Michael is right. As a native English speaker myself: work on your mastery of the spoken language, but never be ashamed of your natural accents. They are beautiful.
I actually was able to pick up an American accent naturally after a few years of listening to American news and TV shows. The harder part was communication and usage. For example, I made the mistake of asking someone "When are you going to leave?" from what I had been taught about going to vs will. How was I to know in this case to use present simple? Needless to say the American I was talking to was shocked and he must have thought I was so rude because my accent was good. 🥲
@@goyam2981 That's the risk of having a "good" accent, they expect too much in other areas such as vocabulary, grammar, idioms, collocations, register, etc. Having a stronger accent makes others expect less in those areas, making them more forgiving in many cases.
@@Sprachliebhaber-Languagelover Exactly. I'm a natural language learner and I pick up what I hear and in this case it turned out to be a curse. It's s rare to find TV series or dramas or RUclips videos that would have one person ask another "When do you leave?" And textbooks and teachers always try to generalize grammar rules and this is a big exception for the present simple. I actually heard it in a Jackie Chan movie believe it or not. The one his relative in the movie runs a grocery store in Brooklyn or something.
@@Sprachliebhaber-Languagelover Another one that a lot of foreign students don't know the nuance is "Do you understand?" I also made this mistake before and could see the annoyance on the face of the Canadian I was talking to.
I like sounding American when I speak English. Am not so sure about my Grammar or vocabulary, but while speaking, I try to sound American. I work on my accent. I've been learning English from my favorite tv-series and used to listen to Mulder and Scully ("The X-Files"), especially Mulder, so I like the way he speaks English and try to imitate his accent. I watch interviews with David Duchovny, the main actor of the series am telling about, and I try to learn from him. I'm working on my English to sound smooth and soft as Americans.
Sir I want to talk once in my life I don't know you will reply or not of my comment but when I see you I really see brightness on your face and I always get motivation the way you speak the way you motivate us boon for us for that kind efforts and it's really I am so happy to have you sir please keep it up and keep inspiring us ❤❤❤❤❤
People naturally grow up with their accents, which reflect their roots. Even in the USA, regional accents often reveal where someone is from. This is something we should take pride in.
As a nonnative college professor of English, it is most annoying that people still in the 21st century put such an obsessive emphasis on trying to reproduce a native-like accent to the detriment of clarity. I've heard about, for instance, English people that do not understand Scottish accents and so on. I am from Brazil and sometimes there are Brazilians from other regions who I need to ask them to repeat what they said sometimes twice becausecI just didn't grasp a shred of what they'd spoken. So CLARITY IN PRONUNCIATION and BEING WELL-ARTICULATED are far more important when it comes to SOCIAL INTERACTION and COMMUNICATION!
I had no intention or obligation to learn the English language, but you explain it so well that I will learn it immediately, thank you very much for helping me. ♡♡
I'm learing english and when it comes to speaking, i try to imitate the way that you speak english. because your english sounds so clear and really easy to get it. That is most importante thing. It is really good exmple of speaking english.
I have lived in England for five years and still don't have a British accent. As you said, “The priority of learning any language is not about the accent; it is how you pronounce the world, communicate easily, and make people understand what you are saying.” I agree with what you said! 😊😉🤙
Hi, I'm Huyen and I am also your student. I just signed up on your speaking course. Your voice is very clearly which keep me understand the lessons easier. I am happy learning. Thank you!
Hi, teacher. I m from Cuba. I am taking the Academic English Course level 60 at the University of Toronto. I have been living in Toronto for over five years, and I understand better now. We are studying a difficulties articles and sometimes I make errors in pronunciations. I also finished my Law Clerk Program at Seneca Polytechnic and can now read books. It has been hard and I still have a long way to go. My teacher Peter is Canadian and although he give us a hard time in ours classes, he is excellent. Your pressures are helping me. I studied law in Cuba, and I am planning to apply for a LLM Program at the same university. Thank you for your advice.
Hi, Mike ! You speak English so clearly that I can understand the whole video ! You're right, the most important thing is focusing on pronunciation and communication 👍👏

Great Michael, your comments and explantions really are helpful and encouraging. So I decided to leave my comfort zone and to write this comment. I immediately tried the techniques you recommended: shadowing and observing your face attentively. It is complicating but also fut. And I will keep practicing These two tecniques. You're completely right English is my second language, I learned it 25 years ago, despite of still having my venezuelan accent however, native English speakers understand me when I talk to them.
I enjoyed your explanations and also your accent as always. In fact, It's difficult to use the shadowing technique with movies because the actors' accents unlike your accent are often not clear and understandable!
