I've got the G5 trout spey in the 3 wt. (3110) and it is very powerful for a 3 wt. Seems to have more juice than my Sage Pulse 3110 trout spey. The Sage G5 trout spey is a phenomenal rod. I run mine with an Airflo Skagit Scout 270 grain and a Rio Trout Spey 265 grain and it handles both Skagit casts and Scandi casts with equal ease. Very powerful for a 3 wt. I also have a Sage One 4116 (the OG of trout spey rods, and in a class by itself) and fish them equally with great enjoyment.
For those on the fence between this and the Loomis IMX Pro Short Spey, I have a Loomis Short Spey in a 51111 (11' 11" 5 wt.) and it is great as well. It serves as a heavier trout spey rod for me and a summer steelhead rod. The action on the Loomis is a little softer than the Sages, but it is a great rod as well. For a one and done trout spey, the G5 in the 3 wt. is hard to beat and will cover most trout spey situations from bigger streamers to soft hackles.

Red's and Joe provide some great video content that is very well done. Remember, they are a bricks and mortar fly shop, and also have online ordering available. As a customer, I can attest to their great service. Remember them when you need some new gear.

Would this rod over head cast a 7/8 weight airflo full sinker in a di3 ?

Nice video, as always! Could you please tell the difference between this rod in 3wt and the Redington Claymore Trout Spey in 3wt? I have the Redington, but don't actually like the aesthetics and the build quality (but for the price it's exceptional imho). Should I get G5 or wait for me being better caster and get HD instead? :-) Many thanks!

What size of reel would recommend? Considering the #4 for sea trouts in Denmark.

Hi Ole, you should be considering a #7/8 size reel. Here are some great options. redsflyfishing.com/collections/trout-spey-reel

I typically run 5' of straight 1X or 2X Fluorocarbon tippet. No taper, super simple.

Loved sage. Bought four for family Christmas gifts. 3 of four had problems. I paid minimum for each one to get warranty fix plus shipping. Way too much money spent to get Nickel and dimed when they agree it is warranty. It’s like a co pay warranty plus shipping. Plus for how much each costs, $900 per x 4, shouldn’t have to

@@Rnh240 ferrule female. Split on em. We just paid the co pay thing and shipping. In my opinion, ( but I have no idea how much the fly shop makes
On each rod they sold me , ) the fly shop, or
Sage , should have said they’d cover it financially. I know the fly shop staff and owner and they’ve made
Lots more off me than just those four fly rods. I just quietly paid and don’t spend money there any more. I know some people try to get loud and demand. My nature is to just spend my money somewhere else but frustrating none the less. I’d prefer to have kept spending tons of money, including guided trips from them and their guides. They haven’t reached out so perhaps they were done with me and didn’t care, or perhaps connected the dots after and realize they messed up. Who knows. My new shop likes my money, but I honestly buy a lot online and from RUclips drop down links like from this channel. Supporting the local shop should give better perks. Otherwise, might as well buy online

@@donotrobme9295 Shops have nothing to do with the condition of rods that they sell. When something comes in the door at a shop, they assume that Sage, Redington, etc... have made a quality product. Nobody has time to inspect every item that comes in the door. Quality control issues are on Sage, and Sage alone, not your shop.

My sage x 9ft for a 5 snapped playing a fish last year. It was only a few months old and Sportfish in the UK fixed it for free. I'm convinced the walls of the blanks are getting too thin, in a quest for lightness. Sage make superb rods though. It's a lovely casting and fishing tool.

@@Jaimelapoesie I agree with u. But they had a business decision and they had same opinion as you. I have since quietly not shopped there again. I spend thousands on fishing yearly. I agree legally with u. I’m a business owner myself. I bite the bullet often risking it on my customers to keep them satisfied. Customer isn’t always right or worth it but many times it’s worth it to me to just help them out while smiling as long as they’re buying. It has worked for me. Granted the. Shop I bought rods from ( and thousands more from) is still in business so my method isn’t the only one

Random question. Would an 8 wt 11”6 switch be enough for chinook, and if so, would it make a good alaska fly rod?

    • @BlueBloodCstm
      @BlueBloodCstm 3 месяца назад

No on the chinook. That time of year in AK is bigger current water combined with a very strong fish. Bump up to a 9 or 10 wt, and something a bit longer in the 13’ plus range. It would work fine for the other salmon species, maybe a bit much for some of them depending on how fresh the fish are.

I bought a 3 wt G5 last year and CANNOT recommend this rod. On my 3rd time using the rod, it snapped at the number 2 section just below the ferrule (2 is the section above the butt). I shipped the rod back to Sage expecting a warranty repair and after 2 weeks, I was told it was not Sages fault and I would need to pay $50 for repair. There was NO explanation on how they came to their conclusion. I wish I had fought them on this but decided it wasn’t worth the effort. It took 2 months to get it fixed. I have not had the opportunity to use it since the rod was returned. Both SAGE and this rod suck. No more Sage products for me as they do not stand behind the quality of their product.
