Very good video, much needed. There are way too much restrictions and circles people place themselves in for such a versatile training tool.
I started doing kettlebells with the "Hardstyle" way for quite awhile, eventually having done the cert camps and all that. I have also just dived into training with a GS coach just to do one competition to see how it is like (That was years ago as well). I have also trained with wrestlers and other martial artist that tries to figure out more unorthodox ways and standards to train with the kettlebell. Eventually I just did whatever I felt was the right form for my body, or like you say the goal for the training.
I think Mike Mahler also said things like if you were gonna do more reps with a weight versus hitting an absolute max of course your form is going to be different. My form in snatching a 56kg kettlebell for 1-3 reps is way more up right, way more upper back. Whereas if I were to go for a 10 min set with a 24kg the form is a lot more "GS curve" like, I would not be able to last that long with the form I use for a much heavier kettlebell.
Also if I am not going for reps but to probably develop more static strength, doing a slower negative would probably be useful, instead of like a "GS-ish" absorption drop.
I looked at a lot of the Russian vids of the super strong guys training, they all seem to use different form when they are using different weights or reps.
Tools and techniques for different purposes!!

Joe, I usually won't watch videos with only monologue and no action. However, I believe you had some great points. I've been challenged and liked both styles, but I also experiment more due to burnout. Presses and overhead carries are way different than a balanced dumbbell. Good vid!

I always did hard style (did not even know its called that until a month ago from one of ur comments)..i think it helps me in my everday life, but recently i started pkaying with the sporty style. Looking for a school to learn the proper way. I agree with you, hard style is good for power and strength but kb sport can teach how to handle the same weight more efficiently, therefore i really feel both styles need to be done for best results.

I’m interested in becoming RKC certified in the near future so for the 5 min/ 100 rep snatch test it’s more feasible for me to use the hard style swing although I’m more comfortable with the sport style. The hard style swing just feels awkward to me. I can appreciate the nuanced differences between the hard and sport styles so I train in both. I can definitely feel the power transfer with hard style and increased energy expenditure. Sport style is more finessed but equally as effective. Both styles are two different sides of the same coin. Becoming proficient at both will make me a more well rounded athlete.
I appreciate your hard work Joe. Thank you.

Excellent channel, I like training in different styles too. Since I've been swinging 48kg in hard style, my 24kg snatches have improved a lot. But at the moment my 24kg snatches are more of a hard style because it still feels slightly heavy. My 16kg snatches are coming on as well but my left hand callouses let me down. Is there a hand assistance exercise for kettlebell snatch so the kettlebell moves in the hand the way it should?

  • @joenelson3375

Lol i just try to stay doing them, im happy to swing, snatch or clean anyway my lazy butt gets it done.
I have been doing 100 two handed swings a day, aside from other lifts and my general strength has shot up. So just getting them done is important and my favorite part about kettlebells is the main movements are relatively easy to perform compared to work being done by body. Next up is Bulgarian bag for me. The spins and snatches look next level for core and looks easier to perform. By that in general i mean able to stand in one position and gain maximal caloric burn and strength.

I train both styles. Hard style helps sport style and sport style helps hard style. Sport style ( 10 minute sets) also makes you mentally strong.

Subscribed and loving the vids. In order to make things simple with 1 clear goal I was thinking to stick with Enter the Kettlebell, 200 snatches with a 24kg and press half my body weight. What do you think of ETK as a program?

    • @kettlebellmusclegain

I dont see why not, they do move differently though. Not much but noticeable. For example you can definitely move faster with the smaller diameter hardstyle Bells that mean said though I am not a hardstyle instructor and I don't know if you need to use them to pass any certification if that is something you're working towards

Short version: if you want to compete, do sport style. If want ANYTHING else, including nearly every fitness goal possible, then choose hard style. Sport style is very over-rated and very specific in the results it produces. Those results are 100% aimed at competition and the attributes of that style don't translate well to what most people want -- fitness.
