- In an Italian-American fever dream, Bradley Dean portrayed a Godfather archetype advising his son’s suitor, played by Nicholas Park, to “Be Italian” in the signature song from Nine. Joined by a gaggle of gregarious gangsters, the full-out production number had the cast dancing sensually and sensationally amid red-checkered tablecloths strewn with glasses of merlot. The number also featured Todd Buonopane, Joe Chisholm and Janelle Farias Sando.
Broadway Backwards was directed, written and choreographed by Robert Bartley, Backwards' creator.
A brilliant string of 11-o’clock numbers, standing ovations and LGBTQ+ joy reverberated through the historic walls at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre on March 11, 2024, when Tony Award winners, Broadway legends and newcomers alike spectacularly shared LGBTQ+ stories through show tunes at Broadway Backwards.
The show raised a record $917,651 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center) in New York City. The one-night-only, annual event is produced by Broadway Cares.
The elevated evening of love, community and unparalleled performances is the only annual Broadway event custom-made for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. By taking familiar songs in the Broadway canon and transforming them into queer anthems, lighthearted romps and emotional ballads, Broadway Backwards tells stories that deserve to be told onstage.

It's the Gay Mafia the right wing warned us about! Love this take, it's brilliant. I hope I can attend this event in person someday!
the gay mafia movie (friends and family) was pretty good
They looked like they had a lot of fun doing this. A nice twist.
I didn't know Bradley Dean before but damn, this man is great
As the president of the Unofficial Bradley Dean Fan Club, I'd like to welcome all our new members who just watched this performance and fell in love. Love seeing people react so positively to this incredible performance of his!
I’m a new member! Holy smokes. The power of that voice and the passion. Where have I been all his life, lol?
@@adamyourke That was me when I saw him in Bat Out of Hell in 2019. "Holy shit how did I not know about this guy until now?!" And now I run the Unofficial fan club! 😂
Oh my gosh! I laughed I cried… if I could’ve seen that when I was coming out in 1983, I could’ve saved myself a lot of heartache and tears. Thank you so much. That was fabulous!
How totally fun! Love this show, which despite the Rob Marshall film, remains very much underrated. And this is its best song. Inspired casting of Bradley Dean. Couldn't imagine anyone more perfect for that role. Wonder how Fellini would have reacted to this delightfully unique evolution of his Saraghina character. But then to my knowledge, he never reacted to Sweet Charity either on stage or film. In all events, thanks for posting this delicious and marvelously staged take on the material.
The red fabric that makes you gay was such a fun an interesting choice.
That horn section is killing it
GAY MAFIA!! I'm here for it
Finally!!! Bravo boys!
That was a kiss.🤣❤ Fantastic performance.
An interesting and wonderful take on this big production number from "Nine."
Musical comedy gangsters - the funniest people ever.
I LOVE IT … AHHHHHH ❤️
Woah! Another one!
Absolutely loved it!!
Delightful ❤
I think I still prefer the Twisted Broadway genderbent version of this but hey, I’m not complaining! Looks like everyone had fun
This is MARVELOUS!
i have no idea what this is from but it looks so fun i might just have to find out 😂
This was sweet. DA
Brilliant.
Less than 0.0025% of 26 million Italian Americans have ties to organized crime. My ancestry is 100% Italian. My family emigrated from Italy 120 years ago, and I come from a line of lawyers and physicians dating back 400 years. Given that Broadway Backwards (which I typically enjoy) is all about advancing tolerance and acceptance and subverting long held, damaging stereotypes, it is especially disheartening to see one of the very few positive portrayals of Italians in popular culture reconceived by promoting the pervasive and blatantly offensive depiction of Italian-Americans as gangsters and buffoons. My kindest criticism is that it lacks imagination. I suspect there aren’t many other demographics in this day and age that its creators would treat in such cavalier fashion.
lmao. you poor thing. i think you were so concerned about being offended that you missed the entire point of this number. but I digress, I'll let ya get back to finding the next traumatic thing to be offended by for no reason. good day.
American being american once again
Offensive in so many ways. I stand by the OG cast I saw in 1982
If you find this offensive, you probably know nothing about Broadway Backwards/Equity Fights Aids and you're most likely homophombic as well. Sad for you
is being old and cranky as fun as they make it sound?
@@lamarlatrell5045 it’s a blast. I hope you make it
@@whitneyryangarrity5265 looks like YOU have made it several times over.
ah, so the performance was perfect then
Offensive in so many ways. I stand by the OG cast I saw in 1982
cry about it you big baby
