Tears for Fears wrote some of the best songs from that era. I have great memories listening to this song the summer of 1985. My friends and I were all into BMX that summer. We were riding our Diamond Backs, Haro, and GT bikes. This song among several others like “Shout” were on the radio that year. Great great memories. Thanks again for a great guitar lesson Marty. You’re awesome! I love that Fender Stratocaster too 👍🏻
Very cool, I forgot about this 80's song. Speaking of 80's how about Cutting Crew Died In Your Arms Tonight. If you've never seen their live version of this (Rockpalast 2007), Gareth Mouton has an absolutely blistering mind blowing solo intro to the song.
Awe man, great lesson… LOVE that you showed the Solo.. that solo is one of my all time favourites due to its quirky nature.. FINALLY i can now learn it.. thanks so much man 🙏☘️☘️
Once again, you never fail to amaze me with your skill and talents Marty. As an 80s teen myself, I too love rock music from that era. But this song and indeed the whole album 'Songs from the Big Chair', still sounds fresh today. In fact, just the other month I played the whole album to the wife, her first time and she said it reminded her of Peter Gabriel or Genesis! Where she always refused to listen to it as she said it was 80s pop music 😂. Great video Marty 🤘🏻
This algorithm is crazy! I heard this song today and was humming it a few minutes ago. So I THOUGHT: I'll ask my friend, who I know plays this song, to teach me. Then this video “randomly” appeared to me here on my RUclips… Thanks for posting this video! Excellent! Greetings from Brazil!
@ In my case, I'm 53 years old and I've been playing guitar since I was 13, but I've never really dedicated myself to the instrument. It's just fun for me, without any self-importance. So I was a teenager when this song became a hit, including here in Brazil.
You're absolutely right, my favorite is the 80s Rock, and Metal but in the 80s the pop was easy to enjoy to. I feel like Tears for Fears were like Pop Rock. I saw them in concert. I liked it all. This was another good lesson Marty, thank you for doing it. 😎🎸👍🏻
Some really innovative guitar players come out of that era ... Johnny Marr , John McGeoch , Andy Gill , James Honeyman Scott , Roddy Frame ,Bill Nelson etc ....not your typical shredders but crafted some incredible songs .
Dude,I love your channel. You explain things in such a simple, yet thorough way. You never rush through and make anyone feel like they can play these songs. You also picked a song from my favorite band, ever.
I remember first hearing this song. Where I was, the day and the exact hour. That opening arpeggio on the keyboard had me hooked. Then the guitar started. First 5 seconds and I knew it was going to be good. To this day it’s one of my all time favorites. Never gets old. Great lesson. Love the content. Also, I have Frankie as well. Great guitar. About to finish Alex’s book “Brothers.” Fantastic read.
👏👏👏 you're very good!! To none guitarists like myself,it simply amazes me to know all the different chords, notes, strokes,& nuances necessary to play the quitar!!! Keep up the great work!
Thanx Marty. I always loved this song but never bothered to learn it. When I was starting out on guitar in 1988 I was learning stuff from ACDC , Van Halen & lot's of 50's / 60's stuff. But never got into the pop rock until later. I think it's the influences around you when you start. I was lucky. I had some family that played & a Blues / Rock band on the next block from me who taught me a lot. I like your teaching style. Cheers Brother.
I am a master at playing 8 bars of a million songs…I play all the iconic licks but can’t play a song all the way through haha…my point is that opening lick is gold for doing my thing thanks man!
Great song! Our band played it and I did all the guitar parts. Played some things a little different than you and we had the keyboards as well. It was one of our best played and crowd approved songs!
Last year my brother got back into music and listened to Tears for Fears again and purchased a Nord Stage 3 keyboard. Whenever I think of Tears for Fears I also think of the band The Fixx
One of my favorite 80s synth-pop bands, part of the Second British Invasion! I love me some Van Halen but I also love this stuff. You into SRV, love to hear some of that!!!
Excellent video, Brother! I am a late 60s and 70s guy...rock, pop, soul, singer songwriter stuff, etc. But, it wasn't until the 90s that I enjoyed 80s pop. I was a music snob back then, and my crowd back then thought 80s pop was all bubble gum and silly, so we listened and played the 80s hair band music. Then the 90s hit the scene, and Rock (imho) went to hell. So, I went total 90s country and learned all those great 90s country artists (one I actually grew up with and played guitar with), and started getting into 80s pop, as well. And, now I have been playing 80s pop, 70s disco, and all the other genres that we rebelled against from the previous decades...without shame, anymore...lol! In fact, I've been playing this particular song, off and on, in my acoustic sets for at least 20 years now, and the crowds love it. I even learned something from you on this video that I am going to include in my version., Thank you for posting...Love your channel...
Very nice always grateful for teachers out there that break down songs ..... but ..... 3:00 You know how Roland plays this part and the A/D and G/D is d on the 5th string / 5th fret and slides down for the G/D an inversion right?
Nice Strat. I’ve been looking to trade for one like I sold and regret it. I have a Les Paul and a SG that I would trade either one for a Strat. I’m in Franklin so if you know anyone let me know thx. Great lesson
Would you take a listen to Nada Surf’s newer track “What’s In Front of Me Now” and consider a lesson? I’d hit that tip jar a few times if you did!! It’s a killer guitar tune.
Thanks Marty! I love this one too. Song whore I guess, especially from that time. I need some advice on quieting my amps in the house. These little dogs I live with can't seem to appreciate the thunder. Not sure if a full on attenuator is right or something simpler. Couldn't think of anyone else I'd ask but my axe slingin brother from Nashville!
Man, attenuators are nice. They can color the sound a little. Bugera make a really cheap one. Perhaps get you a small practice amp like one of those little joyos I use. They are very manageable. Or a fender micro plus headphone amp. They are very cool!

Exact same here good lord those were good times for everything 🥰
I'm a child of the '70s here, but I agree this is a killer song. This is how I play it, too. Very accurate lesson IMO
I'm a child of the 50s through 70s and I love the 80's
Born in 82 !! Love it all just like you bro !! Well said
Great times with such a variety of music! It was amazing .... and fun!
@ for sure! I miss it bad, at least we’re all keeping the great music going !! Love your channel , great stuff
I like playing bits and pieces of this song. Didn’t realize how complex and interesting the whole thing is. Great lesson! Thanks for sharing!

Cool idea. I'll check the love version out!
Cutting Crew guitarist Kevin MacMichael went on to play on Robert Plant’s Fate of Nations. Guy could play
……or mister mister or Kayleigh by marillion😀
Marty, thank you for this lesson, as an "80's" guy this was really fun for me to learn. Please more 80's bands; how bout some Outfield? or the Cars?
I've always really liked that song and it sure brings back memories from the 80', great lesson, too!

Thanks once again for a great tutorial 👍🏻 great tune Marty. All the best and have a fantastic festive season 👍🏻
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏
Classic tune, and I’m a die hard metal person. Also dug Mike & The Mechanics and Genesis type stuff.

and big thanks for the outro solo never saw anyone do that before!!!!!
Good early 80s choice. I always wanted to learn this song.
Great lessons, have picked up a lot of great tips and tricks!
Even though I was a 19yo metalhead in 1985 when this tune came out - it always takes me back 🎶

What a classic. Thanks for this awesome lesson, Marty. What about some Duran Duran?
Thank you, 80's Best.
Fantastic lesson super tasty, thank you mate !
I love that song it’s so 80s. Looks like I finally have a use for the middle single coil on my RG550 and 770.

thanks, great lesson. This song i fabulous, i remember hearing it for the first time when it was released (i'm that old). Amazing how its constructed.

Your in the The BB Box!looks like he had major influence from Chuck Berry
Great overview my band are tackling this song - What are the chords over the guitar solo? Is it the A to G?
Come on man, what’s next Wang Chung 😂
