    David Chase lets us know exactly what happens to Tony when Tony enters the diner. When he's walking in from outside two red lights briefly appear on Tony (one at his temple, one on his chest). There's no source for these red lights and they don't appear again when everyone else walks into the diner. I believe Chase is letting the audience know that not only does Tony die in this diner but he will get one bullet in the temple (with his guardian angel Meadow not there sitting on his right to protect him - that's why her inability to parallel park the car gets so much attention) and one in the chest. As Chase has said, what happens to Tony is all there in the scene.

    • @TurboV8boi
      @TurboV8boi 8 месяцев назад +6

      Holy crap man. I just rewatched this scene because of the red lights you mentioned. You can see that the source is a van in the reflection in the window to the right of the door. The one on his head is the 3rd brake light and the one on his chest is a brake light (should be the driver side). What's wild is AS SOON as Tony passes the lights, right before he opens the door (just a few frames), the lights turn off. 100% that's where he gets shot. I haven't seen anyone mention this. I was already convinced he dies before this, but this detail blows me away.

  • @NateOfLight
    @NateOfLight Год назад +259

    It took me 5-6 times through the series to accept that Tony *probably* dies at the end.
    There's great, complex theories, but I came to a much simpler conclusion that many others probably have.
    The flashback to Bobby and Tony on the boat, "you probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?".
    We see Tony's perspective several times in the final scene. Every time that bell rings, we see his perspective. Twice with a random diner patron, once with Carmella, once with AJ & Member's Only Guy, and once more before the cut. We can assume the last one is Meadow as she's approaching the diner. Every time the bell rings, we see what Tony sees. The last time is, what I assume, the last thing he sees and hears - darkness and abrupt silence.

      Exactly. And the "Cut to black" was even referenced during the show. We got Tony's perspective multiple times to drive home the point of Tony's death. This story was about Tony, when Tony dies there's no story left to tell. The cut to black following that final bell was Tony's perspective after that bell. Black, nothing, sudden end. Death visualized from Tony's perspective.

    I recently rewatched the entire series and I want to share my speculations on what happened after the finale:
    1- Tony is absolutely dead, killed by the man in the green jacket who entered the bathroom shortly before. The bathroom door provides a perfect line of fire for what I'm sure was a head shot. Precisely how Phil Leotardo died.
    2-As we have already seen in the series several times, the killer, after shooting several times, drops the gun and walks out of the restaurant.
    3-Carmela, Antony and several witnesses scream in shock. There is almost certainly blood on the table and on them.
    4- Almost certainly in the immediate period after Tony's death, Carmela will try to organize the funeral with the help of Paulie and Patsy. A.J. he will fall back into a deep depression due to the shock of seeing his father killed before his eyes.
    5- Due to Tony's fame, after his murder Meadow will not be able to become a partner in her husband's law firm due to ethical implications. Due to the shock she suffered, she did not remember to change her anti-conception pills and soon became pregnant with her first child.
    6- The project of building and selling Carmela's house will go up in smoke due to pressing expenses, both for AJ's care and for the alleged legal involvement in Tony's affairs. He won't be able to get his hands on Tony's hidden foreign accounts because Christopher and Paulie failed to assassinate the Russian in the woods.

However it was immediate talks of a follow up movie in which Gandolini was supposed to star in. I believe the first theory that the viewers get whacked. Like him and Bobbie had mentioned before. You won’t see it coming or know it happened. The surprise ending you never saw coming and the moment you thought something was wrong with your tv. Now in the new movie you’re listening to a dead Christopher Multisante telling you a story

    • @luisalejandro2335
      @luisalejandro2335 Год назад +25

      Honestly, idk if he dies or not. That’s missing the point. The point is that once the screen cuts to black, the story has ended. I’m sure life goes on for AJ, Meadow, Carmela, and, maybe even Tony. However, we’re not privy to the rest of their story. While Tony may not have truly changed he has resolved the reason why we were introduced to him in the first place; his panic attacks. He’s not getting them anymore and if he does, he’s managed to deal with em. Indictments are on their way, so whether Tony dies or goes to prison it’s all downhill from there. I believe the man in the members only jacket is a red herring. Only there to further our anxiety about what’s about to happen.

    3 As I was watching this I couldn't help but think that if you were to compare the six seasons to real seasons. 1-2 was the spring, youthful and innocent. 2-3 was the summer, brutal but still vivacious. 4-5 was the fall, things are still good but getting bleak. 6 was the winter, cold and unforgiving.

    Excellent video. It appears now that the vast majority of people believe Tony was whacked in the diner. And Chase's recent comments can't be ignored. However, this would have been an odd, if not unique, hit if done by the mob. First, hundreds of mobsters have been hit in restaurants, but I can't think of a single one in front of their nuclear family. Tony wasn't in hiding anymore. Why there and then? Also, I don't think Butch would benefit any more if he backed out of their recent agreement. If I was Tony's enemy seeing the feds close in on him I'd root for the inevitable life sentence and not use my resources to kill him. Paulie and Patsy must have seen this as well. But the fact we're still talking about this after so many years is what made it so amazing.

    I’ve seen much more sound evidence of supporting the “Tony died” theory so that’s where I stand. There’s so much foreshadowing, to the point where there’s no way it’s just accidental. It also just doesn’t make sense that it would cut to black if he survived. I think that a lot of the theories stating Tony lived are far-fetched at best and honestly just seem like they’re coming from a place of denial. I think Chase just didn’t want to show Tony being murdered in front of his family.

    Tony most definitely DID NOT DIE. He sees Meadow and they ALL live ON!!! THEIR STORY ENDS. NOT TONY!!! Tony is the hero. His family is the hero. They meet up, doing their own thing. They have food and they go on living their lives which is not a dream life any more. This is my interpretation of the last and final scene of the series 'The Sopranos' which according to me was FANTASTIC!!!
    It's something about the way Meadow behaves that tells me that Tony lives. She is not scared or sad or depressed about her father already, intuitively. Instead she's all about daily chores and hassles, big and small like parking and trying to be on time etc.
    There is routine and continuity there!!

    God I love your explanation of what is going on in this final episode as well as the final episode itself because I myself can relate to this episode and what is going on in my neighborhood at the moment, all the old stores and restaurants that been in my neighborhood my whole life have all been slowly closing down and becoming nothing but abandoned buildings with longtime history in them.
    It’s really sad to see because a lot of those business owners lived in those buildings and worked in those stores/restaurants their whole lives and now, it’s all over and they have moved on somewhere else.
    All the old residents in my neighborhood have all moved away and the houses and apartments all look so different from what they have been for the majority of my 39 years alive in this planet, and now have residents who look at me like I am the stranger in my own hometown neighborhood, it’s a sad and crazy feeling to be able to witness things that have flourished and then slowly withered away into nothing and molded into something completely new and foreign to you.
    Real life “End of an Era” type stuff.

    I think David Chase wanted to leave the ending OPEN so that if they decided to do a follow up movie Tony's character could still be alive. The uncertain ending gave them more options, but then Jim Gandolfini's untimely death prevented any future movies involving him. Also, please consider that through out the decades the NY families had a strong rule against whacking a made man in front of his family (wife and kids) and it has been widely supposed that if Tony did die in the final scene it was a NY family ordering the hit.

    A death knell is the ringing of a church bell to announce the death of a person. Historically, it was the second of three bells rung around death, the first being the passing bell to warn of impending death, and the last was the lych bell or corpse bell, which survives today as the funeral toll. Hence the ringing of the bell at the restaurant door.

    Great video, you did miss the significance of the viewpoints to show us, the viewer, that the black is Tony’s view. It’s really the first time they ever show his viewpoint, but they show when he walks in the restaurant and each time the bell rings, he’s looking up and we see who enters; so the last bell ring and him looking up to black is a subtle nod that he’s dead.
    There’s also the importance of three’s; this assassination will be the third attempt on his life, in the episode there are three times Tony looks behind him and is surprised someone is there, and Meadow trying to park three times. If Meadow had parked right on the first try, she would be beside Tony obstructing the view of the gun man and Tony says himself their code is family is off limits.

    Just finished the series myself, Tony definitely got killed, it’s the only fitting conclusion to this show.
    I totally understand the other side of the argument where Tony lived, it’s absolutely possible. The thing is, his days were numbered. At this point, Tony has regressed as a person, he’s even worse than when he started in Season 1. His regression is made clear when he started his shit all over with AJ’s therapist, except this time he’s more privy to therapy & how to better garner sympathy from professionals like her.
    The New Jersey mafia is essentially finished; everyone is either dead, scattered, or in Carlo’s case, flipped. Tony’s lawyer even told him there’s a very good chance he’d get indicted & would end up in jail because of it. Could he avoid it like he did other things? Sure, I can see that, but does the show really need to dedicate more seasons for this whole thing to degrade that far? No way, Tony’s story is over, there’s nothing left to tell, assuming this is the ending people side with.
    Tony getting shot (especially in front of his family, which is horrific) is the better way to end this show.

He's going to spend the rest of his life jumping at every shadow, wondering if every person that walks past him is waiting to blow his brains out, whether it's the guy in the Members Only jacket or some randos on the street. It's a karmic end for someone whose whole plot in the show was founded on his anxiety that he's condemned to spend the rest of his life waiting to die.
