Thank you for having one of what seems to be the only videos on youtube clearly differentiating and explaining the two styles!
Sport looks like a dance, hard style looks like a fight
Hard style = sprint, hardcore endocrine response, taxing the phosphocreatine system and brushing the glycolitic system.
Sport style = durability, slightly less hardcore endocrine response, balance, coordination, taxing the glycolitic system and brushing the anaerobic system.
Both have their places. Both have pros and cons. Its the 100m dash vs the 1 mile.
Hardstyle for life.
Been watching lots of Kettlebell technique videos and this is the first I've seen to show the Sport style. Looks worth a try.
look up girevoy sport
Personally, I compete and coach kettlebell sport but it's not an "either or" situation. It's true that if you want to compete in kettlebell sport, then that most of what you will do will be sport specific. If you want to achieve a certificate in hardstyle training, then yes, you need to train in that modality. BUT it doesn't mean it's for life!! You can train and compete in kettlebell sport and add hardstyle conditioning for extra general fitness and vice versa! People like to think in black and white terms like "it's them or us, this or that" and it's not the case.
Each modality is different, has different goals. Both styles compliment each other in a way because they are the opposite of each other but have the same roots. Both have pros and cons. Just lift and enjoy your training!
sibei steady i like your talk....
What a great video on the difference between hardstyle and sport! Thanks for making this!
You are all winners in my book! Thanks for the video.
as a grappler i use both for different reasons.
I do mix kettlebells Calesthenics and powerlifts as my s&c programming beside fight practice. works fine
Well said and agree
Best way to do it. Mix it up.. Eg. Sport style double clear n press
Hard style Swings
The answer is, "IT DEPENDS"! I see the benefit of both methods and how personal fitness goals would affect which would be more beneficial. I have to admit that Brittany looks amazing! I heard her on your podcast a while back. Keep up the great content. 🤓
Isaias Castrejon thanks Isaias! Glad you are enjoying the content. :)
So which is for what?
@@KnightlySirJames1 hardstyle seems to be more for strength and the other version for endurance
You guys still training with KB’s?:)
I find doing both styles for certain exercises is really beneficial
Great video!
Excellent demonstration!!! I use both types of swings: hardstyle and kettlebell sport for the most well rounded training program possible. Power & strength / high intensity - hardstyle, and speed / efficiency & heavier weight - kettlebell sport. Both types of bells are must have training implements!
Hi, I did hardstyle swings for a 4-5 months completing 40,000 reps in total. That fatigued my knee completely and my knee would click while climbing stairs. However now after taking a couple of years of break, I am back to it with more of a endurance style swing demonstrated by Brittany.. you can see the huge difference of the swings on the knee here. So choose wisely..
Farjana B Rowther i dont think that the hardstyle is bad for your knees... it will be more your techniek. ...
I also used to swing barefoot and I tend to super over-pronate. However now I have adopted a more of endurance style swinging with motion control shoes. So far no problems. I love and prefer the hard style swings though.
Farjana B Rowther swings and all kettlebell exercises are best with bare feet
yup
AdvenTure DaD, i must have very effective technic because I don’t get any pain using kettlebell. I just put my kettlebell next to my flower base and rub while admiring it, i don’t use for swinging so the kettlebell is safe and so do I.
Love this! Kb's are my favorite!
Only just learned about KB sport swing yesterday, cool to see side by side
I like doing both. Hard style for power and sports for endurance. The sports style is also a nice way to measure progress.
Good video. I was wondering why my back fatigues when I increase reps.
Warren Davis hi Warren! Could be the timing of your swing is a bit off, causing the back to be loaded more than the legs. The more reps you do or the heavier weight you lift, the more you will notice little nuances in technique. Make sure you are hinging at the right time and allowing the hips to lead the movement, not the arm. Good luck!
Both are best. No reason not to learn them both. Two different styles for two different goals.
When I see hardstyle I think of the music lol
Great informative video as always.
I prefer hardstyle at 58 yrs. But can understand why KB enthusiasts migrate to sport for the challenge.
Great video by the way!!👌🔥👍🔥💪
Asking which style is better hard style or sports style is the same as asking who is smarter civil engineer or chemical engineer!!!????
It is an illogical question!! Both have different characteristics and both are extremely beneficial!!!!
The swing which uses the most muscle groups to perform it is best for the average person. The more muscle involved the more efficient and functional the workout.
However; I use both swing styles to target my posterior chain in one set then up my workout efficiency and functionality of strength with the other.
So which swing uses more muscles?
@@rachaelisobelclaeys6980 I found a swing type called the American Swing. In the video they do the Russian Swing.
American Swing allows the weight to go overhead. Be aware there are several things about the American Swing you must pay attention to:
1. It's an advanced exercise.
2. The weight goes overhead so be aware of your grip and do not let your elbow bend. Both could cause contact between Kettlebell and your head.
3. The momentum at the top could cause you to lose balance backward.
4. Your shoulders need to be held properly and in good enough shape or you could suffer injury.
Ramping up to the American Swing do the Sport Kettlebell Russian Swing and Kettlebell Snatches to be in shape for it.
Thank you so much for the detailed info. I'm adding this to my goals! Appreciated!
@@rachaelisobelclaeys6980 If you want a lot of great Kettlebell workouts get the RKC Book of Strength Training. It's inexpensive as an e-book, downloads instantly, and is available through dragondoor.com.
@@paulweiss2203 I really appreciate that too. Looking it up right now!!!
Very nice analysis And Demos!
I've always done the 'hard-style' as at the time of starting, that was the only option available. I always thought you were meant to get it to around chest height, with straight arms? It's a lot more taxing that way. Great exercise in any variation.
The hardstyle swing shown here is referred to as the “gunslinger swing” where you keep your elbows closer to your body and have a bend to your elbows during the upswing, this type of swing is great for learning to clean the kettlebell, but of itself as a regular swing works great too
As far as how high the kettlebell should go on the upswing: The idea is to always allow the force applied by the hips to dictate how high the kettlebell goes. For a beginners this might be about waist height for someone more experienced it’ll be about shoulder width or a little lower. But it all depends really.
Will the sport style be easier for the lower back? When I do the regular way my back hurts the next day
Yes. Way more injuries with hard style. I have the same back issues as you. Steve Maxwell, who was ranked with hardstyle absolutely trashes it now because of injuries
It depends on what your goals are, if you wanna be a kettlebell sport lifter then go with the sportstyle... if you wanna be better in boxing or any other fightsport or something to improve your overall power then go for the hardstyle.... if building muscle is your goal. Take hardstyle.... endurance.... take sportstyle.... i did sportstyle and i liked it... but i prefer hardstyle....
What's with the bent arms on that hard style swing?
catawampus is upset ıf you bent your arms on that hatd style it means you use your hips more..but ıf you make your arms straight that show you use some of your shoulder muscles..
bayburtlu gada you are supposed to use your hips. Then engage your lats to slow it down and push it back thru your legs
My KB work has gotten a little more "sporty" lately. I hyperextended my knee doing hard style cleans about a month ago and the sport style feels a little better. I worry more about the knees going into lockout that quickly with the hard style now. My swings are usually more hard style but cleans and snatch are not.
Snatch and jerk are two main kettlebell exercises. So the swing that helps you to prepare for snatch is better. Besides sport-style looks prettier.
I noticed she has a double knee bend throughout her reps, and his single knee bend was very minimal.
Use them both !!
Soft style can be performed with arms bent a little more, all styles are effective, just pick what suits you and your goals, it's a tool, you choose how to work with it 👍
If you're a martial artist, soldier, or just wanting to stay fit at home: hardstyle. If you are into CrossFit or doing competitive kettlebell events: Kettlebell Sport
I like both. But I dislike the crossfit swing aka the American Kettlebell Swing (I'm not unpatriotic) I feel its just a waste of energy. But thats just my opinion. Im still new to kettlebells started October of 2019.
only thing sport kettle bell does not have a 2 handed swing, one handed snatch, one handed press, pressing 2 kettle in one hand each....2 handed swing is a kettle bell fitness movement, watch some kettle bell sport contest, you will never see it
I thought that too. Kettlebell ’Sport’ does not have a two-hand swing. I’ve only seen one-hand swings, clean, clean and press, clean and jerk, and snatch. Double bell cleans and jerks (one each hand). At least in competition.
@@IllustratedManOfficial Actually that is not true. There is specifically a variation of 2-Hand Snatch (протяжка) taught by Russian sport athletes, particularly the St. Petersberg school (ketacademy), which is where Dennis Vasilev, Sergei Mishin and many other great girevoy sport athletes came from.
1 handed KB snatch is done at every KB competition....
Just my honest and unprofessional opinion: for swings, hardstyle is superior. For snatches and clean and jerks, sport style is better.
Wow. Crown to coccyx alignment. Very rare to see on RUclips.
Seems like the difference between weightlifting and CrossFit
"It depends"? Really? If your goal is to compete in Girevoy Sport (99.9% of people won't even know what that is) then the sport swing is for you. If you're doing kettlebells for ANY normal fitness result like fat loss, muscle gain, strength training, etc. then the hard style swing is the only way to go. Not telling people this is wrong. The sports swing doesn't extend the hips or knees meaning you never develop the glutes or quads properly. Basically for 99.9% of people the sports swing is a complete waste of time.
If all you want is to feel more tired when using a light kettlebell, then hardstyle is great. Afterward you can grab a smoothie and granola. If you actually want to get stronger, improve athletic performance, and be able to use a heavier bell or do more reps, then learn from top competitors.
99.9% of people never heard of the sport, because they are ignorant. The vast majority of people, when they get introduced to kettlebells, get hard style crammed down their throats as if it were the only way to do it.
jlushefski encore
Kettlebell Quest exactly!
So basically what you’re saying is... that it depends.
I naturally gravitated to hard style when I started doing these a few days ago. Guess I'm hard as FUCK
I love kettlebells.
Vincent Lee me too!
Do both!! Cycle back and forth.
Nice 💪
Its not about BETTER. DO BOTH ..why limit you! Blend ..
damn right
so how much weight does a person 5'9 ft tall, 155 lb use for both styles , hard and sport style?
Completely depends on how long you've been training. Most of the time it's less weight than you think you could do.
If you’re lean and conditioned, a 16kg and a 24kg. If you’re overweight and unconditioned, a 12kg and a 20kg.
Hard style produces more power by far. It's more ballistic. I'm not sure you can get that benefit from a sport style swing. But I don't see anything in the sport style that you're not getting from doing hard style. Plus sport style just looks hysterical. I laugh every time I see someone doing it. Just reminds me of the dudes in the gym who do bicep curls with lots of body movement.
must be a prerequisite to wear short shorts when doing hardstyle swings
Pavel would beat you up and kick you out the gym if he saw you doing that "sports swing"...
No he wouldn't
Team Adam !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sport swing is more about building upward momentum, because you're not training to swing the kettlebell, you're training to clean and snatch the kettlebell.
This is the critical distinction that I was waiting for them to address!
Brittany is amazing
If your kettlebell training for any assistance to sports/martial arts then hard style is way better.
Her swing doesn't look like any kettlebell seeing I've ever seen. Is that supposed to be the "normal" way to do it?
Its the Kettlebell Sport version. Its intended to make the swing as easy as possible for Long Cycle and Snatches because Kettlebell Sport is done for max reps for 5 or 10 minutes, no rest. You cant set the kettlebells down.
It reminds me of CrossFit athletes doing snatches and clean & jerks for high reps or for time. Same movement as you see in weightlifting but totally different approach.
@@Jim-bj5ub except KBs are meant to be done for endurance and the O-lifts are not.
eamonob84 well not quite. Hard style kettlebell work is done for power, like Olympic weightlifting. Maximum power for minimal reps. The anti-glycolytic approach. One hit one kill. Like Pavel says.
The competition kettlebell style reminds me of a CrossFit event where they do 30 snatches with lite weight. Basically taking a power event and turning into an endurance event. It’s still cool. Just a different focus.
No most definitely not the normal way, check this clip out ruclips.net/video/YSxHifyI6s8/видео.html

Sport style is as same as pull up of crossfit..ı mean how crossfit pull up is shit, same as sport style swing is looking shit
Hard style
Hardstyle Swing or Don't bother!!!!!
Vairocana23Revived Your lower back will suffer eventually after high reps of heavy hard style swings.
@@XieTianXieDi888 who told you that lie?
@@XieTianXieDi888 only if your performing the technique incorrectly. I've done both & for me hardstyle is a far more stable movement and less conducive to injury. There are too many moving parts in the sports style which will result in injury from high repetitions for the average personal.
Ríastrad I will agree that GS has more moving parts because it is more technical. It’s focus is on technique, which make the lifts easier to perform. I disagree that it will make you more prone to injury. The hard style vs sport arguement is like arguing about powerlifting vs. Olympic weightlifting.
@@XieTianXieDi888 complexity does not equal efficiency.
Real hard-style swing should be done with straight arms, maintaining tension in biceps and triceps and packaging the shoulders with lats activation.
That's sub-optimal for power production. Pack the shoulders and engage the lats/triceps/biceps with the getup.
@@johnmitchell8487 Hard-style it's about power production, yes. But also about generating whole-body tension.
Watching Lebe Stark and Pavel Tsatsouline this explanation is wrong. It's the opposite way around.
"Hardstyle" is a silly gimmick, like doing 15lb cleans with an aerobic bar. The strong hip extension comes from a heavy bell/resistance, not by trying to consciously or "artificially" add tension/power by doing hardstyle with a child's toy. Practice, use heavier bells, and your technique will improve alongside, which will end up looking like competitors'.
I do high rep hardstyle swings with 90lbs.... is that a child's toy? That is just slightly more than half my bodyweight.
In a Strongfirst hardstyle certification...there is a 24kg ×100reps to be completed in 5minutes for under 100kg individuals....is that not weight enough???
Pavel, the OG of kettlebells, uses hardstyle sooooo youre mistaken. Sport is the gimmick
This is just butchering the technique, hurts my eyes and breaks my KB heart. I understand the idea, but no man, just NO.
Hardstyle is the way. And just on a side note, his technique on the KB swing is also up for a little adjustment.
Lol. Butchering the technique? You still think Pavel and du cane invented this stuff don’t you?
darthinvictus666 No one, said anything about Pavel or du cane. It’s basic training ethics. You train your muscles as optimale as possible to get stronger. Not doing so, is in my opinion a waste of time. Finding loopholes in excercises so you can endure it longer, is one of them. So yeah in my opinion not the proper technique. Trying to re-invent the wheel*
And kettlebell sport is what in your world?
darthinvictus666 Same as CrossFit, but it’s okay. Enjoy your “kbfit” ‘ Ciao
Honestly, it's mindsets like this that are problematic. Obviously each swing has different goals. Therefore it depends on the individual's goals. There is no right or wrong here. Just what fits your goals more.
Kettle sport swing is done with 1 arm. Please consider getting your training from an actual professional and not what you see from youtube.
Actually that is not true. There is specifically a variation of 2-Hand Snatch (протяжка) taught by Russian sport athletes, particularly the St. Petersberg school (ketacademy), which is where Dennis Vasilev, Sergei Mishin and many other great girevoy sport athletes came from.
Of course in person training is best, but Mike and Brittany are both very accomplished kettlebell sport athletes and this is a high quality content video.
Uh, they are both world champions and have the rank of KB master of sport. Don't try to be the RUclips expert here.
@@eamonob84 not a RUclips expert here, just an expert.
@@adamdepmore7657 of course you are. Certainly more of an expert than two world champions. 🙄
Hardstyle Seems way better for building strength,.power and for having a real benefit to the body, the other style seems like it doesn't really provide any benefit whatsoever.
