    4:22 "This is an extremely dangerous area, we make sure everyone is out of the way before pre-flight on ailerons"...... proceeds to pre-flight elevators and aeilerons as someone is walking underneath! (I worked in military safety for many years, so I understand the difference between documented procedure and ground reality!)

      He did not walk underneath the Stab. The Aileron doesn't go far enough down to have to worry about it. You would have to be nearly 7 ft tall to get hit. Nothing unsafe about it.

    I didnt know the backseater had flight controls. I always assumed they were a non-pilot. This is good to see that if your pilot becomes incapacitated, that punching out and loosing the jet is not your only option

    • @d.porter3142
      @d.porter3142 3 года назад +15

      WSOs aren't pilots. There are controls in the rear seat because the F-15E was developed from the two-seat F-15D which had controls in the rear for training purposes. Obviously WSOs are familiar with how to use the controls and could fly the airplane temporarily if needed, but they are not trained to do so.

      @MinistryOfMagic_DoM Год назад +3

      @CannedCoochie I can confirm the only reason the E model has a backseat is because the D model did. At the time the contract came down to make an air to ground combat aircraft Boeing was putting in a bid for it. The F-15A/B/C had all been, per company motto, "Not a pound for air to ground" but now that the USAF wanted air to ground they wanted to bid. The req didn't actually require a backseat, but it was easier and cheaper with a production line already rolling for the E model to come along if it used the same cockpit set up as the D model.
      I'm not sure if there is a documentary about it, but this story is relatively well known and can be looked up if you'd like to get finer details of it. Fun fact: The F-4 is technically part of Boeing history as well since it was made by McDonnell Douglas which was later absorbed into Boeing. The F-15 was also originally a MD jet, of course. As for the F-15E and all other variants that come after it, the backseat is now realized for its potential so it's here to stay, but it was never part of the original requirement for the contract it was competing for.
