I couldn't begin to imagine any of my knowledge when it comes to canoeing comes close to matching what you guys know but having paddled with my old dog for 11 years and now my new pup who is almost 2 I've learned a couple things. I always have my dog infront of me so I can correct any unwanted behavior and make sure he's not putting the canoe off balance. I also have a rule where he either sits or lays down, easier said then done but having your dog right infront makes it easier. I also use an old therm-o-rest pad for him to lay on. I started using one with my old pooch because he loved to swim and this way with the egg carton texture helped separate the water that accumulates in the bottom of the canoe and him, you can also use it to kneel on too! Hope some of these tips help because once you start paddling with a pup and the more they get used to it, hard to imagine doing any trip without them.
Some really good tips! I always found it useful as well to have a good run or ball/stick session before going in the boat, tires them out a little. lol :) :)
I really appreciate how you make your fire's safe by using rocks & near water. I have seen too many people build a fire directly on top of grass or near dry bushes. Thank you for guarding our precious wilderness & wildlife from fire ❤ btw, your dog is adorable ❤️ 😊
It took my Jack Russell, Joey, a while to get used to sitting on my lap in my kayak. He eventually got the hang of it and we have been inseparable for 13 years and going strong. Trouble is, he’s getting a little too heavy to fit on my lap these days. 😆 so our trips together have been shorter ones. Having a furry travel companion has been the best! Happy paddling everyone ❤️
Once took a trip down to Tim L in Algonquin with my 15 ft bob special and gfs walker and fox hounds . They were ok until we neared a shoreline and they bolted out of the canoe. No way to follow them over the marshy shoreline. Came back shortly when we threatened to leave them. Every dog needs to follow a learning curve. Looked like a great trip in any case .
Ah! He looked pretty intent on jumping out a few times to investigate a few dead heads in the water but thankfully restrained himself. I was thinking we could have a similar situation on our hands. Smart pups figure it out pretty quick, but you're absolutely spot on, there is a learning curve every dog needs to follow.
I had a boxer/beagle mix that would go canoing with me. She would either sit or she'd lay down opposite side of the canoe tilt like she was balance out the canoe. She figured that out all by herself. She was a good dog. 🐕
I love your videos! I'm a paddler from way back, older than dirt. But it is certain that I can continue, vicariously, by watching your videos. Thank you. BTW, when I was growing up, back in the 60s I had a dog that had the same face as your dog in this video. Ha! Love it! Keep doing what you're doing!
My griff just dumped me and brother last week on Donald lake while we were fishing lost two paddles and a tackle box. The is usually pretty good gets excitable sometimes your griff will do better just a little learning curve thanks for the videos
Ah dang!! Boreal put his paw out once, tempting to go after a deadhead in the water, but thankfully restrained himself. He's not ready to join me in the canoe for fishing yet, I could see the very same thing happening. But with time, training and patience, I'm sure he'll settle down. Cheers!
Gus my dog is just two had him out last year as well for a two week trip acts like a cat with a ball on the string if you catch him off guard while fishing jumped in after a big smallie last year only other time fishing was really a problem lots of treats and one of those foam pads forgot the pad this year in the canoe for him seems to help in the canoe bit more stuff to bring but seems make him calmer and uses it to lay around camp helps with bugs a bit to. Love the videos
@@ExploreTheBackcountry He didn't hesitate to jump in the water either. The German pointer is a little more hyper than the griffon. When I was looking at Boreal, he looked like a Griffon but acted like the Wire Haired Pointer. I'm considering a bird dog. I've ruled out the Griffon. I am thinking English Setter or the Wire Haired Pointer. I have some land in New Brunswick on a river so when I take up residence there, I will purchase a dog for ruff grouse and woodcock hunting.
@@ExploreTheBackcountry We use ours all the time when we are base camping it. It really opens up a ton of backcountry cooking options - like baking brownies on it for a nighttime snack or dessert, or fresh muffins for breakfast. It's hard to beat!
The pup sure seemed to enjoy the trip 🙂Sabrina and I are looking to get a puppy in the fall and hopefully be able to train it well enough to join us on some adventures. Thanks for sharing!
He loves the outdoors. When he see's me moving camping equipment around the house he now thinks we're headed off on another adventure. Have fun with the puppy adventures, just be patient!
Nice to see something about the shoals prov. park, I'm interested in going there. And yeah, dogs in a canoe can be tricky. It all hinges on how calm they are.
Great little park. A good assortment of options to paddle. The ChrisMar Adventure map is a good companion for planning a trip here. There's a fee station at the Prarrie Bee Access point. So bring cash for your permit.
Awesome! We need to take our hyper active schnauzer on a canoe trip as well! One thing I'd say, as my personal preference. I love to hear the sounds of nature, water, insects, wind, indistinct conversation, in fact anything anything that is real... even the silence is so much better than the background music. There is nothing wrong with your music choices. But for those wilderness park adventures, for me, the music is more annoying and distracting than pleasurable. ... But! It's just a minor quibble and personal annoyance... I might be in minority. Don't stop making your vids! They are splendid. Subscribed! 😀
Very nice! Boreal is beautiful. I'm Getting ready for my canoe fishing around gowganda next week. Have to leave my dog behind, she's a senior dog and never had her in my canoe. She's my grouse chasing partner. Look forward to your next adventure with Boreal. I understand it's very difficult with a dog, however I really enjoyed watching your time together
Enjoy your fishing adventure. Hopefully they are biting! Always good company with a dog no matter the outcome. I'm hoping he will be ready for some solo trips this fall or next spring. Have a great trip!
Thanks for the video. Did you guys park at the end of Prairie Bee Rd.? I can't find any info whether you can park there while on a trip. Otherwise I guess it's the train in and out.
Congratulations on the new addition, I think it's time for me to get a dog again for trips like this. I was at The Shoals last year but accessed it from Healey and absolutely loved it there and looking at doing again. I've called Ontario Parks with no information and the Park Superintendent but no reply regarding accessing it from Pairie Bee Lake Rd if a fee is required. Any info would greatly be appreciated.
There is a fee station at the Prarrie Bee Lake Access point. Follow the access road from the large Prarrie Bee Ontario Parks sign off 101. Bring cash or cheque and fill out the required forms. It's not staffed, but parks does make random visits from time to time and I did see ticketed vehicles there a few years back when we last paddled it.
I fish this area very often, have you recently been down to little wawa lake via creek under the highway? I’m wonder how accessible it is haven’t been in a few years! Cheers great videos!
Been a while since we've done that. Possible with effort. ruclips.net/video/V2331ZdKXas/видео.html The Shoals is a gorgeous park! We'll probably be back in the future for some more paddling
@@ExploreTheBackcountry yes definitely a beautiful place that really feels way out there.. and endless fishing opportunities for many trophy fish! Hope to see you on the water! Cheers 🍻
I love the full shaggy and trash stash look you have going on you totally match your dog for this one but it matches the laid-back chill vibe of this video ,😂🛶😘
It's said that owners sometimes start to look like their pets. Still trying to decide who has the better stache.
That's an insult to Boreal.
Ha! Our family and friends have remarked on this resemblance for a while.
I was gonna comment on the same.. Brad your newest vid with Xander @-32 your Stache was frozen.. looked just like Boreal. Lol
Is that Gordon Lightfoot I'm looking at? It's a resounding yes to the stache and bass pro hat. Great vid

Ohhh the joys of canoe tripping with dogs! Well done guys.
Great vibes in this video my man! I enjoyed it almost as much as that lip caterpillar of yours ;)
Ahaha!! Thanks dude. Caterpillar marches on
KC has a helpful video for dog canoers. Lay down is key. Also, getting them to exit the canoe WHEN you want them to.. Good times ahead Mafia boss!
Boreal looks insanely like Gaïa, my Italian Griffon! Same colors, same face! They love the woods so much, almost has to be daily for us!
BTW, I really appreciate your video canoeing through Big Bend. I'm a westerner now and I'm glad you did that trip and documented it !

Easy peasy I never go canoe camping without at least one if not two dogs! The most I've taken is four, solo BWCAW five night trip.
Wow, that's awesome! Bet they loved the trip just as much as you. How big of a canoe did you take?
@@ExploreTheBackcountry it was a 16'. Had two dogs up front one in the middle and the trouble maker in between my legs ❤️
Sweet stache! Looks like a great time
A Griffon - nice looking dog, they are very good bird dogs. I see that he has a good nose too.
Wire Haired Pointer. Very similar to a Griffion. That nose is constantly sniffing out new interesting things!

Backcountry pizza on the reflector oven ftw!

With the shoals provincial park being non operational, were you able to park somewhere?
No personal space while eating gosh hahaha
Easy way , when the dog is flipping around toss him overboard and make him swim for it.. he will instantly learn his place in the canoe.
