  • Here we make Wax Chain lube from Paraffin Wax and Paraffin Oil, it's an easy recipe and it makes a great chain lube which I use on my casette and my chain.
    Sorry about the framing, though its hard to check when you are by yourself.

    In comparison to the plain paraffin wax how many more miles are you getting between re-waxing? Thanks!

      A. Borisov I’m going to say I don’t know, I was just fed up buying chain lube so I looked up how to make my own, it’s clean and lasts ages! As to how many miles it lasts, I can’t say for sure but much longer than the ones I used to buy. I’ll be able to update you once I have the bike running

    You are adding too much oil. If the lube is in a fluid phase, then dirt will stick to it.
    Try 5% oil for summer, 10% for fall spring, 15% for winter

  • @LeeTanczos

    im trying e45 cream with candlewax roughly 50:50. I found the lamp oil I sourced stank to high heaven (it had citronella in it) and the very roughly 50:50 with wax looked hopeful but absolutely didnt last: it was ultra slick and quiet but only for about 30 miles at which point chain sounded/felt dry again.

    • @KyrosHouseCycling
      @KyrosHouseCycling  6 лет назад

      Lee Tanczos yeah I may have mixed it with too much oil as it’s wearing off too quickly, I’m gonna mix in more wax pellets to make it thicker so it stays on like the last lot I made. 👍
      Best lube I ever had that first lot....

    • @LeeTanczos
      @LeeTanczos 6 лет назад +1

      Kyro's House I was frustrated that the chain felt dry and noisy... I bought 3in1 oil and it that on the chain - it felt great, but was black in no time. I have some ptfe powder now, will try adding that to some of the oil and see how it works...

    • @KyrosHouseCycling
      @KyrosHouseCycling  6 лет назад

      Lee Tanczos since this video I added about 500g more wax pellets, the mix seems to be about right now, the last mix was still on the chain but it was noisy, this time it stays on much longer. 👍

    • @LeeTanczos
      @LeeTanczos 6 лет назад +1

      Kyro's House it seems we are looking for changing the mix, I have to admit I should be cleaning the chain thoroughly in between “melts”... the 3in1 I have now I think will clean off easily in white spirit / mineral spirits.

    What about using something besides pariffin oil or liquid pariffin? It's anywhere from $12 to $15 per pint here. Walmart sells Florasens lamp oil for about $7 for 64 ounces but it doesn't list any ingredients, only that it contains petrolium hydrocarbons, so I'm not sure what it consists of. A pint of mineral oil is $2 and Kerosene is about $4 per gallon.
    Any thoughts?

      PAG 46 auto ac compressor oil, nearly every parts store has 240mL for about 10$ or even less... tried it on my chain and it gave a very high end ceramic-synthetic lube like feeling in terms of noise and smoothness, also not messy and not smelly (slight rubbery smell that quickly goes away, and nothing else).

    • @jpjdo1212

      you're going to want to go to a vet supply shop of sorts and look for some food grade " liquid paraffin" or " Mineral Oil " some places call it " light liquid paraffin " and " light india ". But its essentially a laxative they give to constipated animals and the kind they use to make make up

    • @oscarmuffin4322

    how you decide what mixture is best for use

    • @KyrosHouseCycling
      @KyrosHouseCycling  5 лет назад +1

      Makan Tahi it’s all in the consistency of the mixture, to hard and it’ll flake off, to soft and it won’t stay on, so somewhere in between, it basically trial and error. Though more pellets to liquid, think I used 1kg wax to 600ml liquid... 👍

    • @makantahi3731
      @makantahi3731 5 лет назад +2

      yes, i did it too, tested from softer mixture to harder, and most important is that surplus of wax on chain fall off from chain, when rotated, not stay on it like butter, i work with inductive heater to warm up the chain on bike and then put wax on it to clean and lube it, all process took about 6-8 minutes per chain/bike

    • @KyrosHouseCycling

    • @KyrosHouseCycling
      @KyrosHouseCycling  4 года назад

      Sonny Bee I’m not sure, I just mixed it until it was soft but not runny. You don’t want it too brittle as it will just fall off, too runny and it won’t stick. It was good for an experiment but I don’t use it anymore, I use molten speedwax. If you watch oz cycle he makes a great wax which is where I got the idea from. 👍

    Seams awfully crumbly and grainy!!! Paraffin (Lamp) oil is not the same as Paraffin oil..... Exact proportions would help. I understand you can cut the wax with Xylene to make it more liquid for occasional aplication like with regular chain oils....Xylene evaporates leaving only micro Paraffin. Thanks Danny
