Pristine clockwork and a beautiful soul. Ori and the Blind Forest seems poised to be a masterpiece. A metroidvania motherlode. But does it still live up to the the hype? 5 years later, in critique, we're going to find out.

This was certainly an ambitious project. Hope it worked out. I'm excited to try Will of Wisps, but right now, I'm still working on Watch Dogs 2. It's coming soon.
Wills of the Wisps actually has combat that is fun, at least.
Ah yes I hate being like the Spirt tree

"You need a soul to be called a masterpiece. Not just pristine clockwork." This is my new favorite quote about rating something a 10/10
True, altho I feel like Ori definietly has that "soul" and it's the gaming term "masterpiece" that lessens the vaulue of rating :/

Well, this is one hell of a game!
Watching this after it came out in my recommendations, I just about spat out my drink when you quoted me at 22:41. Thank you so much for the shout out, wow!
Would you be able to tell us what it means now? XD
@@jasondads9509, sure! Going from the basics, essentially, a bassline is pattern of notes taken by the bottom or lowest note played and acts as a sort of tonal "home" for where you're at in a piece of music at any one time. An "ascending" bassline is when each bassline note in the sequence is higher than the previous one - it can give you the feeling of rising tension, or climbing ("Summit" from Celeste also does this really well). Whenever an ascending bassline reaches its highest note, you'd think that the bassline would have to drop back down to a lower note.
However, in the track "Climbing the Ginzo Tree", whenever this occurs, other instruments in the ensemble actually continue the phrase from the very top of the bassline. When we listen to this, we interpret it as continuing the same line perpetually, and over the course of the piece, the line is handed off multiple times to multiple instruments in sequence to reinforce this idea. This gives you a feeling of endlessly rising - and underneath, each time this occurs, a bass part will start from the lowest note again, starting a new sequence of notes that plays at the same time as the previous one. This gives you a real feeling of constant ascension and continuous escalation of tension.
@@LauraPlatt Ah.... Listening to those 2 I can kind of hear what you mean now. Thanks for that great explanation!
@@LauraPlatt Now, that answers my question. Those kind of sound system defines what type of game it is. We gamers love games not just because of the concept art but also because of the fittings of the music. Like in an action game, whenever we face many enemies, the music begins to play from 60 to 128 beats per second or more. This is art. Games are meant to combine 2 different kinds of art. The music and painting. An art for an art.
Just my observation.
I don't mind the trial and error in the escape sequences. You understand nearly all the obstacles after one death and once you finish the escpape without dying it still feels incredible satisfying.
Actually, the Forlorn Runes not come near as trial and error as the last scene, there is some suspicious empty space remind me the rock would fall, and the acidic joke one, seems so strict, due to the color and the transparent of the water. However, I escaped Forlorn with 3-5 tries, mostly death come from my bad control, not surprise, but the last scene really hard, and that make me stop playing until 1 week later then finish this art.
^This. Finally completing it as everything falls apart around you is insanely satisfying. It is a test of mastering a new ability and flawless execution. This feeling of barely making it out by the skin of your teeth wouldn't be possible without the difficulty and seemingly impossible odds of escape. Because of this it requires trial and error... after all, it is like a final test that you have to complete.
the volcano escape has lackluster pathing directions at the final stage imo
The blind forest is good, but will of the wisps is such a leap it’s amazing.
I didn't like the story as much in Will of the Wisps.
The combat and platforming is absolutely phenomenal, but it felt too easy, at least until you get to the tough bosses.
Honestly, Will of the Wisps felt like it wasn't a sequel to Ori. The ultimate beauty of Ori 1 was its combination of combat and movement represented by the Bash ability. Mash X isn't the best but with it alongside Bash you fight while you move, dodging while attacking. Ori 2 sort of spits in the face of that concept, you stop moving in order to attack. The escape sequences and boss fights never matched the depth or intensity of the escape sequences in the original game.
Ori 2 feels like the devs wanted to combine Hollow Knight, Metroid Fusion, and then added Bash on top to represent Ori 1. It isn't expanding on Ori 1, it is adding the key feature of Ori 1 to a different game. It always makes me a bit sad when people to praise Will of the Wisps so highly over The Blind Forest.
Ehhh, will of the wisps combat seemed to take way too much inspiration from hollow knight for my liking. Don't get me wrong I love hollow knight, but ori, at least the first one, was very different and it felt like moon studios just wanted to ride the success of it. To be fair, I absolutely love the combat in will of the wisps, I just wish it didn't feel like hollow knight.
The story also doesn't feel compelling at all. The only reason ori and ku are in the situation is because they were being stupid and arrogant. Ku never flew before and just decides yup I'm gonna fly miles away from the only home I've ever known. Ori, who has seen firsthand the dangers the world can hold, never thought to say hey maybe we should turn around. Or when the storm came neither of them thought to land.
Plus I don't really have a reason to care for ku beyond the game saying I should. There was barely anything in the game that made me personally care about her. The only thing that got me emotional was when Shreik yeeted her into the ground and damn near killed her. Then again, it was the game telling me I should care about that moment more than me actually caring about it. Other than those gripes I would say will of the wisps is an excellent.
@@utisti4976 wait the game is out already?!
i guess im in the monority that the first game is way more focused, both in story and gameplay, plus the second game rehashes a lot of set pieces from the first game which is disappointing.

@@andreyovcharenko1999 truly terrible times we live in
I remember playing the flood level over and over again, it took me so long to beat it but it was intense and enjoyable the entire time. The music just takes control and makes you feel the same desperation that Ori has in this moment. For some reason, I played through almost the entire game not understanding that holding the bash button slowed down time, I just pressed and released it instantly. As a result, this section was way more difficult for me than it ever should have been, but those split second, no hesitation decisions made the level feel absolutely incredible, and increased the pace dramatically. In the final few seconds of the level I was spamming buttons and trying to redirect myself with almost no time in between jumps, and it was the best experience I have ever had in a game. I wish the bash mechanic did not have the ability to stop time, because it completely changed the game for me and I feel bad that most other players never experienced it like that.
The flood sequence took me almost an hour, but it was so rewarding! Ori is my favourite game of all time.

Yep, that was a great line.
I swear it flew over my head until i read this comment. Thank you, kind sir!
Thanks for the great essay!
Yes, some of the games challenges have some real teeth, but I can tell you man.. when I overcame those challenges I screamed in triumph.
Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but Ori for me, feels like a metaphor for life.
Ori's is a journey of struggle. Of joy. Of tremedeous sadness and sacrifice. The story of Ori is our story.
Those moments of frustration, of struggle.. we'll all face them. We'll all have challenges placed in our paths that threaten to overwhelm us. Yet, if we presist, if we push beyond what we think we can achieve, we often surprise ourselves with how far we can go.
What Ori doesn't do is cheat you. I never felt like I was fighting against the game. Whenever I failed, I knew it was because I wasn't a match for the task. Yet, it gave me enough, made me hope, made be believe that if I just pushed harder, if I just got up again, the next time I could make it happen.
There's value in that story. In embracing the difficulties of life that are sometimes thrust upon us. People often forget, we didn't invent games just to entertain. We invented them to teach.
Agreed. I was never overly frustrated and never felt I died due to cheap shots. I liked the joys of skill based, timing and memorization challenges all rolled into one. WotW was truly a masterpiece!
I think the change of pace in the Forlorn Ruins kind of makes sense. It's supposed to be kind of slow and depressing, while the rest of the game is very joyful and lighthearted. The music even reflects this fact quite well.
The Ori games are some of my favorite of all time (especially the music and art), and I'm glad you are covering them. I can't believe it's been five years!!
And as alive as the first game was, the second somehow manages to make it look static in comparison. The team at Moon Studios are truly amazing.
I know you just released this one but I'm never gonna have a better chance, You are going to do one for ori and the will of the wisps right?

To this day the biggest "whoah" I've gotten out of games as a whole, truly re-opened my eyes on platformers afters years of neglect and ignorance and showed me how good one can really be, with it's world, movesets and how they're utilized, visuals and ofc: the soundtrack. - Thanks to that, it has became one of my favorite games of all time!
Great fuckin' video!
Same.
I’ve recently gotten into Ori for the first time, thinking it would be just another Shovel Knight/Hollow Knight clone, but holy hell. I was so, so wrong.
Best mistake you ever made, huh? :P
Ori 2 kind of is, luckily I love Hollow Knight
It actually looks better than Hollow Knight.
While I think the frustration in the mount horu escape is very well deserved, I feel that the complaint on the constant death cycle wasn’t. At this point tin the game, the player is very much (or should be) used to the cycle of “live, die, repeat”. It’s very much baked into the game as one of its defining characteristics. An that idea is the epitome of the final escape sequence, much like ginso tree, though admittedly insanely more frustrating. The immediate tone shift at the end also gives a massive emotional feel as it the sudden contrast makes you fell the ending a lot more imo.
I agree. Look at how old school games always had that cycle of death and learning that requires perfect execution to proceed (makes me think of the infamous Super Ghouls and Ghosts), and how something like Dark Souls used it as an intentional design choice. That might not be someone's preference, but it's just that... personal preference and not necessarily objectively bad design.
@@naejimba Agreed and I'd like to add that it honestly wasn't THAT bad, nowhere near as difficult as the games you mentioned or other difficult platformers/dungeon crawlers/rogugelites/games that have player death as a learning step. In fact I was actually quite surprised the last section frustrated so many players; I never had an issue with it. I made it through after only.. what, 5 deaths? Pretty normal. And I'm a pretty mediocre player when it comes to platformers lmao,, at that point the player should've learned to be smart and cautious while being confident enough to not hesitate, effectively being able to avoid most of the "trial-and-error" traps. After the first few deaths it becomes pretty predictable anyways... even if not, each step you go you learn the trap, the scenerio, so as to avoid doing the same mistake next time, a la groundhog day time loop, in which case the sequence probably should take you maybe 10(?) deaths. It's actually pretty fun.

Your writing is also top notch, jokes land and insights are gained. "...the brain rewards learning by succeeding in a system where failure is likely." I think this is your best video yet. Great job!
I rarely watch videos this long on RUclips, but I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis of this game.
I don't remember struggling with most of the things that you did in the game. And the things I *did* struggle with were things that I felt were perfectly fair or added to the feel of the game world.
There are a lot of moments in the game where you complain about level design being unpredictable, hard to parse, or poorly designed, but in the context of a game that is designed to feel like a natural world that has grown on its own, a lot of that unpredictability and "poor" design actually lends itself to the feel that this world is alive on its own, and isn't simply designed to pander to Ori and achieving Ori's goals. I greatly appreciated when it looked like there was a path when there wasn't because that's what a real forest would be like. I loved when a chase sequence would do something unpredictable to kill me because that's how such an event would actually be. And I loved when a new mechanic would throw out all of Ori's existing movement skills in favor of a new temporary way of thinking about the world because it was a new and unique experience.
More than half of the things you complain about are things that I loved because they added a realistic depth to the world, even if one would say they are unfair or unfriendly. A realistic world SHOULD be unfair and unfriendly. And while there is obviously a limit to that philosophy, I don't think that Ori overstepped the line at all.
Plus, the music and artwork more than makeup for any shortcomings. Friggin' beautiful.
PS: Playing Ori with a keyboard is like trying to play Rocket League with DK Bongos. You're going to have a bad time.
PiercingSight Damn that’s a great comment. Couldn’t agree more. You captured exactly how I felt while working through the game.
That exactly what I thought too. Plus the tough “escapes” are usually a bit after you get a new ability or 2. Just when you think you have completely master the new ability Ori forces you to reconsider. From being great a new ability but to mastering your newer abilities. It’s push and pull making the player feel strong and nibble not always. It also make you feel weak and less skilled because it puts in perspective that you aren’t god in the game, you aren’t a crazy overly super power being but a spirit that has amazing ability that still can be killed. It forces to player to always be on the watch and be alert. The devs want to push the player through these incredible difficult challenges to show that you can and are better then what you are. And when you master the “escape” you feel exhilarated, pleased, surprised of your self, confident and like you won a marathon. I love being challenged and being destroyed because it’s makes me a better gamer and more confident in my skills and the feeling is truly the best.
Note I never have played platform before but I knew this game was going to be hard. So I decided to play in hard mode to challenge myself. Died over 1,500 time in the game, but I also got every collectible. 😅 I was frustrated sometimes but I never regretted and absolutely loved how hard, frustrating, confident, fun, and gorgeous this game is.

And their engine is kinda... broken to a level that would make even Bethesda proud. But they are very unique, atmospheric, open world horror shooters and the first of their kind. In fact these are the OGs of open world shooters.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games were relatively unpopular because they were always PC exclusives but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is on the horizon and is coming first time on xbox consoles along with PCs so all that is about to change. the fact that I got given Ori and the Will of the Wisps as a gift TODAY and you released this video TODAY feels like too much of a coincidence. do you live in my house? hah
This video very eloquently explained to me why I only completed the Ginso Tree escape and then never really got much further with this game. Once I got through that brilliant escape sequence I thought I was maybe starting to get the hang of this game; boy was I wrong. The difficulty curve kept increasing while my skill seemed to be staying largely stationary. Maybe I should have looked into the game more before picking it up, but as I made slow progress the game seemed to get less fair and and was really stressful to play! I don't mind a game that requires you to be on your toes, or where you die a lot, but I had no idea that was what I was getting into when I started.
Thank you for a great video that helped me to articulate why the rest of the game was so hard and mostly not fun after the Ginso Tree.
I want to see a will of the wisps review eventually as well
This video reminded me that Shammy still exists. His channel has 2 videos in the last 2 years
Bless Shammy tho. His videos are pure gold.
I think he now has a secondary channel, or something. Not quite sure though.
This was a beautiful video about a beautiful game.
Woah this came out quick
Perfect timing thanks
The monotone delivery of a lazy town reference was superb
So when I did that final escape at 39:43 I actually went faster then the game expected me too, and as a result when Kuro would show up she would actually Shake the lanterns, meaning I couldn’t reach them and the timing to reach them before the lava pillar hit me was thrown off, I eventually had to Slow down my pacing knowing it would keep happening.
This is good content... absolutely beautiful
finishing this game was so rewarding
Dude, you‘re an amazing writer!
Hollow Knight set my expectations of indie games so high that even great games like Ori don't really compell me. I watched a whole playthrough and several analysis videos, but I can't help but think I would have been dissapointed by this game if I've played it. Hollow Knight is so long and all it's elements synergize so beautifully that I feel like I have unrealistic expectations towards other games.
Fuck me, now I'm thinking about Silksong again! Gaaaaah! When are we getting any news on that!?! I'm STARVIN' 'ERE!
That's a fine poetic review, thank you.
I like how your spoken presentation reads almost like a poetry.
It is a very enjoyable (and rather unique) experience.
