I remember the absolute disbelief I had when I was reading the manga and reached this point. What an utterly amazing reveal this was. Kishimoto has his flaws, but he did the buildup to this masterfully.
Anyone who's on contract to write and draw a chapter every week for over 15 years isn't going to do well by the end of it.

Everyone and I mean everyone original theory about the masked man being o**** was correct until he came out and called himself Madara and that’s when everyone become confused. Also there was no weird interaction between him and kakashi and there certainly weren’t any indications of when he fought minato. So yeah the moment I heard the voice from the casket I knew it was madara but most people had really believed the masked man was him

Simone RZ This episode is less about the man behind the mask than about the man in the casket Kabuto showed off to Tobi, both of which are, of course, connected and were highly discussed back in the day. Speculation was intense at the time, even on the German forum I was on; it must have been quite a bit worse on bigger sites. The signs you registered were noticed by many people, but the theory wasn't exactly universally popular. It seemed like a stretch, made little sense. "Why?" and "How?" had to be answered. I personally was really against that idea. On top of that, Tobi and Madara were treated as the same person even in the databooks, which not everyone realized as flawed and only accurate based on what had actually been confirmed in the manga itself.

And during the fight against Minato Minato said at least once that he is surprised the enemy knows so much about his Flying Thunder God Technique.
So yeah, there are indications but I honestly hated that theory of him being who he end up being. Because it made no sense and even now it is basically unexplained.

Since you brought it up yourself I figure there's no harm in clarifying it. Yes, the mystery person in the casket that Kabuto showed off to provoke a reaction from Tobi was this Madara you see now. Also interestingly, this Madara mentioned Nagato when he stepped out and the rebirth jutsu that Nagato used to restore the dead villagers of Konoha.

From the raman guy, sasukes dad, sasuke from the future, madaras little brother, naruto from the future, someone from an alternate reality, tobi and madara being split from the same being similar to piccolo and kami were. God curtis, so many endless theries were had back then.
