7th gen is probably the last generation when many studios took risk.
Now you barely see anyone coming up with something new.
For that people turn to indy studios.
7th gen also was when physical media was still in full swing.
I find the 7th gen library very fast, but you do bring up a good point.

My biggest problem with the 7th generation was that it was very discouraging to poor teenagers that wanted to play the games to the fullest during that time.
My experience was mostly between 2008-2012 with the xbox 360 and looking at my library it was pretty much only shooter games (almost everything after cod 4) it was a problem especially with the yearly releases of the games because by the time i could afford a one month XBLA membership i didn’t have much money leftover to play the new cod games online because everyone else moved onto the next game or required the new map packs which were an extra $10-$15 ontop of the price of new or used copies of recently released games.
Looking back at the wii, which i did not enjoy very much (only had like 9 games) but i realize there was actual variety to what i had; smash bros, mario galaxy, mario kart, zelda twilight princess, with the only 2 shooter games i had were metroid prime 3 and the conduit and most of the other stuff for it was virtual console games but no shooters.
During the time of the 7th gen i started to appreciate the previous generations of gaming much more as there was a lot that i missed out on and during that time, games felt much more whole.

I'm kind of torn on the subject, I mean we got some unique gems like Catherine, Nier, Resonance of Fate, No More Heroes, Vanquish, etc. but at the same time, we didn't really get any sequels to already existing games (Well we did get a few like Drakengard 3). In contrast, the current gen already has sequels out/ planned, for some of my favorite games.
The 7th gen felt like the beginning of 3rd party gaming and that is why so many casual games (aka sports, racing, generic shooters) were released. The 8th gen feels more like its already in the "3rd party club" and doesn't have to try hard to draw in the casual consumer.

From a PS3 perspective some good things:
Gone are PAL, SECAM, NTSC confessions, gone is region lock (helped the Souls franchise get big for example), very good multimedia capabilities (like, insanely good), no more memory cards, no more wired controllers, WiFi, Digital Store for older games (hard to find, pricey games in a bad shape?, nah just go to PSN Store), good with PSP and PS Vita, lots of games and new franchises I enjoyed alot, etc. Even though I'm prone for Nostalgia Boner and really like old school games, I still like my PS3 the most. Way more ups than downs for me.

I'm not even exaggerating; I call the 7th gen ''the dark ages of gaming'' because those past years from 2009 to 2014 were the worst years in my life in terms of console gaming. I'm just thankful that handhelds were still amazing to keep me from becoming a complete retro gamer like the AVGN lol
And I'm not even talking about the technical aspect like the frame rates or the bullshit business practices, I'm strictly talking about the games themselves.
While last gen gave us great games like Nier and the Yakuza games, it also gave us lots of bad games from the western shooters to the Japanese disappointing games like FF13 and RE5. Plus it was the first gen in my life where I experienced the ''death'' of my favorite IPs; No new Ape Escape game, no new main Persona game, no new Digimon game, no new Rockman game etc.
Last gen was also my dark age of gaming because it was the only one where *both* the Playstation *and* Nintendo consoles were disappointing to me because I didn't like the PS3 nor the Wii as much as I like their predecessors.
I'm just glad that we're finally past it with the PS4, Wii U and (hopefully) the NS being great lol.

      @Blandrew  7 лет назад +5

I agree 100% dude. Thank God for the handheld side of things for holding it down lol. And that's what I'm talking about, the "death" of so many franchises that I loved just completely vanished last gen. That, or they either sucked, or Japanese games tried to streamline their games to cater to the Western demographic....which made them suck lol. And JRPGs outside of a handful were pretty bad, and I consider that generation to be the death of 3D platformers. Even though this generation still has a lot of problems from business practices, and performance, it looks like games are finally starting to go back to catering to everyone. It's been a very long time since I was generally excited for gaming. I honestly thought I was just growing out of gaming last gen, because I wasn't having very much fun lol.

Another problem with this generation? Three things.
    1) Trying to make EVERYTHING griddy. Technically this started midway through the 6th generation, but during the 7th, and ONLY in the 7th did it become outta control. Did we need Sonic kissing humans? No. Did we ask for Bomberman to look like the Terminator? No. Did we wish Mega Man look like someone was making a griddy adult fan movie? No. It was either have your beloved franchise stay the way it should be and sell like shit, or change it for an audience that doesn't give a shit about it and ruin the franchises reputation. Rather then build upon the ideas that the 5th and 6th generations brought, this generation was all about making preteen boys feel inferior and pressuring them into screaming "MY BALLS ARE HUGE I SWEAR!!". I'm so glad we're past this trend and a lot of beloved franchises are returning to their routes.
    2) Mandatory Motion controls. Sure the Wii's motion controls may have been cool in 2006, but its reputation started to go bad when nearly every Wii game required motion controls. Like would it have killed Nintendo to make the motion controls OPTIONAL? They did so in things like "Super Smash Bros. Brawl" and "Mario Kart Wii", but why not also have things like "Mario Party 8" and "Mario Super Sluggers" support the classic and or GameCube controllers? Then when knect and move showed up, it got even worse. Motion Controls can be great, but they should also be OPTIONAL!
    3) Watering down everything for the casuals. Because non gamers started to become the majority of a consoles install base, Nintendo kept trying to water a lot of things down, to appease casuals so the game would sell safely, and sadly other companies have followed that mindset as well. Again, thankfully we're out of the causal age.

Agreed. I dislike the 7th gen due to the FPS genre diluting the market, platformers from 6th gen and before like Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter etc dying out somewhat and the focus on online multiplayer. 6th gen was my childhood, I only got a ps3 to enjoy a few 7th gen games for their awesome cinematic experience etc such as Uncharted. 8th gen is great. 7th gen was a weird blip imo.

I think the 7th gen is a result of letting Xbox grow in popularity.
Let's not forget that the Xbox pretty much is a failure in Japan, but once it started growing in the States, even japanese devs would have to cater to those people, which would mean altering/killing many known IPs in the process and getting an infestation of shooters in fear of losing a shitload of money because things were getting expensive.

7th Gen was........tolerable. While I get all the negative bullshit aspects. With performance, I dont mind 30 but it should be really consistent at the very least, or be pushing out the kind of visuals that make me as an atheist believe in black magic. Seeing the Unreal engine logo on consoles made me angry for 2 reasons.
    1. The performance was almost always terrible on PS3
    2. ALMOST EVERY GAME LOOKED THE FUCKING SAME, is minor visual variety too much to ask these days?
Also, why do all games control the same way these days? Remember when there was variety on that too?
I think the key to this gen being what it is is the lack of variety that there once was. I mean, ok there was variety......if you looked for it. With PS2 the mainstream was already full of variety, and then when you finally get around to those hidden gems it's like "holy shit how many good games does this thing have?".
The microtransactions and dlc I mostly ignored it. Thing like fighting game characters are a pain if you want to play that game in any kind of "serious" capacity then you gotta get those characters eventually and it's always a pain. Costumes I don't think it's that bad, I mean it dosen't take anything away from the game other than something to look at, unlike a fucking character does.
As for patches, eventually most of them will be uploaded to the internet and people will patch their games with modded consoles so I wouldn't be worried. I have not had a PS3 die on me, and I know of only 2 people who have had theirs die. With the 360..... with all the people who I know owning that konsole, only one person has had his 360 not die on him even once.
As for the 8th gen, meh. I bought a PS4 about a month ago and don't have much for it yet, so hard to say too much yet. I'm seeing stuff I want on the horizon. I want to play some Nier 2, even if I didn't play the first one, I just love me some Platinum.
Persona 5 even if it is for PS3 as well, why not. Tekken 7 looks cool. but time will tell if I'll have horrible buyers remorse for this thing. For right now I think PS3 sevrved me well enough.
TL;DR: not sharing the disappointment but I get it.
Also everyone buy 6th gen games, they're cheap right now, but won't be once those discs start dying.

Great video, but I have a correction to make @ 20:20 the FF7 Remake won't be a full game broken into various parts sold seperatly (think of the latest Hitman or TellTale games), instead it will be 3 full games, each expanding on their respective parts of the original FF7, this is akin to the 3-part FF13 saga (which I didn't play, but understand that they are all full seperate games that constitute the FF13 universe). It doesn't follow the western convention of partial releases we are used to, which are usually much shorter individually. So while yes, technically it's just FF7 broken into 3 parts, the total playtime will (supposedly) also be 3x as big and each of them will have a beggining-middle-end flow, greatly expanding on the universe, zones and quests.
It's up to you whether you trust them on their word, but that's the situation.

I've never noticed the difference between 30fps and 60fps so much as watching this video. did you do something to the 30fps footage to make it more obvious because there's huge stuttering here on the 30fps footage games.

7th gen for me didn't exist in my mind untill 08-09 with insomniac games still going strong and in 2011 with the psn scare,it's only as of late I see myself coming back to it to play shuff like DisgaeaDD2 but I can find the cool stuff on PC with indie titles. 7th for me was killed by publishers going nuts after 2011-2012, it's the only turning point period I come back to and see the word "season pass" popup and start spreading like a virus,

I feel like the 7th gen was just something you had to grin and bear. Without every major home console making their respective company buckets of money, there would've been a good chance of either Nintendo or Microsoft leaving the home console market. It was sort of a feel-good "everybody wins" generation to that end, which is something that hasn't really happened since the PC Engine/SEGA Genesis/SNES era.

I did like the beginning of the 7th gen but after a while those shooters and 3rd person action adventure games we kept getting over and over and over got so old. The 8th gen is a continuation of this gen which is why right now and probably the last year I haven't bought many games and currently not enjoying gaming.

I kindly respect your opinion and you make some good points but I have to disagree with you on this one because I really enjoyed the 7th generation console era it was last GOLDEN ERA for video games and gaming in general before 8th generation and 9th generation took away of what we loved about THE GOLDEN ERA of video games and gaming in general and we rarely or sometimes get that nowadays because triple A companies and developers are afraid to experiment and try something new and be different from everybody else except for Nintendo because their developers are putting in that hard work IMO! I’m so glad that I got a Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck to keep me company until the next GOLDEN ERA comes with isn’t going to be here for a long while until something changes for the greater good!

It’s odd the the 360, Ps3, and Wii were HUGE in pushing gaming to be way more “accepted” I suppose is the word. Or “Household norms.” You were no longer a nerd or lazy bum for playing an Xbox or Ps1. You weren’t immature for playing Zelda on your N64. With the 7th gen of gaming, it became like the NORM and standard of living to play a good amount of video games. It was finally completely integrated in day to day life and accepted in every aspect. I remember that was the generation where my parents and grandparents actually started playing games. I’m not an anthropologist, so I don’t know the reason as to why this change happened. But it’s odd that one of the worse gens of gaming just so happened to be one of the most influential in pushing gaming as a whole forward.

7th gen feels like both the peak of gaming and the downfall at the same time. Like, so many incredible games came out that gen. Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy, Halo 3, practically every game Valve put out that generation, etc. but man did it have its pain points. So many brown and oily looking games. COD destroying the rest of the FPS genre, the beginnings of day-one patches, on-disc DLC, and microtransactions, Wii shovelware, pretty much everything regarding the Xbox 360 (from the hardware failures to the shift of focus towards Kinect and non-gaming stuff), Japanese companies trying to conform to western trends (most notibly Capcom). Compared to the 6th gen, its certainly far more of a mixed bag than many remember.

Either way as for the PS3 and Xbox 360 I did manage to find a few games for xbox that I enjoyed and the PS3 I managed to find a lot of games I liked. Don't know if you've played 3D Dot Game Heroes for the PS3 but I enjoyed that game quiet a lot. Plays like the original Legend of Zelda on the NES.

40 games on ps3/360. That's all I have or want. I'll never play half of those again and am keeping them for collection purposes only. Never bought DLC. It's stupid. Never paid for online play. That's stupid too. I'm just waiting for everyone else to stop spending money on that stuff, so it will all become free again. In contrast, there's about 200 PS2 games I liked/wanted. I wanted everything on Dreamcast and half of everything on SNES.
Oh well, I suppose I'll get around to playing some of these partial/incomplete games in the future when they release remakes for them on PS5. I'm definitely not buying FF7 if it comes in separate full-priced installments. I'll wait 3 years for the combo collection.

I easily played about 300-400 games on PS3 and while many of them sucked I had a blast with a lot of them. Performance doesn't really bug me all that much (although some games just aren't tolerable). The only thing I hate about the 7th generation was the lack of good JRPGs to be honest.

Video was great, but I have one minor or major complaint:
The part where you insulted gamers in a few parts of the “gamers” section, aka most of the audience watching the video really was a low-blow, and I am frankly sick of videos and under 1M YTubers doing that.
16:38 especially. While it is true some people say that as an excuse, not everyone uses it as an excuse.
They could be deducting a reasoning could be for Sony making this decision. It doesn’t make them justified for making us pay for online since Valve is doing completely fine with free online on PC, even when servers are potentially more expensive, but there IS a reason. Personally I’m not getting online subscriptions given that I don’t have that much multiplayer to begin with.
So the fact that you unintentionally lump those people like me and a few others with other gamers making excuses is… ehhh
16:57 As for free games online, this might have aged poorly judging by the date of the video. You do get free games to keep *so long as you have PS+ (although the games that get offered every month are random…)*
18:09 also saying that they are crying and calling them poor makes you look like the biggest jerk in this video. Regardless of what mistakes “we” made.
As well as telling gamers to get a new hobby or get a job, like DUDE
ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!!? YOU DO KNOW WHO IS WATCHING THIS VIDEO, RIGHT? *GAMERS!* which happens to be nearly EVERYONE watching this video.
20:08 but you called some people poor for not being able to afford $60 of online. You weren’t defending it of course, but still…
And the whole FF7 thing being separate games. In some cases, those people are nostalgic.
And calling people stupid and idiots like 100% of people caused the bad practices was just the biggest “F you” in this video.
In all honesty, this entire part could be cut out and I would be watching this video a lot more often. It’s the biggest blemish on this video. If people are the reason why you hate a generation, ehh, it seems unfair. To me anyway.
And this video gave me even more insight into why this generation had the highest highs and the lowest lows beyond performance and frankly, ugly graphics, in my opinion anyway.

Yeah. All that shit with DLC, Online Only BS, Microtransactions, Incomplete games, lack of local multiplayer, etc., is why in my game collection I have more old than new games. There are some good games out there in the 7th generation and above but a lot of games are focused on DLC, microtranactions, online, internet connectivity, patches and more, and that's just not a good thing in gaming these days. Lots of games are shit because of it, incomplete glitchy BS and it's not as fun as the old days. Gaming have taken a turn for the worse over the years and it's turned me away from a lot of games as I'm not into all that online crap. Local multiplayer isn't even much of a thing these days, especially in racing games when a buddy and I could race together in the same room, we don't care to play online as much, especially cause he's not always in a place with good internet and even now, he's still having internet issues with his Xbox 360. I'm with this guy in this video above, I'm not a fan of how gaming over the years had went. Before the 7th generation will always be memorable to me.

Dragon Age franchise ( good RPGs and when the name Boiware meant someting) NOT FPS
Portal Games (you have a gun but you only do Puzzles)NOT FPS
Infamous( holy shit the karma system was amazing how YOU would use your powers and story was very good)NOT FPS
Persona 4/5 ( my god how those games made me look to JRPG from that point on) NOT FPS
Maybe lot pepole don't care but i loved Playstation Home to just hangout, chat, play mini games with freinds and even meet new pepole and make new freinds....and now??! You have nothing like that....

Idiotic acceptance is something nintendo fanboys do alot these days. Whenever they put out a mediocre or okay product, they always defend it because hurr durr its different. Difference doesn't hide mediocrety or make it okay.
We have standards for nintendo, whether its more of the same or experimentation. We don't expect every made or published by the big N to be masterpieces like ocarina of time, metroid prime or super mario galaxy, but we expect at least a great game.

Mediocre games I tried to like it but got very disappointed was: Sonic Unleashed, Sonic generations, Star Ocean the last hope, Blue Dragon, and Sonic 06. But I prefer beter performance at games.

don't trust youtube videos. Most 6 gen games' framerates were more stable and even 60fps. The only reason modern gamers believe old games never reached 60fps is because RUclips only allows 60fps with 720p resolution onwards. Even if a 6 gen game runs at 60fps RUclips will compress the video and reduce its actual quality since 6 gen games were 480p.
