  • It's been a slow week. I've been thinking about the 7th generation of gaming. Is it overrated OR underrated?

    Thanks for the shout out, brotha! 🤟🏽🤟🏽 Good times!
    I’m glad I got some of the 360 titles I wanted in the last couple of years. Ain’t nobody got time to spend the asking price now. 😂

    I'd argue the 7th generation is the greatest generation of gaming. It is the last generation of gaming where the games were entirely on disk, were "modern" and still had developers taking risks.

    • @nightmarishendeavors
      @nightmarishendeavors 2 месяца назад

      To be clear - I am not including DLC. DLC won't stand the test of time. 7th Gen games certainly have DLC which will not always be available and sometimes it dependent on the servers being up still. I am strictly talking about the full game being on the disk and being playable.

    • @CMRetroGaming
      @CMRetroGaming  2 месяца назад +1

      @@nightmarishendeavors Thank you for the counter point. It is the last generation that has the game on the discs. I also appreciated that companies were still willing to take risks. Now a day's your God of war, Tomb Raider's etc. all sort of play and feel the same.

    I think 7th gen also suffered heavily from a huge number of the games also being on PC, often much cheaper and with the PC versions sometimes still being supported while the console versions are long abandoned by the developers.

      Yeah. For sure. I just think people, like resellers, are going to see these prices rise and they are going to buy some of these games that are basically unusable.

    7th generation in like 5 years will be as loved as the 6th generation because those ppl from that generation are growing up and feel nostalgic. Good thing I bought them when nobody cared about those games. I dont think its overrated its more of a generational thing. My personal take is ps2 and ps4 are the best play station consoles.

    Damn, Raiden Fighters Aces went up to $150 that quick. Not that long ago it was only worth $30. I'm glad I found my copy early cause I'm not spending $150 on a single game. RUclips definitely pushed that number up cause a few months ago it wasn't worth that much

    • @CMRetroGaming
      @CMRetroGaming  2 месяца назад

      Yeah, for whatever reason 360 games are red hot. AND YOU KNOW how this is going to go....all the "Johnny come lately' s" are going to panic buy, which is going to cause the prices to go up.

  • @type4647

    7 Gen consoles started bad trends that persist today and is without a doubt the worst generation of consoles. And, it's not even close. The lack of PS3 games vs the great volume of varied ps2 games, the creation of AAA games, high price of the ps3 and Xbox 360 red-ring of death, story driven narrative being more important than actual gameplay, content available online only, keeping ports (ie GTA 4) fixed in this sh*tty generation. PS2 and PS4 were superior in different ways.

    Completely disagree. 7th gen was chock full of many larger studious taking bigger creative risks, and publishing a lot of games to compete with the bigger players in the industry. Most of those games however were panned by critics, and ignored by gamers, while the darlings of the industry received mostly glowing reviews with their predictable big budget titles. While everyone was pre-occupied with Call of Duty, Halo, Uncharted, God of War, etc, there were tons of ignored alternatives. I saw what was going on back then, and I thought it was a shame.
    Many of those studious and even publishers went under, as a result of nobody being able to touch the literal overrated Ubisoft, EA, Sony, Activision, darling squad of gaming. A part of me does cynically believe there was a concerted effort between gaming media and big publishers to suppress competition going on then (and still today). Gerstman was fired for that Kane & Lynch review when Eidos had paid them to advertise it. 8th gen we were left with mostly nothing but the prestigious triple A studios, and the rise of successful indie game studious, which didn't see physical releases become the norm until later in the gen. So all of these big budget alternatives were gone by then.
    Too many sheep. Following what game journalists tell them to think about games, and not trying different good stuff when it hits, then they wake up to the fact it exists years later and start FOMOing over it. I could shout from the rooftops right now, people.... PLEASE go and buy System Shock physical for the PS5. Get it now, support the dev and publisher, it just came out!!! But it's useless, nobody will listen. They'll go blow $130 to play the new AC "3 days early edition" and they'll ignore System Shock until 15 years later and THEN want a physical copy.

    • @CMRetroGaming
      @CMRetroGaming  Месяц назад

      That's a completely fair argument. I'm also a proponent of playing the game and forming your own opinion. I will admit, at least in my opinion, that the 7th gen was probably that last great generation for physical media. (Switch aside) While it was a time when the internet was young and yes there was a lot of DLC, Loot box, and "things" hidden behind online play. It really isn't as bad as modern consoles where complete games aren't on discs, things need to be updated constantly and my personal pet peeve....Remasters and re-releases of game that have already been remastered and re-released. I love the Last of Us, but enough is enough..lol

    Inflation is deflation. $100 is the new $50. I am surprised how quickly the younger gamers spiked the cost of post PS2-era games. My bet is that they were "inspired" by the retro fandom of older gamers and were hyped up by cvid stimulus checks.

    Xbox 360 and PS3 for me completely destroyed by massively huge margin the absolute garbage that was the PS4 and Xbox One. 360 and PS3 was the last generation to have legendary status games. Still had plenty of original games from alot more publishers and developers that were not indies.Companies still took chances and everything wasn't as corporate DEI focused. You still had full games on disc, could play them directly off the disc, and didnt need an online account in a majority of cases to play them or digital dowloaded games. PS4 and Xbox One was the worst generation Ive ever experienced full stop. It took all the good of 360 and PS3 and completely trashed it. This current one isnt much better but im still holding on to some hope as last year 2023 was probably the best year in gaming we've had in nearly past ten years. That's my two cents lol.

      I Love the PS4, How come you didn't like it? I've never owned an XBOX ONE so I can't really speak to it. I also like the Switch, but I'll admit I have limited experience with it. You're right there are some GREAT ip's in the 7th gen.

      @@CMRetroGaming Everything just felt dead. No soul if you will. Made to push maximum profit except just a handful of games. Another thing was the overwhelming majority of sequels to the franchises we loved from 360 and PS3 came out horrible. Either the worst in the series or completely broken. Mass Effect anyone? Sure there were some really stand out games on the PS4 and X1, though in comparison, barely touched what seemed like constant hit after hit after hit from previous gen consoles. I and my friend group ended up playing the majority of seven years on two games during that time due to how horrible of a time we were having waiting for good games. Those two were online only games too for crying out loud lol. Elder Scrolls Online and Warframe.
      The Nintendo Switch is amazing if you stick to Nintendos first party games and second party exclusives. I'll give it that 100%. Since Xbox and Playstation are putting their games on PC, I decided for the first time ever to build a PC. Why make a choice when I can have both first party in one place, have access to more games in general, cheaper games day one, no paying for online services, and run the games better than than either of the consoles could do. It's crazy to say that as I never thought I would, but here we are. I see the writing on the wall. Console sales are dropping off way faster this generation than last. The young generation of gamers just dont care about the old console wars. Consoles will have a place for sure, it's just everything is all digital now anyways so why not go where the best deal, performance, and options are. Now more than ever, that is pc. Nintendo will be the last true company making "video games" and providing a physical game product....at least for now. Btw, Much respect to you man. You have always came across as genuine in all your videos. The real deal.

    what defines a generation of gaming?

    • @CMRetroGaming
      @CMRetroGaming  2 месяца назад

      I think it's mostly based on the console and time frame it came out in comparison to other consoles, along with consoles capabilities/features etc. That's not to say that it's an exact science and there is room for debate. Sorry for the long response, but I wanted to be through....lol
      For example: just my opinion
      Classic Gaming: (Old school, primitive games, Pre-D-Pad on controllers)
      Generations 1 & 2 (Everything pre- NES and Master System)
      Atari 2600, 5200, Intellivision, COLECO vision, PONG consoles etc.
      Retro Gaming
      Generations 3 through 6
      Gen 3: NES, Master System, Atari 7800 (Games are now becoming story adventures with scrolling screens, D-pad introduced, battery saves/passwords etc.)
      Gen 4: SNES, Genesis, TG-16 (16 bit gaming, controllers changed, games are bigger)
      Gen 5: N64, SEGA Saturn, PS1 (Thumb sticks, getting into 3D gaming, CD quality music, memory cards)
      Gen 6: PS2, Orig. XBOX, GameCube & Dreamcast. (Although an argument could be made that the Dreamcast is a 5th gen. console) (Graphical leap forward, games are much bigger and consoles are more powerful, all disc based, limited online access)
      Modern Gaming
      Generations 7 through current
      Gen 7: PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 (Consoles are very powerful, graphics greatly improved including motion capture, motion controls, Start of the online revolution in gaming including online shops and DLC.)
      Gen 8 & 9 are essentially the same to me as we are getting more powerful hardware. I will say that the Nintendo Switch is absolutely incredible and is one of the best consoles of all time. (I'm not a big switch guy, but it's quite impressive.)
      Some people consider the Wii U as the last 7th gen console, but most people will say it was the first 8th gen console.
      Just my thoughts

      @@CMRetroGaming That's a pretty good thought process! I agree with you there. Something like a jump from 1-2 is so much bigger than 8-9. You can only get so realistic.
