That body type (pear shaped) is literally just due to your bone size/length/width. It can be accentuated by fat distribution, but fat distribution is about as random as your bone size is. So, yeah, really odd to call her fat when she's not fat?

My guess is that the writers meant for Violetta to be fat, but then someone higher up was like, "she can't be too fat though." And so they made her just have big hips without changing anything in the script.

    • @aiiiia9971
      @aiiiia9971 8 месяцев назад +216

Yeah I agree it might have been an issue of conflict between different players in parts of the production process. It reminds me of an interesting recurring issue in a cartoon I very much love (Dan Vs) where the deteragonist is often not drawn as looking overweight but the writing suggests that he is. Occassionally it shows but not really. There was also a scene where someone was commenting on bad handwriting, but the handwriting itself actually looked fine.
There has to be good communication and agreement between the writers, character designers, artists, animators, etc of a project or you get weird issues like this.

I'm guessing they keep calling Violetta "fat" as a way to sort of make a desirable quality look like a flaw. It keeps the female character humble and therefore accessible (in the realm of imagination), plus makes a flimsy cover-up for the fact the creators drew her sexy on purpose.
It's kind of like when people make a character whose flaw is "too smart/bookworm." They may sometimes suffer social consequences for it in their world, but it's obviously a good quality and is interpreted as such by the viewers, too.

0:18 This film was meant to be an animated telenovela, broken down into 40-minute episodes to understand the overall plot and characters.
0:28-8:09-10:56-17:13-18:58-19:50-29:04 The fat shaming comes from the 1950s-2000s where people would call those who were not fat "fat" as a form of bullying. They are referring to Violeta Herrera's butt. I think that the reason that they call her fat is because Dago García is used to television dramas and could not really use any real insults due to the fact this is basically a film for children. Violeta being called "fat", "orphan" and "troublemaker" does not take anything away from the story. It adds more weight to its message of purpose being relative and that you must decide for yourself who you are and what life means to you. Everyone in this film is being told that they are someone that they are not. They are all weighed down by so many labels. Gabriel and Kid Pantaleon love the arts but are pinned down under the weight of needing to carry on their family's cock fighting legacy. Even Emiliano turns out to not be a bully and jerk, and the whole film was set up in a way where you are supposed to dislike him. Maestra is actually Violeta's grandmother, not a teacher.
8:18-29:12-29:23-29:47-32:27 If you know how chickens live and communicate with each other, this film has its accurate touch. From only the strong male becoming most of the chicks to killing each other. I know of a tiny hen who is strong enough to beat a rooster if she does not want to get "intime", but in this flock, she is the only one. If you know this, this film makes a little bit more sense.
8:45-13:42 Gabriel Dangond's father is named Porfirio Dangond, not Porifio Dangond.
9:17-13:09-13:28-15:03-22:02-30:00 Claudio Padron's name is a reference to William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Dago García and María Mercedes Sánchez changed some of the family relations and the order of events a little and they removed some events while adding others, but there is definitely a little Hamlet in this story. In Hamlet, the character Claudius poisons Hamlet's father and marries his mother. Then Hamlet spends the story first trying to figure out if it is true, and then trying to figure out what to do about it. Claudius also sets up a fight at the end of the story between Hamlet and another character wherein the plan is to put poison on the other fighter's blade in order to kill Hamlet even if he just scratches him. But in Hamlet, Claudius was Hamlet's uncle. He murders his own brother and marries his newly widowed sister-in-law, becoming Hamlet's stepfather, which might explain why the story in this film includes an element that might seem semi-incestuous, but is really not. A chick leaving her compassionate loyal mate for a wealthy one is also something that lines up with reality. Pretty much everybody dies at the end of Hamlet, and that might explain why the climax of this film treats death more casually than one might expect.
12:23-12:25-12:57-26:18 I get why the translator, Miko, chose to use the word "chicken" in this scene, but "chicken" is the translation of the Spanish word "gallina", which refers only to female chickens/hens, aside from its shared secondary meaning. So basically Emiliano Padrón was calling Gabriel a "girl" and a "coward" at the same time.
17:03-17:27-23:04-23:10-28:21-31:26-31:29-34:13 Gabriel's mother Alicia Dangond remarried and Violeta is Claudio's niece. There is literally no family blood between Gabriel and Violeta, because they have just met and step-cousins come from completely different family trees. Them hooking up would be no different than somebody having sex with their spouse. It is quite easy to gain the affection of someone who already knows you than to gain it from a complete stranger. The step-cousin romance stuff is relatively common in soap operas and family dramas.
19:50 Accents in this film are kind of exaggerated. Like the chicken boy can't finish most sentences without going for the accent, which leads to some weird end of sentences and lines in general.
22:46 To be fair, motorcycles are a lot more common in Colombia than they are in the United States of America. It is not just the tough guys that ride them there.
24:43 Whistling in Latin American countries at sporting events and stuff is the equivalent to booing, so the audience was actually upset in that one scene that you mentioned.
31:14 A typical telenovela differs from your American/European type of soap opera, because it actually has a planned ending. Whether it is 100, 150 or 250 episodes, there is a fixed ending. Usually, when the two protagonists actually end up together, and all the villains are either dead, in jail, or turned good meanwhile. There is no dragging the plot through decades with most of the cast being recast or replaced.

Two funny things that Crítico Histérico commented in his review of this movie and stood in my mind:
    1) Claudio's name might be a reference to Foghorn Leghorn, who's called Gallo Claudio (Rooster Claudio) in Latin America and it's kind of a beloved character here, probably because of the dubbing.
    2) The design of Violeta's stalker friend (whose name I can't remember now) makes no sense at all since he wears a fraternity jacket. Such things aren't common in Latin America and Crítico Histérico pointed it as an example of Latinamerican productions trying to mimic USA culture due to a lack of sense of cultural identity.

Claudio’s name probably is a reference to Foghorn Leghorn. Sometimes symbols refer to multiple things. But one of the things that Claudio’s name is definitely a reference to is William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
I’m not kidding and it’s not a stretch. They changed some of the family relations and the order of events a little and they removed some events while adding others, but there’s definitely a little Hamlet in this story. (Also, The Lion King did the same thing.) In Hamlet, the character Claudius poisons Hamlet’s father and marries his mother. Then Hamlet spends the story first trying to figure out if it’s true, and then trying to figure out what to do about it. Claudius also sets up a fight at the end of the story between Hamlet and another character wherein the plan is to put poison on the other fighter’s blade in order to kill Hamlet even if he just scratches him.
But in Hamlet, Claudius was Hamlet’s uncle. He murders his own brother and marries his newly widowed sister-in-law, becoming Hamlet’s stepfather, which might explain why the story in this movie includes an element that’s semi incestuous but not really. Also, pretty much everybody dies at the end of Hamlet, and that might explain why the climax of this movie treats death more casually than one might expect

Also, when Gabriel's step brother calls him a "gallina" it's because they're roosters, and gallina is what we call hens, so he's essentially calling Gabriel a girl, still mighty fucked up in that context lmao.

I feel like this movie could've worked if the writers just made a few changes.
    1. Have Gabriel's parents still be married at the start of the movie and make the bad guy obsessed with his mom. Then, a few months after his dad's death, Gabriel's mom can't pay the bills anymore so Claudio swoops in and offers to let them stay at his house free of charge. This not only make his plan to murder Gabriel's father makes more sense, it also removes any weirdness of Gabriel and Violetta's romance.
    2. There's an underlying theme of this movie regarding gender norms and how bullshit they are but it doesn't go all the way with it. Like spark says, Violetta is frequently criticized by the bad guys for not acting like a hen, but the movie never establishes how a hen should act. Now, I know nothing about Colombian gender norms but I feel like one idea for how to do this would be that, instead of the stupid fat-shaming thing, people kept calling out Violetta for being high energy and free-spirited rather than prim and demure and that a proper lady wouldn't be dancing like that to that kind of music. Violetta, understandably, would tell them to shove it but would have no allies outside of some fair-weather friends and the Nice Guy in the letterman jacket. Then when she meets Gabriel and criticizes him for crying, she could apologize to him for that after finding out why he was crying and support his love of playing piano.
    3. Instead of ending the movie with a cock fight, Gabriel and Violetta plan to steal Claudio's evil plan folder. Claudio can hold an engagement party after getting the mom to agree to marry him. Then during the party, Gabriel could distract everyone with his piano playing while Violetta takes on the guards watching Claudio's office with her dancing skills. That way, the protagonist can use the things they love doing and were criticized for to reveal the truth and send Claudio to jail. This would tie in with the themes of deconstructing gender norms and make Gabriel confident enough to do what he loves without worrying about criticism while Violetta finally has someone who genuinely supports her and what she loves doing.
There's a nugget of a good story here but it's bogged down by meandering plot points and nonsensical character motivations.

The whole step-cousin romance stuff is relatively common in the soap opera and family drama TV series, so I honestly didn't even bat an eye at it when you pointed it out. Hell, just look at anime and eastern dramas, and you'll find them everywhere.
And at least for this movie, they aren't blood related nor had the time to develop familial bonds to begin wth. They are literally just strangers forced under one roof and left it immediately. If anything, their romance is more sensible than a lot of the insane stuff in the movie that make even less sense.

I get that rock and metal are both portrayed as evil a lot, but I grew up with it, and a lot of rock/metal musicians are actually quite wholesome or at least decent people IRL (ie Lemmy Kilmster, George Fisher, Rob Zombie, Dave Grohl, Freddie Mercury, etc.)

    • @loke6664

Here I think it more comes down to "any other type of music is evil in a movie named after one type". If you watch something like "Rock'n roll high-school" or "school of rock" the bad guys listen to other types of music. Metal and rap usually get the villain role in movies like this because they stand out a bit more.
I'm a long haired metal guy and I don't beat up people who likes different music then me, I don't think I even met someone that stupid. Politics and religion is what usually starts actual fights.

This brought back memories. When I was a kid, my grandma would watch Latin American telenovelas all the time, and I absolutely hated them for all the constant screaming and drama. Now, though? I dig that sappy romance family issues plot twist-ridden shit. Grandma was right with her media preferences. Give me more, and make it juicy. I have to warn the American audiences, though, if you think step-cousin romance is too much, get ready to be thoroughly disturbed by all the other shit happening in this genre. Telenovelas don't coddle their viewers, exploring morally complex situations, often in the most shocking way, is kind of their thing. Also, cultural values, I guess.
On a different note, I love how the feathers on these characters poof up and stand on their ends when they get angry. It gives them feral avian vibes I didn't know I dig. That's how you furry... Less fat shaming would be preferable, though. At least have the balls to actually draw the girl as fat, a girl can be both fat and attractive, you know. Then again, it's not like I haven't seen girls (it's always girls for some reason) be fat-shamed despite being curvy at the very most. Some people just have the fashion magazine Photoshopped model brainrot and want to make it every young girl's problem, it seems.

Italy is still the reigning champ for their Titanic ripoffs...; but like Gabriel's late father; this movie was a contender. I've never been half as deeply confused by the plots of Anime or Slavic made animations as I routinely am by cartoons from central europe or latin america for some reason. Animation is decent, but plot usually gives me a headache.

The motivations and whiplash inducing changes to are what drive me nuts. Also someone else mentioned this is basically a weird version of Hamlet. That absolutely destroyed my brain when I realized they were right.

What's funny about the dancing thing in this movie is apparently roosters do dance to attract a hen and to assert dominance in the flock. Also thicc hips and thighs don't automatically make someone fat. The fat shaming doesn't make much sense. Especially when there are characters that make her look like a stick by comparison.
