I work with Romanian people, I'm an old English man and I have to admit that the young people are very respectful of old people like me. They are decent people and I have learnt a couple of phrases from them. I even had a young couple say to me, Bobby when you retire come back to Romania with us. London is no place to grow old. They are my favourite of all the foreign people who live in the UK.

Please pin this comment. I'm Romanian. In formal situations we do not and I repeat DO NOT use "bună". "Bună" s a way to greet your friends and people the same age as you (unless you're an adult). You can as well just say "Hei" which is "hey" in English, accepted in Romanian. For formal situations just as meeting, talking to a boss or teacher or even people the same age (if you're an adult) we use "Bună ziua". This literally means "Have a good day" and can be used as a greeting when you meet the person and as well when you say goodbye without worries in formal situations.

I’m Romanian. This tutorial is mostly good, just be prepared not to hear the proper forms of numbers in day to day life. So, instead of hearing “Doua zeci si doi” you might hear “douashdoua” :))
That’s how English is as well haha especially where I’m from. Our words run together and we speak quickly. So for beginner learners I encourage them to learn proper English first and then get ready to pick up slang and informal speech as it’s more common.
I had gone through life in America for 35 years... and then somehow I saw a video on the forgotten romance language called Romanian. I'd studied French for 5+ years but I guess I never really got deep into it. There's nothing really in French culture that draws me I realized... it's just sort of a thing I favored for a while over learning Spanish or german... so I heard Romanian being spoken and I dropped what i was doing and I decided right there, this is the most beautiful language I've ever heard. IMO True.

I grew up speaking romanian all my life and grew up in north America the first newspaper my uncle brought from Romania I could read it as if I went to school all my life in romania. For the writing part yes the grammar is different but reading romanian is very very easy once you speak it
My number one reason for wanting to learn Romanian is the Project of Carla's Dreams. I can sing a lot of their songs in Romanian but have no clue what I am saying. LOL I watched the x factor and the judges kept saying DA so I finally looked it up. NU was the second word I learned and Multumesc was the 3rd. Then Buna and from there I just keep learning words but I struggle to put them in a sentence. I would like to visit Romania some day.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Romanians when speaking English often say 'for nothing' instead of 'you're welcome'. I heard it several times in Bucharest.it's actually similar to Spanish 'de nada"
That's because they speak by translating. I didn't learn English, I acquired the language through comprehensible input and I can easily hear the mistakes that other Romanians make when they speak English. It seems like they're translating most of their thoughts from Romanian to English. The closest equivalent to "for nothing" is "no worries". It would be super strange however to say in Romanian "no worries", just like "for nothing" sounds messed up in English. I wish they'd change the English curriculum in Romania because it teaches people what we call "Romanian-English" and it's basically Romanian at core with a patch of English applied.
usually when someone thank you for something ("multumesc !") you will reply "pentru putin" (that mean it was a small thing , it was effortless for me to help you ... this is the place birth of "for nothing") , or you can reply "cu placere" (it was my pleasure to help you) .it's easy for us as romanians but it is hard to understand for outsiders .
hmm true, most romanians that speak english use translating instead of normal ways of saying it in the said language. for nothing is "pentru nimic!" as a way of "no problem : you're welcome"
I’m British African, but this is good for me to learn because my friend is Romanian, so I like to learn some basics. The only word I know is Sault if I spelt it correctly which is hi in Romanian. I’d love to learn how to greet in Romanian to my friend.

Really cool video, I have learned some Romanian last summer, when I was invited to a wedding in Romania. Unfortunately, I´ve forgotten a lot, but I remembered really quick. Even when I´ve known most of these phrases, it was very helpful when it comes to pronunciation. i am a native romanian speaker and i must say PLEASE don't follow her guide because it has a LOT of mistakes, we very rarely use "pentru nimic" for you're welcome and NEVER use "buna" in a formal situation, not to mention the accent omg (yes she is a native romanian speaker too)
@@njackson7770 there aren't that many "mistakes". You can say "pentru nimic", even though "cu placere" is the common one. You'll just sound old fashioned/francophile ;-)

So youtube just recommended me this video even if I'm a native romanian so I'm just gonna leave my thoughts in this comment section, in case it could be of any help to people eager to learn romanian from this video. Like many others pointed out already, the way she talks is quite off... Some times it's as if she learned romanian by translating it back from english on google... A few (note that only a few) phrases while not wrong by any means, are not that used by us in day to day conversations. It's like you'd teach a romanian that "Don't you worry about it" is the most used phrase when you reply to "Thanks". While not wrong, it's not really used. BUT her pronunciation is on point and you shouldn't really worry about this little setback of weird phrasing. This video still has a lot of great lessons in it! I must admit, I only watched 7 minutes of it (honestly it's quite boring for me since it's what I hear all the time) but if you really get into it and explore romainian more you'd sooner than later pick up the normal phrases ad correct what you've learned. Ah, and just to reassure y'all, *obvious statement coming up* just like people from Texas have a different way with words than people from New York let's say, you guessed it: that happens in Romania too! Heck, even after two decades of living in the same small area I still meet people who live not far away from me and use a word I've never heard of before instead of what I know and use. Accents, slang, pronunciation, you name it, you know it, we have it. So in conclusion I believe that this video is a solid introduction to the language, even if it's flawed. Good luck to anyone who's trying to learn this beautiful language for any given reason! I know I had my fun trying to learn your beautiful english and I love this skill! ❤❤
Spanish is my third language after my own (Norwegian) and English. I also know some Italian and Catalan. I try to use those as support languages to try to understand Romanian. But sometimes I get lost, because the vocabulary in Romanian can be difficult and I get lost sometimes.
Hello! I am a Romanian who's trying to learn more languages with Duolingo, including English, Spanish and Norwegian. At first, I tried to learn Danish a few years ago, but the pronunciation was a big headache for me, so I gave up and didn't study any Scandinavian language for a while. Last year, I started to develop a "crush" for Kygo (Probably, you know who he is). So I started a Norwegian course on Duolingo. I can say bokmal is easy for me. Pronunciation can be difficult, bu I don't find it as difficult as the Danish pronunciation. Also, I know that English and Norwegian are related languages so it's not surprinsing that they share a lot of similar or identical words. But I find interesting that Romanian and English share similar words that are not in Norwegian, too. Such as important or famous (faimos in Romanian)
"Îmi pare bine" doesn't directly translates to Nice to meet you!There is no "meet you" in this,but that's just how we say it! If we say the whole "Nice to meet you"(which we do most of the times) it would be "Imi pare bine sa te cunosc" which roughly translates to"I feel good to meet you",roughly, just roughly, i don't know how to translate "pare" in this context,but thats what we mean!

My number one reason for wanting to learn Romanian is the Project of Carla's Dreams. I can sing a lot of their songs in Romanian but have no clue what I am saying. LOL I watched the x factor and the judges kept saying DA so I finally looked it up. NU was the second word I learned and Multumesc was the 3rd. Then Buna and from there I just keep learning words but I struggle to put them in a sentence. I would like to visit Romania some day.

My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Thanks to the author of the channel for this interesting video! Good luck to everyone who studies a foreign language and wants to realize their full potential!

Romanians when speaking English often say 'for nothing' instead of 'you're welcome'. I heard it several times in Bucharest.it's actually similar to Spanish 'de nada"
That's because they speak by translating. I didn't learn English, I acquired the language through comprehensible input and I can easily hear the mistakes that other Romanians make when they speak English.
It seems like they're translating most of their thoughts from Romanian to English.
The closest equivalent to "for nothing" is "no worries". It would be super strange however to say in Romanian "no worries", just like "for nothing" sounds messed up in English.
I wish they'd change the English curriculum in Romania because it teaches people what we call "Romanian-English" and it's basically Romanian at core with a patch of English applied.
usually when someone thank you for something ("multumesc !") you will reply "pentru putin" (that mean it was a small thing , it was effortless for me to help you ... this is the place birth of "for nothing") , or you can reply "cu placere" (it was my pleasure to help you) .it's easy for us as romanians but it is hard to understand for outsiders .

hmm true, most romanians that speak english use translating instead of normal ways of saying it in the said language. for nothing is "pentru nimic!" as a way of "no problem : you're welcome"

I’m British African, but this is good for me to learn because my friend is Romanian, so I like to learn some basics. The only word I know is Sault if I spelt it correctly which is hi in Romanian. I’d love to learn how to greet in Romanian to my friend.

Really cool video, I have learned some Romanian last summer, when I was invited to a wedding in Romania. Unfortunately, I´ve forgotten a lot, but I remembered really quick. Even when I´ve known most of these phrases, it was very helpful when it comes to pronunciation. I would love to learn it better and maybe one day Russian too (I have family in both countries but I´m Austrian).

Marco Natal Almost nobody in Romania speaks like that. That is just in schools and things. Obviously you have to speak "correctly" to teach people but here pretty much nobody cares if you don't speak it neatly

We’ve “communicated “ over the past month or so a minute or so each day aside from just after Christmas when he invited me into his home for homemade wine and donuts. Over the time that’s passed we’ve shared our names and general family details. His wife passed 4 years ago and his daughter lives about an hour’s drive away so he doesn’t get to talk much. I’m learning for him and I enjoy it, foarte mult.

i am a native romanian speaker and i must say PLEASE don't follow her guide because it has a LOT of mistakes, we very rarely use "pentru nimic" for you're welcome and NEVER use "buna" in a formal situation, not to mention the accent omg (yes she is a native romanian speaker too)
I was wondering about "pentru nimic". Never heard that before. I learned "cu plăcere" and was quite surprised she didn't even mention that option.
I'm a Romanian native speaker and I use "cu plăcere". You can also use "pentru puțin" that's what I usually use

So youtube just recommended me this video even if I'm a native romanian so I'm just gonna leave my thoughts in this comment section, in case it could be of any help to people eager to learn romanian from this video. Like many others pointed out already, the way she talks is quite off... Some times it's as if she learned romanian by translating it back from english on google... A few (note that only a few) phrases while not wrong by any means, are not that used by us in day to day conversations. It's like you'd teach a romanian that "Don't you worry about it" is the most used phrase when you reply to "Thanks". While not wrong, it's not really used. BUT her pronunciation is on point and you shouldn't really worry about this little setback of weird phrasing. This video still has a lot of great lessons in it! I must admit, I only watched 7 minutes of it (honestly it's quite boring for me since it's what I hear all the time) but if you really get into it and explore romainian more you'd sooner than later pick up the normal phrases ad correct what you've learned. Ah, and just to reassure y'all, *obvious statement coming up* just like people from Texas have a different way with words than people from New York let's say, you guessed it: that happens in Romania too! Heck, even after two decades of living in the same small area I still meet people who live not far away from me and use a word I've never heard of before instead of what I know and use. Accents, slang, pronunciation, you name it, you know it, we have it. So in conclusion I believe that this video is a solid introduction to the language, even if it's flawed. Good luck to anyone who's trying to learn this beautiful language for any given reason! I know I had my fun trying to learn your beautiful english and I love this skill! ❤❤
Spanish is my third language after my own (Norwegian) and English. I also know some Italian and Catalan. I try to use those as support languages to try to understand Romanian. But sometimes I get lost, because the vocabulary in Romanian can be difficult and I get lost sometimes.
Hello! I am a Romanian who's trying to learn more languages with Duolingo, including English, Spanish and Norwegian. At first, I tried to learn Danish a few years ago, but the pronunciation was a big headache for me, so I gave up and didn't study any Scandinavian language for a while.
Last year, I started to develop a "crush" for Kygo (Probably, you know who he is). So I started a Norwegian course on Duolingo. I can say bokmal is easy for me. Pronunciation can be difficult, bu I don't find it as difficult as the Danish pronunciation.
Also, I know that English and Norwegian are related languages so it's not surprinsing that they share a lot of similar or identical words. But I find interesting that Romanian and English share similar words that are not in Norwegian, too. Such as important or famous (faimos in Romanian)
"Îmi pare bine" doesn't directly translates to Nice to meet you!There is no "meet you" in this,but that's just how we say it!
If we say the whole "Nice to meet you"(which we do most of the times) it would be "Imi pare bine sa te cunosc" which roughly translates to"I feel good to meet you",roughly, just roughly, i don't know how to translate "pare" in this context,but thats what we mean!
