m still here!

You should check out the Live at Red Rocks (Stone and Echo) version of this song. Its amazing.
just listen to a whole bunch of good bands at red rocks, that place with its acoustics that are some of the best in the world and it always brings the best live performances
I'm still here.
This album is fricking sensational. Thanks for breaking down my favourite tracks!
The live version of this at Red Rock is amazing too! Great review mate!
Another great choice Geebz. Thanks for this one 🙌 Breña, off the same album, is really beautiful too ;)
haunting, beautiful, and an odd peacefulness. I've heard this song countless times and it still gives me chills every time, especially with headphones or if you just focus on the song it will just envelope you and sweep you away for a moment. that's music is all about and supposed to do. Maynard you slayed it...thank you for your artistry.
Red Rocks live is life changing. I think it's my favorite live ever.
Nice can’t wait to watch this! Please dinDescending by Tool soon man! I can’t wait for you to hear the GONGGGGG!!!!!!
I’ve been waiting
@@stacyscott7457 same!
Liked before I even watched. This is my favorite APC song and I know that if anyone can do it justice (break it down) it’s you! Much love!
I'M STILL HERE. APC cover of WHEN THE LEVEE BREAKS.
yeah that's one of my fave APC, so chill and so good. Strange cover but it's its own song and it really works
Tool fan here - APC and especially this album has absolutely epic harmonies and layered vox! Some of the best I've ever been blessed to listen to
"You suck as a singer. You shall compose." Epic.
Read this as he was saying it lol 😆
I am one of these people who are rarely ever proud of anything they do, but I am proud that I went and bought this album from my own money that I had put aside for this purpose when it came out and I was 14 (!) at that time.
It's like "I'm not proud of much, but I'm proud of my great taste in music" :D
Yes! One of my favorite APC songs ever. In terms of softer songs that APC has, my favorite!
Maynard could sing the phonebook and it would sound great. Simply a amazing vocalist. And his songwriting ability is pretty dam good as well!
“You suck as a singer, you shall compose”
Well I didn’t know I was going to be attacked this morning 😂
This is my favorite APC song. Maynard can sound like an angel or a beast and I love him for that. No matter what, he always understands the assignment.
I'm still here! So glad you did this one, it's a favorite of mine and it was great to see you react and respond to it!
Never clicked on a video so fast before - my favorite APC song and my favorite decomposer! Awwright! Will you check out their song "The Noose" please
Aloha!!
I'm still watching!
Pet, Breña, The Noose, Eat the Elephant. Any of those songs would be great!
Pet is one of my favs!
Great Song! It's been over 2 weeks since you've done a proper Tool song. PLEASE give is more Tool soon. I'm still waiting for Descending 🤙
Oh I'm so happy you reacted to this track! One of my favorites of all time from APC.
This song to this day brings me to tears
Your reactions are BY FAR AND AWAY the best I have had the pleasure of viewing.
There are just so many APC songs that are brilliant, where to start
Here are a few:
- hollow
- Orestes
- Judith
- vanishing
- Blue
- Weak and powerless
- Noose
- Brenda
- Outsider
- Pet
- Lullaby
- Gravity
- Imagine (cover)
- Disillusioned
- By and down the river
- Doomed
- Talk Talk
Special mention: Bring me the disco king (cover)
This is one of my favourite APC songs, Maynard's voice is just beautiful - love I particularly love the final 'slip away and sever thi-i-i-i-s...''. I saw them live in Manchester when Thirteenth Step was released and it was strangely the most chilled gig I've ever been to. We sat up in the balconies and I remained seated throughout just soaking up the experience while the mosh pit was banging below lol
I'm still here! Here for all of it, man! I just can't get enough of your perspectives and insights into my favorite tunes!
The way Maynard's voice makes your heart bend... unreal. This was a highlight in high school.
Good choice my man. Favorite song off that album. 😁😍
It's great seeing you put together the thoughs I have had for years, but couldn't put into words. Thank you.
This was my favorite music experience. When this thing came out I listened to it every track over and over for months.
I'm still here brother!!! Love hanging out with ya man. Do as many videos as you like, sometimes I watch only one , some days I get to watch 4 or 5 of your videos. That's the beauty of this platform once you've uploaded we the viewer can watch anytime or come back to videos we may have missed. 🤘🏼
Thank you finally! Love this song! Please do BRENA from the same album.....
You're awesome man, loving your vids and insights to things most of us probably missed.
--- I think what I enjoy most about watching your videos, is genuinely your reactions.
Itty-bitty music nerd, not even five rulers tall, "hulking out" over how powerful some song is while my friend stares back at me after I play it for them: me all big cow eyes, soul laid out on the cliffhanger of Will I Be Recognized This Time... and them, perfectly innocent of any and all actual crimes, looking at me with nothing but Good Intentions and saying, "that was good" or worse, "it was ok..."
... why not just pull out a spoon, and cut my heart out...
But you? You get it. Thank you.
Aloha. Ohana.
Tool- Invincible or Jambi or Vicarious
Opeth- Black Rose Immortal or To Bid You Farewell (Progressive death metal)
Dream Theater- A Change of Seasons or The Count of Tuscany (Prog)
Death- Crystal Mountain or 1,000 Eyes (Death metal)
Metallica- To Live is To Die (Thrash/Prog)
Blind Guardian- And Then There Was Silence (Power metal)
Rush- 2112 (Classic rock/Prog)
Happy easter! I just came home from a visit to my family, and I saw this notification a few days ago. The second I got home, I turned on my pc, and I was like "I gotta hear this."
I hope one day we get to Magdalena too. It's my favorite song from that album.
