    Washer repair kit [amzn.to/2W85VpH]
    Teflon tape [amzn.to/2Sg45SJ]
Steps for fixing a leaky hose spigot:
    1. Richard explains that in most circumstances, a leaky hose spigot will leak from one of two places: the bonnet, or the spout.
    2. If the leak is at the bonnet:
    a. Start by tightening the bonnet with a wrench.
    b. If that doesn’t work, shut the water off and fully remove the shutoff and the bonnet. Check the washer underneath the bonnet. If it is worn, replace it. There are washer replacement kits that can be bought at the home center, or even packing the threaded connection tightly with Teflon tape can do the trick.
    3. If the leak is at the spout, the process is a little more involved:
    a. Turn the water off and remove the stem unit.
    b. Loosen the screw at the bottom of the stem unit with the screwdriver. It’s going to be hard to loosen, so it’s important to use the right size screwdriver and enough force to prevent it from stripping.
    c. Replace the washer of the stem unit and put the screw back in place.
    d. Take the reseating tool and push it through the opening of the stem unit. Twist it around to smooth out the seat that the stem unit rests on.
    e. Reinstall the stem unit and turn the water back on.

The spare washer kit, teflon tape, and spigot repair tools can all be found at home centers and plumbing supply houses.

Thank you for this video. I really appreciate how you show the audience the cutaway and how everything works. That little bit of education can answer so many questions without having to go to RUclips or calling a plumber!
Again thank you so much for all the hard work and detail that you put into all your videos.

Seriously, the cutaway helped more than the several other videos I watched for my issue. My spigot is older than many of those shown commonly, so seeing the cutaway helped me know how to remove the valve stem and get a fix going. Thank you so much!

Great presentation as always, but a couple points:
    1) The handle doesn't have to be all the up for the bonnet to leak. Tightening the bonnet too much, however, will make the handle difficult or impossible to turn.
    2) When he, "Turn off the water," he means at the meter or somewhere other than the spigot. Otherwise, there will be water spewing relentlessly.

Just fixed a decades old hose bib leaking through the handle. The washer looked servicable so I didn't replace it. The bonnet packing was completely gone. I used about 2.5 ft of teflon tape twisted into a rope wrapped around the stem per this video and it works fine. I did tighten the bonnet nut pretty tightly upon reinstall. No leaks! At the very least this should buy me some time until I can get a new bonnet packing and washer. Thanks guys!

@@sjn7220 I don't believe you're supposed to open outdoor faucets and similar valves, like the shutoff valves under the sink, partially anyways. It can make them noisy among other things. The flow control is usually the job of the nozzle at the other end of the hose.
      Edit: Or a sink faucet.

    • @sjn7220
      @sjn7220 4 года назад

@@TwistedD85 I think outdoor faucets are similar to needle valves which are designed to be partially opened to limit flow rate. It's true they can be noisy if not fully open on toilets and faucets but I've never had that problem with an outdoor hose valve (nor would I probably care anyway if I'm outside). It's nice sometimes to limit the flow rate without a nozzle when you're watering plants or washing a car.

Their salesperson didn't know what size flat washer to get, so I checked a new spicot for size. i found the new spicots don't have the screw and washer setup, but use a soft gasket that you slip over a metal flange. I say just buy a new spigot, unscrew the old one, pop the new one in and be done with it. They are cheap enough now-a-days. Loved the video though!

Why not buy 2 new identical valves . Fit one then keep one as a spare then when you have a problem shut the water off change the spindle with the new washers on then repair the original at your leasure

0:50 this video saved me from rebuilding/replacing a leaking spigot with one wrench turn.

Why those rubber washers are held on with brass screws and not stainless I’ll never know. Where I live I have well water that weakens brass and causes the tip of the old brass screw to break off.
