- Everyone always loves when I talk about the 3DO M2, the retro gaming cancelled successor to the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer....and considering its the day after Thanksgiving it's time to give back! With almost 10GB of never before seen / released 3DO M2 software...and don't worry, this is just the start :) Retro games post Thanksgiving gift incoming! I really with the 3DO M2 had survived to take on the N64 and Dreamcast! Video game history that never happened :)

Everyone knows the 3DO video game console...but not everyone knows about the cancelled 3DO M2! I have been doing my best to bring this rare and obscure retro gaming platform to everyone...and today I have something extra special...the Panasonic FZ-35 Interactive Kiosk...also known as the finished 3DO M2 video game console from Panasonic that was cancelled RIGHT BEFORE RELEASE! and we have some new software to dump and share with everyone! and a few shots of Panasonic FZ-21 3DO M2 console for good measure!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghu, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerhold, Adrien Sebbane,

People on the internet will tell you that the Panasonic FZ-35 is a prototype 3DO M2 console...and that would be wrong. It's actually a product Panasonic / Matsushita sold at retail as an interactive kiosk unit ala the Philips CD-I. Unlike the CD-I...this actually has games you would want to play...because this is just the 3DO M2 console in it's final hardware iteration...except not released as a games console! But that won't stop it from playing SOME games today...and hopefully a LOT more in the future!
Gaming is filled with obscure hardware but it does NOT get any more obscure than this! (ok MAYBE SNES CD) and any time I can release new software for people to enjoy from both a video game development, video game history and video game preservation standpoint I want to share it with all of you!
It would have been amazing to see M2 take on PS1, Nintendo 64 and even Dreamcast. But the gaming console landscape is littered with hardware that never materialized!
But it did become an arcade board from Konami with Battle Tryst, Heat of Eleven 98, Total Vice, Evil Night and my fav game on the platform...Tobe! Polystars!

This is up there with the Jaguar molds showing up at the dentist's office
Haha true. But that was just the plastic shell. This is all still running on M2 hardware
Mortal Kombat 3 was going to come out on the M2. There was an article about it in GamePro… it was supposed to be the arcade perfect conversion
It had the power for it
I still can't believe people saw the Aztek and said, "That's it. That's the vehicle I want to buy and drive for the next 5-10 years"
Yeah you really had to be a bit blind to want that one
I just love how over engineered the whole thing was. If they couldn't make it good at least make it do a lot of things, I guess.
Quantity over quality
I actually heard it was one of the highest rated vehicles in terms of customer satisfaction, which I found very surprising. It certainly wasn't based on looks, but it must have done something right...
Another off label use for the M2 hardware: revisiting the Pontiac Aztec in 2023
I wish MARS FPGA had an M2 core. This would make people interested in that "console" and then create homebrew games.
You never know
GM also used the cd-i for sales training. How do I know? Because back in the day I used to work for a GM dealer and it is indeed how I acquired my cd-i!
Yep. DCI did Cd-I development too. They used a lot of console based marketing software
I was so excited for this system to come out.
Me too. Obviously 🤣 or else I wouldn’t collect all this
M2 finally.
More will be coming :)
Trouble Decker... Another call to Bitrate to release more info about it.
Yeah that’s a lost cause. We’ve offered…stupid money. Other things. So we are looking for a second source
Speaking of GM products VGE. My parents purchased a 1998 Chevy Blazer with 124,000 miles at a yard sale for $500 bucks. It was sitting in the previous owners lot for 8 years, the back tires were down and it ran really rough. So the only thing we could do after the sale was to tow it to our mechanic.
Thankfully they lucked out. It needed a tune up and it was purring like a kitty cat. We then fixed the tires, did 100% brake work, change all the fluids and had it registered, inspected, and insured soon after. All together the cost was $1,600. Great deal IMO. 8^)
Those old cars will outlive us all
*VGE inserts Disc 10 to package*
Stan Pines: After all these years, finally...I have them all.
Haha def still want to find the rest but this is the most in one set ever. I released the Oldsmobile one some years back. So it’s 5 of 10. One is a reformatting disc that just erases the HDD. So while I’d love to acquire it…no real “content” to speak of. So it’s 4 discs short on this folder
I didn’t even know an “m2” version even existed until finding your channel but I was quite familiar with the original 3DO
It’s not well known and most sites tell you it doesn’t exist
This is not the M2 as he claims tho
The M2 is right there in the video.
Yeah I’ll never understand these comments that say M2 isn’t real. Like how many times do I need to show M2 hardware for people to believe it exists. What is this…elaborate CGi? Lol
Yeah it def is though
In their fevered desperation to shift units Panasonic thought GM meant Game Maker.
🤣
The day the 3DO gets the FPGA core treatment, I hope the M2 gets the same treatment as well.
I’ve sent chips in for decap so you never know
I'm thinking that this might be the only way that most of us can get access to anything close to the experience of owning and playing an M2 console. Tell me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't an advantage of an FPGA M2 be that it could play all existing arcade games without any of the fiddlyness you had to go through yourself? I'm basing this on your videos to date. By the way, thank you for all your content. You keep the dream alive. I love the idea of an M2 resurgence and homebrew scene, however unlikely that is. I refuse to give up the fantasy.
3DO was a great example of the kind of aspirational (maybe naive?) '90s business model that showed massive faith in independent creators. It isn't and wasn't common - and maybe not profitable. Bummer. I'm Australian and I found a 3DO in a pawn shop here in 1996. To this date, it is my favorite console. Friends think I'm weird. I don't give a damn. M2 forever! [alt: "M2 eventually!"].
You’d have to have a bios implementation for arcade for it to work along with bios for FZ-21 and 35. But the underlying hardware is all basically the same
Sounds like not too much hassle at all.
It wouldn’t be too hard honestly once you had the core working
This was a cool video I have memories seeing the m2 in mags and wanting to get one
Same. I had all the mags. I just decided I’d go out and get one anyway 🤗
Love an m2 update video 🥂
Me too. This one took me a minute but more will be coming :)
I remember see one displayed as a home theater type thing in the old gateway computer store back in 1999. that’s the first and only time I was face to face with an M2. I’m gonna be looking around hehe. Good stuff!
Oh you saw one there eh? That’s news to me
Yup. I never forgot that! And even back then I was and still am a big 3do fan and collector. and I forgot to say love your videos man! Great work! Also look for this on you tube but someone is porting mortal Kombat 2 to the 3do. look AWSOME!
Glad you enjoy them. Do you remember what exactly the M2 was doing?
@@VideoGameEsoterica yea I do it was being sold as some kind of pc for your tv entered Hammond Center that plays DVD movies. it was the very same one you have in your videos. and they even had a 3do controller hooked up to it for some reason. and it was hooked up to a big tv playing a dvd movie. This was in South Carolina..
Sold as a home entertainment pc.
Wow I can't believe cars ever looked like that.
They did and they were ugly as sin
It's Black 3DO Friday! The best kind of deal.
100% off! I’ve lost so much money NOT selling these rarities to collectors to keep ‘em private!
What kind of deal was spending 100M to your produce kiosks to reproduce MEPG VCD? Makes absolutely no sense when there surely were non propietary cheaper options.
Haha they were desperate to make the money back. That’s why it ended up in ATM machines and coffee vending machines too. Anything they could do to claw back $$
can't wait for it to be emulated on mame, hope to be still alive when it will happen :S
Part of understanding how to do it is first getting arcade games to boot on console hardware which has started
Its fascinating what you always get out of your hat...
Never heard of that hardware - and i thought im "well versed" :O
Plenty more under my hat too ;)
Esoterica indeed.
Haha yeah a real deep cut effort by myself and some other people to keep being able to release this stuff and talk about it
So.... GM finally has something I want ....- narrows eyes-. F......u.......- screams internally -
Great video had no idea about the M2, what’s the Lightgun shooter on 6:53? 😎
Evil Night :)
Really cool that peace of history of the M2
Yeah it’s way lesser known so being able to release 8GB worth of it is always fun
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeh, its cool to have those files archived. Can we emulate the M2 software on PCs?
Not as of yet. 4 of the 5 arcade games in MAME but that’s it. Hoping that changes in the future
@@VideoGameEsoterica Ok. Sure, i think that on the future they could be emulated too
Definitely :)
The hardware must have been really cheap for them to acquire, to just run kiosks.
Nah. They bought it for 100 million then killed the console
@@VideoGameEsoterica Not Panasonic, I meant the marketing company.
Ahh I see. Yes it couldn’t have been too expensive per unit
Yo good update video! What's the name of the 3D fighter @05:00? Reminds me of Tobal #2 😎👌
Battle Tryst
@VideoGameEsoterica - Thanks 👍
👍
have you ever heard of the 3DO MX?
Of course :) working on a video on it
this is really cool tbh, waste of a 3do yeah but in a way it's kind of like a NeoGeo powering the Prifun machines XD! Question for you: have you tried to reach out to DCI to see if they have any of the disks lying around or anything? I know it's a snowballs chance in hell that anyone knows but i thought it may be worth a shot
Yes I have. Sadly DCI has nothing left
@@VideoGameEsoterica damn -_- still thanks for trying!
Always happy to do it
There is an auction on yahoo auctions Japan ending today for min. USD 7000. Outch!
That one has been up there for awhile too
How many GM dealers have you contacted so far?
not many. who knows how many are sitting in backrooms on a shelf somewhere!
Bragging about golf again😂😂😂
Lol did I. I made this awhile ago
So fun and random!
Welcome to my world panda. Always fun and random. Like watching actual pandas in zoos lol
Is it possible to extract the videos from the dat files?
Possibly. I’ve never much looked into it but anything can be extracted
So this will be a full production system? Nice. where can i buy it?
No this is all old hardware from the 90s/early 2000s
M2 seems just as powerful as 3DO said it was. 3D games looked like it could compete against Saturn and PlayStation. The only thing holding it back is marketing. 3DO failed, and there WERE some software, but not nearly enough to put the consoles on the map.
I was hyped for this, because it had something like a first person shooter game that felt like a Predator clone or "look-alike."
I also liked how the controller looked this time.
Yes it was more powerful than PS1 / Saturn / N64
I think it would have still failed because it seems that it is just a bit more powerful than the N64 and less than DC, so it would have probably followed a similar path, als the brand 3DO was worthless at the time.
@@joseluki That's what I said in my original comment. Thing is, though, the graphics looks closer to Dreamcast from what little we see here.
We will never know sadly
Yes you get V close to launch day Dreamcast graphics
I take new dumps daily. No one should be interested in Trip Hawkins' dumps just because they cost $700.
Road rash and street fighter were good on 3do, but would you pay $700 to play 2 good games? Not i, said the spider to Trip Hawkins' turd baby.
Lol this is quite the comment
Does anyone know how to unlock the 2002 Pontiac Firebird?
U/D/L/R/B/A/Start
@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, but to unlock the red colored one you have to input ABACABB.
🤣
I actually think the Tesla Model X is uglier than the Pontiac Aztek, which I indeed thought was the ugliest vehicle ever made until recently.
I mean at that point it’s a pure race to the bottom lol
Google the Fiat Multipla. That beats the Aztek in uglyness
A serious race for last place lol
6:55 Mexico is also North America. Gosh that one factual error makes me question every word I have ever heard from you. What is truth? What is lies? I can't know with you anymore...
🤣 get back to the discord server so I can give you hell back there
GM lol
Haha an unexpected gift I’m sure
This is NOT the M2 and is just another console with another name from the same company
Yeah dunno what to tell you. This is the 3DO M2 hardware running M2 code 🤷🏻♂️
What's not m2 about it?
Lol seriously
I am also curious to why this isn't an M2. Sounds intriguing.
