My dad has had one of these since it was brand new, he did european delivery. At 140k miles he had a misfire and coolant loss diagnosed to be a cracked cylinder bore, and it turns out it's very common in these cars. He put a used motor in and the same exact thing happened to it a little while later. The solution is to bore all of the cylinders out and install an aftermarket sleeve which fixes that issue, but then the transmission WILL fail as his has twice now. But, he loves it enough where he's going to keep fixing it because it's such a great road trip car.

I live in Norway and we have plenty of mountains and steep hills, and it just pulled and pulled. I did love that car. He sadly sold it a bit later. It had factory Laser Blue paint which was lovely.
BTW, after next fuel filter change, just turn on the ignition, and the pump should fill the system and cut off when it reaches the correct pressure. Saves the hassle of make it fire after cranking for a while.

I own an 850R wagon (855) and S60R. Your vehicle is on the newer half of Volvo's glory days (IMHO) and a heck of a find.
And we used to run Mobile1 fully synthetic or Royal Purple. Oil is a MUCH bigger issue for turbo bearings than the block.
Also, the stock rods HATE low-end torque, don't get too aggressive below 2500 RPM, and don't be afraid to rev it up high. 8000 RPM rev limiter was common. Most failures seemed to be bending rods at low RPM, or running too lean at high RPM and cooking things.
And the tribal knowledge back in the day was that copper plugs got you a better spark than iridium. People would run copper NGK and change every 10k miles or so.
And make sure that your timing belt is good these are interference engines. It's not too bad to do yourself, but given the stakes nothing wrong with the dealer. And be prepared to replace or bypass your heater core. Question of when, not if.
    Beautiful wagon!

Many of us that have worked on a lot of Volvos don't recommend NGK iridium plugs. I wouldn't pull them out but if you start to see any misfires put in oem Volvo plugs or just a good set of coppers. Loving these videos.

Always put some dielectric grease on the insulators of the spark plugs. It allows the plug socket to release when you are removing the socket from the new plug.

I had a 2004 V70R with 6 speed manual. An independent shop did the timing belt/water pump service (with a water pump that fit and was "recommended" for the V70R). However, less than 10k miles later that water pump seized. Long story short, there is one and only one company's water pump that should be used with the 300hp 2.5l. It was 5+ years ago and I can't find my notes on which pump but (after the failure) it was easy to find info on IPD or other resources. Another note, if you get the rear facing seats from a 2001-07 V70 or XC70 (with seat belts and C pillar covers and possible trunk foot well), you have a 7 seat sleeper (a la Mercedes wagon). Mine had it as dealer installed option. Besides the one and only water pump, there is one and only shocks with the 4C suspension made by Monroe. They list for > $250 per. Amazing car! Yours (2005-07) has the nicer center console with "roll top desk" cover over the cup holders. I am keeping the stick shift AWD wagon spirit alive with a 2019 VW Golf Alltrack SEL with 6 speed manual (it is no V70R though). The radio with center speakers is amazing, mine had an aftermarket (small) subwoofer and DICE bluetooth module. All these cars were built in Belgium (I believe).

  • @bearddevil

I am so jealous of your score with that V70R, as a fellow Volvo AWD sleeper wagon owner, I would give someone else's left arm for a manual.
