    The key to successful highway driving is managing space.
    Maintain a minimum following distance of 3 seconds in a passenger vehicle, and more if you're driving a larger vehicle.
    And an important component of space management is driving in the spaces between the clusters of vehicles.
    Learn about mile markers and know where you're exit is and the exact exit number when driving on freeways.
    Good luck on your road test.

    I think defensive driving is when a driver is more cautious, careful, and always considering all possible risks when on the road. Rather safe than sorry. I think it also is expecting the unexpected, but the unexpected must also be expected. I think it is better to prepare for WHEN something happens rather then wondering if it will happen. Defensive driving, I feel, is also about being considerate of ALL road users; cars, bikes, pedestrians, animals, or anything else. Also, I think defensive driver is listening to my own intuition and discretion, rather than other road users who, for example, want me to driver past the speed limit, to cheat traffic, or jump the red light.
    I am a very defensive driver and it helps me a lot. I would rather do that than just wing it. I even go as far as research more on an area I will be driving on to see what many bad circumstances are common on roads there. Some people like the "no risk no fun" mindset. I hate that. Driving not suppose to be fun in the expense of safety. There are places for revolting driving, and it is NOT on public roads.
    Thank you for this video! ❤

      Hello, @@masterrhino9106. Sorry for the late reply. Here is my ongoing playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLCYRay3fWAKeR0LP71378dNTgtnUHmqn1
      This playlist will grow more and more as I find more safety videos on RUclips. Comprehensive videos with actual safe driving tips are hard for me to find because most videos about driving on RUclips are very misleading.

      Hi Lightning Farron - Thank you for your well thought comment. I like you thinking about tuition. I have this idea that driving is a social activity, and even though people are inside their cars, there is an energy that allow you to tune into what other drivers are doing. This energy allows you to be more proactive on the road. I'm going to have a look at your playlist in preparation for my research on defensive driving. All the best, Cheers Rick

    • @ClaireYunFarronXIII
      @ClaireYunFarronXIII 4 года назад

      @@smartdrivetest Thank you for the reply! You know, I agree with your idea. I believe driving is a social activity too, as you interact with people. Driving is such a social thing. We share an area, in this case a road, and just we communicate with one another using our indicators, hands, headlights and brake lights rather than our voices. Like how our brain controls and uses the body to communicate, our body controls and uses the vehicle to communicate.
      Thank you so much for considering my playlist on defensive driving. I hope it helps. Even though the videos don't DIRECTLY talk about defensive driving, there are a lot of advice given that I apply to my idea of defensive driving. The videos fit under the umbrella term "Defensive Driving."
      I am thinking about uploading POV drive videos, maybe with commentary, just to show how I drive in a suburb and in a city, maybe in different weather conditions both during the day and at night. If I do, I will add the videos to the playlist.
      All the best to you too, Rick! ❤

    I was driving on a straight highway. I had the right of way and someone was in the turning median, getting ready to make a left hand turn. If I had been going any faster than the speed of 40, not been paying attention, and had not laid down on my horn, she would have T-boned me and I would have lost my new Buick Encore.

    Hello.
    I'm a new driver, sometimes whenever I'm backing up I forget to shift my gear to D after going on reverse so when I hit my gas pedal for going forward I go backwards instead. Yesterday I made the same mistake and I was barely about to run over a pedestrian jaywalking behind my car cuz he thought I'll drive forward so I slammed on my brake. How can I avoid this silly and terrible mistake?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  4 года назад +1

      Hi M7MD - Thank you for your question. "D" for drive; not "R" for race. ;o) When you back up and stop...take a breath. Think what you have to do, and simple pull the gear selector down 2 slots. It will stop at park without pushing in the button. Remember, any time you change direction in a vehicle, pause, breath, think and do what you need to do to safely change the direction of the vehicle safely and smartly. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    36:40 To add on SUVs being safe. Yes, today they are VERY, VERY safe. Engineers has essentially found ways to counter g-force and body road for SUVs. For example: take a look at the 2020 Mercedes GLE and GLS with the advanced technology and weight distribution and more, and look at even Volvo with their safety tech. I watched a lot of safety videos and read up on their safety scores. Safety regulation are so tight (at least where I live), so older SUVs would not have passed at all, but today's SUVs do very well. Even last year or the year before, the Mercedes GLE and GLC and Tesla Model X were ranked safest vehicles here. But, really, most cars and SUVs are safe, at least where I live, than they were years ago. Our regulations are very TIGHT, and if the car does not pass to our standards then it does not come here.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  4 года назад +2

      Hi Lightning Farron - Thank you for your comment. You are correct my friend. Safety and stability technology as advanced a lot since it beginning days. And as you stated, Volvo has built its company on automotive safety. Where in the world do you live? You're right - most cars are safe in most collisions. Engineers are still working on the "T" bone crash; that one still defies simply physics. All the best, Cheers Rick
