What a bad CV joint sounds like

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 6 сен 2024
  • This is the sound made by an outer CV joint when it is worn out. This is usually preceded by a torn CV boot, which allows the grease to escape. If the sound is louder when turning in one direction, the direction you are turning is the side of the car with the bad joint. For example, if it is loudest when turning left (as in this video) the left outer CV joint is the bad one.

    I've just recently learned through my own Honda. If it does that while turning, it's the cv axle. If it does it while going straight and turning, it's the inner cv joint.

      Thanks so much Randy, ohk when it goes straight it's an inner but when turning its outer neh? Coz my Toyota corolla when going straight it does that

      Very good for people who do not know the half shaft has two CV joints one at wheel side and one on the differential side. The wheel side CV joints are typically ball type but the differential side are called tripod CV due to 3 armed yoke with ball bearings which slide in a cylinder that looks like a tulip.

      im Squid I looked into it and it's not so bad.It doesn't mean that you should ignore it,just it's not a reason not to drive your car anymore.So we have this cv joint that you can immagine to be like an animal bone joint that is inside a rubber casing,which is filled with grease to lubrify it.The same way a bone joint has cartilage so that the bone extremities don't friction together or else you would be in pain.That by the way happens with age,that's why you hear old people saying that they're BONES hurt...Anyway,sometimes that rubber casing can break,allowing for the grease to fall out and be washed out by water and also allowing debris to go inside there.Now that the joint has no lubrication it will grind on itself and make that noise.It takes time to get destroyed but when it happens you lose direction and YOU WILL drive into a tree or whatever.Or it could take even less if you are the kind of driver who takes sharp turns and therefore the joint will be even more stressed and it's gonna wear itself out quicker.So you can either clean the joint replace the rubber and put new grease or change the joint or axle all together and that will depend on what car you got and if you buy the parts new or used.For my Peugeot 206 year 2000 i got asked for 80 pounds to change the front right axle and joint with labour included.

    Cv joints can be quite intermittent at times. I’ve seen one that only made noise for a half second period when passing through 30-35mph. Wheel bearings grind more consistently and the noise is less dependent on the steering angle like the cv noise is.

    This is what's been driving me crazy the past few months on my new-used 07 GMC Yukon denali! And recently it's gotten unbearably worse to the point it's embarrassing as I get dramatic head turns while I TURN! It's been diagnosed one thing to another, first it's ball joints... ordered those. Then it's hub bearings, ordered them(actually should be delivered tomorrow). Then I FIND THIS VIDEO OF NOISE, I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS EXACT NOISE TO HELP ME BETTER DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM FOR FOREVER. And now I can finally fix the problem without having to spend any more money! So I'm returning the hub bearings once they arrive and ordering the CV joints/axles? ASAP.
    Thanks for this great/right to the point helpful video!

    Mine does it regardless if I'm turning, or going straight. It started out as a low clicking noise that continues to get louder and louder the faster I go.
    Before the noise my car was having s bad shake or vibration while I was on the highway starting around 50-70mph but nobody could see anything wrong when I took it to the shop (THREE DIFFERENT TIMES) kept hearing a clunking noise that went on for months even after I had my front end replaced due to an accident. But mechanic said it was just a sound the car makes. It was normal..
    So then I had my brakes changed and oil changed, as soon as I leave the shop is when I hear the clicking. This was only days ago. Now driving home from work last night the noise got louder and started shaking my car with the noise. Scary! So its parked.

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  4 года назад

      Does the sound or vibration seem to change when you accelerate or decelerate slightly? If so, it is probably still one of your axles, but it is the inner joint that is bad rather than the outer joint. The outer joints fail most often and cause the clicking noise when turning. Inner joints usually cause a vibration at higher speed and sometimes change as you change the load on the vehicle.

Like my situation started out with this noise only when turning left/ right as a squeaking, over the months it's gotten louder, and now it's the same just worse. And it's still making this noise after coming out from a turn and straightening... but that only lasts for a few seconds while going straight. It sounds and feels like something is about to break off the bottom/sides of my car right from under me.

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  3 года назад

      It is likely some part of the wheel or brake rotor hitting something. For example, maybe the new cotter pin in one of your new tie rod ends could have been left sticking out a little bit and the wheel or a wheel weight is hitting it as it rotates. Try to figure out which side of the car it is coming from by having someone stand beside the car as you slowly drive past. Then, you can remove the wheel and look for signs of rubbing parts. Otherwise, you could take it back to the place where the work was done.

      If the boot is torn, the joint will fail. If it isn't replaced, it could eventually come apart while driving. This would make the car undrivable at best, or damage surrounding components at worst. Often, you can drive with the noise for a while, but it is impossible to say how long.

    Justin Miller Isn't the opposite of the side your turning. I.E. Right turn Left joint?

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  6 лет назад +1

      No, the problem is usually the side that is on the inside of the turn. When you turn a corner, the inside wheel turns sharper than the outside wheel (it's called toe-out-on-turns), and puts more strain on the CV joint. Because of this, if the noise is loudest on a right turn, it is probably your right joint that is bad.

    Would this be the same problem if the car shakes a little when accelerating?

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  5 лет назад

      If you have a vibration that only occurs when you are accelerating, it is often caused by the inner joint on the CV axle. So, yes, you would need to replace the axle.

    Does it make noise when you let go of the gas pedal?

      Not usually, or at least it is less loud when you let off the gas pedal.

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  5 лет назад +1

      Maybe . . . but it is usually only when accelerating, or at least more pronounced when accelerating. If it is making the same sound as this and only while turning the wheel then it is probably your CV joint.

    Does a bad cv shaft make a clicking noise while in park

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  4 года назад

      No. It may click once when you put it in park and let off of the brake pedal, but the CV axle isn't moving when the car is in park.

    I have a 1995 Kawasaki Mule 2510 (not a car, but still uses cv axles) that makes this sound when turning. I would gladly replace them, but one cv axle is $700. Is there any way to rebuild a cv axle? I need something that's under $200.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 7 лет назад +2

      If it's clicking it's already worn. You could try putting a new boot and grease (clean it first) but it's probably not worth it. That said, you can drive for a while with clacking cv's - when they start doing it when driving straight that means you need to replace it now!

      Whichever direction you are turning in when the noise is most pronounced - that is the side of the car with the problem.

    That's what I have too. How important is it to fix this? And how much should it cost for parts and labor?

    • @abandonthisfate2461
      @abandonthisfate2461 8 лет назад

      it's pretty important. dangerous to leave to long as the joint can actually disintegrate

    • @walkingfreak
      @walkingfreak 8 лет назад

      +humanyoda It's important enough to fix that if you do not fix the problem eventually things will come apart and do more damage and cost you more money and could lead up to needing a tow.

    • @warmandscratchy
      @warmandscratchy 8 лет назад +2

      +humanyoda About $200 for parts and labor (for me) in CO. Very important, as you could damage other parts in the wheel and it will cost you more, eventually it will completely break off and it'll turn on but it won't go anywhere, or the wheel could come off while driving. I would only take one chance on driving it and that's to the auto-shop.

    What if it does that without turning?

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  5 лет назад +1

      Does the noise occur only when the vehicle is moving? Then it is likely something wrong with an axle, brake component or wheel. If it is not affected by steering, it is probably not an outer CV joint. Does it change based on load (meaning that it gets worse or better when you accelerate or decelerate)? If so, it could be an inner CV joint. Otherwise, I would look for something that is loose. Good luck!

    Which side cv joint noisy

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  6 лет назад

      The side that is in the direction you are turning. For example, if it is loudest when turning left, (as in this video) then it is the left outer CV joint that is bad.

      If the problem is still coming from the CV joint (you would need to determine this yourself), then you would need to replace the CV joint again--I would recommend using a different brand this time.

    • @JustinMillerAutomotive
      @JustinMillerAutomotive  6 лет назад

      Did you replace the outer joint? When the noise is occurring, the direction you are turning when the noise is the loudest is the side of the car that has the defective joint. Also, I have had more than one bad CV axle right out of the box--especially if you are dealing with remanufactured parts. If you are sure that you did it right and got the right axle, I would replace it with another--maybe even a different brand this time.
