  • Fred breaks down his Scandi setup for trout spey. Trout spey is not just for making long casts and getting deep with a streamers. Often times trout may be feeding on emergers high in the water column or feeding on baitfish in the shallow flats. This is when a Scandi setup is the go-to.

    Great video and information ! I've found my 10 1/2' 4wt & 11' 6wt, work extremely well for the beaches of Puget Sound & our small to medium rivers. A Scandi line about 2 1/2 times the rod length with 10' Polyleaders (floating, intermediate sink3) are ideal to balance out most any situation with leaders adjusted as needed...total leader to fly is usually 1 1/2 rod length ... great for setting up streamers, nynph rigs and indicators....lots of variables, but tons of fun...:)

    These videos are so helpful in just getting started with Spey fishing. Would a person be wise to have both Skagit and Scandi reels for say the Missouri? I just got a Spey rod as a gift, I will certainly be in soon for help setting it up and selecting a reel. Might you be doing any beginning casting videos? Keep ‘em coming! Fly project rocks!

      Hey Ria, Thanks! Ultimately you will want both line set ups. I prefer two reels (and rods) for simplicity, but you can also go the extra spool route with one rod and reel set up. Casting videos coming as soon as it warms a bit. Stay tuned.

    I have been trying to find out if it is possible to fish Spey casting with multiple flies like on a single hand rod. I had no success until I end-up on your video where it seems normal to have more then one fly. May be because you can not fish salmon with more than one fly...In Canada any way. Do you have video on the subject ? Thanks

      Hey @gouinjean-michel3911 we don't have a video on this at the moment. we do fish 2 flies on a Scandi setup from time to time. Usually I only run two flies when I am fishing soft hackles on my Scandi setup and when I am trying to figure out what the fish are keyed in on. Let me know if you have any other questions!

      @@flyprojectusa Wow! Thanks for the answer. I am new at the two hand rod and I only have a Skagit line for now. But I will try that on it any way.

    Have you used Scandi bodies with versi or polyleaders? I'm having excellent success with these systems.

      Yea we love the polyleaders from Airflo when fishing higher in the water column.

    Can you use scandy with an indicator and bead setup

    • @flyprojectusa
      @flyprojectusa  4 месяца назад

      You could probably cast it, but this style of fishing relies on a tight line and swinging the fly through the water. Your indicator and bead would not be dead drifting.

    Which size integrated spey light scandi would you recommend for the redington claymore 4wt?

    • @FredTelleen
      @FredTelleen Год назад +1

      Hey Nolan, The Scandi Grain Window for your rod is 240 to 270. I'm a big fan of the 240 Integrated Scandi, because I like to cast faster. The 270 will slow your rod and stroke slightly, but provide more feel. Both will get the job done. Have fun out there.

      Hey Richard, Our OC 78 is my choice on a 3wt Trout Spey Set Up. We are currently working on an update and some larger models of the OC, but for now on your 7wt, the Sage 789 is a solid choice. A more affordable option would be the Loop Q 79. Thanks for watching and let us know if we can set up some reels for you.

      Sage Trout Spey reel and Sage Spey reel. Have both, love them, not a clicker though. Inexpensive choice is new Pflueger Medalist in 7 wt works great on my 11' 4wt trout spey rod.
