Except that he walked into the control room as they were mixing Strangers and exclaimed that they were butchering his beautiful guitar sound. Michael Schenker is a rock guitar beast! He makes great musical decisions in his solos. Not just technically gifted, but very melodically creative. Truly unique!
Good shit. Trouble is..when you start one of these with a guy like MS, it would take you hours just to scratch the surface. So many epic shits. And his tone. 2 of my faves from childhood would be his solos on MSG's Cry For The Nations, and even the solo on UFO's Love To Love. Thanks for this, Bruh .

Thrown into the spotlight at the age of 16 and of course, he's had his fair share of trials throughout life.........but he's here in 2020 blasting out new music and influencing countless guitarists. The true genius here is that he is completely self-taught. I read an interview in one of the guitar magazines years back where the interviewer asked something about his mode choice and how it corresponded to a particular "feel" in one of his songs and he answered something like, "I couldn't tell you where any note on the guitar is so I definitely have no idea about scales, modes or anything else. Best live album ever.....Strangers in the Night! Michael was another one of my big influences when I started playing guitar back in the early 80s. His solos always had a great sense of melody. Another awesome lesson. Thank you David!
I can totally relate to you saying "the appreciation grows". I assume I'm your age, and I grew up with "Coast to Coast" from Lovedrive e.g. but wasn't really into UFO. And even if I got "Strangers in the night", I still couldn't value his playing as much as I do now. Now, after having listened to - I guess - all important rock guitar players, I see how outstanding his tone, his bends and vibrato and his ear for melody is. - I am glad he's still alive and seems to be doing well.
Awesome lesson I have enjoyed both of these Schenker 3 for all's. Congrats on getting to the 1 year anniversary I have been here since the start and the content has been great!
This is so awesome! My dad always showed me Save Yourself and talked about it like the greatest guitar intro ever. The 2nd part of this video was always my favorite part. Maybe because RR is my favorite ever and this definitely reminds me of him, especially his Tribute album spotlight solo. Great video man!
Great lesson again. Schenker is definitely up at the top of great guitarists. I do the same when listening the UFO or any Schenker, I stop what I'm doing and listen to what he's playing. And usually air guitar. Glad Schenker is healthy now .

Check out Try Me by UFO. Schenker's most melodic and deeply intense solo. That whole Lights Out album is unbelievable, it's the first thing I ever heard from Michael. I love this album so much I made my family listen to it tonight at dinner. Haha!
I'm a huge Michael Schenker fan too!! Everything he plays is pure MAGIC MSGIC!!! The Ufo era was simply amazing!! And so does Lonesome Crow with Scorpions... Kinda dark album...I love it!! He deserves the credit that he never got for Lovedrive album... Coast to coast, Lovedrive, Holiday.... I love Michael Schenker!!! Keep it up!!
I was heavily into UFO when I was a teenager, and Schenker was definitely an influence on my own playing, along with Ritchie Blackmore and Angus Young. The other guitarist who could really rip live, like Schenker, was Gary Moore. The latter didn't have the harmonic minor stuff in his arsenal, but in terms of "edge of your seat and balls to the wall" excitement, they were peas in the same pod.
Ohhhhhhh hell yea!! My biggest influence!! n addition to showing us the Save Yourself intro you gave us that other tidbit (the "Munsters thing") is the ending of the Armed n Ready solo 👍
Have you seen his jam with Jamie Humphries on RUclips? It's completely off the cuff and it's clear he's come up with a lick that he likes and moves the solo around just to try it again. He's definitely in my top 3. Amazing to know that by his admission he has no formal training and is just using his ear and taste. Love your approach to learning, keep it up!
Schenker is a true Guitar GOD. One of the best lead players ever. The guy who probably sounds the closest to him is Uli Roth (a guitar god in his own right). Listen to things like the Scorpions Catch your Train (and stuff from In Trance and Virgin Killer), and you'll hear similarities to what Schenker was doing. Though they eventually branched off in different directions, in the mid 70s, they were both mining very similar territory with aeolian and neo-classical ideas, and raising the picking technique bar. Both were WAY ahead of their time.
Another out standing lesson and review David,ty! I saw msg in the mid-80's Michael came out well over 1 hour late, there was no bass player and no vocals, just keys and drums, Michael played though a Marshall 1/2 stack with the v going into a wah straight into the amp, nothing else!(I was front row, directly in front of him) It was hands down the absolute best performance of guitar playing I have ever Witnessed in all my years, spellbinding, supernatural, otherworldly, pure sorcery from another dimension. I was changed for life and never looked at guitar playing the same way after that night. Super lesson David, really enjoyed it Mate, good luck to you and keep up the fantastic work, Cheers!
Sorry, the agor west ballroom in West Hartford CT, they didn't explain it to the crowd but,my personal guess was that maybe there were some personal strife possibly involved? I'm just guessing, Michael came out,I want to say close to 1 1/2 late, the crowd were screaming Fu and it was a really hairy scene in the audience, they were saying Michael has a 'medical' issue but,he is still going to play, haha, when he came out he had like a little kid band on his pinkie and a very sheepish look, the crowd was like screaming murder,he plugged in and within a couple of minutes had them kissing up to him, haha, one the craziest gigs I have ever seen! If I hadn't been there I don't know if I would even believe this story, haha but there you go!
Finally. Someone who really appreciates Michael Schenker and knows how to teach his guitar style. You are a great guitar player and you have an awesome teaching ability and technique. I just discovered your channel and it's loaded with great videos. I'm going to tell everyone one of my friends to subscribe. Thanks David, you really sparked a new fire under my ass and I actually dusted off my guitar and started playing (to this great Michael Schenker video) again. Michael Schenker has always been my favorite since "Strangers in the night" all the UFO studio albums preceding that and "Lovedrive" by the Scorpions and of course MSG. Anyway, thanks for helping me get through this "isolation, social distancing tough time we are going through. Cheers.
Michael schenker is the god of all guitar players, loved him from I first heard him when I was 9 years of age, he also made a great album with a group contraband 🤘
Thanks for showing us so much I really enjoy your channel and by the way you are a monster guitarist keep up the good work and keep the videos coming because being stuck @ home I have a lot of time to practice!
"Save yourself" is a kick ass album and the title track is mind-blowing! Back in 1989 when the scene was overcrowded with hundreds of Van Halen and Malmsteen clones, master Schenker taught the world one more time who really was the original shredder! Check out any video from MSG 1990 tour, he was unbelievable, a beast! I've never heard him playing so fast and precise like on that tour, absolutely untouchable! No need for sound effects gear or silly flashy tricks or embarrassing shaped guitars , just his blessed three fingers, his legendary black and white Flying V plugged into the the amp, his wah and that's it, the Man himself in action! The Mcauley Schenker albums are all amazing, they're way above the typical hair metal rock of those years, Michael's guitar playing marks them all! I saw the Schenker fest last year and watching the master playing is always a jaw dropping experience!
Yes! Paying homage to Schenker. The biggest major influence to me outside of Hendrix. One thing you didn't mention is Shenk has the best vibrato in the biz. I fused his incredible phrasing, crying vibrato, mixed with fast ball blues adding G.Moore, F. Marino, Trower and Winter which developed my early style. It wasn't till Gilbert who taught me synchronized playing + out of bounds half bends from Lynch, Friedman, De Martini and even Hendrix (band of Gypsies Fillmore West), plus Yngwie (God bless Yngwei) with his linear playing, sick vibrato that fashioned my newest technique. We're never too old to learn. Lastly I cannot give enough thanks to John Sykes, Norum, Jeff Kollman and Aldrich that all pay homage to Schenker. It is a language that audiences and guitarists know the world over. Thanks so much Dave, for this video showing today's players to the magic that is Michael Schenker.
Very nice instructional video on how to play these parts !! However these licks are not from 2012 hehe. First two licks are from Save Yourself intro which came out in 1989 and last one is from Armed and Ready which came out in 1980. Cheers!
Thanks so much for what you do, I love your lessons :) And thanks for taking the time to find something like that last Schenker "lick", he makes it sound like a throwaway but you then demonstrate it's anything but, and I'm busting my hump trying to learn it and enjoying every minute :) Now explain how to get it up to speed please lol! :)
I liked the video before watching it. One of the best guitar teachers talking about one of my favourite guitarists? It must be great! I’ve been a fan since 78 (yeah, I am older 😂). I don’t think I’ve ever seen Michael use his pinky in a solo, he has a good stretch with his third finger! My favourite solo is still Love To Love on Strangers in the night 👍
Funny you mention the bending of the neck! My uncle Steve Casey was Schenker's tech/stage manager for many years and spent a lot of time gluing the necks back together on his Flying V's when Michael would bend it TOO far! haha.
Great lesson. Please keep covering Schenkers stuff!! Would love to see you do lessons covering Aldo Nova, Molly Hatchet, Judas Priest, and Gary Moores shred era.
Wow. Just hearing you break down Lick #2 gave me goosebumps Dave lol That kind of Minor Tonality that Michael and Randy employed, with that wailing high note goes STRAIGHT to my guitar Soul! I need a cigarette LOL ♪
Schenker keeps evolving. The earlier stuff is much more basic blues based stuff. The later stuff is amazing. He’s influenced many players. I think Slash is very influenced by his earlier more bluesy stuff.
Really great video to wake up to, Dave! My cat still was not impressed, though… That’s OK, he’s stupid. Thank you so much for the great lessons and content and congratulations on your one year anniversary! Keep up the good work!

Anyway, thanks for helping me get through this "isolation, social distancing tough time we are going through. Cheers.
The third lick is essentially an abbreviated version of a passage in the Armed and Ready solo.
The 3rd lick reminds me of Mercyful Fate
Cool, didn't realize how awesome he was/ is. First time I heard his solo stuff
Michael schenker is the god of all guitar players, loved him from I first heard him when I was 9 years of age, he also made a great album with a group contraband 🤘
Lights Out - Enjoy his changing keys, and just keeps going with very hot leads.
Thi is such an awesome lesson.
Thanks for showing us so much I really enjoy your channel and by the way you are a monster guitarist keep up the good work and keep the videos coming because being stuck @ home I have a lot of time to practice!
The munsters theme part is the solo from Armed and Ready
Awesome! How can anyone NOT be a huge fan of MS?
Your tone is pretty darned spot on to Michael's
Dude,
Love your vids. I'm going to improve my playing this summer thanks to you.
Could you do a video of a rig rundown? Would be really interesting to see what pickups you use and what mods (if any) you've done to your guitars
"Let's not worry about impressing your cat."
That's a relief, because my cat absolutely doesn't give a shit.
Don't worry, you can't talk to much about Mr Schenker!
Very nice instructional video on how to play these parts !! However these licks are not from 2012 hehe. First two licks are from Save Yourself intro which came out in 1989 and last one is from Armed and Ready which came out in 1980. Cheers!
Thank You!!
great job!!!!
Yes - Fragile on the wall... nice. :-)
Thanks 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Awesome.
Saw him live 2yrs ago with all the vocalists, bad effing ass!
Just subbed......great so far.
Brewster puts out quality stuff
Thank you (x2)!!!
: )
Magic !
Been waiting for this and the chordplay! Now we need Rudolph!!!
Hey Kim - be sure to check out the Scorpions Chordplay episode from a few months ago and you'll find Rudolf riffs in action!
: )
\m/ ROCK ON \m/
Really great video to wake up to, Dave! My cat still was not impressed, though… That’s OK, he’s stupid. Thank you so much for the great lessons and content and congratulations on your one year anniversary! Keep up the good work!
Thanx ..that helped me out alot 🙂
Great licks! Kind of reminds me of Carlos Cavazo too.
What a great content!
Love to Love... epic
Michael Schenker is a Guitar God.
NIce... Killer lesson, Thanx Man. U could do more ov this Guitar God/M.S. "Now I gotta go & impress my cat." Lol!! Keep up the Great Work. \m/
