Great diagnosis and excellent explanation that a tuner must be able to identify actual problems rather than attempt tuning them out I have one plastic handled Snap-On driver left and cherish it
Most of my Subaru buddies spend more time with their cars broken in the front yard than driving them 😅 I figure they must be a fun drive to keep fixing em even after all that trouble.
Nice video pretty helpful. Just one question have you guys noticed subaru engines has a pretty bad blowby? I'm on debating on getting a 2013 frs will low mileage but bad blowby. Thanks
JDM EJ20X GT Liberty/Legacy Turbo. 485,000 km. Rocker cover gaskets once, cam seals etc once, change oil every 5,000km, belt every 50,000km. Uses no oil or coolant. Still goes like mad.
@@WT4T I'd like a tune but I'm not near you. BTW I only just this afternoon replaced the 2nd rocker cover gasket. I didn't do it because it wasn't leaking when I did the rh one. I cane it. I recently did Adelaide to the Queensland border in 20 hours (2000km). I often do 700km to my boat, occasionally towing a boat. It has an oversized turbo & goodies too.
And this is why i monitor, feedback knock and AFR, like a hawk on my own 05 STI. just recently had too replace the upstream o2 sensor and the maf... running lean and letting the engine knock kills these engines faster then most anything else.
Edit: Good one, not what I expected. I paused at 0:35 and I'm guessing it was the BOV that blew it up... or injectors were installed and it wasn't tuned AND the BOV helped compound the problem. That intake is also sus... jeez, it could be anything at this point.
Best to fix the issue with the car. Maf is a far superior way to meter air as it is a real measurement of airflow instead of a calculation and estimation.
@@WT4T very easy information to find online. What a shame. They must not know about Google yet. Or maybe they think it's a badge of honor to kill a Subaru 😥
Always always always detonation and bad oil. Some bad apples in the bunch m. Sometimes you just get a bunk motor. But. It’s rare. It’s almost always user error. EJ engines are very reliable engines if running properly.
lol I noticed the title & even before I pressed play on this vid I was thinking the only time for a engine or any other engine to blow up 90% of the time it was running lean the other 10% was because some dimwit forgot to tighten up one of the connecting rod bolts. My Subaru engine ran over 10 years without blowing up mind you when I mod my car the MAM was bypassed sure she ran rich but safe pushing 8k rpm on every shift no issues, well gearbox yes installing heavy duty clutch will eventually break 2nd gear :) my advise get a twin clutch & 6 speed no more issues unless you like the ratio's of the old 5 speeds pulls 80 mph in 2nd gear hehehe.
It was an offbrand filter, unsure if it's dry or oiled. Oiled gets a bad rep because people over oil them however when done correctly they won't foul the maf and actually trap particles better. We mostly sell and install dry though just because the cleaning procedure is much simpler.
@@WT4T even done correctly particulates will come off on the inside of the filter over time and usage, damaging the sensor. Btw they say a great dry brand traps 99% vs oil at 98 due to micron size of the material used. 1 wear hole and I don't care what filter you got if gravel can flow through. Either way good find and added bonus to the wife for buying gauges.

nice to have you back!
finally he uploads, welcome back
Glad to be back! Let me know if there's anything specific you want to see more of.
@@WT4T firstly car specs in every vid would be great (turbo, injectors etc), then content on tuning processes is always fun to watch

Frs should have little to no blow by. I wouldn't get one if it had a lot for sure!
Thanks for taking the time to upload this informative video! I am just now getting into tuning my 02. This is good stuff.

Debatable! 😅

That's one of the reasons I'm not a fan of Open Source Tuning. While you CAN monitor things it's not as simple as with an Accessport.
ummm, was that a washer that fell off at 5:31 when you put the new maf in ? that thing plinko'd into the abyss.
If it did ooooh well. Zero reason for a washer there. I've seen so much random hardware on maf's over the years
@@WT4T lol, yea i bet, had your videos running in the background and i heard sonething plinko... and had to rewind. haha. hope all is well
Appreciate your views!
How are you reading AFR? I thought these cars didn't come with a wide band?
The oem sensor is a wideband but not the same kind of wideband as an aftermarket gauge uses. He pointed out the OEM one wasn't that accurate.

It's always the maf! Or on big power sd cars it's the fuel pump
EJs don’t just blow up. There is always a reason they did. And 99% of the time it’s user error or the tune being bunk. Or both.
Not 99%. Incorrect tune sure but I see fuel pressure issues and maf issues cause the most problems.
Best to go speed density in this situation?
Best to fix the issue with the car. Maf is a far superior way to meter air as it is a real measurement of airflow instead of a calculation and estimation.
Surely a throttle cut can be added when going lean?
Should have afr gauge before even doing all the upgrades the owner did.
Nope, not on this platform 😭
They needa install and watch that aft gauge. Could have prevented the blow up.
I agree, most people don't even know what afr to look for anymore though.

I see bad MAF, no/wrong tune, and extended oil changes causing most issues.
None of my Subarus "just blow up"! 🤣
That's good to hear. The general consensus of the internet however is that they all just blow up.
about time 🥳

Oiled or dry filter?
Probably dry
@@dancee1007 you'd hope so, but I have screwed up maf with oiled brands in the past and why I don't use them.

I think doing donuts in the parking lot doesn't help
Yes, my guess they had wrong radiator cap and overheated and failed 😆
Not this time
How often should a maf sensor be cleaned?
Probably once a year, use proper maf cleaner and let it dry fully before plugging in.
Problem #1 is it has a woman's transmission
I know a fair number of women who'd likely mop the street/track with you. Maybe you hang out with the wrong girls.
