I really appreciate your in-depth analysis and history - joining all the strings together of producers, writers, arrangments and band members. Here's one for ya, our start of high school - The Raspberries, "Go All The Way."
I always thought they had the late 70s sound, before all the new-wave 80’s production. This would be a perfect track on Toto’s Hydra album, right after “99”.
I've been a long time fan of both Franke and Toto, but I've never seen them as being similar. Franke has a very different 'swing' to it? I love Toto and I've seen them in concert numerous times (including with BK on vocals), but unfortunately never had the chance to see Franke live. Seeing Bobby live was something I'll never forget, but I would dearly love to have seen Franke perform also (perhaps even moreso).
To your question point: I'm getting a different 'other than Toto' vibe from the Sweetheart song. I thought right away of Pablo Cruise, in particular their song Watcha Gonna Do. I find certain elements sound familiar. Toto's song I'll Be Over You, to a lesser extent, gave me a Glenn Medeiros vibe, with his big hit Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You. Or vice versa, because Toto came first. Where I'm going with this, is maybe there was just a coincidental convergence of a certain kind of 'sound', as you say, during that time. Some of the British Invasion bands from the mid to late 60's (not Beatles or Stones), imo, and some others' opinions, had some similar elements to them. I assume no one is publicly saying that Franke or Toto took something from the other. It could be worse. Look at Kansas. How long did they have to put up with people saying they sounded like Yes. That was a stretch, as far as I'm concerned.
Yeah, I see what you mean about a coincidental convergence. The Kansas-Yes comparison to me was always ridiculous. Nothing there, to my ears. The Franke-Pablo thing, perhaps, although Franke rocks harder. I just always loved that clean, tight ensemble sound.
Franke may have had influence from early Toto, as alot of artists have their influences. Franke also sounds like Mickey Thomas too you could say. Franke is extremely talented and way underrated. He knows exactly what he is doing. Amazing voice. I don’t care if he sounds a bit like Toto, so does Boz Skaggs, discovered by Toto. Every artist has an influence. The production on Sweetheart is wonderful. That is alot of of of Franke’s doing. I guess I am biased. I know Franke personally. Good ear, I guess. Listen to Franke’s other songs on the knockout albums. There’s a bunch on RUclips. Keep on Fighting is brilliant too. He just has an ear and tremendous vocal ability.
His vocal performance on this song is simply incredible. Amazing range, power, and soul. The Toto angle is possible, but they had yet to really hit it big themselves, so maybe not. Boz Scaggs has been around since the 60’s. Toto didn’t discover him - they just played on his albums.
Sorry, I don't hear the similarities you do between this song and Toto (l love both bands, btw). It took 12 mins to make a point that you could've wrapped up in under 1-2 mins. 😔
The song got me hooked up when I was 18 in 81. Thanks Frankie.

Raspberries! "Ohhh, nooo...baby, let's pretend, we could always live together..."
Frankie has such a powerful voice singing “Sweetheart”, this will always be one of my very favorite songs to listen to.
Oh wow! Even in the beginning chords I can hear what you’re saying!
You get it
franke wro+e "i've had +he +ime of my life" for Bill Medley and from movie " Dir+y Dancing".
Yes, and as I mentioned, Franke also wrote Hungry Eyes for Eric Carmen. also from the movie.

Great song! Frankie and the boys played above their abilities just for this one, then promptly went back to the JV team.
lead singer sounds so MUCH like bobby kimball from "Hold +he Line"; real eerie.....
I can relate to that, which has similarities. They has another song called. Not another lonely night.
"No+ another lonely nigh+"........ was a big hi+ for 'em 2....

@@timelesspoprocksoul true, Frankie rocks harder. I was thinking more the voice (Cory Lerios?). Should have said that.
@@cr16219 I saw Pablo Cruise open for the Michael McDonald-led Doobie Brothers, maybe 77 or 78?

Long, hard litigation to establish the obvious: Toto = Franke & The Knockouts
to me they sound more like hall and oates
Sorry Gordon but that doesnt seem right,,,,Franke Previte sounds like Mickey Thomas from Jefferson Starship.Same beat and all.
