  • There were lots of different alternate manipulator arm attachments that Daleks used in Classic Who, including flamethrowers, seismic detectors and... sieves?

One note of interest here about the Power of the Daleks attachment. In the original story, the cattle prod unit is actually a simple piece of wall-mounted machinery. You can see this from the telesnaps, as well as being glimpsed in the final explosion shots of the Dalek Space Capsule from episode 6. It was made into a Dalek attachment in the animation for the sake of appearing more interesting.

Its always caught me off-guard how in the older episodes, daleks aren't afraid of literally manhandling people and throwing them off things.

Seeing a Dalek push Maxtible over was mildly shocking.

I imagine the electrode dish and seismic detector tools are now natural elements of sensory perception built into the modern daleks casings systems and/or now easily detected with a new who manipulator arm.

It's also a good characterization detail that it's nearly always the manipulator arm being replaced, and the only time they replace the blaster arm is in Death to the Daleks, when their blasters weren't working.

I wonder if there was ever a Dalek with two guns because well they are connected they always seem to have more personality than stuff like the Cybermen which makes sense as the evil Pepper Potts still have emotion just not the more positive ones like love

I've watched most all of the TV episodes dating back to 1963 and 2nd movie (Invasion of Earth). I haven't checked out comics and other Dalek stories. Question) Is there any pics or episodes that show the Daleks in the act of swapping arm attachments? I'd love to see how they did this (or was it just assumed that they could do this but how they did it was never covered?).

@@plantainsame2049 I've got some important questions and I hope someone can help me with them. I bought a couple of The History of the Daleks (Toy sets) not long ago. Each set contains two 5.5 inch plastic Daleks in them and they are completely assembled. Each set contains a pair of Daleks that suppose to be replicas of 2 of the Daleks that were in that particular series. (For example, Set #1 is representative of the 1963 series The Dead Planet. Set #2 is representative of the 1964 Invasion of Earth series. Set #3 is representative of the 1965 series The Chase, Set #4 is representative of the 1965 series The Dalek Master Plan, Set #5 is representative of the 1966 series Power of the Daleks, etc.) All 6 of the Daleks from the first 3 sets have right arms with plungers, As for Set #4, the Dalek with the black skirt and dome has a plunger arm, while the chrome dome Dalek has a right arm that is a torch. As for Set #5, both Daleks in this set look almost identical to the chrome dome Dalek of Set #4. Instead of having a "torch arm", the first of the two chrome dome Daleks of Set #5 has a plunger arm, whereas the second chrome dome dalek of Set #5 has an arm with a sieve attachment that was used for scooping up mutant daleks. Some sellers offer other replacement parts including various chrome domes (black, blue, silver), eyestalks, and even the black plastic bottoms that also contain the wheels.
I currently own sets #3 & #4 for a total of four 5.5" daleks. I know someone who wants to sell me Set #1 (1963 The Dead Planet set) at a really sweet price. However, this set is unusual in the fact it contains 2 identical chrome dome Daleks and both have plunger-style arms. Furthermore, these 2 chrome dome Daleks are almost identical to the chrome dome Dalek in set #3 which also has a plunger arm and the chrome dome dalek in set #4 which differs in that it has a torch arm. If I buy this set, I'll have 6 daleks (2 of the 6 being identical), and 4 of the 6 looking almost identical although 1 of these 4 would has a torch arm and the other 3 have plunger arms.
I've noticed that there are a few Ebay sellers that sell replacement arms for Daleks. A couple of them offer a fair number of different attachments including arms with plungers, guns, torches, sieves, etc. If I were to buy Set #1, I'd have a set of two identical daleks both with plunger arms. I'd be more inclined to buy this set of identical daleks if i could change out the plunger arm of one of the daleks with an arm with a sieve attachment. In other words, I'd like to remove the plunger arm of one of the two identical daleks and replace it with a sieve arm.
OK, I have a few questions. Your answers can be short. :)
      1) Does anybody have any experience working with these replacement arms? Are they quality parts or are they just junk that looks a bit like the original parts, but doesn't quite measure up to the original parts?
      2) Are these so-called "replacement arms" just meant to be visual props (part of your overall dalek display) or are they actual replacement parts that I could use to replace and repair a broken arm on one of my model daleks in the event the arm was actually damaged?
      3) I have examined the arms on my various (dalek) models. Each arm has a ball joint that fits in a designated box that is part of the dalek. I've tugged on the arms, but they seem to fit inside he box rather snuggly. Is it even possible to remove an arm from a dalek model without damaging the arm or the dalek (the box on the dalek that the ball-joint resides in)? If it is possible, how would one go about doing this?
      4) In the event of a broken arm that needs to be replaced permanently with a new arm, I suppose one could crush the ball of the arm (since it is already damaged) and it would then fall out. However, is there a means to install a brand new replacement arm without damaging the new replacement arm or the box on the dalek?
I know this was rather long, but I wanted to explain the entire situation in the event someone might have an idea or suggestion that I haven't thought of. Thanks for taking the time to read this and help me!

The one element from the New Paradigm Daleks that I’d love to see incorporated into standard Daleks going forward is the “storage rack”. The grey slats on the back of the casing is actually supposed to be a bunch of stored, folded-up tools which can be deployed by sliding up a grey track and around into place at either the gunstick mount or the manipulator arm mount. It was basically supposed to be a Dalek Swiss-Army-knife. This would mean Daleks could easily and quickly swap their attachments in the field, so if a Dalek needs a flamethrower, seismic detector, cutting torch, kinetic gun, scoop, claw arm, or whatever, it could have the tool at hand right then and there without having to call in a specialized unit

The Curse of the Daleks on stage featured a couple of different appendages too. A silver cup and saucer type affair with a bulb inside for activating light-sensitive controls in the Dalek city. Also a streamlined lobster-like silver claw. Both can be spotted at a distance in the second Dalek movie, thanks to the stage props' re-use in that. The claw arm can be seen in more detail, on the Dalek Jill Curzon posed with in her publicity photo session for the film.

There are different claw/hand units too... The Paradigm Daleks have examples. And from one early Dr Who episode (probably now lost) a weird five finger claw... It was seen only Briefly on a Dalek operating a Hand wheel type Valve mechanism in a control centre... I think aboard a Dalek spaceship. But as I say the appearance was brief. Ther has to be a whole load of tools; as, deom the "Blue Collar" Dale3k shows; "Worker" drones exist and probably have many tools. And they may even have two or mnore appendages fitted to "Modified " shoulder sections. They cant always trust slaves to do the job properly.

I wanna see more of the plunger being used for opening doors and other fine motor skills like picking things up or entering melee with others. Like what if a Dalek needs to detach something on its dome with it. Again I’m sure they can do this, but it would be nice to see how

Is it just me or did it feel like that the chipnel era was trying really hard to remove the dark plunger from their appearance as each dalek encounter and that story had a odd claw achment instead . Personally I like the plunger but I would understand if they wanted to phase it out but The claw attachment they chose to use instead it's so odd and messes with the shape profile And silhouette of the dalek .

    As I recall … ?
The New Paradigm Daleks were supposed to have alternative manipulators built in to the box arrangement at the back of the skirt.
It’s a shame were never got to see these.
