Subject: Buddy Statement for Jay Martin - PTSD Claim
    To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing this buddy statement in support of Jay Martin's claim for VA disability benefits due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). My name is Clay Simms, and I am a fellow veteran who served alongside Jay for five years in the United States Marine Corps. We were both attached to SPMAGTF-CC-FWD, and I had the privilege of deploying with Jay to Iraq in 2019.
We faced challenging and harrowing situations during our deployment, but one incident stands out vividly in my memory. We tragically lost our comrade, Sergeant John Doe, in the line of duty. Jay and I were together when John was shot multiple times, and despite heavy enemy fire, we could not reach him in time. This traumatic event profoundly impacted Jay's life and marked the beginning of his struggle with PTSD.
Before the incident, Jay was an outstanding Marine with a strong sense of camaraderie and dedication to his duties. He was known for his sense of humor, ability to connect with his peers, and unwavering commitment to the mission. However, I observed a noticeable shift in Jay's personality and behavior after that traumatic event.
Here are some of the symptoms and changes I have witnessed in Jay since that incident:
Bouts of Anger: Jay has experienced episodes of intense anger that led to the loss of his job and eventually contributed to the breakdown of his marriage. Before the incident, he was known for his patience and level-headedness.
Social Avoidance: Jay began avoiding social interactions with close friends and family. This social withdrawal has resulted in losing his support network, which he once held dear.
Nightmares and Cold Sweats: Jay frequently experiences nightmares related to the traumatic incident in Iraq, often waking up in cold sweats. This has disrupted his sleep and affected his overall well-being.
Hypervigilance: He has become hypervigilant, constantly on edge, and easily startled. This heightened state of alertness was not characteristic of his personality before the incident.
Depression: Jay's experiences have led to depression, resulting in weight gain and severe insomnia. He has become withdrawn and lost interest in activities he previously enjoyed.
High Blood Pressure: Due to the constant stress and anxiety, Jay's blood pressure has risen significantly, requiring medical attention.
Mental Breakdown: In [Insert Date], Jay experienced a severe mental breakdown that led to his hospital admittance. This incident underscores the gravity of his condition and its impact on his daily life.
In conclusion, I want to emphasize that the symptoms of PTSD have profoundly changed Jay Martin's life. I have witnessed the stark contrast between the confident, sociable, and dedicated Marine he once was and the individual he has become due to his trauma. Jay's symptoms directly result from the traumatic events we experienced during our deployment.
I urge the Department of Veterans Affairs to consider Jay's case carefully and provide him with the support and benefits he needs to address his PTSD and reclaim his life. If you require any further information or details regarding my observations, please do not hesitate to contact me at [Your Phone Number] or [Your Email Address].
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
    Sincerely,
    [Your Full Name]
    I hope this helps!
    Enjoy!
    - Jay

Great video, very helpful. And liked you stressed honesty - both ways as far as not exaggerating but also not downplaying.
Tell your buddy to he brutally honest. Even if it may be embarrasing. They will never see the person reading the form and neither will you.
Same for C&P exam. Be brutally honest and bare your soul, no matter how bad it makes you look. You will never see the C&P examiner again. You will never meet the rater reading their report.

Great video. My teleheath PTSD C&P is in 2 weeks. I put an intent to file in June of last year. I added quite a bit of detail to my PTSD stressor form. The vso mentioned that I can put in a personal statement as well. The way she said it it didn't sound like it would make a difference.
Is it too late for me to put in a personal statement and Buddy statements?

Great video and advice. it is not necessary to use the VA form for a buddy statement. The VA looks at regular typed statements the same as the filled out form. Something that may be helpful to people who are writing buddy statements for you is to give them a printed copy of the portion of CFR that pertains to the claim you are putting in for. The 'buddy' can then pick which observed symptoms that are in the CFR that pertain to you, making for a honest letter that includes all pertinent information to your unique case. Important to remember that this is evidence, and all evidence is 'weighted' based off of credibility, as he pointed out in the video.

@@phototec PTSD is rated as a 'mental health disorder'. All mental health disorders, including PTSD, are grouped in reddit under so reddit.(com) /r/VeteransBenefits/wiki/mental/
Key to writing this up correctly is taking your time and thinking about symptoms you have had over the years. Make a WRITTEN list and add symptoms to it when you think of them. Think of all aspects, physical, mental, social, work. If you need help with it let me know. I don't charge anyone ever and have had 100% success in helping people get service connected.

I was told by a Rating Veterans Service Representative Personal statements from a layperson (non medical person, veteran themselves ) can describe your symptoms but cannot describe medical facts. You can say you feel anxious, but only a doctor can say you actually have anxiety. You can say you are obsessive/ compulsive, but only a doctor can say you have OCD. He said I’d be better served by getting a treating mental health provider to review the mental disorder DBQ and fill it out, or at least write a letter saying which symptoms from the list I have based on their treatment experience with me. In a nutshell my statement means nothing to him and won’t be considered as evidence or in making his decision on my claim. Is this a bad rater or is this legitimate ?
