    Thanks for honest, detailed review of these cameras. I share your excitement. I wanted to comment on the A7CR. I think what this camera brings to the table is APS-C. Let me explain. It is of course a great full frame camera, but if I want to carry less, then I can put on an APS-C lens, run in crop mode and, with the A7CR, I get the same resolution as the A6700. Extremely expensive but I’m drawn somewhat to having one camera that does it all.

    Better grip on the A6700 than on the A7cII, that's unexpected :)
    Both cameras are great. A7cII is more universal with an emphasis on street and portrait photography, A7cR is again a nod to wild life or landscape photography where we often crop and then the 61MP makes a big difference. The A7cR is also a great choice for someone who will be printing large-sized photos.

      90% or probably 100% of the people watching this channel would be just fine with the original a7c and the lens that Sony made especially for the camera. The a7c is the same weight and size as the a6700 and if I was going to carry around a camera as heavy as the a6700, it would be a full frame

  • @gordon3988
    @gordon3988 9 месяцев назад +3

    Nice review…don’t agree so much on the grip being too small only in that the A7C is intended to be a small camera and adding large lenses defeats it main purpose (being small and light). If your needs are more oriented to larger lenses then an a74 (or 5) likely the much better choice as you noted. Sony seems to be be on a roll lately; 6700, ZVE1 etc. something for almost anyone.

  • @isleskye6995

    Thanks for the presentation, Arthur! I was really excited about the A7cii, but the fact that you have the crop factor at 4k60 and thus cut out a lot of the 33 mp makes me doubt it. As someone looking for a hybrid camera, primarily for filming, this seems like a dealbreaker to me and the a6700 is actually the better choice at full-res 26 mp. I'm torn - full frame in the same body, better low-light performance, a different look OR no crop at 60 fps, 4k 120 fps (1.58 crop) and lighter and cheaper lenses.

  • @timgurr1876

    If one has full frame lenses compatible with Sony FE mount and has an older SLR or a first generation Sony FE it might be worth it. I’m invested in the a6500 and APSC lenses so I don’t see any reason to upgrade other than size and I want to go to full frame. If I were to upgrade I would probably go with the a6700. Good first review. Photos of your wife looked really good on my iPad screen. So we know it takes excellent photos. What lens/lenses were you using on the AC7ii?

  • @PhobiaSoft
    @PhobiaSoft 9 месяцев назад

    Current A7CI owner, the lack of focus breathing compensation is killing me with a lot of these G Master primes. That is the key feature I would be upgrading for, so the question is, should I go for this camera or the cheaper ZV-E1?

  • @rcpanorama
    @rcpanorama 7 месяцев назад +1

    Arthur, great review. I believe if you're going for it is because weight and size compared with A7IV, even if it is just slighter. Then, the grip is made for small and light lenses, which there are plenty in the market. Why don't you review some of them, which are the best ones? The it will make a very great travel minimalist package.

  • @Kevodabomb_Media
    @Kevodabomb_Media 9 месяцев назад +24

    A7C II seems like an awesome camera for sure. I almost waited for it but found a good deal on a used A7IV and have no regrets (coming from a Fuji XT4)
    I rented an A7C alongside the A7IV and the size wasn’t so significantly smaller that it changed the way I shoot or how i felt about taking the camera places. What did make a big difference though was the grip, the MUCH larger EVF, and the customizable buttons on the A7IV.

      @@robinfro3610 Just make the switch. I got an A7C and am in the process of selling the X-T4. While I feel there's less controls on the A7C, when setup right they just work. No need to mess around with AF settings etc. So the A7iv should be flawless in that aspect. Also Fuji lens pricing strategy isn't great and there's plenty of Sony full frame lenses that provide the same results at a cheaper price.

    • @Kevodabomb_Media
      @Kevodabomb_Media 9 месяцев назад +2

      @robinfro3610 There are definitely things I loved and miss about the Fuji, but honestly it’s been a great swap. Because of the fujis nature, I got to figure out exactly how I use a camera. I was drawn to Fuji because of the ability to use fully manual like the film camera I used back in high school, but eventually figured out i don’t use the top dials at all other than the exposure Comp. Id set the top dials to the modes where I controlled them with the front and rear dials, which the Sony has. I’ll break it down a little more:
      I have essentially set up the A7IV to be used exactly how I used my Fuji: front dial for Aperture, rear dial for shutter speed, push the focus joystick to choose focus area, press down to activate deactivate IBIS, etc. it had a dedicated video switch like the Fuji did, and saves your video settings like the Fuji did, so I have that all set up the same too. It is not much heavier, but the grip is deeper and is nice to hold.
      Image quality is amazing. I was drawn to Fuji for the colors, but ended up almost always editing raw photos anyways as I enjoyed the process and the jpegs were never fully there for me. If I want to share quick snaps with friends and stuff, I usually use my phone. The Sony actually has beautiful colors finally, but I edit them anyways usually.
      The biggest difference in usability is the auto focus. The auto focus on the Sony is so good that it just feels weird coming from the Fuji. It just grabs and tracks eyes on humans and animals no problem, focuses on very dark settings, and the touch to track focus is super nice to use. This I would say is the biggest upgrade. The Fuji wasn’t bad, but for example when I handed the camera to my wife on vacation, it missed many shots vs the Sony just gets them (she doesn’t know how to use them fully yet)
      Otherwise, it’s the same thing you hear from everyone else, the difference in depth of field is nice, low light, etc.
      Overall, it’s been a nice upgrade. I went from my Fuji with 5 lenses to the Sony with 2 lenses (tamron 20-40 2.8 and Sony 85mm 1.8) and am happy with it, but the Fuji is an amazing camera so only upgrade if you feel like you REALLY need the auto focus or low light

      The a6700 and the a7c and a7cII are the same size and weight as the a6700 and if I was going to carry around a camera as heavy as the a6700 I would carry a full frame. Secondly if you are a street shooter, vacation shooter, and the like, Sony made special small/tiny, lightweight fast focusing 24mm f/2.8 and40mm and 50mm f/2.5 lenses for the a7c plus the 28-60mm f/4-5.6 zoom. Sure it is the kit lens but when introduced that lens was a $500 lens so it has the same qualities as the others and covers all the focal lengths of street photography. No question the original a7c is, IMO, the best street/vacation/all around combo available unless you nee 4K60 or want to use big heavy lens on the a7c, then just buy a Sony a7iv.

      Arthur must be very busy. But consider this, the A7CII and a6700 have the same Bionz XR and AI chips. The features are the same, just one is crop sensor and the other is FF. Does FF make a difference? Most likely not. I shoot crop sensor a lot and the pictures are fantastic. Beware of people pixel peeping. You will be images enlarged so much that will cover the area of a big movie poster. And then, how many make pictures to hang on a wall or place on a table? That's one question I have. Where do many people's stills end up?

      Hi there, I had exactly the same position. Having A6400 with 16-55F2.8. I got the chance to pick A7CII for less price than A6700 and so I did the jump. Now I'm in the process of find the limits and differences:
      - I bought the 20-70F4 ... and yes, the true is it's double price. But I found the results from this lens really satisfying. Even on and indoor event!
      - Does it made me better photographer? ... well not exactly. But it gave me the hit to experiment more and I’m really enjoying it. This pushes me forward.
      - Do I produce better images than on the a6400? … yes. Because I always wanted to do pictures in harsh conditions (darkness, indoor, street, family, all weather …). The chip is the difference here.
      - Did I try to use the APSC lenses on A7CII? … yes. But only one passes through - Sony 24mm F1.8Z.
      I decided for a time to have only 3 lenses: Sony 40mm F2.5, Sony 20-70 F4 and Sony 28-60mm set-lense.
      If you try the A7CII you will not want back. I used APSC for long time and I’m real fun of it. My daughter shoots with A6400 as well.
      But I was impressed myself how I’m not able to go back. I got used to it really very quicky.
      Well, I spent twice the money against the upgrade to A6700. Was it worth?
      After 3 month I must say, yes! The change to just a new body won’t do it. The change from A6000 to A6300 was not a big deal, the A6400 was.
      The A6400 is so good so when I tried the A6700 in a shop I couldn’t see much difference. The A7CII was different!
      Note.: I do all sorts of photography: street, landscapes, family, events. I do a lot of postpro and the A7CII with less noisy grain in higher ISO gave me better results.
      And off course the IBIS, which was one of a thing that I missed in A6400.

    I sold my A7IV and ordered the A7CII (same color you demoed), this coupled with the A7RV , best combo I can think of ....Arthur, my only concern is the CII EVF , how would you say that compare with the 7IV for practical use (I can read the specs, but I can't figure out I my mind how good/bad it is ), the A7C EVF, for me, is useless. That video of you and your wife entering the restaurant is really good, what lens did you use ? (I understood that was hand held?) ....

    Ive been saving up for an a7IV for a long time to replace my Canon 6D full frame camera and to ho along with my 3 APSC Sony bodies (a6500,a6000, NEX-7) but now I may have to rethink about that and maybe get the a7Cii instead and use the savings on a Sigma i-series prime lens. Im used to and love the smaller form factor hence why I dont shoot my Canon DSLRs anymore and have used my APSC Sony bodies 99% if the time since I got my first Sony. Just wish they put the a6700 grip on the A7Cii as afterall the A7Cii IS a Full frame camera which means BIGGER glass which needs a bigger grip. Sony wasnt thinking there.

    First, thanks for the excellent content you produce! I do a lot of wildlife photography and my camera of choice for that is the X-T5. With that said, I'm trying to find a "pocketable" camera to carry around with me all the time. So many times I have utter the words, "I wish I had my camera with me." So I've been considering the A6400 but the A6700 is very appealing with it's "AI" etc. However now with the A7Cii I can get a relatively small camera in full frame! Price aside I'm torn between a little smaller and lighter vs having the full frame goodness... Do you think dropping one of Sony's small primes on the A7Cii will make it "pocketable"? Or is it still a bit large for that?
    Cheers,
    Greg

      And off course the IBIS, which was one of a thing that I missed in A6400.

      you also prob couldnt justify the extra cost in a faster/more powerful PC with more RAM and CPU to be able to edit those 61 MP files nor the extra $ to buy all those extra hard drives to STORE all those 61 MP RAW files. That HAS to be considered when buying a High Res camera

    • @MosesDill
      @MosesDill 9 месяцев назад

      @@sjsphotog That's different in my opinion. I have a PC with a i9-13900, 64GB of RAM, and a 4090 so that's kind of a moot point.
      What I see in the a7cR s is some bonuses with the 61mp sensor which is the same from the a7r4 (4 year old sensor). Reviews so far have indicated it has less rolling shutter in 60p with less crop vs the super35 crop. Pixel Shifting, and apparently RAW HDMI Output.
      I don't really crop my photos so I personally can't say that the quality and benefits of the 61mp sensor justifies an extra $700 for me.

    This new camera seems to be the way to go when looking for a travel camera, where your walking all day with it, climbing through historical monuments, only have a second to capture an immage you find and such.
    So, some discussion on this type of shooting with this A7cII camera weight, size, performance, immage capture speed, all need to be talked about further, appreciated perhaps. The eye cup does look small…
    I have been traveling the world, China, Europe, Asia and further using a Nikon Z7, a real reliable hammer of a camera, but I always use and like the features of Sony video cameras, look forward to integrating these advanced focus and other features into my still photography. Maybe have a comparison of software ease of use and performance points as mentioned between Nikon and Sony?

      Well unless you need 4K60 I would pick the a7c because, IMO, the a6700 and the a7c and a7cII are the same size and weight as the a6700 and if I was going to carry around a camera as heavy as the a6700 I would carry a full frame. Secondly if you are a street shooter, vacation shooter, and the like, Sony made special small/tiny, lightweight fast focusing, tack sharp and pocketable lenses for the a7c - the 24mm f/2.8 and the 40mm and 50mm f/2.5 plus the 28-60mm f/4-5.6 zoom. Sure it is the kit lens but when introduced that lens was a $500 lens so it has the same qualities as the others (double linear auto-focusing motors) and covers all the focal lengths of street photography. These lenses range from ~$200 for the 28-60 to $400+ for the other three used from either MPB or KEH. LIke new used a7c is $1500 from the same resellers. No question the original a7c is, IMO, the best street/vacation/all around combo available unless you need 4K60 or want to use big heavy lens on the a7c, then just buy a Sony a7iv.

      Don't underestimate the power of the A6700, says Darth Vader. Believe me, or not, the a6700 is the most incredible body I've ever owned, save for my 1979 Nikon F2A. But that is ancient history. I am getting superior photos chasing bees and blossoms, thanks to the A7R5 focusing system. The 26mp sensor gave me fantastic pictures full of great detail.
      I think most of us are pros, making pictures that will billboards, but mostly for Instagram, fakebook, etc., where super high resolution is a waste. If we are not going to take still and print them to anything larger than 11x14 inches, the a6700 will do great.
      Since I am not into doing videos, that's where you have to research and everything I've seen, the a6700 is no slouch. Just consider the smaller sensor when making videos in very low light.
      As for those who push FF, I have both and I will take my a6700 with me to events over the FF, mainly because of the bulk and weight. I get no better pictures with an FF body. And here is the But of Buts. If you want high res pictures or video, then don't cheap out and get the A7CR for that magnificent 61mp sensor. Otherwise, the a6700 26mp sensor is fantastic.
      Arther really needs to do a video pitting the A7CII against the a6700.

And the last of couple days i was thinking did i made a mistake with it? Because everybody was talking about the upcoming A7C II. Unfortunately pricing in Australia puts this $200 above the A7 IV at about $3300, which is pretty crazy for a supposedly entry level FF. I guess they expect people who want something cheaper to go to the used market.

      In Spain the A7RIV is 1880€ and the A7CII is 1900€. I think I’m going for the A7RIV because of the grip.

    Thanks for the review! Do you know if the Sigma 56mm will work with the A7cll? I've been looking to upgrade from the A6300 with this or the new A6700. I kinda want the A7cll more since it's full frame but hate to not be able to use the Sigma 56mm lens (I know you love it and I bought it from your review and it's my favorite lens!)

      Hey Denny! I too have the original a7C. I too am looking to upgrade my B camera. A6700 or A7Cii??? I have been scouring the Internet all week and would have loved to get the a6700 as it is considerably cheaper! I am now heavily leaning towards the a7Cii for one reason only. OVERHEATING on the aps-c camera😤. Trust me I have looked at dozens of sites and reviews. I do long form events like theatre plays, choir concerts etc that can last up to 1 and half hours. Lots of testimonials out there saying you can shoot 4K 30p or 60P for 30 minutes or 45 minutes or an hour maybe before the heat warning on the a6700 comes on. I can’t have that happen! Apparently the ACii does way better so I might have to fork out the extra $$$. 😅
      DENNY what is your opinion on this as you just upgraded??? Does your new camera overheat?

    I wonder why Sony chose to limit the A7c series (both mark i and ii) to EFCS. It has downsides when it comes to bokeh rendering.

    I think there is a market for cameras that dont look big. If you pull out a a74 in a party people will think you are a photographer. It draws too much attention. The A7CII looks cute and takes good pictures, it is the kind of camera that everyone wants to get their hands on. The pros will certainly pick the A74 instead for all the rational reasons.

    First...My video is relegated to my girlfriends I-phone and borrowed go-pro/dji gear...A pair of A7c(mk 1) bodies along with an original a7s fullfill my current still photo needs... Plus...two second hand A7c bodies cost same or less that a new A7c (MK2)... I am a retired American GI living in Bangkok...At nearly 71 yrs young...I now shoot mostly Bangkok street work...Cheers

      There’s no way to demonstrate it. The autofocus on the A7C is already amazing. This camera is faster and more accurate by certain percentages.

    Canon r8 is a full frame camera at just 1500usd and i think it makes a lot more sense than the a7cii and the a6700.
    R8 pros:
    +No 4k60 crop
    +Best auto focus
    +Canon color science
    +Full frame @1500usd
    The only down side to the r8 is the lack of fast lens at affordable prices.

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 9 месяцев назад

      Basically an expensive paperweight that can only take pure white photos with the mount cap off. Until Canon has the same lens ecosystem as Sony, it's useless to have cheap bodies. For the price of an RF 24-70 one can get a full trinity f2.8 lineup used on Sony.

    • @Bokehmo
      @Bokehmo 9 месяцев назад +1

      No IBIS on the R8 is a pretty big downside for most users.

    • @mlhm5
      @mlhm5 9 месяцев назад +1

      Canon is on my naughty list for dead ending the EF-M lenses and cameras in favor of "RF" lenses and "R" body cameras, and then threatening legal action against any manufacturer that makes a lens that will fit the Canon "R" body camera, so there are no third party lenses available for Canon R body cameras.
