Cooking has been a way for me to show affection with my loved ones, as well as a tool to get to know people I’ve only just met. I think you can learn a lot about somebody asking what their favorite food is

Wow I love this! Makes me appreciate mechanics I don't play with as much.
I wanted to offer a different experience I have with Overcooked because playing the game with my wife in a weird way does feel like cooking in the sense of chaotic nature of being parents and just the general teamwork that is involved in making sure meals or other things are done that are needed.

That's a great perspective! I wrote this video so long ago that I've softened a lot on overcooked

Pokemon has been a surprising source of recipe ideas for me over few years.
Small ideas in game like putting apples in curry in SwordShield or strawberries in a ham and cheese sandwich in Violet turned into some of my favorite dishes to make and eat irl.
Sometimes all it takes is that one ingredient to make a dish into something great.

This was very cozy and thoughtful. Living without a kitchen for a few months, and I didn't realize how much I was missing cooking.

it's cooking that makes us human, and games like these are a wonderful way to connect to that humanity

Cooking in Pokémon is it’s own mini game with a ranking system and everything with a recipe management system

That Skyrim example blew my mind.
Of course, it's the prime example of "Cook your own way until you find the end result".
And how very few games do that.

    Great video as always :D
I also like it when cooking is integrated in a cool way like in BotW or FFXV. Hell, even in the second Professor Layton game it's nice, even though it's just making tea, with a fair bit of trial and error.
But especially in that game (can't think of another game in which it's similar) it was nice to make a cup of tea for random people that are stressed out or have a cold. Just like its nice to cook for someone and see them enjoy the food you made. (which is honestly one of the best feeling in the world imo)
Also: Don't be sad about your cooking bringing the boys to the yard, old man GC! :D

"The earliest example I can find is Suikoden II"
Ooooh the Tales and Star Ocean fandoms aren't gonna be happy.😝
What I really enjoyed about those cooking mechanics is how subtle they are with the characterization. In Tales of Smyphonia how many of y'all noticed that Regal was really good with seafood but didn't put two and two together how his hometown is by the ocean?

Never really engaged much with the cooking systems in the Tales games, maybe should next time I play, been thinking of replaying Symphonia recently. Regal was such a great character "I've made a wow to never hit anyone again, that's why I'll kick them", lol

I know the chances of this are almost zero, but if FFIX ever gets a FF7-style remake/reimagining I would love for them to explore Quina’s background/the Gourmand culture in general by way of a cooking mini-game or collecting rare-ingredients or something. His/her entire reason for joining the party was to travel the world and taste new things, and while Blue Magic already ties into that theme really well, I’ve always wanted to see it explored further. There are a ton of opportunities over the course of the game where food plays some kind of role that could be expanded to either include a side-quest/mini-game that either directly involves Quina or provides some kind of a hint the player could follow to find a new recipe/ingredient.

I realize as I grew up, and of course my view had changed of the world and priorities, I started to change the way I cooked. I remember when I was first starting college, I made a plan for a game called “What’ll It Be?” in a small notebook.
You’d play as a human transported into a world of monsters, from demigods or eldritch beings to smaller creatures and similar humans like yourself who have also been transported. You’d learn about their taste from their conversations and resort to your cookbook to gauge their interest on a recipe.
Essentially, it’d be a visual novel like VA11 Hall-A but replace alcohol with food dishes and there’d be small mini games to make the food. Some cultures would prefer different doneness of meats depending on culture. Those who worry about potential food borne illness would like meat more well done and those who are from a higher standard would like it bloody or those who prefer it just raw. Those who value family may feel comfort from simple dishes like chicken and rice bakes that feed a crowd or specialized dishes that remind them of someone special.
Sadly, time got in my way, and I never got to start laying the foundation in actual coding. I hope to one day go back and get better at art for my concepts, but this video brought back a lot of memories. Thank you for this.

The dishes people enjoy can show something about their character. The vagabond Cliff in Friends of Mineral Town having a love of home-cooked meals more then any other item is a nice bit of info about what they really desire.

This was really touching!! I'm a huge fan of cooking in games and I really wish that more of them would let you see the process or interact with the process of making the thing rather than just having it magically appear in front of you. I wish that from games with potion/ pultice making too haha. Lovely work as always

Great video. A few thoughts on some of the things:
    1) As a vegan autistic I really appreciate the nod to vegan alternatives, made me feel included. And yeah as an autistic with food sensitivities I often have to modify recipes.
    2) Have you seen accented cinema's video "food in Chinese cinema" I watched it again the other day and your video made me think of it, it's really good, recommend if you haven't, but yeah food is very important culturally.
    3) I've been watching a YT channel called "Vincenzo's plate" recently and getting into Italian food. He makes recipes himself, but in some of them he is either at his nonna's/grandma's and she's cooking or he has an expert guest on, like his friend David showcasing Bolognese sauce, a pizza chef or others, learning from the best but it also like you mentioned turns it into the social aspect of cooking and eating together.
    4) Potioncraft is another great example, you're making potions not food but the principles remain. You start not knowing anything finding recipes. Then slowly you'll learn to make strong potions of each and you have saved recipes. But then once in a while you don't have the ingredients and a customer wants the potion and you have to make it. Sometimes this means making a really inefficient potion that you just crank out to not take the reputation hit of not having what they want, but sometimes you end up with a more efficient recipe by exploring the effects of other ingredients or a recipe that can be made without taxing the base ingredients as much.
