- Part 4: From the death of the original Captain Marvel, to the rise of a contentious claimant to Thanos legacy, we watch as old pieces are taken off the board, Thanos' old ship becomes a very present concern, and the behind-the-scenes drama involving Phoenix, Skrulls, and other elements that will provide a backdrop to the coming return of the Mad Titan.

From my understanding, John Byrne’s idea for Galactus was that he was consuming worlds to gain enough energy that, when our universe enters Entropy, he would remove his helmet, unleashing that energy as the Big Bang to start a new universe. That was part of his planned ending for The Last Galactus Story. I don’t know if he had made that part up at the time Reed Richards spared Galactus.
How inefficient. He could've just given teenage girls magical powers, set them on a path of self-destruction and harvest energy from their inevitable transformation into evil beings.

It is incredible that Mar-Vell STAYED dead. He was liked, been in a lot of classic stories, has a huge connection to one of Marvels biggest big bads, and has a huge legacy going on today. The fact that he’s stayed dead and theirs been no real attempts to revive him but fake out his revival says a lot. I miss when Barry Allen was the Mar-Vell of DC, a hero who stayed dead despite his huge legacy and left a bigger impact on those he left behind rather than stay around and just… make better characters feel worthless with him stealing the spotlight.

@@MinscFromBaldursGate92 Too be fair, Hal Jordan is different. His turn to evil was a mistake, a BAD mistake that had to be fixed. Even Karl Kesel demanded that when he wrote final night, that he fix Hal by having Hal die to save the sun. Ironically, that was OUT OF CHARACTER for what Hal became so it had to be retconned that it was the real Hal fighting back against Parallax to save the earth. Barry and Mar-Vell had good honorable deaths, Mar-Vell dying in a sad poetic way on his terms, and Barry saving all of existence itself. They were respected, not Hal. Hence why I really love Green Lantern rebirth despite its flaws… and don’t care at all for Flash Rebirth
The thing is with all his vague and semi connections. Mar-Vells biggest story is still his death, Barry Allen had his entire tenure of the Flash, Hal Jordan was much the same and to a great degree he remained the iconic Green Lantern, Sinestro is in part defined by his rivalry with Hal and Eobard doesn't make sense without Barry. Mar-Vell on the other hand faced mostly self directed villains, Adam Warlock had a closer antagonistic relationship with Thanos. Hal and Barry also went out in big heroic sacrifices to close out other stories being told. In contrast Death of Captain Marvel is about that and only that
@@cyberninjazero5659Pretty much. Say what you will about Barry Allen as a character, but he had a very long tenure as the Flash. 1955-1985. He was considered a major superhero, a long time member of the Justice League. The modern Flash mythos came about under him. Many of the Rogues that fought Barry are still around today, fighting Wally. Heck, if there was no Barry Allen…there likely would be no Wally West.

The whole "Thanos refused to procreate" thing gets a dark retcon years later, when it was revealed Thanos spent his young adult years going across the Galaxy having unprotected sex, only to revisit every one of his baby-mamas afterwards to kill them AND their progeny as a tribute to Death.
In general I don't mind various adaptation changes in the MCU (like what they did with Gamora, Rocket, Groot, Starlord or Nebula) where they change the characters to better to fit the world and story in the movies.
my only real gripes are when:
1. the changes in the movies start to bleed back into the comics in very forced and inorganic ways (sometimes interrupting interesting stories in the comics in order to do that)
2. they take incredibly interesting and complex characters from the comics and reduce them to two dimensional side characters in the movies (the biggest offender of this would be Adam Warlock in the latest Guardians movie)
The film versions are the most known to the mainstream.
The entire climax of the original Secret Wars, the final conflict contained in the last two issues, and really the best part of the original event, is the drama of Doom's struggle with ultimate power after assimilating the Beyonder's powers. The themes of Secret Wars II don't come out of nowhere, they develop from stuff that was in the original (and that was the payoff to the whole original event), counting as well the great character arc of the Molecule Man throughout both stories
Lemme get this straight. They left Thanos's warship floating in space, abandoned... and didn't bother to so much as decommission the weapons _and_ kept it maintained and fueled so the first people who showed up with a glimmer of skill could abscond with it and immediately take it to war?
Who thought this was a good idea, and how much of that maintenance crew did Neblula's goons take with them on their trip to Andromeda?

I am glad marvel kept captain marvel death intact because his death was freaking amazing in my opinion.
About the best comics writers being also artists, I'll point out to René Gosciny, generally considered the greatest french-belgian comics (BD) writer of all time. The man couldn't even doodle. His scripts were pure text. And he was the absolute best.
The reason Monica went through so many names: Genis-Vell the son of Marvel.
When he showed up he claimed the MArvel name was his due to him being the son of Marvel.
Monica agreed and changed her name to Photon.
Then Genis decided he did want to call Capt. Marvel anymore and changed his name to... Photon.
Monica, annoyed started going by her real name (to quote a poster on a forum I frequent) hoping that Genis did decide his new superhero name would be Monica Rambeau.
Then Genis went made, destroyed the universe, and recreated it writing himself out (and creating a sister Phyla-Vell, future Quasar and Martyr of the modern GotG).
Monica fell out of the spotlight till N.E.X.TWave.
After she became popular again Marvel gave the same Specturm (which isn't bad but I feel it is a bit too close to the multiple Dr. Specturms, the Green Lanterns of Squadron Supreme)
I like this take on Nebula - a space-faring threat that is always after power. DC has lots of these (Kanjar Ro, Sinesteo, Mongul) but Thanos is the only one for Marvel. Tyrant and Maelstorm never took off.

Also, I do want to applaud your Moondragon recap. As you started to describe Odin's punishment I was geared up for a recap of the headband's effect upon her, I wasn't prepared for a good ol' fashioned New Defenders bashing!

Reed doing a bad thing? You mean it's a day ending in Y? Seriously, even when his WRITER tries to make him not evil, he comes across as evil. Never forgot, when he speculated his son might be too powerful, his first instinct was to put him into a coma permanently, because he couldn't bring himself to kill him. This was before he was BORN, just so you know, so they didn't even know what he'd be like.
Oh, and if Galactus dies and nothing stands where he stood, a being made of living entropy is born and it starts destroying existence. An interesting thing that. Basically Galactus IS the incarnation of Entropy in this universe, but getting rid of him creates a gap that more entropy fills, and that's all she wrote.
I don't know, personally I wouldn't call trying to put Frankin Richards into a permanent coma that evil, at least not if removing his powers wasn't an option. The potential threat he possesses is simply too massive to accept allowing him to even exist. At least that's what I'd believe if I existed in the universe that he could destroy and remake with the effort of thinking too hard about it. Mind you, that's with the benefit of knowing what he could do, rather than speculation on what he could potentially do.
One could argue if Reed was evil, him crippling his Omni son is a good deed cause than his son is also evil and has super god powers. Then again, who knows what the hells Franklin’s deal is.
To be fair, when it comes to Reed, it’s way too easy to fall into the trap of making him unable to act like a human being simply because he”s one of the more intelligent characters in the Marvel Universe.
Yeah, the GotG films got the tree right. The rest are iffy if not sacrilege.
Though to correct, Nebula's cyborg form was not "way after" Infinity Gauntler. Wasn't it like a year or so afterward?
Not sure. I think her first post IG appearance was in Secret Defenders #9, which they were using to promote some new versions of old characters and hype them up a bit. In this case Silver Surfer with Thunderstrike(Thor remade), and War Machine(Much as we know him better now, he was still newish at the time, at least in the armor we know him for).
Mind, she has the cyborg eye piece/face face in that one, so if that is her first post IG appearance, then yeah. Mind, still better than her appearance in IG where...well Chuck will get to it. The Cryptkeeper probably found her appealing at least.

The MCU did Mar-Vell so dirty. Why did the MCU turn Mar-Vell, the OG Marvel's Captain Marvel, into a old lady who gets killed off in a forgettable manner?
Who's Mar-Vell? You mean the guy who was chosen by Eon to be the protector of the universe and gained the power of Cosmic Awareness?
The guy who was surrounded by most of the Marvel superheroes on his deathbed?
The guy whose news of illness was heard throughout the cosmos?
The guy that was so great, the Skrulls who are bitter enemies of his people sent an ambassador to give him a medal of honor?
The guy that was so awesome, the ghost of Thanos visited him to have one last battle with him because he feels his death should be a glorious event?
The one death in Marvel that is truly honored, he was never really brought back to life, his character was never re-used and retconned like every other superheroes that died and resurrect every month.
Only to turn into… this old scientist, who got no powers, weak as hell, and killed in a flashback.
Why?
Well, because the Captain Marvel movie was about promoting Brie Larson as Carol Danvers of course.
I mean, they turned the Skrulls into an army of idiots who can't beat a powerless Carol Danvers with her hand tied behind her back, the whole best soldiers and inquisitors the Kree had to offer into a bunch of bumbling children and saturday morning cartoon villains. and even the Supreme Intelligence into a noob that cant even win against the will of a human despite it being a gestalt of multiple minds gathered throughout history.
And it turned Nick Fury from a cool badass into an idiot getting scratched by a cat and ruined the mistery of his missing eye.
What did you expect, really?
Here’s hoping that someday in the future, Marvel will say that woman is actually just a relative and the real Mar-Vell is out there in Earth-199999.
Mar-Vell is not exactly a famous character, and even then, he’s only really famous for dying of cancer.

He countered with something along the lines of "Really? Everyone here who has ever come back from the dead at least once raise their hand", and everyone in the room did, upon which Dr. Strange said "Well, yes, but we're Professionals" 🤣
33:45 : However, in another comic about the early days of Thanos (can't recall which, but I think you may have covered it at some point), we do learn, in a bit of a retcon of his history, that young Thanos did leave Titan on something of a 'walkabout' to find purpose in his life, and during that time sired many children with many women.
Later, when he at last devotes himself fully to Lady Death (not the one with the Big Bewbs from another Universe 😅), its heavily implied that she tells him to kill all his offspring, so maybe one escaped/survived to have children of his/her own?

While I do kind of agree. Although I admit, I do like the idea that, despite the appearance of Thanos, the people of Titan accepted him as he was, and he could have been one of the Greatest Titans ever (think the version from the MCU "What If?" series, if he had never tried genocide ^_^), if not for the manipulations of the literal Embodiment of Death itself.
Was Monica Rambeau's entire original run at the Avengers consisted of her being dicked around with by the team?!

Readers are just annoyed (or threatened in the case of battleboarders maybe?) at Starlin seemingly ‘’wanking’’ Thanos and Adam Warlock at the expense of their favorite characters and virtually unbeatable abstract entities. So it’s cathartic for them seeing a poorly written version of Thanos getting defeated in stupid ways. (like in Spidey Super Stories 39 or everytime Bendis wrote the character)
Yeah, the stuff with TOAA (or maybe it was just a weaker aspect of the real One Above All?) in Infinity Ending was weird, but I've been hearing this complaint *forever*. It started with the *Infinity Abyss* story where Starlin explicitly referenced previous stories (mostly Jurgens's Thor story and Mark Waid's Kazar story that was supposed to be--ugh, I forget who--but someone else was using the character and it conflicted) and said it was the "Thanosi", his clone-android-hybrid-thingies that went rogue due to an intellectual deficiency.
For those instances, it only made sense--there was just no reasonable way the Thanos who grew out of his pursuit of Mistress Death’s love and pseudo-nihilism, as written up to that point fit there. It seemed to spark a bunch of spiteful responses (Dan Slott with Squirrel Girl and She-Hulk being the foremost, which way predates TOAA) that has been simmering for the last 10-15 years into instant rejection and more retroactive justification. I'd usually see it compared to John Byrne's Doctor Doom retcons ("nuh uh! it was a Doombot!") way back when.
**Now, very seriously: I actually agree a lot with the frustration about the TOAA stuff in** ***Infinity Ending.***
I think it breaks into two parts--the part where I understand Starlin's motivation, and the part where I understand the frustration.
**For the first**: Starlin wants a story where Future Thanos's ultimate power isn't just something someone can step in and go "Hey, stop that" to. If TOAA is always there, there's always the chance of appealing to TOAA, or TOAA deciding unbidden to stop/undo his plans. Appealing to him would be akin to the old IG stories (both *Gauntlet* and *War*), and it avoids forcing his protagonists (Eros, Adam, and 616 Thanos) to figure out a solution on their own against all odds. This is a lot of what I mean by "He's doing this for the story" not "he wants to make Thanos bestest".
**.Now, for the second:**
First, as I said before, while an appeal was already covered in the Gauntlet stories, so was "there's no one to stop him", in *The End*. That one included all of him realizing that he was literally the ultimate power and connected to truly everything, etc. At the same time, it was to a different purpose (self-awareness of the good he could do vs. trying to curb the absolute worst of his own impulses)--but nevermind all that.
I actually am *kind of* annoyed by every time someone goes "Okay, so, relax everyone, this entity is the one in absolute control, the full-on deity of existence, the upper bound. The infinity, as it were" and someone wants to raise the stakes ("The" Beyonder? How about a whole race of Beyonders?), it just turns it all into an ever escalating bout of silliness. It renders a lot of concepts of power and generalized hierarchies into nonsense. Spider-Man fighting Juggernaut dozens of times until it's a joke instead of a stretch of his power to the limit and dramatic effect for that fact. That sort of thing.
I've still got that wiggle room where it depends on how it's approached and why--and that's where it all gets subjective (does one see "oh, great, he's saying Thanos can even take out TOAA, ugh" vs. "okay, I get the story he's trying to tell, so I can go along with this as a wild exception of perfect circumstances and rare artifacts to justify one exception that has nothing to do with this character being 'better' than TOAA in some way")
@@MinscFromBaldursGate92 For me it's the two for punch, 1) I know on a deeper level it's just Starlin whining about Catholicism again and going "My guy can beat your guy" 2) and you know this one so it feels repetitive to type but humor me, having anyway to beat TOAA even including "artifacts" massively weakens and devalues him and I say that fully understanding the ending where taking TOAAs power makes you TOAA. Personally the Jaded Atheist comics of the 2000s burned me out, I have to take the metaphysics of a setting seriously to take the setting seriously.
That's why for example I can love Elden Ring with its cynical depiction of divinity but throw Castlevania in the trash the moment I see 'Zombie makes holy water. Besides that Starlin did well enough with Thanos in his previous graphic novels he should've just stopped after Infinity Relativity but instead Starlin just had to beat the dead horse and Jump the shark. It really is a finale because after it I never want more
