No, they did not kill a fox for the video. before filming, they sent out a tweet asking if anyone found a dead fox that they could film. They found this one at the side of the road. They filmed it over 30 days decaying. Also, the live fox is named Tod, he is trained. Tod was not harmed.

Do you ever watch something and sit there for five minutes completely stunned by what you have just seen? Then after those five minutes pass it all hits you at once? You find yourself crying because of the beauty of it all, that someone was able to understand something so important that you never knew you needed in the first place?

This always reminds me when I was in the moment of getting our dog put to sleep at the vet. As soon as the fox cries, it triggers some very powerful emotions in me and my heart cracks every time.
I interpret this as being about the disconnect between modern life and nature, and fear of death. When the film starts the man is at a crisis point feeling lost and alone, and I think that this is a comment on modern life due to the line about not thinking you could get lost "these days", as well as the contrast between the wild, countryside setting with the man's urban office-wear. He is out of touch with nature, concepts like life and death, and his life feels synthetic and hollow. He is afraid of being alone, and most of all afraid of death. When he meets the fox he is confronted by death - first he thinks the fox wants to attack and kill him, and then he realises that the fox is dying. He finds it terrifying but the wise snail convinces him to be brave and engage with the dying fox, which he does by providing it comfort as it dies. The fox decomposing shows the fox returning to the earth, it is natural and an inevitable part of life, and exposes his fear of death as unnatural. When he wakes up he has accepted death, and therefore accepted life. It is dark, but he looks up and sees beauty in life, nature and the universe, and, like the snail, is able to go on with calmly living.
(I had to type that out to make it clear in my own head - the meaning of this has been bugging me since I first saw it!)

My interpretation: I think the whole thing is a look into the soul of the main character. The snail symbolize "Hope"...the first glance into himself that makes him realize there's still beauty and light in him, even if it looks like a small flame...the meadow symbolize his wandering through his own self...the doubt, he's not sure who he is, why he's there & what his purpose is exactly...then when he finds the fox he sees a reflection of his own self being hurt & needy and learns that his compassion includes himself...he must not fight and hate against his pain because that means fighting and hating against himself, he must accept it in order to heal. Then when he falls asleep he finally embraces and accepts all of his parts (the hope, the doubts & the the pain) and when he wakes up the feelings are gone...and instead he sees beautiful bright stars...

Life can be so random. I was so sure I was going the right path and then in a split second, the world flips upside down. It sucks to know some of our problems can be so insignificant when compared to losing someone you love to natural causes, but when you invest all of your heart into a stranger, you risk the same pains as those of your closest loved ones. I wish there were signs pointing in the correct direction, without heartache on every road crossing, but I also wonder if such life is even worth living. I think this film is a look into Agent Bill Wilson's life after the prologue scene for The Dark Knight Rises... apparently he has lost his memory in the plane crash (but is otherwise uninjured) and wanders the fields, looking for an abstract concept he calls 'home'... perhaps the snail is a manifestation of his own psyche, a greater power that refers to him as 'little one' in an attempt to finally allow Wilson to come to terms with the fact that he's a small guy. I hope that Wilson doesn't return to the CIA after this, and that his experiences once (if?) he regains his memory urge him to retire into a serene, pastoral life such as what is pictured here. 9/10 Bravo Nolan

The part with the fox appearing and growling really shows a lot about life. I feel like the fox represents the guard we put up when dealing with all the fear and anxieties and to truly face them and grow from them, we have to let our guard down. Because it’s okay to be scared and not to know.

We have this mountain we call table rock in my city. It's a popular spot to watch the sunset and sunrise, also to see the entire downtown area. This song came on while I was watching the sunset and I never felt so connected with my surroundings. As the sky changed color, I sat and watched for hours, replaying this song. As the sun was finally going down I found my self tearing up because for the first time I discovered something truly beautiful.
The more I think about it, the more it appears this is an interpretation of CIA's journey in limbo after the plane crash.
Whereas CIA's saga started with him as a confident, hotheaded embodiment of Central Intelligence Agency concealing his insecurity, Little One is both humble and honest about his limitations. Dazed, he raises his unknowing eyes to beseech the heavens for guidance, as unaware of his surrounding sas he was when he first filed the flight plan but much more self aware. And yet he retains that essential spark of heroism, that drive to seek resolution even in the midst of a desolate waste.
Throughout the journey he meets embodiments of the adversity and allies he encountered in life. The snail, its help gratefully accepted, is essential to guiding CIA "home" as his loyal pilots were, and as a maternal figure (despite being a hermaphrodite) is at least as valuable a prize as Dr Pavel. Throughout their journey into the forest she encourages CIA to be brave, building up his shattered conviction. The fox embodies both Bane, growling to appear big, and CIA's own devotion to duty. He learns to show compassion to the fox's wounds, just as all men have internal wounds no matter how big they are. With the snail's help, he gets the fox on board even without anyone to call it in, trusting in his own resolve.
The final scenes deal with loss and acceptance. Again, we see CIA incapacitated by mysterious forces. Again, what was once a formidable figure is laid low and humbled-despite all of CIA's efforts. He is even abandoned by the snail, his guide, his hope. But when he awakens he gains newfound perspective and character, able to find his own way home without an external source of validation and without pretending to be an entire agency; he has been reduced from CIA to Bill Wilson, absolved of both the responsibilities and privileges of his past life. Like the plane, the fox is irrevocably damaged, and it takes great courage for Bill to come to terms with its death, accepting that his journey has no survivors. In short, by accepting and letting go of deep personal loss, Little One becomes a Big Guy, pulling off the mask of pretension in death despite the pain it entails.

Every time I watch this video, or even when I just listen to it...brings me to tears. Such a true and honest representation of life and our surroundings that almost everyone is able to relate to. We all experience feeling lost and desperate in our "inner voice" that is told by the man....and the inner voice or "higher power" that we yearn to hear, which is portrayed by the snail. Seriously so damn moving.

I love love love this film / video. It evokes such a sense of loss yet wonder, simplicity and deep, deep internal conflict. This film makes me feel alive and alone and small, yet one with the world.
That was the time when I was wandering through the forest for a few kilometers every summer night. That forest was between my village and my friend's. Those misty nights... Endless Sigur Ros on playlist. Moon and stars leading the way through the dark. Best time of my life.
Now I live in different part of planet. On a different continent. Unable to see my parents for 7 years already.
What happened to that forest? What happened to those summer nights? Why do things always have to change?
This would be forever in my heart. Forever.
This is so incredible good. To have such a great idea and film it must be immense talent. My interpretation is that the man just got out of a relationship and has become "lost". Whether the snail is in the same boat is hard to say, but im guessing so, because it found a partner in the end as well. The snail and the man help each-other find "home" or a sense of normality. The man eventually reaches the fox. Notice the dark lighting, the fear the man feels, it conveys dark emotions and sadness. The fox is wounded or broken, just like the relationship. With the help of the snail, the man finally has the courage to drag it out of the recesses of his mind and let it die for good (Why the fox is shown decomposing). After this the man is finally free, and the snail has finally met someone for itself, which is why they must part ways. A beautiful story of human relationships, our fears, and hope.

I have been this lost, but I was lucky enough to have found my way out.
I'm an English teacher and I show this to 11th graders after reading Thanatopsis and when they are studying Transcendentalism with Emerson and Thoreau and before Dead Poets Society. They watched it yesterday and today (hybrid teaching).
I cant believe it but this video has literally changed my life. I finally realized it brought on the start of my entire experience of my deeper understandings of the world, call it "spirituality" if you'd like. And now, years and years later, I finally understand, at least for me this video signifies the walk through what is known as the dark night of the soul, and revisiting it on this fateful night has been the most wondrous experience. Thank you Sigur Ros, thank you Nick Abrahams. You made the connection for me for a most trans formative time in my life. I hope this touched others hearts the way it has for me
You know that saying, "when one life ends, another begins." That's what I got from this one. The snail was lost. So Death inhabited his body to guide him to this guy who was gonna kill himself in the field. Then the snail guided the man to a poor fox who had been gravely injured. The man comforted the fox and eased his pain in Death. Guiding the snail (and the man) into new life.
It's saying we all die alone.

Wow this brings so many memories from the last time I was playing in a field just like this with my rescue dog. He was a Collie, and in fact I found a snail and took him back with me. It symbolized change for me. And we went back home ... not too much longer we had to move but so cool ♥️
