Bike lanes are often blocked, impeded by cars, blocked by delivery trucks, construction suddenly closes bike lanes, bike lanes suddenly end, and pedestrians walk down the bike lanes and block the bike lanes. In NYC the bi-directional bike lanes that are against the curb are unsafe, police and other drivers treat them as parking spots while pedestrians treat them as an extension of the sidewalk. NYC DOT bicycle rules allow cyclists to use the road or sidewalks when there’s a hazard in the bike lane, however I’d advise using caution since many police don’t know this.

New York tried licensing bicycles in the 1960s. Wasn't maintainable and it cost too much for little or no return. It isn't like we go out of our way to make folks miserable. Drivers want to exercise their 'right' to go as fast as possible with little or no interference. They don't like crosswalks at intersections, let alone HAWK crossings in the middle of the block.

Someone will sue the city for relevancy of using a dyno because it’s not consistent with cars. Cars have the ability to go way above the speed limit but it’s only when they do that speeding is actually enforced.
The issue and reason for all this is because e-bikes have gotten to be too cheap. Barrier for entry is too low making people who aren’t committed to just buy one and start riding.

NYC is dystopian and won't take any accountability. I used to live there, and I commuted via ebike. The biggest issue with nyc is the cars, mopeds, and pedestrians. The bike lanes aren't protected at all and most times our vision is blocked by double-parked cars, or we need to move into on coming traffic because the bike lane is blocked. On the bridges, the mopeds go super fast and always go the wrong way. Also pedestrians just don't pay attention and always j-walk then get mad when you tell them something.
While I loved the ability to commute by bike it certainly wasn't the safest and in many times inconvenient. Now even with pedal assist 1 ebikes a lot of parks do not allow you to ride your bikes which is absurd. I unfortunately have a knee issue and cannot pedal for long periods of time, nor do I have the stamina to pedal a manual bike. Ebikes have helped me to discover new places and enjoy the outdoors from time to time, but it's disgusting that a city that taxes it's residence so much cannot invest in better infrastructure.
Why is it okay for people to operate Fixie bikes? Or for professional athletic bikers to go beyond speed limits? There is a double standard here when it comes to safety.

Before I begin I’m in California, which just passed a new bike classification law.
Are the old models basically a Moped now, that require an M2 license? Since they don’t have a VIN how does a person register all their reclassifed class-3 bikes made prior to 2025 and then get insurance for each?
Also, why can’t a company make a “legalese bike” that has a physical dip switch to go between class-1, 2 and 3, and physical pedaling determine the speed in MPH, even if it’s essentially a “fly by wire” system where it’s not actual pedal assist but rather “pedal to speed command” all using analog speed gages, without any LCDs nor a digital throttle in sight?

Thanks 🙏 for your awareness I’m in New York and love my ebike and bike lanes always trucks and cars all the time plus I’m risking my life to be forced into the car 🚙 traffic so it’s not a good idea for registration and licensing and yes I got the 190$ they need to widen the lane 🚲

I hope they back off but it’s not likely. There’s a thing here in CA called the Electrician Certification Program. Can not work as an electrician without being certified. However, no money to enforce it . I have never heard of anyone being fined . Employers do require it except for , get this, the State of California. If you do electrical work in a school, hospital or traffic signals you do t have to be certified. A true case of good for the thee , not for me. Bikes will likely follow suit. Can you imagine being stopped on a Saturday morning bike ride to be forced into having your bike measured by a dynamometer? What if we refuse ? What if a ten speed acoustic bike rides by going 30 mph ? I have questions.

The big problem is making the electric bicycles too fast in cities. 45 to 50 mph is too fast riding in a city.

Listen up New York. If you guys are sick of being tormented by regulations, move on down here to the great state of Mississippi. Yes, that Mississippi. I live in a small town and the police here don't care what you drive as long as your courteous and sober. Don't believe all these stories about the south. The town I live in is about 60% black people and I'm the only white guy on my street and guess what? Me and my neighbors all get along just fine. We help each other out and look out for each other. Life in the south is laid back. We don't get in a hurry about much and the cops don't care what you do as long as your not bothering anyone else. You can ride your ebike without a helmet if you want to. You can peddle it or throttle it, nobody cares. I see people riding 4 wheelers to work for God's sake. C'mon down and relax man. We have a nightclub owned by Morgan Freeman and it's a really cool place to unwind. Forget New York.

Most low power pedal assist bikes dont need this but these ebikes are basically as capable as vintage motorcycles.
Some motorcycles do have pedals as well
If your ebike is trying to be a motorcycle, its probably a motorcycle.

Cell Phone Zombies are the worst, and very dangerous. When I come up on one, I always holler. Yes, sidewalks are for walking people, not bikes of any kind. Yes, people parking in bike lanes should be ticketed. My friend who drives an electric car, pays a tax on her license plates, since she does not pay a gas tax. As long as it isn't too much of a cost, I'd pay for a license plate.

You know how you're driving down the road in your car and the deer stops in the middle of the road all going a certain mile per hour and you're like move that's exactly what this situation is... Lady, why did you stop for chaos?

I’ve been saying they was going to try this since the day I read the specs for the dultron e-scooter years ago. 45mph stand up scooter.SMH thinking I love that this thing exists but how long before the government decides to regulate. I drive for a living and ride motorcycles when I’m not driving and I agree that pedestrians don’t pay attention as well as most car drivers. I would bet my life that in most if not all traffic accidents pedestrian or other wise was cause by cell phone use . Cell phones that’s the real killer on the roads

Ebikes should require training with a test (like motorcycles) and a license.
Ebikes also need to be required to have insurance and license plate.
Any moving violations need to go on their driving record.

I'd like to see it happen. I've had enough of them violating the rules. I see them all the time, but I shouldn't, because they are illegal on almost all of out singletrack. They can do whatever they want on the road, but stay the hell off of the trails that you're not supposed to be on. I rarely ride on the street, but when I do, I see similar things here in Colorado, like cars parked in the bike lane, or on the sidewalk. That stuff bugs me too.

Have an App for E-Bike use. You can not use an E-bike without the app. Your E-bike app info goes into a computer monitoring system and stores all speed with location.. hills and speed downhill can be recorded, so anything over speed will be forgiven. Speeds over limits will give warning and eventually shut down the bike.. Resume ride after a 5 minute period. Bike keeps shutting down over lawful speeds. Police can use Bluetooth device to see speed info for current and previous date. Where there is no signal for your app, the bike goes to limp mode or safe 20mph mode automatically.

Easy pass a law with some teeth that - Classifies ebikes using class1-3 anything over 750w or 1 hp becomes a motorbike and needs to be registered and insured whether it has pedals or not.
