  • Lockleys Pylon Walking Track in the Blue Mountains is a 7.1km return hike that offers stunning 360-degree views of the golden sandstone cliffs of Mount Hay and Mount Banks, along with the serene Grose Valley eucalypt forests.
Named in honour of J.G. Lockley, a passionate journalist who championed the preservation of the Blue Gum Forest from logging in the 1930s, this trail is not just about the views. It’s a tribute to conservation efforts that have shaped this beautiful landscape.
Reaching the summit of Lockleys Pylon, you’re rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views of the Grose Valley, flanked by the majestic sandstone cliffs of Mount Hay and Mount Banks.
For those looking to extend their adventure, there is an optional side trail to Du Faur Head. This additional 1-2 km hike takes you through Shortridge Pass, offering even more spectacular views and a closer look at the Blue Gum Forest. Be prepared for a steep climb back, but rest assured, the effort is well worth it.
The best times to visit the Lockleys Pylon track are during the cooler months or early morning and late afternoon in summer, avoiding the midday heat. The trail is mostly exposed, so hikers should come prepared with plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat, and sturdy hiking boots.
Getting to the trailhead involves driving more than 7km on Mount Hay Road, which is unsealed and can be rough, but manageable for most 2WD cars with careful driving. The car park at the trailhead usually has enough space.
In summary, the Lockleys Pylon Walking Track offers an unforgettable hiking experience with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere.
