  • In this video I talk about why I'm moving away from mirrorless cameras, my Canon RP, and back towards DSLR cameras. While I can see the advantages of a mirrorless camera system I still much prefer using a DSLR camera like my Canon 1D Mark 3.

After spending a 30 plus year career looking at models through a optical viewfinder, I tolerated a digital viewfinder exactly one day..... no joke... if you are shooting videos, get yourself a mirrorless, but still guys need an optical viewfinder for all the reasons you mentioned and especially looking at the real world rather then a digital version of it..... who needs that aggravation...

I tried a few mirrorless cameras but I couldn't get on with the EVF, it feels like I'm looking at a security camera and there's a weird disconnect between reality and what I'm looking at in the EVF. It's not enjoyable and feel like it gives me eye strain too.

Yep! I really hope the pendulum swings back to the middle and companies will decide to still offer DSLR options along side the mirrorless. At the moment it seems like a lot of companies are just moving full steam ahead with mirrorless. On the positive side there are lots of high end DSLR’s as well as EF/F mount glass on the use market for great prices.

Hi Chris I can't comment on Canon mirrorless but I switched to Fuji mirrorless about 8 years ago and don't regret it one bit. I love the EVF on my XT2 and XT3. In the earlier models there was a slight lag but in the later models that is practically non existent. Obviously battery life isn't as good but I just carry half a dozen 3rd party batteries (£10 each) just to be sure I won't run out. On a cold day I can get through 3-4 batteries but I still prefer the handling and overall user friendly system of the Fuji. Each to their own though and I can understand those that still prefer to shoot with DSLR's

    • @ChrisBaitson

Thanks for the comment Paul. It all comes down to personal preference and there’s no right or wrong answer. If I didn’t still have the DSLR cameras it probably wouldn’t be an issue but given the choice I seem to be taking the 1D/7D out a lot more recently.

I'm still using the canon 5D Mark 2 that I bought new and my canon 7d with a 400mm lens. I do own 2 small sony cameras the a6000, and the a6500 but I just love the color science from canon plus I have a few pieces of L glass that I love. In the end it's all personal preference and if you can afford the mirrorless system.

Well said. It’s personal preference all the way. Given the choice I seem to be picking up my 7D or 1D a lot more lately. I’m not saying mirrorless cameras are bad, they’re great, but there’s still something about mirrors and prisms for me that I find a big draw.

  • @PhilippeOrlando

For me it's a question of price. I do think the recent mirrorless lenses are probably better than DSLR cam lenses, but by how much? Can you really see it? Can it really make a difference in real life, for a non-pro like me? The price to pay for FF mirrorless simply can't be justified for the marginally better quality. I have a GH5, which is mirrorless, and a D700, and for photos, I rarely reach for the GH5 anymore, unless I need an articulated screen. There is NO way 99% of most people will take advantage of the small increase in quality offered my mirrorless lenses. Besides, how judicious is it to spend the amount of money asked by Sony and others to go FF with a mirrorless system when most people will be blown away by what comes out of a D750. Does anybody really need a camera "better" than a D750?

  • @CourtneyVictoria

Interesting thoughts! I haven't owned a decent mirrorless camera for photography, pretty happy with my DSLR atm, but when I come up to switch my camera out in the future I will probably consider a mirrorless. The only thing that would put me off would be the price of having to replace my lenses. The battery life is a good point, I already feel as though I carry a million spares with me for my vlog camera. I don't have to think too much about my Nikon battery life. Nice video, not easy to get out atm for some outdoor shoots with this horrid weather.

Mirrorless camera tech is amazing and it does have the little quality of life features that make them special. But for me, personally, I just prefer using my DSLR cameras. I think if I solely owned mirrorless it wouldn’t even be an issue for me but when I have the option it makes it tough.

Really enjoyed this video and I can definitely relate, having replaced my Canon 5D (original) with an RP, and using it alongside an 80D. I love the RP especially in low light and with prime lenses (via an EF adapter) but I find my EF 24-105L tips forward as you say and RF lens are ridiculously expensive at the moment. I expected my RP to be my go-to lens for family days out but it's the 80D that wins every time, and the RP is more for when I'm focused on the photography.

    • @ChrisBaitson

My RP has recently became my video camera and I’ve shifted towards my 1D & 7D more and more. I think the benefits of mirrorless play more towards a video camera than a stills camera. Stopped using my Fuji GFX. Had it for two years and have grown to hate it. I've gone back to my D800 and I have missed it so much. Looking through the OVF is far superior than crappy mirrorless. I can get better results on my D800 than I eved did on my GFX and it's far more fun using a DSLR. I also find the DSLR more expressive to use. You feel like your are part of the world looking through an OVF. People just keep buying into the marketing crap camera manufacturers keep pushing to us.We never needed mirrorless. It's slow as fuck, laggy and to be honest it's a bad technology I wish that was never invented. I'll keep buying used DSLR's s long as they are around. Mark my words. Its me again lols! I had an EOS M6 MKII through work for recording projects, they also had a Sony A7 II - Both cameras were very cramped with the controls, as a person with bigger hands, I virtually found the M6 unusable - as it drove me bonkers keep thumbing other controls on the back, no doubt a great Vlog camera but way to small for comfort for me, and although I could use my EF glass on the little M, it was unbalanced & handled horribly, The Sony was pretty much the same I found very very cramped grip, in fact my finger tips almost pinched between the lens barrel and the grip - again like the OLED add on viewfinder for the Canon M the image in my view was horrid, I much much prefer the optical viewfinder. Having the use of the newer tech above, made me really appreciate my wonderful 5D MKIII a gorgeous lump of a camera that's great to hold, with a optical viewfinder top info LCD, and nicely spaced out controls

Yep I hear ya mate. I feel like I should be embracing mirrorless and i was the first to embrace it when the first olympus pen came out. But I got tired of low batteries, looking at a screen to capture photos, and lack of shallow depth. So I got a 6D and I loved it but it died recently and I had no choice but to go back to mirrorless again. I thought well I might as well get the best so I forked out nearly 10 grand for a r5 and all the bits and pieces I needed for it and I'm struggling to enjoy photography. I mean, its still big and ugly, (I thought the point of mirrorless was to reduce size), and the lenses are too expensive. Its the whole shooting experience too. I love looking through the lens. I mean thats what the lens is seeing, not an EVF. Battery life hasn't evolved either apparently, or the demands on them is too much. And the menus are more complicated etc etc etc.. Also, I cant seem to get perfect focus anymore. If at least i could focus a shot. Oh how I would love to find another 6D unopened box, wish I'd bought 5.

Hmm, it's horses for courses Chris. Personally I don't see the point in lugging huge bricks around. I have very big pockets for batteries and there are mirrorless cameras that don't need EVFs. My Fuji Xpro2 is a case in point and I prefer shooting with just the OV and histogram, especially if I'm using old Canon FD lenses. Admittedly I rely on the electronic overlay and focus peaking on the hybrid VF. Saves on batteries. Talking of batteries, I am awaiting delivery of the battery for my old analogue Canon A1, a 'proper camera'.

Totally agree Chris, I had the 1300d which was my first DSLR but had an accident a couple of years ago where I fell into a small stream, small but down a 10 foot embankment, all my gear was ruined. As I mainly shoot Street I went for the Fuji Xt3 with the insurance, I was looking to upgrade anyway but I’d been looking at the 90d since it was just a rumour but suddenly stopped, also the EOS R too, no idea why but I wish i hadn’t, didn’t think the RP was right for me though, don’t ask why. Don’t get me wrong, the Xt3 is great for my Street Photos but I just have not got along with it, never felt comfortable and as you say, the lens prices and the battery power really are sticking points, unless that’s the budget you have, I don’t.
I’ll more than likely stick with Mirrorless for my Street stuff but not sure I’ll stick with the Xt3, if I could I’d go for the R6 or the Sony A7iii, but with my low budget I’ll more than likely stick to Fuji but go for the XT4 as there’s some great prices at the minute for new so used should be even better.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 года назад +1

Yeah budget is a big part of how I do this. The Sony cameras are where you want to be for mirrorless. They got it right out the gate.
