AVOID SUBARU ENGINE FAILURE by doing this EASY MOD!!

- If you want to avoid common Subaru issues like RING LAND FAILURE, ENGINE KNOCK and HEAD GASKET FAILURE then you'll defiantly want to change out your Subarus Oil Pickup Tube! Today we improved one of the weakest points of a Subaru motor to ensure that it can take some abuse and to avoid blowing the motor! If you have a Subaru you NEED to do this!
This is a simple and easy to install modification to make sure that your Subaru doesn't blow up
The mod we installed is called the Killer B oil pickup tube along with the Killer B windage tray
Follow me on Instagram- @beakhan or on tik tok @beakhan_
Had 3 Subaru's, never had a engine problem ever. Had my last impreza 5 years with 160kmiles. Never broke down once. It's how you look after a car. Just because you have a powerful car there is no need to thrash it day. Treat it with respect and it will be fine
I bought my wrx and the week after it blew up
@@vjuOG needed a driver mod
I ran my 2015 STI completely stock until 70k. I had an AOS installed. Then around 85k, I had a bigger radiator and cooling mod added. Then at 94k has the car pro tuned. Then added a ETS TMIC around 105k. Then my stupid turbo seals failed and oil leaked into my down pipe and I got rod knock. Now I added a turbo blanket to control heat and car is running fine. You have to really watch oil levels, engine heat and engine RPM with Subaru engines.
Bought the killer B pickup for my BRZ and I definitely recommend. Specifically if you got the Valve spring recall. More then likely there gasket pieces stuck in the old pickup tube.
Might as well have got the Killer B pan as well, that’s going to give a decent increase in oil capacity, which is also super critical if you go anywhere near the track. The oem Pan is undersized.
People bash the 2.0 EJ for having less torque, but we never had these problems. My 02 WRX went to 230k before sale. 04 WRX went to 100k, maybe lower miles…but zero motor issues. Problems are with the 2.5 EJ made for US market that has these problems. Americans want bigger displacement and torque. There’s a reason jdm cars only ran the 2.0 EJs.
head gaskets are a n/a thing, yeah wrx and sti’s can blow their head gaskets but from the factory they come with multi layer head gaskets so you REALLY have to beat on it to blow them
I'd recommend doing the cylinder #4 mod. If you do get one get from get a dom tune. It routes more coolant to the cylinder. Cylinder #4 tendes to go first.
Will do that asap! thank you!
@@beakhan you're welcome
More isn't better you'll starve cylinder 1 its a balancing act
Knock sensor is above Cylinder 4 for a reason if it knocks sort out your tune
“Doesn’t matter what it is, you need this to keep your Subaru from blowing up”, I disagree. There’s a significant difference between typical EJs and the newer FA motors. EJs need the cylinder 4 cooling mod, the FAs don’t but they need an AOS for blow by. Killer B oil pickup tube may be good “insurance” for both engines, but only if you’re beating the living shit out of your car, which is the reason it might have the possibility of blowing up in the first place, not because “it’s a Subaru”. Just my input lol.
It's because it's a subaru. Dont kid yourself. The fact these go for upwards of 32k new and the fact these motors (ej) have been in production forever, there's literally no excuse why they require so much shit that without tuners and molders, you'd never suspect and be out of a car before 100k miles. These oversights or planned obsolescence are a joke. Love these channels (not this one in particular) that are disingenuous about subarus. Anyone who isn't looking for good ol' youtube money would tell you the same story. I took good care of my fa20 that I had for 11 months and it's lower end already went at 28k miles. I took the absolute best care of it and drive it properly with proper warming and cooling and not all out all the time. Have fun with it now and then, but this is ridiculous. You can thank the epa fir ever growing unreliability with their loose clearances and light as fuck oil. For some negligible improvement in economy because the bankers who run the world say so.
@@remissiveslave I want to preface my response with saying that I completely agree with your perspective on the EPA ruining the efficiency of engines and inherently causing an increased probability of premature engine failure. Not all vehicle manufacturers are created equal, and I also agree with your point about Subaru fanboys having overzealous perceptions of the platform; retards that claim they “won’t blow up even with abuse” or “headgasket lol” are both going about it the wrong way. It just seems that some people get “lucky” and beat on their car with no issues whatsoever, and then others drive 30 miles and it blows up regardless of how careful they were. I’m sure there are a number of factors contributing to this, like fuel quality, elevation, driving style(especially), etc. so in that sense I’d say that Subaru’s have about the same risk factor for engine failure that other cars do, but admittedly you hear more about Subaru’s doing something stupid and blowing up, and there is comedic value in that so it shouldn’t be entirely discredited. I’ve been fortunate enough to only have one issue in over 50k miles of ownership, and my 2017 Wrx has been much more reliable than my last car (Mini Cooper lol). So that’s just where my perspective lies, and that’s why I’d say it’s a pretty good car.
@@remissiveslave also sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. I’m one of the retards that launches my car constantly, and at 53k all I have to show for it is a slightly rough second gear engagement(I’m guessing it’s from hitting redline in first and then throwing it into second too fast way too many times to count, but I’m not a mechanic so idk)
@@sadsquad8124 my 2020 had to be rebuilt at 28k miles. I know what abusive driving looks like and how to maintain my vehicles, there's no reasonable way my lower end went at 28k. Under warranty of course. You get these youtubers sell snake oil about modding, well my car would've been bricked for months had I nodded it and guess what, would've been denied the warranty even though in my case had nothing to do with mods. Even though the warranty will cover it, whos to say the technicians are good at fixing cars, it may never be the same again. I had a economy car, 14 Ford focus 5 speed and I treated it like a rally cross car for 230k before trading for the wrx, no engine problems, burned no oil, and only need to fix wiring harness under warranty from shafing and valve cover gasket at 207k miles.
@@sadsquad8124 my Ford did this in 3rd at around 180k. Was annoying at times but was the only real issue resultant of my very aggressive driving. Sad part is, I actually enjoyed driving that more than the wrx even though it was much slower. Always winding the overly na motor to its limit and damn it was fun.
Really appreciate you doing a video on this specifically for us WRX/STi owners. Also, don't forget the Cyl 4 cooling mod to add next. I hope you cover that in your next video. Thank you again. You also gained a subscriber too 🤙
of course haha, im slowly learning myself too so i appreciate the help! Cyl. 4 cooling mod is on its way🤙🏽 thank you!
@@beakhan Don't yall mean Cylinder 3 cooling?
Just wanted to recommend an air oil separator as well. Really helps with blow by. The stock pcv system doesn’t do too good of a job. Bunch of different brands to choose from but I highly recommend the Crawford performance one. Great video like always! 👍🏼
Thanks for the tip! Luckily the previous owner had already installed a Grimmspeed AOS
@@beakhan awesome! Typically one of the best first mods to do with turbo Subarus. Glad you have it already.
Bought my 19 STI with 5k miles. Bit the bullet and got an extended warranty to 80k miles. I noticed this big COBB cylindrical thingy installed to the left behind the top mount. Honestly, At the time I didn’t know wtf it was or even what an AOS was😅. Did some intense Google Fu/YouTubing, educated myself and thanked the stars it was done. So far I’m at 23k miles. Daily drive it. I like doing the maintenance myself, etc. I only boost up on the highways because I live in the city. So far no issues. Turbo motors will eat some oil so maybe gotta put in a half quart of 5w30 between oil changes. Depending on my driving habits.
My concern is whyTF did Subaru make clutch engagement such a pain in ass 🤣 I’ve got serious hills where I live, man!!!
Damn “hill assist” sneaks up and makes me look like an ass😂
I’m always weary of burning out the clutch sooner so I just end up stalling.
I know how to shut it off anyway but got used to it turned on 🙄
Sorry went off topic. I love my STI and I wanna get as many miles and years out of it as possible.
Does a perfectly fine job at stock boost level. Waste of money unless you are stage 2. Cooling mod also a waste
Literally just picked up my stock 2008 STI hatch today and I’m driving to Michigan from St. Louis Missouri watching these videos and making a list of parts. Already ordered the Apple play in unit & about to order the killer bee oil pick up tube. Keep up the great content! Hope to see your STI back inn commission sooner than later 🔥😭
My cylinder 4 just went. 85000 miles 2011 wrx tuned at 300hp. All cylinders at 150 compression. Cylinder 4 65 compression.
sheesh i need to do the cooling mod asap😅
your subie videos are super helpful because i’m planning on getting a 2011 wrx in 2-3 months
Glad i can help !!
another aftermarket piece you should buy right away is a spare motor.
Wait, the exhaust rusted out on your Subaru? And the previous owner tried a janky weld fix? That never happens! 😅 Anyway, nice clear vid. Mods to improve the life of your engine are always good 👍
😂😂hahah ikr, thank you!
just picked up my 2009 with only 100k miles on it subaru wrx sti hatchback as well, fuckin motor blew, just got it rebuilt and i wish i saw this beforehand, gonna purchase this with the cyl 4 cooling mod now !
ahhh shit man im so sorry to hear that, i hope your luck turns around soon brotha, Goodluck with the car!
Nice nice my dream car a new STi 🔥 Should also maybe install 4 cylinder cooling mood
definitely going to do that soon!
You welded up the heat expantion zones on yer manifold :))) oh boy those are gonna crack ...
"Every subaru needs to this avoid engine failure"
Rebuild every 100k miles.
Yup
100k Miles. Haha! More like every 40k
Loving these vids, how many miles are on the motor? And how much was the car if you don't mind saying?
thank you! Its 140k on the body and 40 on the motor!
Cant wait to see some OEM headlights
I'm stock. I don't need to worry about the engine blowing up.
Eyy already covered on my channel 👀😂 haha seriously tho bro this is the one the more people that know the better, I didn't even get to do it myself as my engine got sent away for rebuilding due to mine failing haha 😂
ah damn im sorry to hear that man, but atleast youll basically have a new motor soon!! hahaha
@@beakhan nahh this was a year back now man I'm fully built now haha and it love the abuse on a daily 😂👌
Is this same issue for non turbo 2.5 2006 Impreza auto.
Where did you buy it?
Had the AOS, cylinder 4 cooling mod, and drive the car gently as compared to most STi owners (did no launching or track days), stock tune, also did oil changes religiously at 3,000 miles with redline oil... Aaaaand ended up with spun rod bearings at 34,000 miles. Lets face it, the EJ engine is a crap shoot.
im so sorry to hear that brother, i hope i have better luck with this one😅
@Vince Calibur Redline is an Ester based oil with additional wear additives like Zinc and Phosphorus (ZDDP). Those are great additives for bearing wear, not great for catalytic converters. It's a very high quality oil, and can even hold up to track days, although I didn't do that with the STi, but have with many other cars in the past.
I used 5w-30 weight oil, Redline 5w-30 pretty much has the same properties of a 40 weight oil. I did UOA's regularly and got great results. The last UOA that I got back suddenly had about 14ppm of silver in the report and then the engine was dead very shortly after.
Subaru did the repair under warranty, so it was no big deal on that front. The tech who did the work said it was common and he did swaps regularly for bearing failures in the STi. He didn't have data, but said he thinks that the metallurgy in the bearings is simply flawed.
@Vince Calibur I'd be hard pressed to say that clean oil contributes to engine failure in any application, but who knows. I can see it from the perspective that folks that who are more aggressive with oil changes may be doing it because they drive the cars harder. But really, there are too many variables to quantify it all.
Subaru as much as admitted that they had issues with bearings. They settled a class action lawsuit that addressed that exact issue and covered '08-'17 models. Mine was an '18. My guess is that mine had the same issues and just happened to be outside of that window but still was probably using the older parts. Apparently '19 & '20 models aren't having the same issues, from what I've read / seen.
In the end I think it boils down to like I said in the initial post; EJ's out of the factory are just a crap shoot.
I had 105k before a failed turbo leaking oil.
thats a bummer. Ive been building subaru engines for about a decade now, and i have a theory about subaru rod failure. I run a heavier weight oil and then let the engine idle for a while before i drive. I think subaru recommends too light of an oil, in the hopes of improving cold start protection. that comes at the detriment of wear protection at higher temps. I also recommend filling the oil filter before putting it on. helps get oil to the motor faster after a oil change. just a thought.
this is an ej problem not a fa problem. when the fa is in the sti the platform wont be the most unreliable car for subaru as the critics lump them all as a whole.
I hope he let that RTV dry for a least an hour while the bolts were finger tight👀
i got the 5 min one haha, so you just have to wait 5 mins before tightening it down which i did👍🏼
@@beakhan alright. I know got one and it said to let sit for an hour and then torque lol. Just making sure
Great videos mate!
Thank you!
The amount of hand motion going had me thinking this was a sign language video
Got one on my 2012 🤙
Nice video. Been too long!
Sorry man, i got hit with covid so it was slow haha. But im all better now so they should be rolling out!
That's some haircut there fella!
Those welds at 02:59 look like my friend did them. And hes a trained welder...
Hi where do I get the oil pick up tube from.
Dose this go for na subies too? I have a 09 2.5i sedan and want to make it last, will this be necessary?
We need next video
Awesome videos! I'm going to buy my WRX (hopefully an STI) soon, and this are great advise for me to follow once it get my car.
Would help if you added links where you bought the wind age tray oil pickup tube.
sorry about that man but I would recommend hitting up high and take performance on Instagram! he can get automotive parts fast and safely!
All you need to avoid engine failure in Subaru is EJ207.
Nah FA20DIT baby 😤
what happen at the end what did the girl say lol
i don’t remember tbh😂😂
what oil pick up do you recomend
wow talk about excessive varnish on the inside of that engine... not changing oil are we?
I love you ❤️ She’s coming together so well!!
love you too brodie, cant wait to cruise!!❤️
Where did you get the vent mount for the ap?
This guy makes me want to sell my STI. I am ashamed to be in the same car owner circle.
I just hope he atleast let the silicone dry before he just tightened them all up and just poured oil in.
Lmao the girl was just watching u at the end
What is the desired oil pressure read at?
Need to make more daily videos planning on buying a 2012 wrx and planning on doing this mods.. subiegang 😎😍🚘
ayyyee!! Good luck getting one man they are tons of fun!
Where did you order the oil strainer?
all off amazon lol
@@beakhan Thank you.
When's the Tomei Install?? 👀
very soon👀🤭
When is the exhaust video coming 😅
sooooon👀😅
Mainly the cracks are due to the fact it is brazed and not welded
there shouldn't be welds there anyway. thats were the header is supposed to expand with high exhaust pressure, there should be springs where those shitty brackets were. the previous owner, nor the current owner have any idea.
@@seanmitchell256 I’m talking about the oil pickup...
You need to upload more
i know my bad man😕, ill get on it more haha
Not just pick up tube, also proper maintenance and not beating your car like an idiot. 99% is the drivers fault not doing the service interval and 1% is the car due to manufacturers. Must replace oem not after market.
Hope Bro Bro used lock-tight!!!
Them:how come you don't have an accent?
Us:Think about it.
For some reason he sounds like chrisfix 😂😂👌👌
lol bro you can't avoid blowing up, it's a subaru design.
It’s what makes a Subaru a Subaru :’)
😂😭
Nah man you say that. Mine has over 400k on it. Only a reseal. Dont try to shove 600hp out of it and tune it right and it wont blow up
how many miles do you have?
Maybe changin piston rings. Isnt that a problem
That would require a complete overhaul of the engine which can cost between 5-15 grand depending on who does the work and what parts are used and how fast you want to go.
Any oil leaks after doing this ? Lol
Yes but Bro, you could've linked the product :(
If this guy knows this why doesn't Subaru.
🤷🏽♂️
$$$ cost $$$
Should have just bought the killer B oil pan and pick up lmfao
So how much damage can an exhaust leak do??
Depends where the leak is at.
that wasn't actually an exhaust leak, that is were the header is supposed to expand with exhaust pressure. he welded it shut and it will crack again; exhaust leaks before the turbo are bad because you are loosing exhaust pressure that is supposed to be going into your turbo. loss exhaust pressure= loss of boost pressure
The shit you have to go through to make these dying assets not garbage from factory is criminal.
it is kind of crazy they still havent fixed some issues theyve had for over 10 years now lolll
@@beakhan I bring this up 9-10 of the time I'm a clueless basement dwelling hater who has no ride and jealous. Funny how tough facts are for sone people digest or accept.
“By doing this easy mod”
-Not purchasing one to begin with
I 2nd this. Doing that mod has made my life so much better.
is this a AOS?
no, an aos is an air oil separator. this is just the oil pick up tube but an air oil separator is also mandatory for Subarus if you want to ensure a healthy motor
what did the girl say in the end lmfaooo
i dont remember tbh😂
What do you mean "wasn't designed to go sideways"?
Its a Rally Car.....
when i said sideways i meant drifting/donuts lmaoo
@@beakhan Which is what rally and rallycross do dude. Pretty sure you wont throw the car around as hard as that.
Now all that's left is a cylinder 4 cooling mod and an AOS and then it should be safer.
luckily my car came with the aos, but cylinder 4 cooling mod coming up soon!
@@beakhan nice good luck with the build I have same car 2014 sti hatch
Will follow the build
would’ve been funny if the engine blew at the end of the video
But its stealth!!!
Maybe you should just buy a Honda.
been there done that lmfao
Seems like Subaru would have done this by now if this was truly the reason the head gaskets go.
they shouldve done a lot haha
Subarus blow up for multiple reasons. Bearing failure due to lack of oil and oil pressure, broken ring lands, and just flat out abuse and lack of maintenance. This mod also helps with people who track their car because the stock pick up is known to not get enough oil when oil is sloshing side to side when going around corners fast.
Definitely never getting a Subaru 😂
Subaru is all about the love. If you dont love them unconditionally, you're going to end up hating them lol
@@mistrgiggls2554 love. Are you dull? What's to love about a car you can't get groceries in without the likelihood of some major engine b.s emerging out of nowhere because you so much as didn't fuck the exhaust tip out of LOVE. every person I've ever known with one Ej has had serious engine issues well before 150k miles and these are people who treat their car like their first born. Theres nothing to love about constant paranoia and anxiety over not doing all of the nearly 100 different things perfect to keep these piles of shit running. Mitsubishis are far better.
@@remissiveslave i have friends with blob eyes to 2020 wrx and sti. Some blow up and some dont. Idk why you got an issue with a simple little comment that in no way affected you. If you dont like them then good for you bro? I like evo's but like every car have issues. Did you wake up this morning and have carnation instant bitch or something? You went on to a video about subaru engines to just talk shit like a little bitch and its honestly pretty funny. Made my day lol.
@@mistrgiggls2554 facts have become micro-aggressions in these times, no better case than this. Subaru are frail, flimsy, and faulty piles of shit. That's objective truth btw. They breakdown so easily. People who can afford to spend 20k making them how they should be from factory don't mind b.s'ing everyone just for views.
Bro you are explaining thia shit like its ome kind of insider knowledge. Its not homie. Its not that hard.
Who tf sees a fracture in an oil line and says "ehh it'll be okay"
lolll why you pressed bro? im just trying to help spread knowledge to beginners in the car community. Some people may not have the same knowledge in cars that you do
