Seriously, the cutaway helped more than the several other videos I watched for my issue. My spigot is older than many of those shown commonly, so seeing the cutaway helped me know how to remove the valve stem and get a fix going. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video. I really appreciate how you show the audience the cutaway and how everything works. That little bit of education can answer so many questions without having to go to RUclips or calling a plumber! Again thank you so much for all the hard work and detail that you put into all your videos. Sincerely, Older woman without a “fix it” person living in the house.
@@timg2973 tightening worked for my faucet in the back yard but had to buy a new spigot and backflow preventer for the front yard since it was so old .
This was literally a 30 second fix for our outdoor spigot, after watching the video. This is always the first channel I go to when I have questions about home repair.
I've owned my home for 7 years. I have had a leaky spigot that I turn off from a switch when not in use. A pain. After watching this video, I tighten up the spigot and there is no longer a leak! Thank you!
lol I usually just buy a new one. If I try and fix it I'll run into an issue like the welded on brass screw or something and end up taking more time to try and save it. Keep the old one and try and rebuild and use as a spare
Woohoo! Just tightened the bonnet on mine, thank you! The whole thing is so old I thought there was no way it would be that easy, with all the buildup and stuff.
I’ve been searching for a video for a valve stem leak. This is the best video I’ve found. It covered all scenarios coming from a knowledgeable person. Thank you very much.
Things usually don't go right when I fix stuff around the house, but your advice worked! I actually just changed out the entire stem with a new one since both the bonnet packing and the bottom washer were wasted and the nut to take the bonnet out had "welded" onto the handle after more than 20 years. Total cost: $7 at HD. Thanks so much!
Ugh... Once again, your videos make it easy! I've been living with a leaky faucet for years. I thought it was a tough fix. Nope. Tighten down the bonnet nut. Thanks again atoh!
Thank you! I was disappointed when I turned on the water and saw a leak. But your video showed me how to fix the leak in less than five minutes!! Thanks!!
Mine leaks only when turned on and I THINK it must be the bonnet! Excited to try this in the morning and fix that annoying leak I’ve had for YEARS! To think I was almost going to replace the whole thing, what a waste of time and money when the fix is likely so easy. Thanks so much for this video!
Same I’m so glad I decided to google “why is my spigot leaking” instead of “replace hose spigot” first! I’ve been doing my best to catch the leaking water in vessels to use to water my plants but I’m glad I can just stop worrying about it now.
Thank you! We're in an historic heat wave and I have hatchlings in a hanging plant. I want to run a mister for them, but noticed a leaky spigot that I really didn't want leaking for hours on end. I thought I'd need to replace the 55-year-old spigot. But after watching your video, I knew what to try. One turn with a wrench and the leak stopped. The baby birds thank you!
Just fixed a decades old hose bib leaking through the handle. The washer looked servicable so I didn't replace it. The bonnet packing was completely gone. I used about 2.5 ft of teflon tape twisted into a rope wrapped around the stem per this video and it works fine. I did tighten the bonnet nut pretty tightly upon reinstall. No leaks! At the very least this should buy me some time until I can get a new bonnet packing and washer. Thanks guys!
Thanks so much for this video! I’ve been telling my husband whom is no handy man for 2 years. That this faucet is running up my water bill. So I took it upon myself to google the problem. And I follow your video very carefully and wahhhlaaa I fixed it myself thanks so very much again. 😅😊
Great presentation as always, but a couple points: 1) The handle doesn't have to be all the up for the bonnet to leak. Tightening the bonnet too much, however, will make the handle difficult or impossible to turn. 2) When he, "Turn off the water," he means at the meter or somewhere other than the spigot. Otherwise, there will be water spewing relentlessly.
Both our hose bibs are leaking. I'm so glad I ran across this while searching on how to fix it. I hope just tightening that bonnet will do the job tomorrow when I give it a try.
Great teaching lesson here. As always from my best friends at TOH. Simple, straight forward. Exactly what I needed to help me solve my leak. And best part was that I found a perfect replacement gasket in my bin of parts. No trip to the hardware store for this project. KA!
Great video. I replaced the hoses to my washing machine and had a small leak at an old shut off. Pulled it off cleaned it out. Teflon taped the bonnet and replaced the washer on the back. No more leak. Like more videos like this please!
@@jdspear did it work for you two? did not work for me, when I twist the handle the teflon tape just sticks to the shaft. Do you do it lose or something?
Outstanding! After watching, I realized I had a little coil of packing "wire" left over from previous owner (my wife's parents). It was the perfect fix for a 60 year old hose bib.
Thank you- fixed a slow drip I had been afraid to tackle before. The cutaway makes it easy to visualize, and your explanations / instructions make it a cakewalk. I never really knew what was inside one of those, now I know. thx 🧑⚕️house dr lol
I know the main should be shut off before doing this but if that’s not an option could I replace the bonnet washer with out shutting off from the main? Thanx for the help anyone
Teflon tape isnt working for me, not sure how it would work.. since it would stay on the shaft and not move up and down when your fauset opens and closes. Have any tips?
It's the packing that needs to be replaced - or the nut tightened a little more. Tighten no more than is necessary to stop the leak. Overtightening makes the valve stiff to operate and wear faster !
@Matthew Savage No it doesn't, you are completely wrong. The thread that opens the valve holds it all together. You can see the thread at 1:22. The gland nut does stop you from opening the valve too far - in which case it would come out under pressure.
If you take it apart, you will have to shut off the water going to it. In theory you should have a shutoff valve in line before the spigot so it can be shutoff during the cold months. If you live in areas where it gets below freezing regularly your outside spigot can freeze and burst so it's wise to have a shutoff before it so that doesn't happen.
I'm 75 years old, and they had back then ( i still have some ) Plumbers impregnated ROPE, that you wrap around the stem, same as your pipe thread suggestion, also i have some rubber rope too, but the Plumbers rope works better, thanks for the Video
I arrived many years ago from the UK. I received an email from the condo board requesting I cut pressure to the ‘spigot’ during the winter. Words like this are rarely used on both sides
@@sjn7220 I don't believe you're supposed to open outdoor faucets and similar valves, like the shutoff valves under the sink, partially anyways. It can make them noisy among other things. The flow control is usually the job of the nozzle at the other end of the hose. Edit: Or a sink faucet.
@@TwistedD85 I think outdoor faucets are similar to needle valves which are designed to be partially opened to limit flow rate. It's true they can be noisy if not fully open on toilets and faucets but I've never had that problem with an outdoor hose valve (nor would I probably care anyway if I'm outside). It's nice sometimes to limit the flow rate without a nozzle when you're watering plants or washing a car.
3:31 shows Richard using a phillips screwdriver to loosen a screw. Bad idea to hold the spigot this way. If the screw driver slips off the screw, he'll badly puncture his hand. Better to hold the spigot in a manner that won't injure his hand!!!
