32 years old here, shenker to me is the definition a lead guitarist, including his rhythm playing,he carried everything he did. iconic sound one of the greatest vibrato ive ever heard , technique out the ass and from what i understand, he didnt follow music theory, you can tell it was all heartfelt melodic attitude. Glad i get to experience all the work he has done, makes me sour how generic modern music is, you can never tell actual musicians playing anymore, unlike any record shencker plays on you know by one damn note its him

Michael was a huge influence in my playing. I memorized all of the Strangers in the Night UFO album and his first two solo records. Learned so much from his style of playing. BTW, the chords that the last riff plays over are A-maj and F-maj. He's stressing the 3rd and root of each chord. Thanks for this video! Please do more MSG!

BTW, if you ask me, that "Joe Walsh" lick is more of a Leslie West thing. Early MS is very heavily influenced by Leslie West (and Hank Marvin). The current generation are obsessed with speed picking, sweep arpeggios and stunt guitar. Schenker just plays memorable , melodic lead lines and is ten times the musician those guys are. I took my son to his first gig,aged ten and it was mr schenker. Half way through the gig, schenker spotted him, and stood right in front of him playing the rock bottom solo. He pulled every trick in the book to impress my son and I loved the guy for that. He couldn't believe there was a kid at his gig. My son is a devout rock fan now.... I'd go see schenker anytime any place anywhere....

Dime pulled a few Schenker licks in some of his solos. Legend. He and Uli are why the Scorpions are one of the greatest bands ever.
I bought obsession in around 1980, and can credit that and Frank Marino and Trower with inspiring me on my guitar journeyMichael has classical influences, and could easily play single line Melodie’s and keep it interesting. The gritty playing in hot and ready and pack it up and go stand out in my mind a template for LA hair metal bands some years later. And he rarely uses his pinky. A true master who has toured as a ufo member with more bands than you could imagine , never heard a bad image or story of him , probably loved and respected, finally, He still has it.

The UFO album "Obsession" is the best Rick guitar album ever! Schenkers on fire on this album. It will never be surpassed, it's a rock guitar masterpiece . The playing, the riffs, the tone, the attack, the emotion, just phenomenal album. I never get bored of listening to it.ENOUGH SAID.
That album has such a distinct sound. It was recorded, in part, in an empty old post office apparently which gives it a distinct reverb to the overall sound. Fantastic album !!

I ended up with 2 strangers albums cause I wore out the grooves in the 1st one as teen in the late 70’s trying to learn his licks. Pound for pound Strangers is the best live album ever recorded! EXCELLENT Lesson and playing! I was at a truck or outdoor RV show or some such at Pomona Raceway. I heard some music and excused myself from the people I was with to go see what it was. Back in a corner was a band, and maybe 60 people watching...turns out it was Contraband and there was Michael standing on stage...a low stage...right smack in front of me. They did the Mott song, then talked...I could see they were deciding what to do next. Michael said something and the other guitar player smiled and hit an F#m chord. I yelled "Lights Out" and Michael turned and smiled and pointed at me. He then proceeded to walk over...by then knowing I must play guitar, and leaned over right in my face and showed me every note he played. He then put his guitar in his case, and walked off as the band did another song. I couldn't resist...I followed him. The stage was low and so was the wall next to it. As he turned to walk to the back I yelled THANKS! He walked back to me, set down his guitar and asked if I enjoyed that, was having a good time and all. Then he thanked me for coming to see the show, shook my hand and walked away. Totally cool dude!!! I was learning his stuff in '76...many years earlier. One of those walked into the right place at the right time things.

To me there are three basic influence paths of metal lead playing EVH -> all of the 80s players Blackmore -> Uli Roth -> Malmsteen -> the neoclassical guys Schenker -> Rhoads -> pretty much all other metal lead guitarists Go listen to Dave Mustaine, Adrian Smith, or Michael Amott. There are Schenker-isms all over their lead work. Learning some of his stuff after having grown up on the aforementioned players was like discovering some ancient civilization from antediluvian times. When someone plays one of the bend pull off/hammer on lead licks in rock playing Chuck Berry should get royalties, MS should get royalties from 90% of metal lead guitar. I discovered MS work later in my musical journey and "Rock Bottom" is a song I will never forget hearing for the first time. When I found out later he was 18/19 when they recorded it... No one was playing modally like that in hard rock/heavy metal leads in 1973/1974 it was still mostly trapped by the blues. Blackmore had started to throw some classical inspired major/minor into the mix. The craziest thing to me is he rarely if ever uses his pinky when soloing, glad you brought that up. He's one of the greatest to ever do it. Every time I put my V on to play I try to have some fraction of the cool MS possesses. Several years back I built a fixed Wah pedal and to honor MS I put a graphic of a Flying V on it.
One of my favorite songs of his is the beautiful ballad “Never ending nightmare” with McAuley Schenker Group. I don’t know why it’s not more well-known in the USA but in my country it is a considered a classic rock ballad and I believe for many European countries it’s the same. You should check it out for sure. One of the best ballads I’ve ever heard

Thanks so much for doing this clip. As a huge Schenker fan, I never expected to actually meet one of his roadies/tech men. But back in 2022, I saw a killer Epiphone Korina Flying V for sale on Marketplace. The seller turned out to be a left handed bass player who was selling his right handed V bass. It just happened to be that he is Schenker's tech and had some bonuses added to the bass. Signatures of Schenker, REV Jones, Hermann the German Rarebell, Wayne Findlay, and Doogie White, were on the bass. Not only is it a sweet sounding bass, but one of a kind in my eyes.
HAHA, I almost forgot to mention, I became the eventual owner of this Korina V Bass. The seller is an awesome bass player in his own right considering that his band has been around since the mid 70's. I can't wait to run this tutorial by my friend and see what he thinks of your ideas and he might give me some feedback on other tricks that Michael employs.

At Twelve sticks: wish you could've seen Schenker in the 80s......he was on fire... also very good was when he reunited with UFO in 95' and toured a brand new album called Walk on Water. What an album!!! Guys, revisit that album. It's so good.. great production. Phil Mogg KNOWS UFO was marginal without Schenker. Mogg only toured after Schenker for the money. He had to I'll bet.

It was Iron Maiden (specifically _Powerslave_ ) and some Judas Priest that made me want to pick up the guitar. And although both these bands have amazing guitar solos, it was Michael Schenker and Uli Roth who influenced me further. Great video!
And the guitarists from both those bands cite MS as a major influence and inspiration. I can't remember if I've read that they explicitly acknowledged it, but I always think of the intro to Iron Maiden's _Back In The Village_ as directly influenced by _Captain Nemo_.

Happened to catch a UFO show at the Ballard Firehouse in Seattle Washington in 1995...original lineup that year. Best show I've seen! The venue was small as well.
Also he has spider fingers, shook hands with him once, I have medium sized hands, his hands are huge....... doesn't always pay to use pinky, especially if you can use your ring finger, favorite player ever

I'm not sure if anyone here arrived at Schenker the way I did. I first learned about him by watching an anime back in the late 90's / early 00's called "The Legend of Black Heaven". In it is a guy who was an amazing guitar player and a fan of Michael Schenker and UFO. That show rocks!

My very first concert was MSG opening for Cheap Trick in the early 80s. My friends wanted to score drugs and I wanted to listen to the music.

At Twelve sticks: wish you could've seen Schenker in the 80s......he was on fire... also very good was when he reunited with UFO in 95' and toured a brand new album called Walk on Water. What an album!!! Guys, revisit that album. It's so good.. great production. Phil Mogg KNOWS UFO was marginal without Schenker. Mogg only toured after Schenker for the money. He had to I'll bet.

It was Iron Maiden (specifically _Powerslave_ ) and some Judas Priest that made me want to pick up the guitar. And although both these bands have amazing guitar solos, it was Michael Schenker and Uli Roth who influenced me further.

And the guitarists from both those bands cite MS as a major influence and inspiration. I can't remember if I've read that they explicitly acknowledged it, but I always think of the intro to Iron Maiden's _Back In The Village_ as directly influenced by _Captain Nemo_.

Happened to catch a UFO show at the Ballard Firehouse in Seattle Washington in 1995...original lineup that year. Best show I've seen! The venue was small as well.
Also he has spider fingers, shook hands with him once, I have medium sized hands, his hands are huge....... doesn't always pay to use pinky, especially if you can use your ring finger, favorite player ever

As Great as Strangers in the Night is. One night at Budukan is right on its ass. Schenker was probably a better player when that was recorded in japan. The 2best live albums ever in my opinion. Thank you so much Dave for your lessons and knowledge
Check out the live album, "Rock Will Never Die" from MSG. As good, if not better, than Budokan.

I'm not sure if anyone here arrived at Schenker the way I did. I first learned about him by watching an anime back in the late 90's / early 00's called "The Legend of Black Heaven". In it is a guy who was an amazing guitar player and a fan of Michael Schenker and UFO. That show rocks!
