Everyone knows the 3DO video game console...but not everyone knows about the cancelled 3DO M2! I have been doing my best to bring this rare and obscure retro gaming platform to everyone...and today I have something extra special...basically the entire family of 3DO M2 hardware all in one video! Retro gaming vaporware family reunion!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghu, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerhold, Adrien Sebbane,

People on the internet will tell you that the Panasonic FZ-21 is a prototype 3DO M2 console...and that would be wrong. It's actually a product Panasonic / Matsushita sold at retail as an interactive kiosk unit ala the Philips CD-I. Unlike the CD-I...this actually has games you would want to play...because this is just the 3DO M2 console in it's final hardware iteration...except not released as a games console! But that won't stop it from playing SOME games today...and hopefully a LOT more in the future!
Gaming is filled with obscure hardware but it does NOT get any more obscure than this! (ok MAYBE SNES CD) It took me ten years of active searching to find an FZ-21S1TK...but I found it and now I get to show you all! It would have been amazing to see M2 take on PS1, Nintendo 64 and even Dreamcast.
Plus we have the Panasonic FZ-35, a 3DO M2 with extra RAM, a DVD Rom Drive and a Hard Drive built in!
And of course the arcade board from Konami with Battle Tryst, Heat of Eleven 98, Total Vice, Evil Night and my fav game on the platform...Tobe! Polystars!
and maybe...just maybe...what is linked down below! That's right...an alpha development WIP conversion of Tobe! Polystars from the Konami M2 arcade hardware to home console hardware! That's right...the 3DO M2 is going to be getting releases :) we are making it a fully fledged console you can play actual finished games on...because it's what M2 deserves after Panasonic cancelled the 3DO M2!

I didn't know anything about the M2 at all! Very interesting and cool!!! Love the replies to the trolling on dust and pointers! You need more dust, and more pointers!!!!
haha any time I get some rant comment or email like that...I go twice as hard!
"A Hunter of People" is a very Chigaco area job description
haha he lives in the South...but agreed. It's an apt term though...some people find the hardware and software, some people do the code...and other people collect "people"
So happy to see that tower of power that you’re sitting on there Anthony, and Suuuper excited to see that you’re working with Fixel Only recently found out about him at a Retro RGB Bob livestream for Fixel’s 3DO ODE. I’m really excited for the future of 3DO, and M2 development. Thank you Anthony and Fixel, and anyone else putting in the time. It’s going to be great!!
It’s gonna be fun moving forward for sure :)
Amazing work! It must be so satisfying seeing all this come together after so many years!
It’s been a blast. I’ve been hunting M2 for forever and we’re at the start of realizing the end goal. The thing is…what will I do when it’s done!? 😂
Wow! Kudos to you and everyone else involved in this community effort.👍
Thanks. We’ve been talking about it for basically all of 2022 it seems. Just needed to wait on a few things to fall into place
This is pretty technical, I had to watch twice to get a grasp of what you´re trying to do! Very ambitious project anyway, best of luck to you all!
Yeah I get that. A bit technical. I try to make it entertaining though :)
Thank you for your preservation. It is amazing that we are learning so much about this forgotten console in the year 2022.
Happy to do my part!
You should put a call out to all fans who work at GM dealerships. They can look through their junk piles to see if any of those kiosks survived.
One known kiosk with someone in our group came from a GM dealership. He had the contract to install and remove them...and kept one having no idea what it was till years later
It amazes me at where this hardware ended up; would never have expect this.
It def got used in some weird ways
I love your enthusiasm for this. It's really cool to see this piece of computing history preserved. I wonder what the folks who worked on writing M2 software and designing the M2 ASICs would think of this. It's interesting to think about how many tens of millions of dollars and countless man-years of combined effort were put into it (or any hardware platform of the time), only to be largely forgotten. For many engineers involved in the project, it would have been a significant part of their career. If I had been involved in M2, I would be very happy to see people digging into something I had spent so much time on.
I know some of them. The people who designed the hardware and some games. Everyone was pretty damn upset when it was cancelled
Truly living up to your name bringing us the "Esoteric" of Retro Collecting News.
Your responses to hater/troll/negative comments gave me a great chuckle.
Keep doing you! :)
Lol I just hope everyone realizes how damn hard it is to keep bringing this much esoteric content. One day I fear I may run out 😂
Oh my!!!! I was just checking out some old 3do games videos and did a search for M2 to see if there was a documentary or something , then I come across this. Mind. Blown. I was sooo disappointed when M2 got cancelled. This is great to see. Kudos ✌️
Plenty more coming. Stay tuned :)
Never would have guessed this from the picture, super rare stuff, amazing and great work in the community
Thanks. Appreciate it
Scanning all of that is a chore! but its a job for preserving history, A JOB FIT FOR A HERO LIKE YOU!
Much love & appreciation for all your work 🥰
Happy to do it :)
Very cool story and update, finally a full working version of polystars will be available for lucky owners of these machines!🙌
The end goal is the full arcade library on console hardware
Thank you so much for sharing, never followed the 3DO stuff but I love the gaming history, hopefully one day I can play on an M2
always fun to share :)
WOW! Really amazing VGE. Only you can help make this a reality. Would love to have one of these in the collection done by you bro. 8^)
Anthony..
It’s a group effort :)
Interesting video. The bios screen of es3 is a color pattern like the arcade with a huge black square in the center of the screen. A ball was bouncing inside the black square because they didn't know what to call the system at the time
The color bars followed M2 for a long time…even into the Konami M2 board
I'm quite familiar with the regular 3DO but these things I didn't even know existed
I’d say 99% of people have never heard of them or say they “never existed”…my fav is when someone said they don’t exist in a video where I was showing one off
Congrats on getting Polystars run on FZ35S hardware! Maybe an interesting future video would be about what was done with the software to get to this point?
Once one game is fully finished I will explain the process. This was literally a cut in to an existing video so people could see what was going on / those who own the hardware could play it!
That or you can join our discord and talk there :). I'm mostly online and can answer questions
i only learned about the m2 a few weeks ago - goddamn i love the design of the fz21!
It’s an awesome design. Wholly unique
First of all, I LOVE the cat. Second, great video! 🚗🚙😻
Haha glad you enjoy the cat pen!
I actually love cat pen and all the little pointers I actually kinda wanna find cat pens for myself lol
Just google “cat pen” and it’ll show up
When this becomes a consolized m2 arcade supergun basically, you should upload full gameplay, camera on the tripod videos of all the games.
Haha but I already have direct captures of them all on my channel
Excellent, I can't wait to use this thing! You mention seeing as high as 2500, mine is 3068.
Oh you have one eh? Try and get in touch with me on Twitter or Discord. Would love to chat
What VGE said, we are trying to collect M2 serials in an attempt to quantify how many were made.
Seemingly lots
Fixel does amazing work and is a top bananna IMO.
Great work everyone! :)
He’s a cool dude
I know this probably won't be anywhere near possible but if this became available on MiSTer along with the PC-FX and the Virtual Boy I would love that because I would be able to experience all of this and also the preservation aspect is really important imo
This would be too heavy of a lift for MiSTer. Well just beyond the LEs. But we have discussed reverse engineering the hardware and what that would entail. So never say never…but this is also NOT me saying we will do it lol
Maybe we will get a more powerful FPGA in about a decade or two that could lift that burden but for now I'll probably just watch that, sadly I'll have to wait to play Tobe! Polystars
I mean I’m sure the FPGA that could fit it exists now…just if you ignore pricing
Yeah the price is the big thing and I don't think we will get a MiSTer like device for an FPGA of that size for a decade or so maybe 5 years at the least but that's being optimistic. Sadly economics plays a role in FPGA project development
5-10 I’d bet
Great work as always, just wanted to ask what kinda of scanner do you have to scan and digitize the Konami and M2 stuff
I've been looking into getting a flatbed scanner myself so I can digitize and preserve some obscure items I have but I have no real idea where to start looking
Some random HP job. Nothing fancy
Waahoo! You are holding collector M2 flyers 😃
As for me, I would have liked Mr Kenji Eno to finish this magnificent D2 and play it, because I must admit that the theme of the Dreamcast version attracted me less.
Thank you for keeping this M2 material which is very precious to me and for continuing to work on it. 😍
I’d have rather had the M2 version of D2 as well if I could pick just one. D2 on Dreamcast is awesome…but old European castle with vampires genre was more to my liking
This is awesome to see! Congrats to fixel and the team for making this possible! I wonder if the other arcade games would run on the FZ-21 at all, since they use 16MB of RAM.
I will touch on that in a later video but…it’s seemingly going to potentially be good news on that front :)
Amazingly most of the memory is required for sound server! And i'm currently coding the replacement for it that will not hog so much memory.
Will be fun to talk about that once it’s ready
@@fixelsan Happy to hear it! Best of luck on the rewrite :)
I don’t care what people say about Felix…I think he’s alright!
What!?! The cat pen is dope!
Tell that to the two threatening emails I got lolol (I agree. cat pen goes nowhere)
Don't forget the arcade fz1 3do unit. It has a completely different bios. The one that runs shootout at old Tucson, orbatak and Beavis and Butt-Head. The unit even has a upgraded CD ROM drive.
I’ve been trying to acquire a dump for a bit. Progress pending
Exciting times 🥂
Really is!
The M2 seems to be between the PS1 and Dreamcast in performance.
Basically right on the money
You have really unique channel on RUclips 👍
Thanks. Appreciate that! I try to keep it very interesting
This is incredible
A fun time for sure!
Amazing.
👍
Your M2 collection is stellar my guy. The fz-21 obviously looks the best being a traditional console but the fz-35 seems to have the most compatibility and features as of the time you posted this. I'd love to have one of these but, as you've already mentioned, good luck finding one and paying for it. Btw, how do you control games on the fz-35? Can you hook a 3DO controller into the "controller" port on the back or do you need to use a mouse and keyboard?
They can still be found. Not cheaply but I've seen six sell in 2022. You can use a standard 3DO controller on the FZ-35. Port it around the back
@@VideoGameEsoterica That's badass. In theory, you could probably even use a Super Nintendo controller using one of those SNES to 3DO converters.
If you don't mind me asking how much did you personally pay for these machines? I'd like to know where I stand if I wanted to try and get one of these but I'm having a hard time finding sold listings anywhere for this thing. Perhaps I'm just not looking in the right place...?
Variable. The FZ-35 was free. The FZ-21 was….not free lol. I try not to put prices on things as then people think that’s what they cost. Reality is it’s what someone wants to pay for it that day
@@SkyScourgeGod Sale prices for an FZ-35 have varied from below $500 to well above $1,000. Sale prices for FZ-21 have all been above $3,000 within the past two years. Though those are just sales I am aware of. Private sales outside of auction sites don't really get kept track of...
Seems about right because obv you’d know :)
I dunno I hear there are people in the UK you should send the console to so they can cover it. Free of charge, you just need to send it over.
Already mailed. I also put my wallet in the box as I heard they were desperate for cash
Bravo!
Thanks!
i’ve heard that story about the xbox. i believe i heard it from the guys that worked on it in a discord live stream from those guys, i believe some of them initially started with working on xband, and webtv. The discord stream was in an x-band group. Great content! btw, i love pointer. I wish more people would use one over their hands / fingers. it’s easier to see, and stays out of the way.
Eventually I will talk about the Xbox connection. Sometime in 2023
Amazing video. I'm going to test the polystar demo. Did you try a hot swap with the original Polystar?
No. Wouldn’t work though. 1) opening the drive sends a reset command and 2) even if that worked each level load would send calls to do something that only the new build in the link would allow for
@@VideoGameEsoterica the driver can be disassembled and the hot swap can be performed just after the first loading milliseconds, just like Sega Saturn disc per example. It is just my theory I don't know if it can work but I'll try. 🤷🏻♂️
@@Hackinside That's not as simple - DIPIR (Disc Insert Process Interrupt Request) is combination of hardware and software in ROM. We can't change that on every FZ35/FZ21 out there
Easier to deal with in software
Hey, I read through all the comments hoping to see some mention about Disruptor by Insomniac Games(I learned from your other video that it was released for the M2 first, great video btw).. I don't suppose since then any of the team have been able to source the actual game? That was one of my favorite and first PS1 games to buy. Keep up the great work!
No I have no leads on any M2 disruptor builds sadly
@@VideoGameEsoterica No worries, thanks for getting back to me, will write up here if I see anything, however something's telling me if there's any info to be got, we'll all be watching it on your channel! lol
Keep up the great work 👌
Plenty more M2 coming soon :)
Are you kidding with the cat pens?!,finally i found them because you show them! Now I will buy one for me, kawaii desu gel pen
Haha gotta get one! It’s all the rage
AWESOME! Finally, now I can hook up my 3DO M2.
oh wait
😂 I know. Still limited user base
Thank you for doing all this. I always viewed the 3do collector community as somewhat toxic but you’ve done a lot change that.
Nobody involved in our little group of 3DO projects could ever be described as that type of collector. Half the reason I started this channel was to show how much fun it is to share things freely and have a good time :)
There's only a handful of fz-35s units out there... I sold my Evil Night Boards last year. I'm dying to play again lol
Why’d you sell?
Had bills to pay, only sold them for $250..... boards were mint, and the suicide battery was socketed so I could've popped another one on whenever it died :( I hate myself for doing it but we needed to pay the mortgage.
Ouch. Why didn’t you hit me up? I’d have given it a good home and sold it back to you when you wanted it (at par). Next time message me
Exelent video and amazing hardware you have there man.
What about FM Towns Marty, do you have one unit of it in your possecion now?
Lol looking over my shoulder? I have a 30 minute Towns hardware and games showcase for next Friday. It was going to be today but I swapped it for this as M2 was ready for the spotlight again
@@VideoGameEsoterica 👍
Should be fun!
Maybe this is silly... But have you tried any sort of swap trick? Where you boot off of the devkit dump CDR, then you swap to the retail disc for it to load the assets. Not that that would solve any driver issues, but may allow for loading of otherwise broken assets.
Yeah def not gonna be doing that to the drive lol. I break it…not like we have a big stock of replacement parts
@@VideoGameEsoterica Of course. Just curious if it would be as easy as simply hitting eject on it, having the motor spin down like normal, and putting in a new disc during play. Not any sort of Saturn style stop the motor and trick the system during boot. More like VibRibbon where the program is loaded into memory, and you simply swap the disc. I understand not wanting to mess up one of very few pieces of M2 hardware floating around.
No based on how the hardware functions you’d have to try it Saturn style
So will this M2 system get a physical release? Is it an upgrade for the 3DO or a standalone system.
No. Maybe FPGA one day in the far future
The M2 content is awesome, I honestly never realized how much history it actually had, and P.S. just ordered a pack of cat pens on Amazon
Cat pen purchased!
@@VideoGameEsoterica I regret nothing!
Nor should you :)
Hey mate, are you planning on bringing the entire console to market or just a specific part to existing owners?
No decisions have really been made as to how we might proceed really
When i was aged 18 I hearded all about 3DO's NEXT console, but after a while canceled now 48, finally at least a video.
30 years...ago wow
I’ve got tons of videos on M2. Check the playlists
@@VideoGameEsoterica will definitly subscribe too
@LeChucky 👍
"finally bringing it to market" lol wow. Never thought I'd see that. When is it coming to MiSTer :P
Never. The FPGA wouldn’t be capable of running M2. Doesn’t mean M2 FPGA will never happen though
Exciting news!
You can take advantage of it too!
@@VideoGameEsoterica Makes it extra exciting
Exactly!
can it run existing original 3do games? I remember they were hoping the performance in the doom port would be better once the m2 released.
We are looking into it. Possibly? Undetermined
I feel like stuff like this should be donated to a computer/video-game museum to be carefully preserved. On the M2, with all the delays, even if it had been released I have a feeling it would have been quickly eclipsed by the Dreamcast and PS2 like the 3DO and the PS1.
That’s what I am doing here; preserving this hardware and showcasing it. You’ll see a lot more M2 content online from me collecting it then you would if I boxed it all up and dropped it off at a museum where it would sit on display doing nothing. That’s my opinion (in a nice way)
@@VideoGameEsoterica Ah, I guess I should have said A M2 unit should be preserved in a museum, I think you’re doing good work.
Haha ooh. I read it as give all my stuff away lol
Does this mean if someone has an m2 based arcade machine that it might be possible to convert it to a console form
Potentially in the future yes
It’s quite a lot easier to find those m2 based arcade boards, even though I never find the cabinets, so you could probably profit greatly from it, make custom printed cases n stuff. Also that pci video card you showed looked massive, is that just the video card used in an m2 or is it actually doing something else? I ask because I have the FM Towns PCI card, a bizarre rarity that lets me run fm towns games on socket 3/5/7 boards, has part of the fm towns on the card w the vga
It’s not a small card but it’s not quite massive either. Bigger than usual for the time
I wished the M2 would have came out, same with the Hyper NG64 to give Sony, Nintendo, Sega more competition in the 90s. However with all the delays, by the time it could have came out you essentially had the Dreamcast.
Same. But obviously I feel that way lol
Should really send this over to Lady Decade so she can get it more attention...
lolololol...lets mail it all to them!
@@VideoGameEsoterica Don’t bother. If it’s a lucrative topic, she’ll probably just swipe the footage.
Wonder how many downvotes I’ll get for saying this
As many as I will. They’ve taken tons of content from me without permission
Instead of patching the games, I wonder if it would be possible to write a "unibios" that would allow arcade software to run unmodified on kiosk/console, and vice versa?
Possibly. But does anyone want to start changing bios in rare console hardware? Safer / easier to just change the game builds
@@VideoGameEsoterica I think the more interesting use case would be changing out the BIOS on the arcade boards to let it run software that was encrypted to run on the FZ-21, since that hardware is apparently less rare. Something like that plus Fixel's upcoming PATA-to-SD adapter would likely be necessary to make a Konami M2 multi-game menu anyways, which I suspect is something that lots of arcade collectors WOULD want.
Maybe that’s been talked about :)
Cat pen HYPE! 🐱
Gotta love cat pen!
Not ide, it was the power for some drives !
This implies we can make Disruptor VR real
If only I could find it if it exists
Makes no sense someone would seriously send you threatening E-mails. Fuckem..., this is amazing work by you guys! This is absolutely huges news!
Haha people are weird
Hello, what is a good Chasis to put a 3DO M2 Arcade board in?
Like a cab you mean? Anything candy
@@VideoGameEsoterica An ATX case work? :) Or would an HTC case be better? :]
Oh I see. The hole pattern won’t line up. You’d have to mod it
@Video Game Esoterica oh, IC.. It is best to get a case with a removable motherboard tray then so it can easily be worked on. Hopefully, there are tutorials on this .
Drill new holes, mount with standoffs. You can extend the ribbon cable and four pin power cable for the cd rom drive and just mount it in a bay. Wouldn’t be hard
You could try contact ex Atari developer Ed Rothberg as he has developed some M2 games that were unreleased and may still have the code. He discusses it in a good interview in EDGE magazine issue 370.
I've talked with Ed. He is the reason we have IMSA Racing
will you translate the five konami m2 arcade games into english before porting them to your console version of the 3DO M2 for the western audience, when will this console be released, and will sony, ea (electronic arts), and konami get involved in this big project of yours
No translations but they are basically all in English. No involvement…just us
It has been 84 years…
Since?
@@VideoGameEsoterica Titanic meme.
Meaning it has been a long ass time since I heard M2, a successor to the 3D0. I’m that old to remember.
Haha ooooh. Now I get it
so is this just an one system project or will there be multiple of these consoles?
The end plan is for it to run on FZ-35/21
@@VideoGameEsoterica nice looking forward to it. hopefully everything goes well.
It’ll take a bit but it’ll happen :)
Omggg, you said this is being bring to market, you mean an emulator? Because I would love to be able to play Evil Night again....
It’s like the most CASUAL of poking at the idea
@VideoGameEsoterica omg dude.... if this is done, anyone could play them with one of those wireless HD light guns on windows. I'm $hitting myself just thinking about it! 🤤
It's interesting hardware that's for sure.
Super interesting. Glad we can give it a library and realize its home console potential
Interesting how Konami embraced it they barely supported the 3do.
But Snatcher and Policenauts are good two games to have.
Konami loved PowerPC hardware and releasing new arcade platforms every year. M2 was basically a gift to them…same foundational architecture on the CPU side they were used to and a low cost / high performance part on the graphics side
Right under Konami M2 on System 16 is
"Konami Power PC Based"
Every time I go down the Konami Arcade Rabbit Hole I find something I never heard of.
That’s a bit of a misnomer entry. Battle Vision is battle tryst and skiers high was running on GTI Club hardware apparently. Possibly an enhanced version but unsure as nobody has ever found the game. Only showed up at an arcade show then never saw release
Any video of the GM discs? Thanks
No I’ve never captured them. Painfully boring lol
@@VideoGameEsoterica Lol too bad, Was hoping for some nice real time car renders.. Sounds like a Nuon enhanced movie DVD set...
It’s basically just movies playing. No real renders. Hence how boring it is
@@VideoGameEsoterica yep, maybe used for some boring "enhanced" menus beyond the standard DVD movie format...
Haha nailed it

I know current FPGA probably couldn't support this, we should work on perserving this.
We are preserving it daily :)
How do you have an M2? It was never released. The rollout was cancelled. Somehow you have two of them
I have 14 lol. It did release. Just not as a game console but as an industrial appliance for home design and other training software. Plus an arcade board
Is so wild that a failed console hardware ended as a kiosk, when there sure had to be cheaper options available.
That football game looks meh compared to Sega's Virtua Striker 1.
Panasonic paid for the hardware...they were certainly going to try to recoup that investment!
The M2 is Very similar to a sega model 3 or a dreamcast. if it had arrived when it was announced it would have been ahead of the PS1 and blown the doors off of the entire industry,
Yes had this come out fall 96 against Saturn and PS1 it would be the dominant console for three years in North America.
@@VideoGameEsoterica I was so excited I was even saving up the 400$ they said it would cost.
Costs a bit more now 😂 so dumb they cancelled it
I'm a cat pen enjoyer
99.9% of the audience is!
I believe there was an arcade beavis and butthead game being developed on this hardware. Can we find that please? And thanks.
That was for OG 3DO, not M2. One of the prototype cabs is about thirty minutes from me
@@VideoGameEsoterica I’m jealous. Maybe somehow it will be converted to OG 3do someday.
Never know
😮😮😮 x Infinity
Hopefully more news on this soon
What a shame that the M2 console was cancelled. I genuinely think they finally had a good console...
Would have been a great console!
Stone age gamer make replica M2 and Indy devs make community make games. And what to do if it has a expansion or Ext port Am i crazy or dose Any body Agree with me about indy console this old with new.
Extremely hard if not impossible. There really isn’t a good way to use the expansion port on an FZ-1 for this
Whaaaat?! The xbox360 hardware is somehow related to the defunct Panasonic M2 tech?😲 Come on, don't leave us hanging!😩 I used to look at all the 90's game mags talking about how superior the M2 console was supposed to be compared to the competition. (I wanted to buy one.) But, maybe it was all hype..
I’ll do that video in 2023 :)
@@VideoGameEsotericaThank you, looking forward to it! After closer inspection of the M2 board in your video.. It's the processors isn't it? -The M2 and the Xbox 360 share the same power PC CPU's?
It’s a lot more than that ;)
@@VideoGameEsoterica Okay, now you've peeked my curiosity.🤔 I'm really interested now. Have a Merry Christmas and thank you for the videos. I'm really enjoying them. Especially the ones on the M2 technology.

MOAR PENS!!!!!
All the pens!
Have you thought about making an actual console? Like fpga to replace to the proprietary chips? If so and you could make a bill of materials I know some people who can help me source those parts and I know a guy who has about 5,000 pc dvd rom drive that he can't get rid of he would give em to me for free
We’ve turned the idea around but nothing concrete
@Video Game Esoterica okay, any idea where I could find a BOM
We don’t have one per say just because the system is just basically comprised of customs with two off the shelf PowerPC 602s. But if you want an invite to the 3DO Discord lmk
@Video Game Esoterica I'm in the discord already but I can make some calls about the 602 power pc but don't get your hopes up it a VERY rare chip
Yes it barely got used for anything. M2 and satellites
Cannot believe it!!!!
Can you sell me a M2 with Polystars working?
Or put me on a list. Even if you are only ever selling one, 2 or 3 systems. I know this is not your core business. Just want to be on that list of buyers
Now or in the future? Not interested in original software, just original hardware
RGB output or RGB modded preferably.
